  1. Aren't (isn't?) 28-30 days about all most insurance plans will pay for rehab (or even mental health issues)? You have to continue to do the work when released, but I think a month in-patient is about all you get most of the time.
  2. Something just dawned on me. When I was considering WLS, there was a mandatory meeting with a therapist. I changed my mind before going, but my understanding from the clinic and from people here and a WLS FB page I was on, is that the therapist is only trying to determine if you have an eating disorder or would otherwise be unable to follow the post surgery meal plan. S/he is not trying to find out why you eat, if your mother beat you as a child, etc. So, maybe what we are seeing is something different from what regular overweight patients get and is an effort to get at the deeper psychological issues that not only cause someone to overeat, but even to sabotage themselves after the surgery.
  3. I used to live in Philly, where they have food vendors on the streets. I would eat breakfast at home, come into town - maybe no more than 20 minutes - and when I came up the subway stairs and smelled the sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiches, it was like I hadn't eaten at all. I'm not gonna lie, more than once I got back to my desk and realized I had bought a sandwich. Or, I would start going up to the vendor when it would dawn on me that I had already eaten and didn't need more and had to make myself turn away. I can't say I craved this stuff, I never had a sandwich like it before I saw them on the street, and I didn't make them at home. But there was something about the smell and the memory of how good they tasted that I would just go into a daze. It's the only food I can think of in my life that I created that reaction in me. I've seen Secret Eaters and yeah, I think a lot of them are just not paying attention to what they eat (like working out and then going to the pub, please), but sometimes I think people just go on automatic pilot and really don't realize what's going on. It's kinda scary. Thank goodness I wasn't that way about a lot of foods.
  4. You know, if the show spread out people's food for 5 days, maybe some of them would be shocked into being more compliant with Dr Now's diet. It's easy to say, "I don't eat that much" when you're not keeping a food diary and not really paying attention. I don't think it would be enough for most of them not to have the surgery, but seeing what they really eat might wake some of them up. I think Supersize vs Superskinny stopped showing the food shoot. There were a lot of SJWs online complaining about wasting food.... I thought it was a great visual tool for both participants.
  5. So she wound up around 380 or so ? Aren't there people going to work everyday who weigh that? Why can't she get up and start walking? 'Cause she doesn't want to. She can lay in bed, get up when she wants, have people chauffeur her to the store, make meals, etc. I wouldn't get out of the chair, either. We all do what gets us what we want. She wants exactly what she's got.
  6. Ah, there's your excuse - they are pushing you to change, get up, and get a job. You're like a 14 yr old - your parents tell you to do something and you dig in and say 'no.' You'll show them. Jeez - and people wondered why the sister was a bitch. I think we're seeing why.
  7. I used to follow a woman on YT who went to Mexico for WLS. She had nothing but complications for maybe 18-24 months after the surgery. It was sad to watch her be in the hospital so much. She ended up dying.
  8. Michigander by marriage and education here. We've got relatives in the UP who would laugh at the 6-8" we're about to get down here in Iowa.
  9. "How about your enabling parents?" hahahaha I think Dr Now is getting sassier with age.
  10. Applicants probably don't know how people are chosen for the show. The producers could easily say something like - "We're considering you and want to do some videos of you at home to show the doctor." Of course, I don't know if I would do a shower video on the off chance of being selected, but I'm not 600 lbs and in need of surgery, either.
  11. Darned VPN! And university ITS isn't much help either. : ( I'm back - and fascinated why what's her name doesn't have foot rests on the wheel chair. Isn't that usual? Also - who knew you could store snacks in the recliner? Doesn't anyone clean behind the cushions in her house?
  12. We've got a storm coming thru tomorrow afternoon and into Friday. I'm gonna leave early; forecast is for 6-8". Nope, not gonna do it.
  13. OMGoodness. Pineapple nectar! The diabetic in me is just screaming, "NOOOOO!" That's just straight up sugar.
  14. I forgot - I couldn't sit or stand for long periods and had no idea what was wrong. When I went for the 6 week exam, I mentioned this. Doc said, "Oh yeah, the baby broke your coccyx. Nothing we can do. It will heal on its own."
  15. How y'all doin'? I may have picked the wrong time to try to connect to my workplace VPN...
  16. Yeah, Sean knitted. They also had church members come and help them move, so even in what looked like an isolated existence, they had a church network to lean on. Poor Liz wound up with only her sick mother to help. I also agree about the sterile-looking apartment. The apartment, Liz's demeanor - both seemed devoid of life.
  17. Yup. That's why I don't pay attention to addicts who say they want to be counselors. Be clean for a few years first and then you can start to think about it.
  18. I grew up in DC, kinda the South, but not really. I put hot sauce on almost everything, just because, well - hot sauce. One of my sisters told me she went to lunch with a friend who pulled out a little bottle of Louisiana Hot Sauce from her purse. As my sister commented, "You know you black when you carry your own hot sauce."
  19. I love pigs. I don't eat pork, I post pictures on my FB of little piggies getting their heads slammed against cement floors to encourage other people not to eat pork, I have a pinterest page of little cute piggies, and I would love to have a little pig. BUT, they get bigger. You have to be committed to having a mature pig, not just the cute little piggie. That's why thinking adults don't buy pets that they won't keep for the long haul, even after said pet gets past the cute stage and become a bit much to handle (that's why we have always had rabbits. Rabbits don't go bad on you.) These folks got a little pig and were lied to by the seller. Esther got big but her dads kept her because they made that commitment to her. Look for her videos on YT to see what it's like to have a 600 lb pig have the run of your house. As usual, Whit, you're a thoughtless child - actually, you give children a bad name.
  20. So the big girl is in the pool where size doesn't matter. Wake me when she runs that 5K.
  21. 2 days in labor. Back labor. 10 lb baby. Shut the eff up, Twit.
  22. I've been taking insulin for maybe 12-13 years, mostly because I could not deal with metformin, which made me so sick all the time, I decided I'd rather shoot up. At first, I tried several different types of insulin (different types last different amounts of time) and I took a lot. As I began to understand more about eating and how to reduce my insulin, I now take a long lasting one at night that 'covers' me during the day and short lasting insulin at meal time - if I need it. Many days I don't have to take any insulin at all, other than the one at night. As far as I know, from personal experience and from knowing a bunch of diabetics, including Type 1s, insulin doesn't affect your behavior. Lack of, or too much, can affect you medically, but that's an event that needs immediate attention, not something long term where you could point and say, "She takes a lot of insulin, no wonder she's nuts." All of that said, and especially for women, hormones can do all kinds of things to people and their behavior. I'd look at hormones before I looked at insulin. Also, for some reason, we often find it hard to believe that some people are just contrary bastards who are difficult to deal with or who make bad choices. I'm all for laying behaviors at the feet of the behaving person. It's usually their choice. Penny makes wontons and won't get out of bed because that's what she wants, not because she's on insulin.
  23. Jon Scallion, from the season with Ja'Nel, worked for GR in Las Vegas. If you recall, when he told him he didn't make the finals, GR also told him that things turn up all the time. I think Jon was with GR for a few years. In a way, he was a winner since he got what they all want - a chance to work for GR (OK, they want the money, too).
  24. I could not get past the gum chewing. My big question is - yeah, we knew the awards thing was just a set up for a cook off, but Michele had on dressy shoes. Did someone bring her some sneakers? : ) Elise - you are a terrible person. Classless, graceless, and without a drop of concern for your team or your fellow humans. The sooner you fade into the woodwork, never to be heard from again, the better off we will all be. I can't imagine working with her or for her. Every time I see her, I think of the saying, "Blowing out someone else's candle won't make yours shine brighter."
  25. Maybe the nurse has a different perspective, but I was a young adult in the 1970's. I knew a number of people who used heroin (including someone very close to me). I knew people who used cocaine. The highs are different. Heroin addicts slow down and nod out. Cocaine users are all up and about. If you are attracted to one way of being 'out there,' my personal experience is I don't see where the other way would be appealing.
