  1. ... and back again... (as CatMack tried to move on... hee) Regarding the "I regret I have but one life to give for my country" (that's pretty close to the quote I learned way back in the 1960s, which wasn't quite the same as what Claire quoted), it really did feel odd. I gotta go with doenstworkonwood here. Besides being a Brit (right?) the American Revolution wasn't a big deal in Britain. Heck, it wasn't even called the American Revolution. When the original Poldark first aired in the U.S., a friend of mine who's much more attuned to this sort of thing, remarked about how different the perception of the war was in England. It certainly wasn't the Big Deal it is here. Now moving on ... ;) ... to what CatMack said: Yeah, I'd go for that!
  2. They're available on iTunes, in the Google play store ( pretty sure), and on Amazon for streaming. You buy individual episodes or the whole (first half) season. If you mean the most recent episodes, they aren't available yet.
  3. Re: Alexander, no, he's book 2. Someone asked Tobias Menzies if he'd play Alexander, too (as a joke, I think). He said he'd love to, but probably wouldn't. I'm currently reading book 3 and have fallen totally in love with Lord John Grey. I'd love to see him played by Jensen Ackles. Jensen isn't short nor British, but he's very, very pretty, and is extremely good with accents.
  4. "No peacocks were harmed during the filming of this episode."
  5. Thanks for the link, WatchrTina! That salon.com in indeed really good, a real eye-opener—in a good way. I've always had trouble with the "I dinna I wasn't going to like it" line, but Sam's explanation made a lot of sense, and put me in Jamie's frame of mind. Interesting that both Sam and Cait said they didn't play the scene for laughs. It gives us a great insight into the acting process and the production. And realizing that what the actors are going for might not play out that way in the final edit.
  6. It's funny you should open this topic. I was actually trying to figure out a good way to open season 2. (Kind of as a writing/creativity excercise. I've only gotten part way through the 2nd chapter. heh.) While it was ok in the book, I don't think it'd translate well to the screen. If it followed exactly, Jamie wouldn't be in at least the first 1 or 2 episodes. So far, the changes Ron Moore & co have made from the books have only made the series better. I guess i should trust him on that. As for aging Jamie & Claire 20 years, remember that both actors are in their mid-30s. I don't think the changes would be too drastic in appearance. For those of you who haven't reached 45 or 50 yet (unlike me), it really isn't that old. (The older I get, the actual age of what's "middle age" and "old age" keeps being moved further and further back. Hee.) I do agree with CatMack: While I'm not sure how I'd like to see season 2 begin, I'd really like to see it end similarly to the book, It would be a great way to keep things positive for non-book readers while still feeling the loss of the separation.
  7. If Jamie had slapped Claire during their heated argument, would it have caused outrage? Because Claire slapped Jamie awfully hard and barely anything has been mentioned about it. Yes, she only hit him once compared to however many spanks he gave her. But my guess is that if Jamie had slapped Claire, it would have been horrible. Would that be considered spousal abuse? I'm not trying to be flippant, I'd really like to know. It just seems like a double standard to me.
  8. I just came from the media thread and EVERYONE is talking about the spanking scene. But there was so much more to the episode. It really fleshed Jamie as a character, as an adult and a leader. Without the spanking, we would not have seen Jamie grow as a husband and a marriage partner. So in that respect, it was kind of needed. (But I admit I've never understood the "I dinna say I wasn't going to enjoy it.") Someone (up-thread, I think) mentioned there wasn't an outcry of "Child abuse!" for the boy who had his ear nailed to the wall. If we were able to put that punishment into the context of historical morés, why can't we do the same with this one? Is it because that punishment was administered by the evil Father Bain and it's done here by our hero?
  9. Geez, there's so much more to this episode than the spanking scene! Too bad no one can focus on anything else.
  10. I came to Outlander late (late Dec) and to the podcasts even later. The latest one features Ron and episode writer Matt Roberts. It was a great insight into the writing process.. I'm now going back to catch the season 1A podcasts. Only got through episode 1 last night. Looks like the next two may be a little frustrating. But I'll force (haha!) myself to sit through them.
  11. WatchrTina, in one of the clips for the rest of the season, there's a shot of Jamie throwing a bag of money (I think) to someone I didn't recognize. After the last episode, it is indeed Horrocks, he of the dreamy eyes and Irish accent. (It's not the same scene of bag throwing we saw in 109. So he does make a reappearance. Maybe more?)
  12. To me, the fact that she wrote a really long post about the situation makes her look defensive. Of course, I expect nothing less than a really long post because Diana seems to be quite verbose. After the Paley event (the first one I've ever sat through live), I thought quite a bit about Diana, her writing, her personality, and her inclusion on these panels. I was (pleasantly) surprised to come in here and see I'm not alone in my thinking. However, as WatchrTina (and her Fraser tartan) mentioned, she did create this beloved universe. The question I'd raise is, does George R.R. Martin participate in the Game of Thrones panels? I believe he does, at least some of them. I don't know how much he contributes (if he's on the panels), but it does set a precedent of sorts.
  13. NO!!! No cliffhangers, please! The second season won't air until 20-fucking-16! That's too damn long to wait for a resolution! Leave us with something to bask in the glow of for God knows how long. Cliffhangers are not good tv! IMO, of course. (Can you tell I'm adamant about this?
  14. *raises hand* I picked up the book after the cliffhanger. (Also, I missed this not so little gem until OnDemand had it in their "Best of 2014" folder.) I'm still reading (slow reader), but did sneak a peek at the final chapters. It's hard to imagine they'll be quite as graphic as the book, but this is pay cable. Incidentally, even though I saw tv version first, I actually have a different picture of book-Jamie and book-Claire in my head. I like tv-Jamie and tv-Claire better. :)
  15. Thanks, Petunia846. That's what I thought. Interesting that it's not in the book. I guess we'll all find out together.
  16. Thank you for this thread! It's exactly what I need! I began reading book 1 after episode 8 (mostly because I couldn't wait). My question is, does the key Jamie had the wedding ring made from have any significance? I have my theories (can't get spoiler tags to work), but I really want to know!
  17. As a new-ish viewer (damn you, Flash crossover and "The Climb"!), I've been watching S1 and S2 in order and came upon this episode today. One thing I've seen consistently is Oliver's poor judgement regarding women. He tends to think with his "downstairs brain" (to quote Supernatural) instead of his "upstairs brain." So for me, it was perfectly in character for Oliver to sleep with Isabel. I do think this is the first time we've had a glimpse of Oliver's attraction to/love for Felicity. The way the line is delivered and his softened expression, it's obvious (to me) he's talking about her. Incidentally, I loved Oliver's line "Her skirts... aren't.. that short." SA has great, if understated, comic timing.
  18. He wasn't on contract for season 3, which is why he was a "guest' and not a regular. I read on one of the boards here that he was working on another pilot, so he may not be available for season 4. He's always been pretty much in demand, and I'm sure his Emmy win has helped.
  19. Oh dear. I was one of the very few (if any) people who actually liked Fitz. That is, until he blamed Mellie for his affair with Olivia. What the fuck? What an ass! Dejana, your assessment of Fitz is great, and spot-on. He reads much more Democrat than Republican. I also think they originally meant for him to be progressive, fair, and honest. (Not saying that Dems are progressive, fair and honest. Sadly, no politician is.) But he has become a sad little sack with apparently no power or thoughts of his own. Hey, Anna Yollei! I'm a former Navy officer. We're not all like that, I swear! :-D Some of us aren't even photogenic! But, thinking one is "entitled" being daughter of a retired Commander is pretty lame. Commander isn't all that high in the ranks. Several of my friends retired as Navy Captains, one could probably have made Admiral if she'd stayed, and none of us were entitled. :-) (Again with the smiley face because I don't want you to think I'm insulted. I'm not! Just found yours a fun post to respond to.) Oh, and even I worked for some crappy officers. But they were the exception rather than the rule.
  20. This show used to be so good. Now it's just gotten nutso. I got into Scandal during early season 2, and went back to watch some season 1 episodes (altho i missed the Amanda Tanner stuff). When the election fraud thing came out, I was so shocked, i got chills. It was that compelling! But, when Fitz killed Verna Thornton, i stopped watching. How preposterous! (Granted [no pun intended!], she did try to assassinate him.) Of course, in comparison to what's transpired since then, a sitting President murdering a Supreme Court Justice seems tame. But I love me some Joe Morton, so have been on binge-watching the last few days. Man, the show really went downhill the second half of this season. Now it's all B613 with its torture and murders. It makes me wonder what goes on the writers' room. The show really needs some fresh ideas and interesting characters.
  21. Ugh, this show! I've gotten to the point of only watching snippets and fast-forwarding to the runway show. (I usually go back and watch the entire episode, but last night I just deleted the damn thing after the mini-watch.) Last week I said i didn't mind Kini being the runner-up, since i think that's where he's belonged (if not lower for his uninspired red carpet dress), but I really enjoyed his design. i\It had great proportions and a little unexpectedness. But why couldn't it have been a happy color? it had to be black to go with Sean's pants? This relying on the same color scheme for both dresses is crazy. Wouldn't/Couldn't the "same girl" like and wear different colors? Or maybe something with print? Of course, that's a risk, because print can be good or bad. I guess much like the lace Alexander and Samantha used. While at Mood, I was excited about the oxblood lace. But for God's sake, why couldn't thy have lined it? Or used it as an accent? Adding applicques and feathers to the naked lace was acky-tacky. While I like(d) Char (didn't see in the mean girl edit in my quickie watch), I haven't been wowed by her designs, other than the initial challenge. She definitely had the worst dress last night, both design-wise and execution. Not winning a challenge yet isn't a bad thing. I didn't watch the first season, but Dmitri didn't win any challenges until late in the game.
  22. Not me. At last he's been in the top. Poor Fade can't catch a break. I figured out a couple seasons back that the multitude of one-day challenges are a cost-saving device. And it seemed to occur when the show moved to Lifetime. C'mon, Lifetime and Bunim/Murray, the franchise has been around several years and even more seasons. Between that, the copious product placements and the not-terribly-subtle sponsor-endorsed challenges, surely you could loosen your purse-strings just a little for the sake of creativity. Let me just add my voice to the many folks here aghast at the deification of Amanda (bitch didn't even say "Thank you" for her last win) and the ignoring of Fade.
  23. What the heck?? After all the praise for Emily's and Kristina's designs, and Heidi not really "getting" Sandhya's dress... Sandyha won?? Thanks, editors, that made no sense. While I may not like Sandhya's designs, she does seem to have a clear point of view. Perhaps the team last week would have done better to follow her lead instead of Hernan's. But I doubt Hernan would have let that happen.
  24. Count me among those who didn't think Tommy's ending was happy. Let's pretend his dad was arrested or his mother left him.. maladroilt: When I first watched the pub scene where Thursday tells Morse he'll make sure he's ok, I was concentrating on Thrusday. When I rewatched it, I took a wider view. Shaun Evans' face is hysterical! His brow is furrowed as Thursday talks of retirement. He then takes a swig of beer and as Thursday muses McNutt might be a good mentor, and his eyes become huge. It's probably one of funniest things I've seen young Morse do on the entire series. peeayebee: I'll have to watch again (oh curses!), but could she have been talking of Hillary's brother? I don't remember his first name, tho' I realize it probably wasn't Henry. I didn't know there'd been an Endeavour tv movie prior to the series. it aired on WETA UK (in Washington DC area) last night. It too was all kinds of depressing. In checking Amazon, apparently the tv movie is included in the DVD/Blu-ray, along with those pesky scenes PBS deletes. (And season 2 is available for purchase.) The cable guide says that WETA UK is airing "Girl," the first episode of the series.later this afternoon and next week. Hopefully it will help ease the Endeavour withdrawal I'm going through.
