Maybe he's afraid of flying and just likes to take road trips?  Can't say that I blame him.

But most people in Houston who go skiing don't drive there.  Nor should they, actually.  There's nothing like a warm-weather flatlander trying to drive 1000 miles to a mountain destination in the winter, on a schedule.

I'd hate to be in the car with Jose when it starts getting slick and it would probably be better if we cut the day short and stayed in a motel en route instead of the condo we'd already paid for.  He'd be a menace behind the wheel, and he might be even worse as the passenger.

  3. Watching the trailer just now reminded me of so many little moments that were wonderful.  The "yes it is, no it isn't" about selling the painting just kills me.  Lea Seydoux snapping her fingers.

I've seen it twice.  I loved it the first time, and then went a second time a couple of days later, and loved it all over again.  I look at everything on the screen and marvel that someone put it there.

I don't know I think it may be more about the money with José than the travel.  He has made it clear that those big trips are budget busters as far as he's concerned and that's why he's suggesting smaller trips.  If not for the money I don't think he would be so against the travel.

Boy, I don't know.  He likes to go skiing, and talk about busting one's budget.  Lift tickets are now $200/day at major resorts!  And Rachel could go only at Christmas or spring break, when everything is more expensive, and crowded.  And it would do nothing for her desire to travel during the summer.

I'm kind of liking @buttersister's theory that Jose feels insecure outside Texas or Vegas.  (And outside Texas doesn't include ski resorts in Colorado, because they're crawling with Texans.)  He grew up in a far suburb of Houston and has stayed there, and considers going to San Antonio or Fredericksburg "travel."  I can see how he would find more far-flung travel, especially internationally, intimidating, and really wouldn't want to spend money on that

And on that note, what in the world would he go to Fredericksburg for?  I just don't see that as a destination for a man in his 30s.

  5. I usually skip the comments during the tasting, because 99% of the time they're just a recitation of the ingredients we just watched go into the dish.  I get it--you have to say something, but it still bugs.

But today, Zakarian actually said something interesting when tasting Katie's eggs.  He said the heat was "behind it."  Then he said it's not a bus, it's a trolley, which was a little weird.  But I appreciated that he was sharing an observation instead of a list.

Katie's chip bag folding thing was ridiculous.  Just because you saw it on the internet doesn't make it good.

I've never liked regular bag clips; if I'm going to bother sealing something, I want it to seal.  I found these several years ago.

    https://clip-n-seal.com/

I have a bunch of different sizes, and keep them standing up in an old 6" tall plastic container right next to the chips and cereal.  They seal perfectly, and have no problem being in the freezer (sealing bags of frozen vegetables).  If the bag is wider than the clip, just fold the top into a V and make sure the open parts are above the clip.  Man, I love these things.

I don't know anything about design and often what the judges think is awesome I think is an eyesore but whatever. I am not about the designs so much as watching the designers in the workroom and then seeing what the finished design looks like at the end. The workroom is everything to me.

For me, too.  In fact, the last couple of seasons, I started watching the beginning, until the first commercial after they go to Mood.  Then I FF to the end, to see which 3 were in the top and bottom, and which ones won and lost, and then I go back and watch the workroom and the judging.  It helps me know what to pay attention to.

I had an aerobics instructor who was insanely good at telling stories while leading the class.  Never missed a cue.  Seriously, it was amazing, and we knew all kinds of stuff about her life.

One of the stories she told, which I've never forgotten in the intervening decades, is that she'd been seriously dating this guy for a while, and decided to cook dinner for him.  She invited him, and he replied, "What's your address"?

To her credit, her reaction was, "I think I need therapy."

I can honestly say it's impossible to tell the authentic from the faux so the benefit of going to the actual prestige store to drop big $$$$ on the authentic article seems less than wise financially.

I agree, if it's bought solely as an investment.  But there's obviously a lot more going on when women are paying big money for designer goods.

I think I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum.  I always liked the idea of buying a four-door Maserati, just because nobody would realize at first glance that it's a super expensive car.  Or I wouldn't anyway--it looks like any other 4-door sedan to me.  It would be my little secret.

It was moot, for financial reasons.  And I never liked the badge--that trident looks cheesy.  Then I found out one of the Real Housewives had a 4-door Maserati, and one of the Teen Moms had a 4-door Maserati, and you know they didn't buy them so they could have the little secret that their normal-looking whip cost a ton of money.

It's all for the good.  I wouldn't want to hurt my 1998 Subaru wagon's feelings.  It already has a complex not being an Outback.

A lot of good Halloween movies coming up this week,

I'm looking forward to Frankenstein.  A nearby small-town downtown theater recently showed some old horror movies, waiting for more content to be released, and showed Bride of Frankenstein.  I'm not sure I've ever seen Frankenstein, but will remedy that shortly because TCM is showing it tonight, with Young Frankenstein right after it.  I've seen Young Frankenstein several times but when I was watching Bride of Frankenstein, I was realizing I probably missed a lot of the references.

Earlier this week, TCM had a documentary about Carl Laemmle.  I'm no historian, and knew the name only from the Laemmle chain of movie theaters in Los Angeles.  His life is super interesting, being an immigrant who found his passion at 40, tussled mightily with Thomas Edison, and was the first person to put actors' names on the screen.

One story is that he was in New York and wanted to find his brother who lived in Chicago, and someone suggested that he write a letter to a newspaper in Chicago and ask if they knew his brother.  So he did, and the person at the newspaper who opened the letter was his brother!  (I find this a lot more charming than Facebook bots serving up suggested friends.)

A highlight (for me) was this photo of Boris Karloff and James Whale taking a break (it's a picture of my TV--pardon the quality):

I'm pissed off because I am a complete brick and mortar snob and find myself defending UOP because I know too many people who did mid-life masters programs there and got good jobs and promotions.  I'm petty, I know.

I do think there's a place for programs like this, for people who have commitments (like jobs) that make it difficult to take a year off to get an advanced degree in a field in which they want to advance.  And the more who do it, the more likely it is that a person who's done it is in a hiring position, and will hire others who have done it.  So these degrees could be getting even more valuable.

For undergraduate degrees, I'm a brick and mortar snob, too, because I think the experience can be as important as the book learning.  But I understand that even undergraduate online degrees might work for the right person.  I don't think Amber is that person, and it's just a way for her to "go to Purdue" without leaving the couch.

I partly blame Covid.  If this had been in 2019, it would be hard to argue you're going to Purdue without setting foot on campus, or at the very least Purdue Global would have stood out as something different from Purdue University.  But since so many regular colleges went online during Covid, it could be hard for an inexperienced person to tell the difference.

That said, I might have to cut Amber some slack, due to ignorance.  I just looked at Purdue Global's "about" page on its website, and first of all, the headline is "Innovative Education for Working Adults."  Ahem, Amber.  No job, almost zero family commitments, and a commutable 60 miles from Lafayette.

Anyway, the website says this: "Purdue Global is part of the respected Purdue University system. One of the most prestigious research universities in the world, Purdue University is ranked in the top 10 best public universities in the U.S. by The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education.†"  That footnote?  In minuscule print, it cites some website for university rankings, and adds, "Rankings apply to Purdue University West Lafayette and not to Purdue Global."  That's some sheisty shit there.

And then the Purdue Global page has the gall to talk about the proud tradition of Purdue athletics:  "Today, Purdue competes in the Big Ten Conference—the preeminent collection of institutions in the nation..."  Yes, it does.  And what does that have to do with Purdue Global

    https://www.purdueglobal.edu/about/about-purdue-global/

The irony of all of this is that a college education, in the way I think of college educations, would train a person to notice things and think about them, which would make them less susceptible to marketing ploys like this one.  Of course in this instance by the time you gain those skills, it's too late.

So while it irks me no end that Amber says she's going to Purdue and is wearing a Purdue sweatshirt, it might not be entirely her fault.  Which irks me even more.

My condolences to Purdue alumni.  I'd be embarrassed.  And this is coming from someone with a degree from the University of Southern California!  🤣

Off-topic remark:  if you have the option, get a DVR--it will completely change tv for you.  You will no longer watch commercials; there will always be ten things waiting for you that you truly want to see; you will pause and scrutinize and delete Project Runway on your own time.  <smile>

    I completely agree.

But I kick it old school with DirecTV and one TV, and have a standalone Magnavox DVR, which is like a VCR but with a hard drive in it instead of tapes.  I have to tell it what to record, like you had to do with VCRs, but I can also watch things without recording them, and have a 6-hour cache to run stuff back or to start late and be able to skip commercials if it's something I haven't recorded.

I know an integrated DVR or Tivo would be "better," but setting the timers on my Magnavox tricks me into thinking I still have some agency over my TV viewing, and it's not some robot deciding what I want to watch.

It may very well be true that UOP marketed to Amber's brother and they had been cited for their marketing in the past but that does not negate the fact that it an accredited school and a lot of people who go back to school for higher degrees (usually older people who have day jobs and families) do study an accredited not easy program in whatever field and get degrees that are recognized by employers and allow them to promote and advance in their careers.

My problem is that someone closely related to Amber got a 3.97 GPA at University of Phoenix.

Myrla on Unfiltered definitely threw shade at Bao - wonder what the story is there?

Yeah.  When Johnny was saying some stuff about Bao, Myrla was uh-huhing.  She's usually content to just be silent, so I wonder what she knows.

    10 hours ago, Bees52 said:

It's weird. He explains on there about his relationship with Bao's "best friend" Sarah, as she's a long-time mutual friend of theirs from when they were all in college. He goes to her for advice and she picks him up when he's down. Sounds like she's more his best friend, than Bao's.

On the show it sure didn't sound like Johnny knew Sarah as anything but Bao's friend, which made the whole thing so heinous--calling Bao's best friend behind her back.  But on Unfiltered Johnny said he and Sarah went to high school together as well as college.  It's not clear how Bao knows her, since she went to a different college.  Johnny said he's kept in touch with Sarah more than Bao, but I don't think that necessarily means they're best friends, because he hardly kept in touch with Bao.

I think Sarah is Bao's "best friend" by default, because Bao said she doesn't have a lot of women friends.

Also, as far as knowing each other before the show, on Unfiltered Johnny said that he and Gil we in the same class in middle school, which was just a few blocks from Gil's apartment.  Johnny didn't remember, but Gil had yearbooks.

6 hours ago, Baltimore Betty said:

Myrla may not be able to shop as often but if she rethought about buying ugly, ill fitting, unflattering clothing and started to think about shopping for furniture and other household items she may get excited about saving for a house.

I think it may be clothing specific.  On Unfiltered she said her brother is a year older than she is, and she wore his hand-me-downs.  They showed this picture (the glare isn't me--it's from the lights in the studio or whatever):

    Myrla.thumb.JPG.e5a7d3fe715c81c95044ad3b3d30ca4a.JPG

She also said she grew up a tomboy, and it didn't sound like she really chose that.  So I'm beginning to understand her desire for fancy girly things.

That "Roma" on her jersey is I'm assuming her home town, which is on the Mexican border in the middle of nowhere.  She definitely has impressively clawed her way up from real poverty.

Also on Unfiltered, she was really funny telling a story Gil had told her from he was little.  He did something bad and knew his dad would be really mad, so he decided to escape to his mom's house and figured out how to get a taxi and his dad showed up just as he was getting in, and his dad managed to be at his mom's house before Gil arrived in the cab.

She was laughing so hard, and it made me believe that there are some genuine interactions between these people, and I wish we could see them.

What kind of school is Phoenix?  Good or bad. I never heard of it!

Have you ever heard of "University of Phoenix"?  That's usually what it's called in their advertising--not just "Phoenix."  They settled a complaint by the FTC about their marketing practices, paying $50 million to the FTC and forgiving $141 million in debts owed by some former students.  (So what happens to the ones who were misled by the advertising but actually paid for their degrees?  Is the real knowledge these Phoenicians got with their degree the life lesson that it's better to borrow than to pay?)

    From a Washington Post article:

"Investigators say the University of Phoenix ran an advertising campaign that featured Microsoft, Twitter, Adobe and Yahoo, giving a false impression the school worked with those companies to employ its students. There was no such partnership, according to the FTC, a charge the university disputes."

"According to the complaint, the misleading marketing campaign targeted active-duty service members, veterans and military spouses. The university has been the largest recipient of post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits since the program’s inception more than a decade ago."

But back to the show...Mr. 3.97 warns that if Amber gets anything other than an "A-plus" for her final grade, she can kiss her 4.0 goodbye.  At all the colleges I attended (mostly famous football schools), an A was the highest grade, and it was 4.0 grade points.  There was no A-plus.  Maybe Mr. 3.97 enrolled in some sort of University of Phoenix Platinum Plan that granted A-pluses?  But even if he did, an A-plus would be more than 4.0 grade points, so you could still have a 4.0 GPA with zero A-pluses if every other grade was an A.

So many questions.  Although it's becoming clear that my original assumption, that Amber doesn't have anybody in her life who knows anything about a real college like Purdue University, is looking to be correct.  Well except for all the MTV staff, of course, whose livelihood depends on her continuing to be ignorant and clueless, and who should have a hard time sleeping at night.

  20. Amber's brother tells her that she doesn't have to be the smartest person, she just needs to be smarter than the rest.  If you're smarter than the rest, doesn't that make you the smartest person?

But what do I know?  I didn't graduate from college with a 3.97 GPA.

But that brings up the issue of Amber's being so entirely clueless about what exactly Purdue University Global is.  I was thinking she didn't know anybody with enough real college experience to tell her that she never applied to Purdue University, was never accepted by Purdue University, isn't attending Purdue University, and isn't going to get a degree from Purdue University (or any university, but I digress).

Where's Mr. 3.97 in all this?  I'm beginning to wonder where he attained his 3.97 GPA.

Honest question… given the streetwear challenge, and the models they received initially what should they have done?

Because they didn’t have a model that was the ethnicity they wanted, designed for that model’s ethnicity?

or design what they wanted because the model is just a hanger/walker for the clothes?

Actually, a hybrid of the two--design a streetwear look they want, that isn't dependent on a written/painted message that then makes it dependent on the model.

IMHO, allowing contestants to change models because they think their clothes will look better on another model, whether it be because of size, race, ethnicity, gender or any other quality, is bogus.

But I think it was more than just "looking better" in Prajje's case, because the model was not only wearing the clothes but representing them.  And that's why I hate "message" clothes in a competition.  It should be about the design, fit, silhouette, fabric choice, and construction.  Not about what's written on the back.

In this case, the message was acceptable to the judges, but what if it wasn't?  What if it was a coat made of confederate flags that had "It Was Never About Slavery" on the back?  There's not a chance in hell the judges would declare that the winner even if it were otherwise the most impeccable garment in PR history, and even if every other garment on the runway looked cheap, had a puckered seams and an unfinished hem, was too short (now that Heidi's gone), and made the model look fat.

And maybe that's fair--judges can find whatever they want to be abhorrent.  But that's not why I watch a show about making fashion.

And now that I think about it, couldn't it be argued that painting a picture of the lady crying blood or some words expressing the message is unimaginative and literal?
