  1. He mentioned it briefly on the Monday show, I believe. No opinion. He just did his usual thing of accusing Michael of being a racist and said that if the Scottish voted yes and became independent, they'd go after Michael.
  2. Actually, I'm pretty sure only that one family wanted to home school their kids, not Joanna and Chip. There was one episode where one of the daughters showed Joanna that she got a good grade on her spelling test. And when the boys were helping clean up the trees, I think there was a reference or hint that made me think they were off from school for winter break (or some sort of break, but they seemed like it was cold in Texas). Peanutbuttercup, I haven't seen couples like you described, but there was an interracial couple, which I think some religious groups have issues with. I don't know anything about the Fundies. I don't like what Joanna has done with their own farm, but I've loved pretty much everything she has done for all of the clients. The French country house looked a little different to me, maybe because that family had a specific style request in mind. My guess is that a lot of decorators have kind of their own style that is obvious across different projects, like artists. We're just used to shows like Property Brothers, where it is actually a different designer each time and they just pretend Jonathan did the designs (according to what I had read at the old TWOP).
  3. They actually have a new song, "Already Home," that is played on the radio near me a little bit. It doesn't seem to have taken off, though, but I love the song. Not sure why they didn't perform that one. I know they have performed it on other shows. Am I the only one who was reminded of Pasha and Lauren's hip hop routine with Serge and Carly tonight? Despite there being 6 ballroom dancers initially, I don't think Nigel is actually pulling for one to be the winner. The focus has been and continues to be on contemporary and its variations and how awesome the contemporary dancers are. So far, I'm not loving this group of dancers as a whole.
  4. This is another big reason why I like this show. I'm so sick of the clients on all of these other shows who expect everything in their house no matter their budget or the cost. And then the show just feeds their selfishness by giving it to them (Property Brothers anyone?). I like that these are seemingly regular people searching for a decent house in their budget, and Chip and Joanna give them what still ends up being a beautiful but reasonable home. We don't see the clients constantly coming back and saying, "Oh, by the way, we MUST have this. And we want this. We don't care the cost. Find a way! We want want want want want."
  5. Kind of ironic that they chose Abe as the main character to be more "interesting," yet so many people are clamoring for more Ben (which they wouldn't have if he was the main character) and fine Abe to be too boring.
  6. The references some of you have made to Pasha and Sara remind me of their season, and I actually still think that season had the most talent overall (despite what Nigel and Co. want us to think). Admittedly, I haven't watched every season since in full, especially the few years where contemporary seemed to completely take over. I guess I should also admit that Pasha is my favorite all time dancer. :-)
  7. I just discovered this show yesterday when this episode aired. I really enjoyed it and hoped to go back and watch previous episodes/seasons. I'm having difficulty finding them available anywhere. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I could watch them? I live in the U.S., btw. Thanks.

  9. I also loved that the guy hated her kitchen. I actually don't love their house, either, lol. But I LOVE all the houses that they have done for other people. So at least she is good at matching people's tastes.
  10. This is a relatively new show on HGTV, so I'm not sure how many people are familiar with it yet. But I love it! Definitely one of the better shows. Low on drama, and the work they do is BEAUTIFUL. I have loved every home so far. There are pictures on their website: http://magnoliahomes.net/fixer-upper/
  11. When I read the article, I took that to only be a small part of their future storylines. It sounded to me like there would also be a lot more spying next season. Stuff with John Andre in Philly, and Abigail with him. Interesting stuff with Simcoe and Robert Rogers as they start to follow Simcoe's actual history. More presence of George Washington and introducing Benedict Arnold. And this: The article actually got me excited.
  12. This! I love Ben best, too! This show needs a 2nd season, if only because I recently moved to Virginia and need to take a drive to wherever they have been filming. ;-) Seth is only 2 years younger than me.
  13. I guess this episode isn't going to be completely made up: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Setauket
  14. Apparently the real Simcoe may not have been so much of a good guy either, at least not during the war. On the AMC forums, someone posted the following: It’s hard to discuss Simcoe’s activities in the Revolutionary War without the context of the Queen’s Rangers. Let’s begin by saying the "Queens Rangers" depicted in TURN is not QYR established in Canada at a later date;. That said, the QYR, like the American Army “Rangers” and the “Queen’s Rangers” of the Rev War all trace their lineage to the original Queens Rangers of the French and Indian war. The “Queen’s Rangers” of the American Revolution was an American Loyalist regiment created by British General Howe specifically for Robert Rogers to lead. The unit was intended as a reprise of the Queens Ranger's unit which Rogers led during the French and Indian War (AKA “the 7 Years War”). Roger's Rangers were known as a tough "no-holds barred" frontier unit. Depending on your side in that war they were either cunning or ruthless; bold or vicious. Robert Rogers, notable frontiersman who led the original Queens Rangers during the French and Indian War, was both a hero and villain to both sides in both wars. After the F&I war Rogers launched several failed ventures, squandered his investors fortunes, was thrown into debtors prison in England, became an alcoholic, and got out of debtors prison after the revolution started. He arrived in 1776 British-occupied New York where he first tried to sell himself to the British Army, then tried to get a better deal from the Americans, who discovered his mercenary loyalty and briefly jailed him before he escaped and accepted the British deal. Gens Howe and Clinton didn't trust him, so he was only allowed to recruit from the dregs of society – bars, jails, deserters, and prison ships, to form the new Queen's Rangers, who are accurately depicted in the show as a group of shady cut-throats. They were ruthless, barbaric, and allegations of rape, pillage, and plunder against citizens hounded the unit throughout the RevWar. John Graves Simcoe, like Robert Rogers, is a figure whose reputation depends upon which side you learnt your history. Simcoe's start in the British Army was lackluster. He apparently was sufficiently low to attract Robert Rogers' attention for recruitment into the Queen's Rangers notorious office cadre. At one point all 16 of the Queens Rangers Officers were court-martialed. Although not fully exonerated, Simcoe was one of the two officers retained in service. The rest were given various degrees of punishment; 14 were additionally dismissed from the army as "unfit for service to the Crown" - a damning judgment considering the need for officers during time of war. Later in the war Simcoe rose to the rank of Lt Col of the Queen's Rangers and grew to become a competent commander. The Rangers performed well at the battle of Brandywine, capably at Germantown, and consistently under Arnold, Phillips and Cornwallis in the 1781 Virginia campaign. But, Simcoe and the Rangers’ off-battlefield behavior found consistent rebuke and their reputation as cut-throats preceded them. Upon the British approach to Petersburg in April 1781, their commander, Maj Gen William Phillips, felt it necessary to issue an order directing the Rangers to note that the British Army was present in America to promote order and to protect the lives and property of the citizens. Phillips knew that the Crown needed to restore the colonies to the empire by winning hearts and minds; not by burning, raping, and murdering. During that Campaign Simcoe was ordered to keep a journal of his activities, which he did and later edited and published. When read alongside contemporary accounts by other participants in the same actions Simcoe's account appears consistently self-serving. This is the “Mr Hyde” of Simcoe evidenced in the USA. But… After the war Simcoe relocated to Canada, along with many of his fellow Rangers and about 25,000 dispossessed Loyalists: kindred souls willing to dismiss Simcoe's wartime conduct as a necessary evil; many who wanted their own activities forgotten as well. Simcoe became “Dr. Jekyll” - a key leader in the development of Toronto, particularly the road system, and served the Crown ably in his later years. As a result, the Canadian remembrance of Simcoe is justifiably based on the post-war political career he mounted in Canada in which he served his constituents and Canada well.
  15. I have a harder time blaming the show. I read one of the books about the spies (not the one the show is based on), and the real Abraham was pretty much as he is portrayed from what I can see. He was constantly nervous and faltering about his participation. He was always asking for payment for his costs related to his spying. I was surprised he was made the main character of the show. I'm waiting for one of the other main players to be introduced.... I AM annoyed with the family/relationship drama, though. Especially since I'm pretty sure Abraham wasn't even married at the time. Guess the writers think we'll be bored with straight up history.
