  1. I've read the books, but I've retained almost nothing from them, LOL. Did Mance die in the books? I've read that TV GOT is going to do their own thing for the remainder of the series, so I'm not sure if they are veering off here or what?
  2. "The walking stick Ragnar was using now does add to showing his aging though." Without any special aging make-up Fimmel sells it that he has aged since we first met him (as a contrast see Jeremy Piven in Mr Selfridge, although at least a decade has passed in that show Piven seems to be preserved in aspic.) To be honest I was only vaguely aware of Fimmel as an "underwear" model, but the dude can act.
  3. Frankly, I would totally rather be with Eckbert (and the delicious Linus Roche) than that self-flagellating asswipe of a son. I can't believe how sumptuous the filming of the series is--that candle-lit scene with the masked princess at the end was breath-taking. Obviously, I want Floki to get his comeuppance for murdering Ragnar's BFF. Linus Roche was hilarious as double-crossing scheming Eckbert.
  4. Damn, I'll admit I cried during the burial scene--Fimmel was tremendous, he is simply great in this role I never tire of seeing his reaction scenes. Oh and I've always loved that we get Vikings and then immediately after GoTs starts up.
  5. I can't believe the quality of VIKINGS which became especially clear to me when I tried to watch "Sons of Liberty," which was dramatized miniseries about the American Revolution that aired on the History Channel, it just looked cheap in comparison. re Travis Fimmel, he is so terrific as Ragnar, and if he is a disinterested dimwit in true life, more the kudos to him as an actor.
  6. I think that research has shown that obesity has a strong genetic component, but that fact does NOT absolve the obese person from taking control of their eating habits--even more important I honestly think is exercise, the fact is that these super obese people stop moving and the weight piles on. I guess that one thing to sort of look forward to is that after menopause I basically lost that driving appetite and lost 40 pounds, I also have a dog that I walk at least once a day every day, exercise is key.
  7. "What was the big growth between her legs?"--->as mentioned above, her vagina (yes freakish, but fat migrates to every part of the body, it has to go somewhere.) The husband intrigues me, clearly there can be no sex in this relationship, and she wasn't small when they met so who knows if there ever was? Obviously there is something else going on there. Interestingly Laura's mother wasn't particularly big, but the daughters were, and sadly, the little nieces are going in the same direction. Here is my thing, I grew up as a fat child, my parents divorced and I grew up with my Dad's family none of whom had any weight issues (my mother was the obese one and was constantly fighting it) Looking back I can say that I was never a normal weight and I will say that I had a genetic predisposition for weight, and no, no molestation either, but it was not a forgone conclusion that I would be obese, at the bottom of it all is the parent, the parent needs to take charge of the child's eating habits, food should never be used to quiet a willful child (which I assume was the issue in my case.) I love my family (all gone now) but they had no issue with food themselves and simply didn't understand that they needed to exert some control over my eating habits.
  8. re how can parent let their child become 150 pounds at 5, I honestly believe that some parents just close their eyes to what is happening, I was a fat child (maybe not as fat as Amber but definitely fat) and I think in my case that they thought that the weight would magically disappear when I got older (it didn't.) Food can also be a way of quieting a difficult child (I was a horrible child, bright but willful, and in retrospect I think that shoving a bottle in my face, and later allowing me sole control over my diet, was one way to calm my tantrums.)
  9. Well I, and the Doctor apparently, are so relieved that Clara is still young (rolls eyes.) The Doctor is a crone, but the companion is forever young, and that is all that is important I suppose (and, oh yeah, bah humbug!)
  10. John Schnabel is part of my father's generation, so I got a bit misty watching this episode (my dad died 11 years ago this month.) Love Parker, love the family. I have zero interest in Toad and Co., but this family is wonderful (and Parker is a cutie, and Roger isn't bad either!)
  11. Davies era eh? Yeah that makes sense, I suppose that Moffet wouldn't cast Tate or similar, judging by the companions that are his...on the other hand Davies was responsible for the putrid Rose-Doctor "romance" arc, because an ageless alien wouldn't be able to resist the attractions of a modern day teenager. Then again, maybe I am being unfair to Moffet because I actually adored Alex Kingston.
  12. Loved Donna dearly, just was watching "The Library" again--now that was a great story arc. One thing I found sort of sad-funny was how many times the writers emphasised that absolutely, positively Donna and the Doctor weren't an "item" (Donna was too plain? or too old--despite the fact that she and Tenant are about the same age.) Casting Tate was the best idea that Moffat ever had. And speaking of watching Tenant again, sorry I simply do not like Capaldi as the Doctor, it isn't just that he is older than the last 3 Doctors, it is also that Capaldi looks so frail to me.
  13. Go Parker! Gotta love that kid. As for Toad....
  14. Dear God, the next time someone insists that weight issues aren't somewhat inheritable, they need to watch the latest episode with Nancy and her even shorter and fatter daughter---yes, I realize that Nancy tends to cook high-fat, high sugar foods, but there is no denying the odd shape of her body which her unfortunate daughter has inherited. Then to have Nancy pronouncing on healthy fresh food when she looks so unhealthy herself? Just no. I say this as someone who is overweight, but recently lost 30+lbs through exercise mostly---I eat what I want just less of it. Her delivery on camera remains odd, I can't quite figure out how she got a show on HGTV (I won't even make a "who did she blow" joke on the issue.)
  15. No, not just you, if they told me that Capaldi was 70 I wouldn't contest it. I'm not in love with his Doctor, and suspect that I won't be--I prefer a more "connected" Doctor ala Tennant, and Smith (a Doctor who is more nurturing of the human race.) Clara is a cypher, yes as someone said just another "pretty 20 something," which is why Donna was so wonderful (although I detested the whole "we're not dating" schtick in the Donna storyline) and refreshing, and I also liked River Song because damn Alex Kingston is hot, and despite the age difference I bought her and the Doctor as an "item." If the young female soldier is the new companion, I'm all for it, she is feisty and not overly girly and could kick the old man's arse.
  16. Damn someone is sensitive about Capaldi's age, hehe, they kept bringing it up enough. I like Capaldi, and have watched him since "Lair of the White Worm," but Jesus, he really is a throwback to the first Doctor in that he is in his mid-50's but looks even older! Look, I am Capaldi's age roughly, but I liked the younger Doctors (and Eccleston, and Tennant weren't kids exactly) Since I'm not a child I rather enjoyed the always simmering undercurrent of attraction between the Doctor and his companions (of both sexes), but all that "you thought that I was your boyfriend" stuff. tonight..just no, please end it with this episode. ETA, oh hell yeah Jenny looked hot, the Victorian layers of underwear, etc probably was as uncomfortable as all get out to wear, but it is alluring one must confess.
