  1. Not sure about this. I'm willing to give him he benefit of the doubt, but I think Black would have been the better choice because of his pitching experience. I just hope they get really good hitting and pitching coaches. It seemed like when they were pitching well, they couldn't hit anything and when they hit well the pitchers forgot how to throw the ball.
  2. In our area of Virginia, the law is that kids 12 and under can trick or treat. If you're older, you could possibly get ticketed for trick or treating. I honestly don't know how much they enforce the law since I see quite a few trick or treaters around. My son is 12 years old and he lost interest in trick or treating about two years ago. He's a bit on the shy side and doesn't care for the spooky houses. He does like handing out candy (although I think he also samples quite a few pieces in between LOL). I've noticed that a lot of people are decorating their yards like it is Christmas. More Halloween lights, inflatables, and tombstones, etc. in the yards. I told my son that if I found a Snoopy and/or Minion Halloween inflatable next year, I would pick it up for our front yard :-)
  3. Yeah, and the Nationals are going to choke in the first round of the playoffs.
  4. I wouldn't be surprised if Jill is pregnant by the end of the year. Considering how much they share pictures of Izzy, I can't help but wonder how they would "market" a Dillard girl child. The Duggar girls are fairly attractive and a Dillard girl would most likely have Derrick's height. I wonder if a Dillard girl would be "sweet" like the other Duggar girls or if they would try to make her somewhat of a "fundy supermodel". I wonder if they would try to make a Dillard girl "happen" similar to what they did with the daughter on Duck Dynasty.
  5. We live in a neighborhood in the suburbs with about 800 houses. I noticed a lot more cars parked on the street than usual. I think a lot of people park and trick or treat in our neighborhood because there are so many houses. We didn't get any religious items in his bucket. I noticed that more and more people are handing out the "good" candy instead of the cheap stuff. I'm guessing it helps that Target, Walmart, and every other store sells giant bags of Hershey, Nestle, and other name brand candies and less of the cheaper candies (I remember getting tons of Mary Janes in my bucket each year). I'm sitting here watching Where the Heart Is. It stars Natalie Portman as a pregnant woman who ends up living inside a Walmart for about a month. One of the characters, played by Stockard Channing, reminds me of Michelle Duggar in appearance. The character was very religious, but every day would pray for God's forgiveness for fornicating with a man who was not her husband (and mentioned the kitchen table once).
  6. I just didn't care for this episode. I'm not familiar with the Brave movie, so I could care less about Merida. The only thing worth watching was Emma and Merlin and the final scenes when Henry contacted Merlin.
  7. Hope everyone had a great Halloween. We had a great time. I think my boys enjoy handing out candy more than trick or treating. I saw a bunch of pictures of kids and babies in costumes on my FB thread for the past two days. I couldn't help but think about the Duggar kids. This would be the perfect holiday for them. They would get to dress up (I'm sure Jessa or Jill would love to share pictures of their babies in costumes on social media) and with all of those kids, they'd get a boatload of candy from trick or treating. The grifters they are, this holiday was made for them.
  8. I can't stand that Peter Pan commercial. I know they're trying to be funny, but Peter Pan is just coming off as a little asshole. I just want someone to slap the snot out of him. We have a local car dealership called Priority here in Virginia. They have a bunch of incentives where if you purchase a vehicle from them, you get free manicures on specific days, free car washes, etc. They've had annoying commercials for years, but now they have a commercial where a man has surprised his wife with a new vehicle. She gets upset that she hasn't purchased it at Priority because now she can't get the free manicures, car washes, etc. Totally ungrateful.
  9. The hubby and I are just not feeling the World Series this year. We've watched previous years, but this year, when we have the game on, it's just background noise. Outside of the Nationals games on MASN, we really don't follow the other teams (although my dad will let me know how the Cardinals are doing since he's been a Cardinals fan since he was a kid). We've watched a few innings of the games, but usually find something else to watch once the Dh starts channel surfing during commercials. I'm somewhat curious about the Mets next season. I'm wondering if they will continue to play well or if it is a thing where their pitchers were somewhat unknown this year and next year other teams will know how to hit off of them since they've seen them for the past year. If we're lucky, maybe SI can proclaim them most likely to win the World Series next year and jinx their season like they did the Nationals this year.
  10. That's the same reason we change the subject whenever it is suggested that we go to Disney with extended family. We have tween boys; everyone else has preschool aged girls.
  11. Hubby is military, so the only cruises he goes on are aboard Navy ships. He has mentioned European cruises many many years in the future when the boys are grown and on their own. The Disney cruises look like fun, but I can't see him agreeing to a cruise for a vacation at this point in our lives.
  12. I didn't even think about her father and his father being brothers. They made so much emphasis about the father regarding Superman and so much about the mother in this version, that I automatically assumed that her mother was connected to one of his parents somehow.
  13. I thought it was interesting. I'm assuming that even though there was very little contact, Superman kept tabs on Kara over the years since he knew where to send James/Jimmy. I'm hoping that this show lasts a few seasons; I'm curious as to who they would cast as Superman if they eventually bring him on for a special episode. The only thing that confused me was the aunt at the end. I'm assuming that it was her mother's twin sister, but she wasn't Superman's mother.
  14. The hubby is a runner; he ran the Marine Corps Marathon yesterday. I act the same way when he is away or has duty. I get nervous when I go to bed at night. when I turn out the lights at night, I get paranoid that someone knows exactly when I go to bed at night. I definitely sleep better when the hubby is home.
  15. My dad did this as a joke when I was a kid. Every Easter we would have a ham and there would be horseradish on the side for the adults. My dad asked me if I wanted to smell the horseradish. There were tears involved and my grandmother (his mother) never let him hear the end of it for the rest of the day.
  16. I've been following these people for too long. I was watching Grey's Anatomy last night and Derek died at Dillard Medical Center. I immediately thought of Jill and Derek Dillard.
  17. If the baby is born on Halloween, I wonder if they would hold off on the announcement for a few days and tell everyone the baby was born on 11/1.
  18. Virginian, but originally from NE Pennsylvania. I like winter, but I don't like the temperature below fifty degrees. I like it cool enough to wear sweaters and boots, but not need a heavy winter coat. I don't mind a few inches of snow, but we're normally not used to it and the city isn't prepared, causing the schools to close.
  19. Liverwurst? Dh always picks up a tube along with ring bologna when we visit Lancaster. Meatloaf is on our dinner menu today. The younger boy had a dentist appointment this morning. He was supposed to have a filling done, but they did a crown. He was not in a good mood afterwards and I ended up letting him stay home from school. He requested meatloaf for dinner tonight; we will eat it with broccoli and applesauce. I make a pretty boring meatloaf. 1 lb meatloaf, 1 egg, 1/2-3/4 cups of breadcrumbs, a minced onion, and a chopped red or green pepper. I always top my meatloaf with a can of tomato soup instead of ketchup. That's the way my mom has always made it, so I never acquired the taste of meatloaf with ketchup on top. Bake for an hour at 350 degrees. Anyone else into the whole Back to the Future Day hype? These have always been a few of my favorite movies. I'm kind of disappointed that the day is finally here. After today, they probably won't show the movies as often as they have the past few months. When they show them, at least I know that there is a good movie on tv.
  20. My mom used to make a poor man's version of pasta fagioli soup using canned pork and beans, tomato paste, and elbow macaroni. We grew up on canned vegetables. The only vegetable that wasn't canned was broccoli, which was fresh and only served with Sunday dinner, such as roast beef or a roast chicken and stuffing. I don't mind canned peas, but I absolutely hate creamed corn. My mom occasionally serves that as an extra veggie during dinner and my older son absolutely loves it. I just don't get it.
  21. The three-part series was interesting. I really liked how all of the kids were involved. As for the third episode, I liked Auggie and Lucas and I really liked Riley and Farkle. I wonder if the little comment about Riley and Farkle ending up together and nobody expecting that outcome was a bit of foreshadowing. Their scenes, along with Farkle and Zay were some of my favorites.
  22. I will be watching. I am a regular viewer of Law & Order SVU, but I am really looking forward to this episode. I am curious as to how they are going to spin this one.
  23. I grew up in a Polish-Italian household with a little bit of German. My maternal grandmother was full-blooded Italian and she used to do the seven fishes Christmas Eve dinner. My dad was in the military and we lived 8 hours away, so the tradition somewhat faded away as my mom isn't a big fan of cooking fish and my dad is allergic to shellfish. We had a few years where my mom would make linguini with anchovy sauce and our fish came from Long John Silvers. We've always gone to Christmas Eve Mass and our parish has changed the Mass time to 6 pm. As my mom has gotten older, the tradition has changed as she didn't want to spend her entire Christmas Eve cooking. She usually bakes a ham during the day and we have ham with kielbasa, macaroni salad, potato salad, and a few other small sides for Christmas Eve dinner after church. She usually makes the linguini with anchovy sauce for my dad for dinner one night the week between Christmas and New Years. My grandmother used to make about ten different types of cookies every year, but my mom usually only makes the anise sugar cookies. Half of them are cutout shapes with colored sugar sprinkled on them and the other half are round cookies with nonpareils.
  24. The hubby usually drags all of the stuff out of the attic the day after Thanksgiving. The only downside to decorating so early is that I'm ready for the stuff to be put away the day after Christmas.
  25. The law in our town for trick or treating is 12 and under, beginning at dusk until 8 pm. Most kids start around 6 pm and are finished by 7:30. Most people tend to overlook the older kids. I would rather see a teenager in full costume trick or treating than a parent pushing an infant in a stroller holding out the bag for the baby. I love taking my son trick or treating, although he doesn't have my stamina. He is usually finished after about 30 minutes, while I could walk around our entire neighborhood (a few hundred houses). My favorites are the Twix bars and Mounds and Almond Joys. Dh loves the peanut butter cups. We always confiscate the peanut candies since my older son is allergic to nuts. My older son loves Tootsie Rolls, but he got braces over the summer, so those will go to his brother. The chocolate candies are usually the first to go and by the third or fourth day, we're stuck with a bucket of Dum Dums, Smarties, and Sweet Tarts. After a week or two, they usually get tossed since I'm sick of looking at the candy.
