S10.E22: Reunion Part 3
candle96 replied to OnceSane's topic in The Real Housewives Of New York City
Carole used Tinsley this season to have an ally and possibly get back at Bethenny. It would not surprise me in the least if Bethenny ended up trying to get close to Tinsley to take her away from Carole, especially since poor Tins was just rejected on national television as someone Carole merely "likes." ETA: okay, so Bethenny getting closer to Tinsley would probably make more sense if Carole was coming back. But I can still see her trying to form that alliance for next season. -
On another forum someone likened this show to the crime/military procedurals they show on CBS, with a bit more nudity and F-bombs. I watched the last 4 episodes with that analogy in my head, and agreed. Fine, good enough, entertaining, but nothing that really sticks with you. And the plots tend to wrap up a little too neatly. Not a single word about what happened to the doctors from other countries with ebola? It was more than just the one guy who contracted it. Hundreds of people could've been exposed, depending on how many flights were taken to get everyone home. I too was the most emotionally invested in Hanin, and I actually even liked how they sort of showed how Suleiman got to be the way he was. Given his background, education and intelligence, I think he could've continued to be a compelling villain for the next season. On the other hand, I would be fine with this show getting entirely off the Muslim extremists as bad guys train. A little too predictable. I guess with them going to Moscow, it's likely the Russians will be the big bad for season 2.

They didn't go swimming at the pool. They went there so that Amma could kill Mae, I guess because she assumed it would be empty. That's what was in the end credits, quick flashes of Amma murdering each girl, the first two with the help of her fellow roller skaters. Amma was jealous that Mae was getting attention from Camille, saying she wanted to be a journalist like her. Amma used the girls' teeth make the floor of Adora's room in the dollhouse (similar to the elephant ivory in the real thing), which is what Camille discovers at the end, right before Amma says, "don't tell Mama."

Especially stupid considering how much money he has. It's not like they're negotiating over a few thousand here. Shannon could really take him to the cleaners if he insists on representing himself. For Shannon's sake, I hope he does continue in this stupidity. My fear is that he'll soon get (if he hasn't already) a super vicious attorney who'll drag it out.

Ha! I'm also a Chicago to California to Chicago person (although in my case it was L.A.). A good chunk of my heart will always be out there, but it was too hard to be so far from family, plus the cost of living. . . maybe some day if I'm rich. The thing that I don't get about the situation with Gina. It sounds like they were brand new to the O.C. when her husband got this job in northern L.A. Why not just move the whole family up there? It's not like they had long-established roots in the O.C. Northern L.A. might not be as glamorous as the O.C. (??), but L.A. proper and nearby areas certainly are. Perhaps the husband squashed that idea for nefarious reasons.

I think this show would've benefited from being set at an earlier time, as your insightful post points out how some elements strain credibility. My nitpick is when the detective was talking to the disgraced nurse about her time at the hospital and she said something like, "we didn't keep records back then," as if back then was 80 years ago. It was at most 25 years ago that Marian died, maybe 20. It's 2018! I just chuckled because I've been working at hospitals for almost 20 years, and we most certainly kept good records "back then," as is required. We even had email and cell phones 20 years ago!

Yep. In that scene on the stairs, Camille is in her cheerleading uniform, I believe. Plus last week, when she was talking to those boys in the car, one of them mentioned his mom was 34 and Camille said that she must've been before her (Camille's) time. I'm okay with AA's casting. After all, Camille is an alcoholic, which tends to age people. Not that I think Amy Adams looks "aged." She and I are the same age - I wish I looked as young as her! Yep. I genuinely laughed at your post, but I think the point is that these women use Beaches as an excuse to cry about the misery in their own lives. Gossip of one woman possibly leaving her husband, another's husband not wanting another child, etc. Plus throw in their Stepword-wife quality, and that awful talk about motherhood (trying to convince themselves they're better) I think they don't allow themselves to show much real emotion about real stuff elsewhere in their lives. In other words, they're not really any happier than Camille, they just express it much differently. Oh, and put me down for losing it every single time Sally Field has her big freakout post-funeral in Steel Magnolias. Not a movie I watch regularly, per se, but have seen at least 5 or 6 times.

S10.E16: Guess Who's Arguing at Dinner?

Because they're on a reality show. :) Need to save them for at least the reunion. -
S13.E02: One Apology, Another Betrayal

My favorite part of about that was Vicki leaving Tamra and Eddie saying, "I have to go sell insurance. . . " and then we see her getting in the car asking Kelly if she wants to hang out and get something to eat. Vicki WORKS, don't you know? I don't mind Emily so far, but she seems to have juvadermed her eyes into nonexistence. -
I get that all these girls, past and present, are supposed to remind Camille of each other, but it would be helpful if at least ONE of them was cast as a brunette, or some other distinguishing feature. All these blonde girls are mixing together. But maybe it doesn't matter, as Camille is seeing them all as one?

Oh wow, this looks so much better here than on television. I think the problem with some of these reunions looks (thinking of a lot of the Ho'Wives) is that they look great when they're standing up, not so much sitting down on a couch. Kathryn's dress and the low-cut nature of it just doesn't work when she's sitting down. There's something so harsh about the way Kathryn does her makeup and hair. She's naturally pretty, but just overdoes it. I think this dress would look much better with softer, more natural hair. And the earrings were awful, very Golden Girls. The look all together aged her about 20 years. At least she's back to the red hair, though.

I've somewhat defeatedly taken to putting on the closed captioning sometimes, as I did with this show last night. Part of it is my very loud furnace/air conditioner, but part of it is definitely the tendency of shows to allow so much mumbling from their actors in their final edits. Looking at you, Patrick Dempsey.

She went from a unique look to one that is very generic, in my opinion. She is obviously beautiful, and I thought her old nose made her stand out a bit more. But I went to college in the south with a bunch of people like these folks (oh, the time wasted on Shep-like guys, who never gave me the time of day), and I know the pressure to look a certain way is real.

IIRC, she didn't work out until recently. There was an episode a few seasons back where they showed her deciding to start working out. Gym rat or not, Cameran is naturally thin. Some folks are just blessed with good genes.

Yeah, this is was my suspicion about all of their money. Had to be some drug trade in the mix somewhere. You can't build a city on donations and selling beads and books alone. Bagwhan was so clearly a charlatan to me. Sheela may have been the operator, but there's no way he didn't know what she was up to. I would love to know what he was actually doing all those years he was "silent." I found myself reacting to Sheela with such an odd mix of being charmed and disturbed at the same time. In a way, I almost admired her gutsiness and openness about everything, like right at the beginning she admits, "I'm not really into that meditation stuff." For her, it was all about the power and the relationship with Baghwan. In another life, she would've made an excellent politician or woman behind the politician. Not to say that I didn't also find her terrifying and awful. I'm not convinced SHE didn't arrange for that bombing at their hotel as an excuse to get a bunch of weapons and go on the attack. As someone who has worked with mentally ill and homeless people, I called them having problems with that population the second they brought them to the commune. Many homeless are mentally ill and need significant medical and professional intervention. And then I was horrified at the way they were treated. Whatever "enlightenment" those in the interviews still seemed to have, they certainly glossed over that episode of abject cruelty. Really disgusting. I though it interesting that of all the tiny little towns that the Rajneesh could've picked, they ended up near the one where the founder of Nike and his family lived. You have to wonder how much his influence brought the attention of the higher level and federal authorities in a much faster manner. I did have a smidge of sympathy for the townspeople, despite their bigotry. I liked the guy in the overalls, who seemed smarter than he looked, and seemed more semi-amused by the whole thing more than angry.

And doesn't like "game meat," which I'm pretty sure does not include duck. Based on the intel here, I just went to her FB page. She actually went to culinary school!! WTF?

S10.E11: Faux Weddings and a Funeral
candle96 replied to OnceSane's topic in The Real Housewives Of New York City
Yeah, the camera work in that scene was weird. They kept cutting to shots of just the not-Kevin-driver, seemingly for no reason. He didn't say anything, Bethenny didn't really interact with him. Did one of the producers think he was cute? I was wondering if he later spilled some dirt he heard in that ride. -

As someone who works in medicine, I can attest a shockingly large number of doctors' offices and hospitals still use faxes. Even with non-confidential information, I'll offer to email it, and quite a few prefer that I fax it over. It drives me crazy, but it's a reality. -

That and the wedding dress shopping were 2 of the more disgusting scenes I've seen on this show, and that's saying something. What an embarrassment to my entire gender, traipsing in every bad stereotype of women. Run Scott, run! -
S10.E10: You Broke the Penal Code
candle96 replied to OnceSane's topic in The Real Housewives Of New York City
I think Carole noticed, but she didn't care because she and her Bethenny were there own little clique. She was fine with Bethenny being mean if it wasn't turned on her or served some purpose for Carole to remain "above" the other ladies. If anything, I think Carole knew about it to use it to her advantage. The problem with the type of friend like Bethenny is that they always turn their meanness towards you eventually. I figured that out in high school, not sure why it's taken Carole so long. FTR, I'm a huge Bethenny fan, think her hostility comes from a lot of personal damage and wanting to avoid being hurt, but I would never want to be friends with her in real life. It would be exhausting. -

In what was I guess supposed to be a big scene between her and Bethenny, all I could concentrate on was how swollen Carole's face looked. It was even more obvious when they would cut to talking heads and it looked more normal. Back away from the filler, Carole. -
I thought Paige going there was kind of perfect because it showed that 1. she's still kind of stupid and 2. she ultimately liked the "idea" of Russia more than actually living there. Her home life with her parents was sort of lacking and her time with Claudia and Elizabeth (however manipulative it was) felt like a real family to her. Her own little fake version of "Russia." But actually going to live in Communist Soviet Union? Paige couldn't handle that, so she went to the only place that felt like home to her.

I partially agree with this, but am also remembering that Stan has been shown to be a little less than black and white law abiding man since the beginning, with all the Nina hijinks. And I think their pleas about Henry got to him. HIs own son doesn't seem to care about him that much, and they've built the Stan-Henry relationship for awhile. So perhaps they were planting seeds this whole time that Stan would ultimately let the Jennings go. Still not sure it's realistic, though.

S08.E20: Reunion Part 2
candle96 replied to KungFuBunny's topic in The Real Housewives Of Beverly Hills
I've always wondered how much Mikey makes. $75,000? $100,000? I hope she's paying him enough to be at her beck and call at all times. I don't doubt that losing all that stuff, particularly her mother's, would be traumatic. I have a close friend who had a totally destructive house fire and lost close to everything. It is absolutely a trauma. There is another side to it, though. There was grief, but there was also the fun of getting to buy new stuff, once the insurance payment came through. Maybe Kyle has comforted herself with a little retail therapy.
