Rhodes Scholar Reporting the News Show Discussion
NextIteration replied to maraleia's topic in The Rachel Maddow Show
The good news is that Obama signed an emergency declaration for Flint today. ...among a whole lot of other good news, I don't remember does Rachel geek out about international relations as she does politics? Today was a geek out day for history. -

I feel the need to swim into the shallow end on this big Obama-Kerry legacy making day of diplomacy - my love for Richard Engel might have to take a small backseat to my new found crush Ali Arouzi, the man is yummy. -
Girl is all about the weave, she mentions it all the time. Smallvoice... I sort of liked her holiday multi-colored weave.

I totally think it did, he may as well have used the word boy, or another much worse slur. He uses it all the time - also Christie's remarks about tossing Obama out of the White House had major racial undertones. It's dog whistling at it's finest.

I sort of sensed some rhyme and reason to Sunni's previous appearances - that something with a legal aspect had occurred that would be presented in Hot Topics, but sadly that seems to have disappeared now. I don't understand why we need three religious people giving us their "view". le sigh

I've been thinking this from her first couple appearances on Dance Moms. I expected the caricature that we got on AUDC, but she is so much more genuine seeming on DM. Maybe it's just another act, but it doesn't seem like it. She's just so much more sensible and less smack talk. And JoJo is so damn earnest most times anymore, no real smack talk like on AUDC either.

I'm curious why competence and a strong presentation of her policies and stances on issues is referred to as inevitability? I know the press has been calling it a coronation as the linked accounting represents, but I don't know when she's claimed her inevitability. I understand much better other arguments against her, like her actual policy positions and stand on issues, I don't let the media frame my opinion of anything. I much prefer Bernie's vision, but I can agree that he is an idealist. Speaking of the media. later in the day on MSNBC, on With All Due Respect, not surprisingly Halperin criticized Clinton's response to Mika as "rambling" and not concise, showing no "theory of the case" whatever the hell that means.

That Kirstie Alley and Marie Osmond both lost lots of weight on DWTS (most of the "stars" do with that schedule) was evident. I question NutriSystem or whomever they were shilling for at the time, thinking that it's sensible marketing. None of us who might think about using the products/diets will have an enforced activity like DWTS on our calendar. That said, a million years ago I did NutriSystem (back when there were rumors that it gave you kidney stones etc) and lost 40 pounds in five months. Kept it off a few years that time too, lol. At least that time I had pregnancies to blame! Vent all you like Jaded, that's what this place is here for!

She was very good. She was asked to answer for what Mika is always calling her lack of vision and she went on a wonky run of any and every subject/policy she supports. She was challenged about the "healthcare attack" on Bernie and explained, I think very well, that now is the time to draw distinctions and that she doesn't think now is the time to drag the country through another fight to completely revamp the ACA to attempt Bernie's single payer plan. She also smartly made allusions to the fact that there aren't a lot of fleshed out policies for Bernie's vision.

I'm a little shocked and pleasantly surprised that they allowed Hillary to basically filibuster them with her complete vision. I think that is where she shines against Sanders, - he becomes overly focused on the Banks, Wall Street and income inequality to the detriment of a much broader vision. They owed Hillary that much though after the months of bashing.

HAWRIBLY. Is that a word? Sure Joe, use Tavis Smiley against Obama and for Trump. Can someone help me get my eyes back in their sockets? I think they've permanently rolled to the back of my head. People have been living paycheck to paycheck since the first recession under Bush Jr, the master of shitty job creation.

Why in all that is holy, is Matthews having ex-congresscritter Bachmann on his show? This makes angels cry. -
Yes. I have all sorts of feels "some kind of way" about any of Scientology's adherents in Hollywood and have decided to boycott their work for years. Maybe The Academy, feels the same way. Shame, it sounds like the Concussion performance is a good one, but I won't be seeing it. I was ecstatic when WIllow didn't take the role in Annie, I'd watch any version of that because I love it so, and that was a very good one. eta: I caught Paula and Sara(h)? over the weekend doing a feature on GMA about the lottery, Sara was at a bodega getting tickets and grabbed a bunch of Ben and Jerry's - it was cute. I get the feeling that the inclusion of them both on The Spew is preparation for a GMA third hour when they finally shutter The Spew.

No, no, no. Katrina vanden Heuvel, managing editor of The Nation Magazine was on and announced that for only the third time in the magazine's history, they have endorsed a candidate in the primary.

I am soooo pissed that in my arrogance I tossed out my 12/14/16P collection :P. I could use some of that now! I went from like a 24 down to a 4P, and tossed and donated everything over a size 8.

I need to try these coloring books. I hope your son is okay/better @athousanclowns. <3 I came over here in response to the weight loss topic. I lost about 120 pounds and have gained over 40 of it back over the last three years after keeping it all off for a couple years. I think it's twofold, medication related and losing portion control and my retrained palette. I think those two things are so important to retraining your brain about food. I tried a Fitbit which worked sort of, but I have been developing arthritis in my hips where they meet my spine - so walking real distances is becoming too painful (the weight also exacerbates this of course). I bought myself a membership to a place with a pool for Christmas - now it's just a matter of getting off my ass and going when it's so cold and my skin is already dry from the forced heat and sub-zero temps. It was so easy for me to lose it before, I was so single minded about it and did it in such a bad way (under 800 calories most days for about 18 months) - I just can't find that resolve this time, and it's probably more sensible that I don't. It's a struggle, for certain.

It is. I'm taking this to the Small Talk thread.

Does anyone else have Xfinity/Comcast? My DVR served up two copies of last week's episode and none of this week's, did anyone else have that happen? eta: watched online. The busted weaves, the fake nails (that look fake) and the excessive makeup - the only ones that look normal anymore are Jess (for Jess) and Holly. The drama is old and tired. The dances - solos. Nia's solo had zero content for a teen jazz and from what I could tell (I thought I could see where it went in the choreo), the 3 seconds of twerk might have actually helped it, this is Cookie we are talking about. The costume didn't fit the dance or character at all either, the point differential could have reflected both the lack of difficulty in the choreography and the lame choreography itself. Kendall was given a gift with that choreography and professional make up job and what did she do? She whined and cried about it. Abby was right and it was a great idea to give her that make up job, because an upset Kendall might have performed more of what the piece needed. Instead? She went out there and gave no face at all, just the pretty smile. Mackenzie, once again the stupid cartwheels in a circle and pigtails. She didn't stand a chance as a Junior with that choreography but came within tenths of a point of Kendall. Group dance - they did not give the proper face for that dance at all, and they needed eyeliner in their makeup. Their eyes just disappeared which exacerbated the problem, you can't give face to the judges without eyes. They come in second, makes me curious what the point deduction was for the slip (which could have been for the slip itself, and for the costuming that caused it). I'm looking forward to seeing some Minis!

He did refer to it as a hostage crisis. Now, I find it really fishy what happened, but the Revolutionary Guard reports to the Ayatollah, so they are always more brutal and radical, so I'm never surprised by their strong-arm tactics. That said, the sailors were held overnight as opposed to a couple weeks with the incident with the British sailors almost a decade ago. It would kill Joe (and any GOPer) to admit, that all of the negotiations for the Nuclear Arms Deal have opened up diplomatic channels to quickly resolve these things. He was up in arms about the sailors being shown kneeling with their hands behind their heads and the apology that has no context being shown on Iranian State television - which in spirit is a violation of the Geneva Convention. I really hope that Clinton does not call in to the show tomorrow, it smells desperate. And I am shocked, SHOCKED that The Nation endorsed Sanders (NOT!).

Oprah did the much more radical and medically supervised Optifast, that's the diet after which she dragged the wagon of fat on stage.
-
I should comment that though I don't often agree with Paula, I like the way she is coolly and calmly "winning" every day, and making Whoopi look like the bully that she is. I appreciate that she's not as sneaky as Wallace was last season.

Joe's positive remark was that Obama's best SOTU was the one immediately after Newton/Sandy Hook. They did talk about Haley's veiled condemnation of Trump and Cruz, but not in a negative way. They addressed Coulter's response to "deport Haley" and something about Ingraham's tweet that wasn't quite as radical.
-
Sometimes it's not just the emotional eating, weight (fat) can serve as a shield for those that feel vulnerable.
-
I'm not paying attention to "blocks" but I think the third block was entirely dedicated to the SOTU and the Republican response by Nikki Haley. Lots of criticism for Obama and the SOTU speech, massive praise for Haley and the response. About as you'd expect. Ryan had zero poker face last night, I hate it when I agree with Mika. eta: didja see what they just did there regarding Iran and the unnerving firing of rockets at our aircraft carrier (which was outrageous), it's widely reported that it was 1500 yards, Joe says "1000 yards" and Cotton follows on with "a few hundred yards", Republicans just can't help themselves, they establish talking points and lie their arses off.

Her hair was way better on Tuesday, I agree! I think that CCD is now called "Formation", I'm really old. ;)
