  1. Based on what was said in the last episode, it sounds like Kayla's goal is to own her own studio/company. I really hope she's planning to at least go to a local school and get some business training (and a dance major would be good, too, because she doesn't have strong dance technique overall). I have this suspicion that next year we'll see Kayla coaching BDD as an employee. As to why Traci (Miami coach) keeps showing up-there's one reason only. The show wants her there. No one flies from Miami to Jackson just to watch a competition between a half dozen local/regional teams in a school gym.
  2. For dance (and, for that matter, sports coaching) it's often "those who cannot do what they used to be able to do, teach"-because so many retire from actively performing/competing to teaching after suffering injury (or just getting old enough that the joints won't handle what they used to handle). Or just choosing to stay in one place and have a stable lifestyle. It's hard to have a family and be a professional performer, especially for a woman. The big difference between the instructor on Dance Mums UK and Abby is that the UK instructor DOES have that professional performing and dance experience.
  3. Does anyone know if these are available online anywhere? I can't watch as they air (at the dance studio with my daughter), and apparently Comcast doesn't have them available on-demand like they did for the regular series.
  4. It seemed like the tiger Cubs did less dance and more drama/skit type stuff, which doesn't seem like it should win a dance competition. I don't think hand-jives sitting in the floor and tearing up a baby doll counts.
  5. New Mexico is one of the few states I've lived in where Jimmy finishing a BS at a community college is very possible, because Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico University are both actually systems, similar to the SUNY system of New York, and while there are many, many 2 year campuses that have extremely low admissions standards and cater towards non-traditional adult students, military personnel (quite a few are located on military bases), vocational students, and high school students picking up a college class or two via DE, they do usually have a route by which you can get a popular 4 year degree or two on campus. In the late 1980s/early 1990s, this was usually done by a class taught on the main campus (which offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees) actually being broadcast to a classroom on a 2 year campus with someone there in the room to manage the audio feed and relay questions to the instructor, proctor tests, take up assignments, etc.
  6. I can understand Chuck wanting Jimmy to prove himself-but to knock down his brother this way, take away his biggest accomplishment just when he's really found something that works for him-Jimmy is GOOD with his elderly clients and picked up on something that had been missed. It could have been handled better. I know Jimmy becomes Saul and a truly "criminal lawyer", but some part of me wants to see him in his nice little strip mall office with Kim as his partner, doing elder law with HHM referring the $150 price point for a will clients to him because they're too small potatoes. And I think if Chuck had suggested that Jimmy isn't ready for HHM, but that Jimmy take the money from this case and use it to build up his elder law practice, that HHM will refer cases to him as appropriate, and that he can build up his reputation, Jimmy would have taken that. Because Jimmy, more than anything else, wanted his big brother to be proud of him. It wouldn't be good TV, but it would be a much nicer outcome for someone who may not always do the right thing, but is truly a nice guy. Mike, too-I want to see him doing legitimate PI work and enjoying his granddaughter not getting pulled into Gus Fring and drug deals out of guilt, manipulated by his daughter in law. He's a good guy who's done bad things, not a bad guy. And Pryce, you've made one deal and came out of it whole largely due to Mike's background research. Run for the hills and have a nice life as a pharmacy technician or vet tech or whatever you are. Basically, I want the show to end it's first season with all the characters living happily ever after. Except then I won't have a show to watch.
  7. Overall, not horrible. I would have changed a few things, mostly in the "Dreams come true". The biggest is that the time jump was too small. It would have been much more viable had it been at least 10 years. Other things. in the Harvey Milk scene, have one of the little kids, maybe the one next to Blaine on the Piano, give one of the guys a hug and say "Hi, dad!". If Rachel is pregnant for the Tony Awards, have it be her child with Jesse. Make "Don't Stop Believin'" the final song, showing one of the earlier clips, maybe from the first sectionals, and then segueing into the entire cast in a reprise. Do pop-overs for other characters who had long-time runs as to "What are they doing now", including Britney/Santana, Quinn, Puck, Figgins, Bieste, etc. And have one of those pop overs be Sam next to a young woman with a statement "Sam still volunteers with the New Directions, but is pursuing his degree in X at Lima University. The new vocal director at McKinley is Beth, (adoptive daughter of Shelby, daughter of Puck and Quinn), who got her music education and vocal performance degrees at NYU. I can dream.... But, overall, it felt like a fitting series finale. Despite the mess this show became, I'm going to miss these kids.
  8. Is it at all surprising that when you have teen girls doing unfamiliar tumbling on a hard floor, someone gets hurt?
  9. I wonder why the UK show is using recognizable music, when the r US show uses suspiciously similar substitutes? Copyright is international, isn't it? I like Jen better than Abby, but the moms make up for it, and I have no clue what the girls are like, or even how to tell them apart. I suspect this will be like the Miami version.
  10. In the real, non-Glee world, Health and Physical education absolutely is a college concentration and/or major depending on which state you're in, and if you're teaching classes as more than a substitute, you have to be highly qualified, which requires X college credit hours in the field (basically at least a minor or concentration). Otherwise, it counts against the district, and federal funds can be affected. In many states, it can also lead to state takeover in this post NCLB era. Sam substituting for Bieste for a few weeks (since apparently in this Glee-World surgical transitioning is a snap of the fingers process), fine, but he can't be hired full-time as a permanent part of the faculty as a teacher. And the alternative certification, pick up just a few courses to get a license requires a bachelor's degree (usually in the field you're going to be teaching in, or at least something where you have enough content hours in the field you're teaching to hit that magic X-for example, someone with a degree in accounting probably is pretty close to what it takes to teach high school math). There are also a lot of college athletes who pick up the bare bones basics to get a minor in some academic field along with teaching credentials with the expectation that they'll coach. My high school had a biology teacher and two history teachers who were hired primarily to coach football (plus the PE teacher, who was hired to coach basketball), and an accounting teacher hired to coach baseball. All of them except for the PE teacher were marginal teachers in their academic field at best. I'm sure there are schools that hire outside coaches as well. In my area, that happens most with cheer and dance team, where a faculty adviser is appointed, but the actual coaching is done by someone outside the school who is paid by the "booster club" (which means that parents write checks so their child can be on the team).
  11. One other thing that bugged me-I'd assumed the stand battle was the captains picking which dance to do next based on what the other team picked, from a set of several (which was one reason why it was so hard to make stands compared to the other team dances). But you can't just wish pointe shoes on your feet, so they not only had to know that was coming, but have time to get them on.
  12. My DD was glad to see a math geek win it. I was rooting for Ben once Kaitlin was out, simply because he ended up abandoned by his so-called "Alliance". And Kaitlin, you work for NASA. You should have at least been able to take a reasonable guess on that question!
  13. Um,,,,(hides head)...I kind of liked it?? The plot was thin and pretty silly, but seeing Sue finally get called on the carpet was good (although I wish Will hadn't spoken up for her, I can understand Bieste doing so). I'm glad it was Becky who finally said "too much" (although I don't know why she'd care who is in Glee club). And Jane finally got a chance to sing and take the lead. Sue and Vocal Adrenaline makes sense in as much as anything on this show does. Rachel getting a musical job AND back into NYADA was too much, and I'm going to pretend it didn't happen. I also admit, the musician in me was trying to figure out how best to orchestrate for a group containing a large number of male singers, three female singers, and one unchanged treble. I'd kind of like to see them do Pie Jesu from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Requiem.
  14. I do like that in this season, 3/4 of the finalists are actually academic nerds, nOT pop-culture ones. It seems like the academic nerds tended to get gunned for and eliminated early in past seasons. I guess that was the one benefit of the secret 6-it's like the other nerds forgot that mathematician Jonathan and Biologist Ben were PhD's until this episode. And I was cringing at Amanda. Sulfate? really?? Colby would have SO killed that challenge!!
  15. I'm guessing that's exactly what the Miami school is. There's a Memphis school that I'd kind of like to see on Bring It!, except that I don't know if they do competitions at all-they teach the RAD syllabus, but also have classes in African Dance, Hip-hop, etc.
  16. Pairing Kitty with Myron looks like she's his babysitter. Or maybe a young mom.
  17. I don't even know if I want to watch the last two episodes of this season. The whole secret six, alliances, and voting off the unwanted (not the threatening-I saw who they targeted, and it was definitely the most "nerdy" of the nerds) is totally opposed to everything that makes Revenge of the Nerds one of my top "Bad day" pick me up movies. It was just so middle school and mean-girl. I guess I'll cheer for Kaitlin because she's the "Colby" of her team and if team Hoovooloo had lost the last few nerd wars, she'd have been the one with the target on her back. At the same time, I loved the forensic science challenge because it's a true science challenge, and the marine biologist finally got a chance to shine (and I can well believe that he's very experienced at reading DNA-that's a BIG part of biology now).
  18. I'll forgive the show a lot if the final episode has Kurt and Blaine signing divorce papers when they wake up and realize that, yeah, this was a mistake. Or maybe getting an annulment. Mike Chang FTW. Also, Tina wants to be a vet, right? She probably won't even be through school and established in her practice by 30. That's really not an "old maid" age when you're going for the letters Dr. in front of your name!
  19. I'm assuming that Star and Sky (who look older than Sunjai) are being brought in so if there's a new season, it's not an abrupt shift.
  20. At this point, I'm #TeamColby. I think the others dismissed him as being "just a trivia buff" and not a true nerd (and that happens a lot when you go into teaching-the assumption is that you're not good enough to do something else, not that it's something that you truly enjoy). I'm hoping he sticks through to the end-as the alliance crumbles.
  21. My guess is that Kendall and Nia have both had some formal voice training, and the result was hat even though, vocally, they were better than Mackenzie, they almost sounded too formal/polished (since MattyB is, like MackZ, a cute, not particularly talented and pretty much untrained except in how to look cute, singer). Speech impediments are often not carried over into singing, and, in fact, learning how to sing can help train the mouth what to do so it becomes more conscious. But I do have to say it's obvious that Abby's original girls actually have spent some time on singing, while the new girls haven't.
  22. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-kleeman/reality-risk-reward-is-us_b_6671542.html I don't think this one has been posted yet.
  23. Seriously, corn snakes, ball pythons, garter snakes, and green snakes (couldn't tell if they were rough or smooth green snakes) and Ori was scared of them? I wish they'd stop the "Snakes are scary" stuff on TV shows! (I know it fits in with Indiana Jones, but ugh!). I was glad to see Colby win just because he didn't stop at the snakes.
  24. I liked the rap better-probably because I'm not a pop culture nerd at all. And I have to say, I wouldn't mind getting a copy of both for my 10 yr old's ipod.
  25. Ok, it's not a romantic chemistry, but I'm pretty convinced the best couple on this trainwrck of a show is Unique and Sheldon-probably because Dot is playing the heck out of the role, and Alex is being herself. And, of course, we'll probably never see them together again since the Very Special Episode fragment is over.
