  1. Wow, all the non-compete intricacies and rules are crazy! One of my favorite things to do is snark and make fun of my managers and company, past or present. ;-)
  2. Great points and incisive post, @film noire. A hundred virtual upvotes.
  3. What if, in a fit of Roseanne nuttiness, she hires Tom Arnold!? The backstage gossip and scandals were bad enough in the 90s but will be merciless in the Internet/social media age. I have no confidence in Roseanne's ability to keep it together as exec producer.
  4. So true and despairingly sad. Makes me wonder how different Jean's life might have been if her mind hadn't stepped in to repress the horror and safeguard her.
  5. The show dressed Dorothy exclusively from Discount Tunic Town, but that is horrifying! What are those rolls for?! Does anyone remember that episode? Why would a divorced woman in her sixties wear a white gown and veil anyway, much less an unromantic, unfanciful person like Dorothy? Yeesh.
  6. Oh gosh, wedding dresses. I watched Say Yes to the Dress and all its spinoffs and copycats for years and years, despite disliking many of the brides and most of their entourages. I'm still amazed at the number of women who want to serve up the goods to all and sundry on their wedding days. Anyway, I've finally weened myself off the shows and satisfy my craving by occasionally browsing designer collections online. For whatever weird reason, I just like looking at wedding gowns!
  7. It's typical for adult predators to home in on the most vulnerable children, but for a priest to use the confessional to target those who were already violated is so evil and depraved I can't even fathom it.
  8. I wasn't sure if Jeff was deliberately being portrayed as having sketchy undertones or if my personal distaste for Anthony Bourdain colored my perception, but I don't think anyone was surprised when he turned assy.
  9. Whereas I fast-forwarded that taxi scene after 10 seconds or so. I got it, already! Heh. Realistically, I'm another tick on viewer ratings which is good for show creators, but I'd suspect a lot of them would hate my half-assedly watching ways. I was in a movie theater recently and unconsciously started pressing my thumb down in an attempt to FF the movie.
  10. The show has gradually become 20% mystery and 80% interpersonal drama. It's not why I started watching and I'm probably more exasperated with everyone (but especially Sidney) because of that.
  11. I don't know why I stopped, either, because my skin surely ain't improving with age! The discussion prompted me to browse online and I got sucked in by a facial peel with 50% glycolic acid. Ouch? Has anyone used something similar? I'll let you know how it goes. The instructions (and user reviews) are emphatic about making a baking soda mixture to neutralize the skin, so it isn't messing around.
  12. The panelists on the Pop Culture Happy Hour podcast discussed the show recently and were unanimously over the moon about the creative risks Aziz and Alan took, the bubble episodes and Italy in particular. Okay I can see that, but I don't watch TV as if I'm at an art museum gazing at works by old masters, fascinated by the brush strokes. If I'm more intrigued by the sausage making (specific shots, cinematography, allusions to classic films, etc.) than drawn in by the story, that's not a success for me. In the end, I just didn't care about Dev and Francesca, not the least because I never understood who she was as a person. As NY Magazine put it, "And yet, here we are again, somehow, watching a beautiful, whimsical love interest help our hero find the unexpected magic in his day-to-day life." In general, I'm not that interested in picking apart TV or movies to find hidden meaning. The final bed scene has already spawned a hundred articles dissecting what was going on, but not getting an answer frankly leaves me more impatient than intrigued. It also seemed to me like a deliberate throwback to The Graduate, which why, again? Even if I view it as a cliffhanger for season 3, Aziz has said he feels like he's sufficiently told the story of a 30-something New Yorker looking for love and has no idea if or when he'll product another season. If there is and if it picks up with Francesca again, I'm not interested.
  13. I was going to recommend Alpha Hydrox, too -- it may also be the cheapest. No reason to spend more on the expensive brands since the ingredients are the same! You have to keep after it, but it does help eventually. In other news, it's only May and I'm sick of hot summer temperatures already. Oh, Florida, how you vex me.
  14. It's possible neither Cathy or Russell knew the full extent of the abuse since the girls were too terrified and brainwashed to give details. (And in Jean's case, she was so naive about sex that she didn't even fully realize what it was.) Vague reports by the victims that "something bad" happening could mean any number of things and thus be easier for adults to explain away in their own minds. I'm NOT blaming anyone in hindsight, but speaking as a former Catholic high school girl during that same time period, there was just more of a pained acceptance that "this is what happens to women sometimes." There weren't mandatory reporting laws and certainly nobody challenged or stood up to the priests. Even today, estimates are that only 16% of sexual violence is reported to law enforcement.
  15. I live in a retirement community with strict covenants that don't allow yard decorations. More and more restrictions were put in place as the development grew, but they weren't retroactive so the original neighborhoods from 30 years ago still have gnomes, ceramic duck families, bendover signs and whatnot. Owners in the "historic" district can also paint their houses any color they want and it's a much more interesting and fun place to drive through than the barren looking newer developments. Those vignettes at least show some creativity and care!
  16. This was too heartbreaking/stomach churning and I had to quit halfway through episode 3 in favor of catching up through forums and articles. Unsolved cases get under my skin in a crawly way. I actually let the series play through unwatched so Netflix can notch my viewer stats. It's so well made and worthwhile and I want to give whatever small encouragement I can to Netflix to continue supporting nonfiction series.
  17. Interesting suggestions, @Delwyn! Less Trump coverage would be great by me, but I'm sure TDS would then get slammed for "ignoring" important news. I'm an unabashed fan of Trevor and the show, especially his outsider perspective as @Cyranetta mentioned. I dipped into Jon's version maybe 25 times in the years he was on and never watched The Colbert Report, so I didn't have any preexisting favoritism or nostalgia. Trevor had the expected beginners hiccups and nerves but he's since become very polished. I record every late night talk show but rarely watch any of the celebrity interviews because who cares. I really appreciate that Trevor is steering the show away from those.
  18. Agh, Stanten! Likable, kind, athletic, cute, intelligent, gainfully employed in a job he loves ... and the show has twice matched him with shallow, preening women who can't get past their own self-sabotaging neuroses. I'm drawn to quiet, introspective people, so the former Gates brother-in-law was an unpolished gem to me; he just needed some confidence back after his traumatic divorce. A lot of white collar women love blue collar men who get "dirty" at work! He's good looking, too. I hated to see him so down on himself and wish him well with whomever he's dating. I just hope she's not someone who's going to spike his heart on her high heels just for the fun of it. If anyone here watches Married at First Sight Second Chances, I thought Matt, the burn survivor in the green slacks and pink shirt would have been a great match for Danielle. He's an actual mature 26-year-old, unlike Cody.
  19. I feel the same way about Roseanne as I do about Will and Grace: not in a hundred years. I used to be a viewer and fan of both, so maaaaaybe I'd check them out if they were being remade with different actors (although I can't fathom the point of that, either), but same shit/different day? Nope. I've moved far, far on.
  20. Sigh. You know, I'm all for the representation of different ethnicities on the show. A variety of cultures, religious beliefs, upbringings, etc., make the show more interesting to me. But if what we suspect is true, that after initial screenings the pool of TV-ready, acceptable applicants is pretty small, then maybe the experts shouldn't match minority couples just because they want the show to be "diverse." I don't pretend to see inside their minds (and there have been plenty of disastrous Caucasian pairings), but the show has really done badly by its African-American couples.
  21. Nice trailer! I like all the actors. When the show was first announced, wasn't Sheldon going to be 12? That would make his age align better but would have put him in college, which was perhaps more problematic than high school in terms of storytelling. TBBT has never specified which universities Sheldon attended,* but I assume he would still have been living at home and commuting for undergrad. I don't want to spoil my own enjoyment by being an annoying stickler for detail, but I will be disappointed if the Cooper house isn't on cinder blocks. *We do know he spent a summer at the Heidelberg Institute at 15. Ah, the unexpected enema. ;-)
  22. I'm also enjoying this season, although that doesn't seem like quite the right word because it's been sad as balls. Every main character's love life is mightily screwed because of societal norms and expectations. I've never been a fan of Amanda's but even she hasn't been bothering me this go around -- maybe because she finally stopped being a tight ass, admitted to herself she didn't want the life her parents have, and left. Poor Sidney, forced to choose between religion and love, but my heart broke the hardest for Leonard. I'm so glad he didn't go ahead with an unhappy, doomed marriage.
  23. The CW does not give one everloving shit what a 65-year-old person thinks* but while the story looks interesting, the soundtrack is annoyingly obtrusive to me. (Not to say that a trailer is always indicative of how a show will be, but in this case I'm pretty sure it is.) * Although I'm fairly certain I have more disposable income than 90% of teens and working millennials.
  24. Well, balls. I'm only a casual Trek viewer, but this looks FABULOUS! I will totally put Hulu on hold for three months, hold my nose, and subscribe to CBS instead.
  25. Grr! I order pasta from Pizza Hut every so often, and this week I opened the cardboard box and saw that the aluminum container was an inch shorter. They hadn't modified the box size yet, so the difference was very obvious. The bread sticks were also an inch shorter. Ya know, I'm the idiot for paying $8.99 (plus delivery) for baked ziti in the first place, but I'd much rather they freaking raised the price a dollar than reduce the portion size.
