I remember in one of the podcasts I had listened to on the case, it came out that Dan did have an alarm system, but that when Betty drove her car into his front door, it damaged the security system and Dan never got around to replacing it! Talk about irony. You'd have to think in this day and age with all the high tech alarm systems and cameras, things you can control from a smart phone, Dan would have had a state of the art security system and this probably would not have happened. Then again, Betty was so enraged and off the charts, and not exactly deterred by much - she probably would have found some way.

That's a good point. I feel like one reason she bought that house was so she could go drink up there without prying eyes or "paparazzi" trying to get pictures of her drinking. Now that she just drinks again out in the open, no need to do so in secrecy. Also, I think she likes being part of the "scene" and in the middle of the Hamptons scene. She probably just went through a brief period where she was embarrassed by her arrest and trying to lay low for awhile. She doesn't strike me as one who wants a peaceful, quiet place to go recharge and reflect and enjoy her own company. I don't think she bought the house to make money re-selling it though. Remember how she was trying to borrow money from strangers to ridiculously overpay for that other house? And then she had to settle for this one because it was in her "budget." (As Bethenny oh so kindly got in that dig.) I think it was just an impulse buy during a manic period. It was kind of an odd house. That guest room with the stove in it? Lol.

In Stumbo's book, she wrote that Betty received a newspaper clipping with a picture of Dan and Linda anonymously in the mail and that someone had written on the photo, "EAT YOUR HEART OUT, BITCH!!!" However, in Stumbo's book, she writes that Betty showed the photo note to everyone and that her friends looked at it and the all capital letters and three exclamation points looked like Betty's own notes. Nearly everyone suspected that Betty had sent the photo to herself. (Pages 225-226)

As far as being able to find a local attorney who would take on Dan, I think it was really a little of both. Yes, it's a tight knit community and there were probably many local lawyers who had a conflict of interest or didn't want to take on Dan Broderick. At the same time, he was a medical malpractice attorney/plantiff attorney/civil, not family law, and it was a big money case with a lot of assets and properties, and there were likely many local lawyers who would have loved to take on the case, especially one where they knew they would get paid. Betty was a very difficult client, she also didn't like what they had to tell her, she refused the majority of counseling, she vandalized property, drove her car through Dan's front door, left insane voice mails that were abusive to her children, didn't listen to any legal advice. Dan's friend, an attorney Sharon Blanchet talks about this here - (if you can stand the host's kinda grating voice (imo)..It starts about the 31:50 mark... (Sharon was a friend of Dan so she's likely biased in that regard, but she also is an attorney and speaks on it here.) Sharon speaks very highly of Dan's attorney Dan Jaffe. That guy was her attorney, Daniel Jaffe. Basically that meeting was more about the house than the whole divorce settlement. He was really caught in the middle of all the insanity. Betty didn't want to sell the house - at all. She didn't want to be getting the divorce. Dan wanted to sell the house as quickly as possible - he was now paying three mortgages on homes - his, hers, and the Coral Reef property. There had previously been one buyer lined up - but Betty refused to sign the papers properly and the buyer walked out in frustration. A second buyer was found months later, but Betty was doing the same thing and giving the run-around. Jaffe flew up from Beverly Hills to try to deal with this - doing his best to represent Betty. They drove to Dan Broderick's attorney's office to finally finalize the paperwork. Jaffe had negotiated not only that Dan would pay Betty half the selling price, but an additional $16,000 for Betty to make repairs on her own home. Jaffe's attorney fee was also supposed to come out of the proceeds. But upon arriving at Dan Broderick's attorney's office, Betty refused to get out of the car. Jaffe went inside, talked to Dan and his attorney, finalized the papers, brought them out to Betty to sign - and now cornered without being able to pull her usual tricks, Betty refused. She said she "had to think about it." Jaffe flew back to LA, exasperated. So I don't think he was complaining about the length of the flight or hassle as much as it was a total waste of his time and he was dealing with an unreasonable client. She was stalling and holding up the house sale. The next week, a judge agreed. Dan Broderick got a court order to sell the house without Betty's consent. Something Jaffe said he told Betty was not only standard, but probable in cases where one spouse in a divorce was holding up a house sale. (My summary from Bella Stumbo's books and other articles)

I thought the turkey baster comment was vile. And even Luann was all haha, that's a good one. It's actually not. Dorinda is nasty and insensitive and mean. And you know, a 40 something year old woman without kids, who wanted a family enough to freeze her eggs, is in a totally different position making relationship decisions than these older women who had their children and their families. She's probably been through enough dark periods to know she wants to take the chance on this. But the best thing she is doing is moving away from these fake women who clearly don't have her back. Spare her the "I'll always be here for you" crap. They only want her to end up miserable just like they are. But what kind of woman even makes mocking comments about another woman wanting to possibly have a family of her own?? Dorinda is so ugly to me, inside and out.

I've been reading Stumbo's book. It's pretty compelling. They were both so dysfunctional. Although Betty was clearly mentally unstable. I don't think she was insane, but she definitely had some major personality disorders going on. Dan tried to control her through the court system, because that is what he knew how to manipulate, but in reality, the lady needed major help and intervention that went well beyond a divorce fight. Dan and the judges would fine her or even throw her in jail for brief periods. But just the amount of psycho, crude, obscene voice mails alone that she would leave on her children's answering machine showed this was a women needed major psychological help. Yea, Stumbo almost seems obsessed with letting the readers know how fat Betty had gotten, how ugly, how frumpy, how she was covered in rolls of fat, how many chins she had, how her friends thought she looked like a fat pig. I mean we get the picture, but Stumbo really hammers the point throughout the book. Definitely not feeling Peet in the role.

The original movie is free to watch on YouTube! I feel like I watched that on Lifetime so many times. Betty is nuts and sounds to this day like she never felt much remorse, but it's such a compelling case. I'm sure there are other women whose husbands discarded them for younger models have felt rage and hurt and maybe even a fantasy of doing the same - but would never act on it. This lady was off her rocker. Family Ties mom played the part perfectly. I like Amanda Peet, but this role doesn't seem to fit.

Agreed. I like her too, but thought that was odd she shared that. (It was on a Today Show segment about vacations with family.) Especially because it was so new in the relationship and she was a fiance, not the stepmom. Those family dynamics should be private or the kind of thing she shared fifteen years later once everyone is all grown up. I also thought it was a flag her fiance said to his daughter, "Don’t you want me to be happy?" - that's a huge demand/ask of an 11 year old. (Instead of something like, "this isn't how we treat someone important to me" or whatever.) Sigh - new relationships with blended families can be tough. It doesn't make it any less hard when they end. But I probably would have kept that stuff off tv.

She seemed so happy when she talked about how she met him online dating and then when they got engaged. It's so hard to meet someone after age 40 and hard if they already have kids. I know she did a segment at one point on how she had frozen her eggs and maybe wanted kids some day. Break ups are always hard, but I feel like it's even harder when you are older and think you finally met the one. I would think that work environment is tough in that the Today Show is soooo over the top relationship/baby/family centric. Although, I like the Today Show's April 6 segment: "Jill Martin shares how she and fiancé Erik are maintaining a healthy relationship while under self-quarantine." The Today Show has gotten beyond annoying - it's like every segment is all about their personal lives. Back in the day, it was actually some semblance of "news."

I do like how Bethenny is able to get the big dollar donations. I have no idea the best way to allocate resources. But I do think it's impressive how much she is able to (quickly!) raise in times of crisis. For whatever reason, people are willing and motivated to give to her organization where other relief organizations just don't elicit that same kind of response. Politics aside, I sincerely enjoy seeing her use her platform for good.
