I loved this episode. Very clever story idea from the writers. The kiss at the end was the perfect ending.

Yes, the "gilding" was a huge hint.

Isaac seemed to come into yesterday's game with a new determination to be the first on the buzzer, and bring home a win. I'm glad he won. I couldn't believe that Neilesh missed the gold leaf clue. To me that was almost first grader knowledge. Of course, when I was in middle school I was obsessed with ancient Egypt and have read a lot about the embalming process and burial rituals, so I was 99% sure it was gold leaf. I want Isaac and Adriana to both have 2 wins.

Thank goodness I am not the only one who thought the wife was a piece of work. Of course, she got here way,and she can live near her friends. If I had taken a shot of booze every time she said she wanted to be near friends, I would have been drunk by the first commercial. All she wanted was white counters and a nice kitchen to take photos in. I doubt she can cook anything. The husband seemed very nice and yes, chill, but she was high maintenance to the max. Wonder if that marriage will last. Also, how much $$ does a tall building window washer and a content creator (whatever that is) make? That house was $500,000+ if I remember correctly. Exhausted is a good word to use to describe how I felt too at the end of that episode. I also watched the one about he couple in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with the wife's mother planning to live with them. She has/had cancer, and wanted to have a space to call her own within the house. The wife's voice drove me nuts, and I hated that she was planning to paint the kitchen cabinets lime green, but i's her house, and she stated several times that she loved color and is a maximalist, so that might be a house worth visiting in a follow up show if HGTV ever does that again. I liked the house they bought, but it was basically a no brainer compared to the other 2 that were shown.

I read a PBS article today regarding he actors reactions to acting with a baby. Turns out they used 5 babies to portray "James" because babies are allowed a very limited time on sets. All of the actors said they enjoyed having the babies around, and talked about the challenges of using real babies. -
So glad that I was not the only person who kept getting confused about who was who. I had recorded the episode and actually reversed the recording a couple of times to make sure I was keeping up with the characters.

In the case of my brother, he knew the prices were high in the Portland area, and it took him a year to find a house, while all the time prices were rising. It was like chasing the finish line.

Yes, the Missing Persons guy is who I was thinking of, not the ME. Thank you for that info.
-
Refresh my memory, please. Did I imagine it, or did the original ME perhaps take a personal interest in Vera, but she never seemed to notice him beyond morgue interactions? Did the actor who played the original ME die, or am I confusing him with the ME from Midsommer Murders who did pass away after leaving that series? Maybe I watch too many British TV shows, lol.

I'm catching up on a many HH episodes that I have not watched recently. Finding some are repackaged beach house/vacation home episodes, so I just delete them. Within the last week (I think) was an episode about a couple moving from southern California to the Seattle area, and they professed sticker shock at the price of houses in Seattle. Have they not read a news article in several years? Their budget was around a million, which is a figure I cannot even imagine paying for a house, so I obviously will not be moving to Seattle to live in a house that would be about $400,000-$500,000 where I live. It always amazes me that so many of the HH's set a "firm" budget, and then somehow find another $100,000+ to add when they find a house that cost more than they budgeted for. I did like the house that the Seattle couple bought, but it was in Tacoma, and not Seattle, which made it more affordable, but still over a million. I do love so many of the houses that they show in the Pacific NW, and have often thought I would like to live there. Guess that door is now closed given the cost of housing there now. My brother moved from Nashville to Portland, OR a few years ago, and was astonished at the housing prices there. He ended up buying a house that would have been much less expensive in Nashville.

With regard to the rationing, my mother's parents had a small dairy farm, so they had ample supplies of milk, and butter (they churned it), and my grandfather would hunt for rabbit and squirrels. They also had chickens for eggs, and my grandmother was a champion chicken and dumplings maker. My mother did talk about gasoline and sugar being rationed, and I have the wartime edition of The American Woman's Cookbook which has recipes modified for using less sugar. -
I will miss this show, but I thought the way the writers handled the end of the series was perfect. Her character looked so much younger and happier in he final scene, and the dog was a great addition. Maybe Vera will become friends with the man who is now a games keeper. I believe he was a childhood acquaintance. I realized after the show ended, that the final scene was shot on a sunny day. Most of the outdoor scenes in the series were always on gloomy, cold days which set a tone for the show.

I liked Drew's story of how he was recognized at the gym by the older members.

The Texas to the Smoky Mountains episode was new to me, and to my DVR evidently. I was so distracted by the beard on the husband, that I had a hard time focusing on the houses they toured. His beard qualified for its own zip code.

The HH episode last night about the couple buying a "full time" house in Cameron Parish Louisiana was a repackaged vacation/beach house episode. There is no way those people are living full time in that area with a child in high school. I live in Louisiana, and Cameron Parish has been hit hard by several hurricanes over the past few years. There is a reason that some scenes showed large areas of vacant land. It's because the houses that used to be there were destroyed by storm surge and wind. Insurance costs have risen dramatically, so they are paying a pretty penny for that, if they have it. You are usually required to carry insurance if you have a mortgage. Oh, and the little scene that referenced the dirt and sand that had washed into the driveway of one of the houses they viewed, and the realtor brushed it off as a usual event after a storm, made me laugh. If that's the result of a summer thunder storm, they need to think many times about what it will look like with a Cat 2 or 3 or higher hits that area. I heard the daughter say it doesn't look like Austin, and I bet they live in Austin and have a nice, big house there on a permanent basis. One more little annoying thing, the husband kept talking about his ocean view - it's the Gulf of Mexico, not an ocean, so it's a Gulf view. I know of no one who lives here who declares it an ocean view. If you did, people would think you were talking about the Atlantic or Pacific.

I'm enjoying this show immensely, and hope it continues to do well in the ratings so it can stay around for a long time. I also liked "So Help Me Todd", but evidently the powers that be thought it wasn't worth continuing. With Elsbeth, I sit back and suspend reality for an hour and just enjoy her quirkiness, her wardrobe, and all of the supporting cast. I don't care if the courtroom stuff was totally a farce, or any of the other things that would not ordinarily happen in the real world. This show isn't the real world, but it sure is helping me forget about the real world for an hour or so each week.

Holiday Baking Championship - General Discussion

A couple of seasons ago, one of the contestants was on a weekly radio show in her hometown, and she talked about her experience on the show. She did give some more detailed info about behind the scenes stuff that I didn't know, and that the viewers don't see happening. She did not win, but managed to stay on for 5 or 6 episodes. I cannot remember how I stumbled upon the radio show, but if you Google enough correct key words you might be able to find it. EDITED to add this: I dug back into my comments and found a link to the radio interview the contestant gave to a Natchez radio station if anyone is interested - https://listenupyall.com/2023/05/10/31593/ -
Washington to Libertyville, Illinois - I got so tired of listening to the husband talk about how he wanted to be able to walk to get coffee. The man must have a coffee habit. Also, if you concerned about budget, coffee shop coffee isn't cheap. The wife was the practical one regarding $$, pointing out that college tuition would be looming in the coming years. The house they chose was the most practical for them, and I hope her parents can continue to climb the stairs from their basement apartment for many years to come.

Same here. For 2 weeks in a row, my cat has been curled up in my lap sleeping, and the minute Jer began her cat imitation, my kitty bolted out of the room. I guess that means her imitation is a good one, but I do wish she would stop. -
Watched the first episode tonight. Wow! I wish I didn't have to wait a week for the 2nd one.

I was surprised to find 30+ recordings of HH on my DVR last night. I couldn't tell if they were new or old, so I watched a few. I think the ones I watched were new, at least new to me. One was a couple looking for a bigger house for their 2 boys to grow up in. The dad was a firefighter, and I don't remember what the wife did. She described herself as a helicopter mom, and the husband was the sane one who wanted the kids to have some freedom to be kids (they were 3 & 5). She was annoying as hell, and she had spent way too much time in a tanning bed or applying orange tanning cream. That and the stiletto heels she wore with jeans and shorts made for an interesting fashion combo. Oh, she liked to shop too, and didn't want the price of the house to interfere with her shopping budget. These are the people whose retirement savings I want to see. I liked the husband's down to earth thinking. It must get tiresome living with someone like her 24/7, but they've been together 10 years, so he must not mind too much.

Carl needs to get over Cassandra and move on. Even if she decides to try to get back together with him, he needs to realize she's always going to be unhappy with his job, and freak out every time something goes awry. Let her go find some professor with a safe job to keep her happy. Carl deserves better.

I'm embarrassed to say that I did not guess the answer. I live 80 miles from New Orleans, Louisiana, and All Saints Day is a big religious day here because of the large Catholic population in the state. I'm a Saints fan too - even when they lose. I was kicking myself when I saw the answer.

I'm glad you asked that question. During COVID I developed a bad case of eczema on my hands because of over use of hand sanitizer. It strips your skin of valuable moisture. I had to use nitrile gloves for just about everything, and had to take Dupixent injections for a year. I still use the gloves once in a while when I have an eczema flare on my hands. I'm in my 70's and the dermatologist told me that the combo of age and hand sanitizer were the triggers. As you age your skin needs more moisture. i never use hand sanitizer now, and have found a wonderful soap replacement that is unscented, and leaves your skin feeling soft. It's Amish Farm Soap and can be ordered on online.- 2.4k replies

If you live near a Trader Joe's they have one during the summer months that is very good, IMO. Bakers/cooks who make them at home may not agree, but I think it's a good substitute for home made.
