  1. Did anyone see the Halloween-themed movie You Cast a Spell on Me that aired on ION tv on Sunday? I just managed to DVR a repeat of it after my mom noticed it while flipping through channels and texted me that it seemed like something I normally watch.
  2. This is not the original article I referred to but another article now discussing the media's equal treatment of unequalsides. http://www.salon.com/2015/10/24/lets_call_them_all_lunatics_fearful_balanced_journalists_let_wingnuts_run_wild/ Disclaimer: I have not yet read the whole thing. My phone notification gave me that story, and I started to read it at the store but have not yet finished.
  3. My DVR is in big trouble. So many of the movies sound/look good, although I will eventually delete some that end up not living to their potential onscreen. Still, I better start doing what some of you have been doing and buy some of the DVDs. I have so much still saved on my DVR that I barely have room for my weekly shows now and have to keep up with deleting. I better delete more stuff somehow. :-(
  4. All these videos from SCD are making me want to go back and rewatch routines with Pasha, another SYTYCD favorite who is now a pro on SCD. I wish we had gotten him on DWTS.
  5. Your comment is interesting. I actually had read an article recently that criticized mainstream media for focusing too much on "being balanced" versus reporting accurate information that could have shed a negative light on one side. It went on to indicate the negative consequences of the falsely balanced storylines regarding what the public hears and what we do/do not hold politicians and the government accountable for.
  6. Because she doesn't actually know ballroom, like Allison doesn't. She seems to think ballroom=sex/striptease
  7. No. She was saying how it must have been hard to translate what was originally a tap routine into the jazz.
  8. Designers on this show haven't understood the Avante Garde challenge after Chris March's season. I remember his stuff and the other designers (can't remember specifically now) truly having out there looks. But I really didn't hate any of these looks, so I agreed it was a good runway despite the inconsistent match to the challenge.
  9. I completely agree that Tamar should not be receiving similar scores as Paula. However, the show has ALWAYS seemed to score contestants compared to their own previous performances and not really compared to other performers. I've seen many examples of poor dancers receiving similar scores to better dancers. With them starting all of the scores pretty high in the beginning (even the low ones), they didn't leave much room to show growth in scores. So if one strong contestant has an off week, their scores tend to bump with less talented dancers who show any improvement. I don't necessarily agree with this tactic since the overall scores impact the competition unfairly as opposed to calculating some sort of change score to see who improves most. However, it also evens things out since the stars come in at such different skill levels and you know certain contestants are unlikely to magically transform into top contenders. The show just has an identity crisis about whether it is about best dancers or most improvement, plus of course popularity mixed in.
  10. I haven't decided yet how long to give the show. However, my current issue with it is similar to yours. While the writing and segments are good, there's just something lacking or wrong for me in his delivery. I read an article this morning that had an appropriate description of him, but I can't seem to find it now. It was actually a positive review, even if it somehow put into words what I am having trouble with.
  11. I think song choice had an impact on my enjoyment of dances this episode. There were probably others, but two that stuck out to me were Andy's and Nick's songs - they were not good matches for Argentine Tango and Pasadoble. Andy definitely did better than he has so far, but it was still hard for me to really judge the dancing in both of those when the music was so off.
  12. This is my first season watching the show with the Switch Up - I had stopped watching previously but got sucked back in this year for Nick. I've also watched some seasons of SYTYCD. I almost wonder if it would be interesting to have a season of DWTS similar to what SYTYCD has sometimes done and have the partners switch every week. While it would still be a popularity contest on the celeb side, maybe we'd get a better focus on quality of dance and less impact from supposed favoritism of certain professionals and/or unequal teaching skills of professionals. Though the pros probably wouldn't go for losing the chance to win the mirrorball themselves and not sure how you'd decide which of them stick around with the narrowed down celebs. So I guess it doesn't work logistically. But some interesting possibilities.
  13. I have no idea and definitely don't know as much behind-the-scenes stuff as many others here to understand any of the logistics with this stuff. But I could see pros and cons either way. If it clears and you have not done anything, then you have a short time to learn the dance. But if you risk it and go the other route like Bindi and Derek, you might end up having to learn two dances (which didn't work so well for anyone last week).
  14. Interesting. According to Sharna's blogpost on Hollywood Life, the Downton song wasn't approved until late Thursday night. So she and Nick lost two days of rehearsal, starting on Friday. Yet that wasn't played up for drama or sympathy like others.... Good for them just dealing with what they were given without complaint. http://hollywoodlife.com/2015/09/29/dwts-sharna-burgess-downton-abbey-nick-carter-blog-dancing-with-the-stars/
  15. I don't know how to do the cool linking within text, but interesting negative take from Salon on the impact/non-impact of Trevor Noah's version of the show: http://www.salon.com/2015/09/28/trevor_noah_gives_fox_news_a_free_pass_the_new_daily_show_could_be_great_for_ailes_and_hannity_bad_for_america/
  16. Sorry to be off topic, but this reminds me. When the news came out recently that JK Rowling indicated we have been pronouncing Voldemort wrong, I thought of Colbert's pronunciation of his name, report, etc. as a coincidentally helpful demonstration of how it's supposed to be pronounced.
  17. I haven't watched yet, but the diverse opinions on how Colbert handled Cruz and Trump here seemed to be matched in the media. I'm seeing articles saying he was soft on both, that he was harder on Cruz, or the one posted here saying that he was actually hard on Trump (possibly more). Trump apparently left the show having a good opinion of Colbert. All very interesting...
  18. Since it seems some fans of Craig Ferguson hang out in here at times, here is some good news: http://deadline.com/2015/09/craig-ferguson-join-or-die-history-series-1201531899/ To get more on topic - wow, an almost 11 minute video package on the LLS? That really is pretty crazy. What is he doing on "live" part of the show for all of that time while viewers/audience are watching? Admittedly, I have not really watched his version of the show.
  19. Not sure if anyone will see this at point, but Craig has a new project officially announced. It sounds pretty great, actually! http://deadline.com/2015/09/craig-ferguson-join-or-die-history-series-1201531899/
  20. Sharna and Nick will also be writing a weekly blog at Hollywood Life. First one by Sharna here, called: "‘DWTS’: Sharna Burgess So Proud Of Nick Carter — ‘He’s Going To Blow People Away’" http://hollywoodlife.com/2015/09/15/dwts-premiere-sharna-burgess-nick-carter-week-1-dancing-with-the-stars/
  21. Stephen King was interviewed by Ferguson, and that was a terrific interview as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9yGZDnW7F7U I love Colbert, but I still see Ferguson as just such a great combination of natural conversation and intelligence in his interviews. Hopefully as Colbert gets more time and more comfort, he will be more natural, even if he sticks to having notes.
