Did we get a solid idea of what grade the kids are in? If not, I'd wager they're either sophomores or juniors, making them either 16 or 17. If that's the case, at least we can take solace in the fact that they were born in the 90s. Still doesn't really explain why "Daisy" was dressed like Debbie Gibson at the high school dance, but whatever. Maybe Lakewood is like Canada, and the late 80s didn't arrive until the mid-90s!

A podcaster? Sounds like we're getting this series' version of Gale Weathers! Also, speculation, but I expect the next death to be If that's the case, I could see it causing a rift between Emmy and Audrey.

I liked it. I thought the tone of the episode struck a nice balance between the original movie and Scream 4, which I wasn't sure the writers would be able to do. I found most of the boys unlikeable (especially the new kid at school, who i've taken to calling "Hair" or NARC), but I could see myself becoming invested in most of the girls. As it stands, Emma appears to be what we'd typically think of as the "sole survivor" type, but I wonder if the show will screw with that trope halfway through the season. I could see them killing her off early to really jolt the audience into realizing that anyone is fair game. How very Game of Thrones. Case in point... I always thought that a Slasher Flick would never work as a TV series because no one wants to become invested in characters and then have them die in gruesome ways, but I think shows like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead have proven that that's not actually true anymore. So long as the writers can find a way to keep the body count growing, while also managing to keep enough likable characters alive, I think I'll be happy to watch.

Just as a reminder to folks when talking about issues of race, religion, sexuality, etc., to tread very lightly. This show has a tendency to incite heated discussion about these topics and I want to try to avoid any major forum drama. For example, there have been a number of references to Jason as being too "flamboyant." Often, this is code for "too gay," which is inappropriate and borderline offensive. Please be mindful when choosing your words. Thanks!

Season 17 Live Feed Discussion: Watch People Sleep All Day!

Just FYI, folks, I moved the discussion of the twins to this thread because it wasn't appropriate for the Mod Notes thread. Thanks. -
I thought this was a surprisingly strong start to the season, especially considering I'm usually bored to tears during the premiere episode. I think I like most of the HGs so far (although I expect that to drastically change in the coming weeks once everyone exposes their true colors) and I'm oddly looking forward to the Twin Twist (even though, yes, it is a rehash from S5). That said, James wasn't my first choice for HoH, mostly because I'm rooting for Audrey and Da'vonne at this point, but we'll see how the rest of the week plays out.

Your thread to discuss the S17 live feeds! -
Let's keep discussion in here about mentions of BB in the media! Thanks.

Just as a reminder, folks, the Small Talk thread is intended to catch all off-topic discussion. That means, if you want to talk about your kids, your pets, your mother-in-law, whatever, it goes in here. If you want to take about the show, however, that goes in whichever thread is most appropriate. That will never be this thread, as talk about the show is, by definition, not off-topic. Thanks!

Am I the only person who thought he heard Laura Wright say some variation of "fuck it" just before the start of her scene? There was even a second or two of no audio, which made it seem like someone pushed the censor button just a tad too late.

I think this is right. Whitney is as hot a mess as anyone on the cast, but he somehow thinks he's absolved from his bad behavior because he's privileged. Shep, too, is no angel, except he has money to fall back on. Craig, on the other hand, doesn't have the same kind of cushion (although he acts as if he does) and it appears that folks like Shep and Whitney feel as though they can look down on him for it.

I hadn't realized that Carlos attended law school in between shooting Duke and tying up Sabrina, but he was talking about the evidence and hearsay rules as though he had. Good for him. He's not great at dying quickly and efficiently, though.

That seemed to be the line for Greg as well. He had been rolling with the punches up until that point, although still visibly irritated. As soon as Chantelle pulled out the "massa" joke, which was in pretty poor taste, Greg started calling to have her removed from the event altogether. And, I have to say, I'm starting to feel like making racially-charged comments is becoming a pattern with Chantelle. Between the 'Afghan Hound' quip with Arzo, and now this? It's really rubbing me the wrong way. -
It turns out that that isn't the type of show one can "watch" (have on in the background while doing something else), which I quickly learned tonight. The biggest thing I got out of the episode was being thrilled when Matt Dillon slammed the nurse into the wall. And then there was a lot of, "OMG, what is he doing on this show?!" Like, seeing Terrence Howard in anything but his over the top ensembles on Empire is a weird feeling. Same with Juliette Lewis looking much less frigid than she does on Secrets & Lies. But, uh, yea... that's pretty much all I got.

Never mind the fact that it's self-published. Like, I know someone who wrote a terrible romance novel (featuring-- wait for it-- werewolves) and self-published. And that's not to diminish the success Demetria had with her last book, but this big launch event for this book felt a little self-important. -
The Goldbergs in the Media: That's Incredible!

TVGuide has a cute article about Beverly, written last week: How Beverly Became the World's Best Smother. My favorite story about the real Beverly comes at the very end: apparently, Real!Beverly purchased a bunch of porn on VHS because it was on sale (buy 1, get 3... that is a pretty good deal). I doubt that's a storyline we'll be seeing next season! And AVClub reviewed last night's episode, giving it a perfect 'A.' (As always, scroll down to the second half of the article for The Goldbergs bit.) I concur. -
It really has been, which is why I don't think the writers actually penned this as a possible series finale. There was quite literally no question that the show would be renewed for a third season. But damn, man, this show. It never ceases to kick me right in the feels, and it does it in a way that doesn't feel cheap or schmaltzy or saccharine. I really appreciated that the show went in a different direction with the Murray/Erica story, both of them practically weaponizing "I love you" after Beverly insisted on butting in. The moral at the end, that there can be an unspoken love between parents and children, really rang true for me. My mother has always been like Bev, showering her children with affection, whereas my father is the exact opposite. And yet, my father and I both know there's still love there. I wonder if Dana will return for S3 (and I guess it depends on whether or not the real Dana moved when she and Adam were children). I never thought I would wince at the idea of losing a secondary character on this show, but I've really become attached to the cavalcade of enjoyable family friends and neighbors. That said, I hope next season they flesh out the Goldbergs' extended family a little more. We've met Murray's younger brother, Marvin, but I don't think there's been anyone else.

Except that makes it sound like everyone's behavior was Cameran's fault, which seems a little silly to me considering these are all educated adults. Moreover, and only speaking for myself, I don't think that Shep's this awful person because of how we saw him behave this episode. In fact, I still think he's a perfectly nice guy. But Shep himself has acknowledged that his behavior was out of line. He's entitled to have an off day every once in awhile and lose his cool, and I don't think it's necessary to try to apologize or create excuses for him. Pinning it all on Cameran or Craig seems unfair. Additionally, I can never abide by the "He's rich and privileged and tired of all these people!" argument because, like, I'm about as poor as a church mouse and that's not really a valid excuse for treating someone else in a shitty manner. Combined with the fact that Shep is probably being well compensated for all of his contractual obligations (which include lavish vacations and a seemingly endless bar tab), and I can't muster much sympathy for him or anyone else on the show.

From TVGuide: The Real (Crazy) Stories Behind Season 2. Adam F. Goldberg describes the true stories behind S2's episodes 1, 6, 8, 10, 13, 16, 17, 18, 19, 21, and 24.
