  1. @Scarlett45My granddaughter's other grandparents have a camper and I know they keep a stash of kids toys and games in it for when my son's family camps (tent) near them. Because it stays in the camper, it's a special occasion when they play with them. They might like a small basket of toys or crafts. Coloring books and crayons, sticker book, magic ink book, small portable games, sand toys. Or you could go the food route and get them s'more supples for the campfire.

    Yes, that's the plan.

It's been very cold here for the last few days - too uncomfortable for me to take my camp cot down to the car to try it out. My cousin's husband had built me a lovely custom platform for the other minivan (an old Honda), for my camping mattress. But now I'm back to the cot - at least for now. I expect to have to level it a bit as the minivan floor slopes down from back to front.

Luckily, my "new" van is a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan - the best-selling minivan of that year. There are lots of YT videos showing how people have tricked out those vans for camping. All the way from elaborate custom builds, to minimalist no-builds, and just about everything in between. I've sort of followed one YT'er for a few years, from her getting a minivan and fixing it up for her first trip, through some changes, and she really grew her YT channel. Just this week I learned via YT that she had Fiberine install a high top (I think 16 inches) on the minivan. She's INTO this!!

In the meantime, I got new tires for my new ride, and feel much better about driving it in winter weather.

About minivans - I found this article from 2020 which is a walk through the history of minivans, with lots of photos. That article talks about the decline of minivans, but they seem to be making somewhat of a comeback: https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/02/success/minivans-cool-again/index.html. Certainly they can be hard to find; I know there's a chip shortage for cars, etc., but I think part of it is the minivan's popularity.

    ETA: here she is -

Can you share the youtubers name please? I'd love to convince DH to camp again!

  3. @lookeyloo I especially liked your line that " we can live through these things and come out mostly okay and functional."

Your post made me reflect on doing something like this and I don't know that I could relive some moments. My youngest sister suffers from depression and I think may be bi-polar. She has refused meds and we've been estranged for over 15 years. My brother has begun to reach out to her and will probaby see her next month. I said he's a better person than me because she's said some things to me that I'm not ready to sweep under the rug.

I like @crazy8s idea of answering some other questions. That might put less pressure on you.

Amy: I'll always be attacked b/c of my maiden name.

    Pick a lane, you moron!

I may have a faulty memory, but at one point wasn't she using her Dad's name? I thought she switched to Duggar when she appeared on the show to start her country singing career.

I agree with @Suzn.  People just don't know what to say.  I am still experiencing that after the loss of Sweet Son.  I now just say "fine" even though I am not fine but no one really wants to know that.  Or sometimes I say "coping" or "managing".

If you don't mind me asking; would you prefer people not ask, or just say that they're thinking of you. I don't really like the question of how are you, for the reasons you state. Do you have anything you'd LIKE to hear?

I have a touch screen on my laptop.  I'm finding it easier to change the size using that on the pages that need it.  I have a mental note now to never be without the touch screen.

Thanks for the tip. I have touch screen and hadn't even thought to use that.

If you can, please say a prayer for the safe return of a 9 year-old little boy in my area.  He didn’t get on the bus yesterday and was last seen running into the woods.  It’s going to be in the 20’s tonight….so it’s imperative they locate him quickly, it’s just heartbreaking.  FBI and local authorizes have been searching since yesterday.

The boy has been found. I just clicked on the article and it's been updated.

  8. Jill's post in unbelievable!! Having the whole Rod clan at her mom's can't be calming. The amount of personal information Jill shares is outrageous and is a lesson to all children on what NOT to share about parents. Not to mention you don't ask for donations when you've just rented a car, gone on vacation, ate out and toured Sea World.

And why isn't all her godly praying doing anything?

  9. I was reading CNN online and saw this picture. It looks like JD to me. Have we underestimated medicorps? It looks like they're actually helping. With all of the evacuations needed on Pine Island and Sanibel, wouldn't there have to be coordination with officials?

ETA to add caption. Members of mediccorps.org help evacuate Tom Acerbo on Pine Island, Florida, on Saturday.221001234736-02-hurricane-ian-south-carolina-florida-repairs-sunday.jpg

  10. We've talked on here about colonoscopies and the prep we have to go through. I have to share that my DH is having one tomorrow and he drank his first dose of prep all in one drink, no gagging, no having to take breaks, no tricks to make it go down easier. I was practically gagging thinking of what it was like. I am so jealous!!!

Are these sights along Route 66?  I've always wanted to check out portions of that highway.  I enjoyed seeing the mid century motels on it in Flagstaff.  I wonder if they are still there as I saw them in the mid 90s.

They are along Route 66. We did a long trip from near Chicago to Albuquerque and stopped at a bunch of weird stuff. It was a good way to break up the trip.
