  1. Yup...sappy movies that I'd have liked as a preteen. The 1940's movies' stories aren't much better *but* they've got the incredible dancing, music, and singing.
  2. I keep looking for the classics from long ago-- White Christmas & Holiday Inn. The dancing by Danny Kaye in WC, and by Fred Astaire in HI is so outstanding. We have TCM but they're not showing the Xmas oldies.
  3. Yeah...cause the group isn't really funny. Jeff, at home, is funny at times. I was wondering if the ratings for the at-home episodes are higher or lower than when they were at the studio. Just wondering if TPTB at Food Network find the at-home version better (like a number of us do). Oh...I saw an old studio episode recently & was stunned by how nice Sunny looked. I'm doing a lot of wondering lately & wondered if anyone from FN is on here. Didn't we think that about one of the networks last year?
  4. Any ideas on who might take Shields' place? I was thinking about this today & wondered if Ruth Marcus would be the replacement.
  5. It will be a dark & stormy and *windy* day. Sunny's tresses will be swirling all over her head as she grills whatevahhh, shivering in her silvery metallic dress. Actually, I wish Food Network would provide her with a studio kitchen *now*!! They must have sets that she could spiff up.
  6. Thanks!! I sent it to my stepdaughter who used to buy these pies. It seems the closest of the copy cat recipes I found.
  7. Does anyone have a good copycat recipe of Bakers Square's Candy Cane Pie? My daughter said there are only a few stores open now & they're no longer making the Xmas holiday pies. These pies are/were OTT delicious!
  8. I made a Thai chicken soup for supper, a recipe I haven't made in a long time. I'm going through notebooks of old recipes, tossing some & saving others. They can really pile up on you.
  9. Speaking of Jeff's cake...if anyone here makes it, let us know what you think. I like the idea of keeping the white cake mix cake--white! But I'm not sure about the frosting and all the peppermint extract (that stuff can so easily cross the line and overwhelm). Jeff & his adorable wife were cute scarfing down the cake (both Jeff & GZ have wives who look like they could be sisters). Memo to Katie Lee: I would've rather seen precious, vocal Iris in that porkpie? hat than the dog.
  10. Maybe she got "the message" from folks re: her excessive use of the word fiance & cooled her jets (as we used to say). I've always liked her as she's a good cook (Iron Chef!) & I like her presentation skills: soft, normal voice, good instructions, no grinning grid, plus I enjoy her Italian-American ways/NYC-ness.
  11. I was reading the paper & forgot to turn on the TV until 11:32. But I got to see Alex's flaming provolone and Jeff's peppermint cake. Both of these recipes were calling my name! We may not be entertaining for the holidays but that doesn't mean we should be deprived of festive goodies.
  12. Why give hurricanes lame names, like Sandy? Name that hurricane Death Megatron 300 and I guarantee folks be evacuating like they need to. The dumbest thing I ever bought was a 2020 planner. Every few days try your jeans on just to make sure they fit. Pajamas will have you believe all is well in the kingdom. Never in a million years could I have imagined I would go up to a bank teller wearing a mask, asking for money.
  13. We had a quiche from Harris Teeter, and a tossed salad. I haven't eaten quiche in years as I prefer no crust (fritatta!). But I was so surprised by how good this crust was. Will def try again. It was "less work for mother"...any New Yorkers here remember that theme song for Horn & Hardart's?
  14. I can't stand watching him. He's so pompous & condescending...and OTT effected. There must be CNN professionals who could easily replace him. They're such an impressive group.
  15. Penne w/ Italian Turkey Sausage, a healthy recipe from Cooking Light, but gussied up, of course. And rotini is preferred!
  16. I know people were critical of Aaron McCargo but, for some reason, I could understand him. OMG--Bobby Flay in The Main Ingrediant! I hope he watches it and is reminded how pathetic he was starting out on TV. He & Giada (another poor performer her first few years) have really got a lot of nerve being critical of the nervous contestants on NFNS. Actually, even though Giada was not performing well in the early years of her first show, I wish it were still on. No huge grinning grill, no cutesy wutesy behavior--she cooked and explained what she was doing, period!
  17. I thought she was wearing an old astronaut's space suit. She looked ridiculous. I now hit the mute button when it's her turn. That loud, shrill voice makes my head ache. Last week she did mashed potatoes in a martini glass. This week was grits on the grill. Why is she still on this show? Maybe Big Daddy is available (I always liked him & his recipes). What was his real name...McLaren? Something like that. Or Jeff, the runner up in NFNS, who was given a spice show (yes, I haven't watched that competition in a long time!)
  18. Reading this made me feel bad. Father hissy fits are usually when these jerks find out the baby is a female. Far too many cultures still consider girls/women as inferior.
  19. Fried rice, using up leftover pork slices from a Thai delivery, & some frozen cooked shrimp, plus odds & ends from the crisper, plus the usual goodies like ginger & garlic, soy sauce, mirin, etc. Very tasty with some duck sauce.
  20. Thanks for posting the link. I loved her little trick to meet the cute JP!! What a lovely couple in a real loving marriage. I feel so bad for him.
  21. So glad Alex said you can skip the rum (for kids). I'm not a kid but have never liked the taste of booze in desserts (where did the word booze come from?). GZ's little boy, George, is so adorable! He & Lorenzo should have a Junior Kitchen Show where they taste test all the foods made (it might not last long cause GZ said George "will tell you" if he thinks something tastes good or not). Katie's roasted veggies with the feta "sauce" underneath looked interesting. I'm going to try it but will use sour cream or creme fraich instead of yogurt.
  22. Geez...wish I could "like" this a gazillion times! And limousines to take middle school kids to their proms (heard about that back in my Raleigh days)? I just don't understand the need to make a big daggone deal about nice but not extraordinary things (don't get me started on going overseas for a wedding proposal). Back to the promposal: I hope these young fellows know she'll say "yes" in advance.
  23. Re: Danny O'Shea? Strange. I wonder if Tara will try out with N. Bartholomay (he's always been a favorite of mine). Very sad news about Europeans. Could be a bad omen re: World's.
  24. I know what you're going through in a way as I have issues now & then. One of my favorite true comfort-me-foods during these times is tapioca pudding. I have to pace myself cause I can easily gobble down the whole big bowlful. I cut back on the sugar a bit. It has egg & milk so it's a real meal.
  25. Tonight's dinner: grilled marinated pork tenderloin, Spanish roasted potato "salad" (I serve the aioli on the side), & spinach for me...tiny peas for Mr P914.
