  1. While I wouldn't say I liked any of the Kevin's more than any of the Chiron's, Andre Holland made that role for me. I was actually quite angry at Kevin during the phone call, felt great trepidation while Chiron was going to meet Kevin and all of that melted away once they met. Once Kevin looked at him and said "You haven't changed one damn bit" even though he was presented with this completely different man then what he expected, I was team Chiron and Kevin. It wasn't obvious to me until act 3 this was where it would go.
  2. Do you mean adult Kevin played by Andre Holland?
  3. You forgot that it showed that a black female driven historical pic can make money.
  4. I saw Maudie through my local film series. It was a huge hit, however our crowd does steer older and we're in Canada, so most had memories of Maud Lewis from media in the 60's. I'm curious if it's as loved outside of Canada. The acting is fantastic in it. No, Ethan Hawk doesn't really look like her husband, did but he did transform into an old, inarticulate, curmudgeon really effectively.
  5. I wouldn't mind that one bit. What else is there in February to do besides Valentines Day? And if you're single it's just a kick in the teeth.
  6. I can't believe that no one has mentioned Lion yet. At the screening I saw it by the end all you could hear was the sniffling in the audience.
  7. Moonlight is on Netflix now in Canada. Just watched it again.
  8. I've already seen people comparing Steve Carrell in this to his Michael Scott. TBH I didn't think of Michael Scott, well, not much, when I saw this. Too many of Bobby's digs are clearly intentionally placed to get a rise. Michael Scott was so oblivious in his nature and here,,, no. There is definitely some poking the bear tactics going on.
  9. I think one of the biggest problemsin the Dean's relationship with his son is that Troy isn't really seen or treated like a separate person but an extension or continuation of himself and his own goals. He doesn't see Troy ever getting himself into the same situation as Reggie because he would certainly never get himself in that situation. He would never be a victim. Of course you can still ask the same question; does he think he is protected against systemic racism and no one else that is black? Does that help him sleep at night?
  10. You beat me to it! But I am going to add this link to the acceptance speech.
  11. I could recommend this show on the Scandal parody alone.
  12. Hollywood seemed to have endless space for blondes, I think they could have made room.
  13. Yes and no. They might say that that they wanted to make that film but what they also wanted to make is a romance with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt with a happy ending. I don't think they convinced enough people that this film coul be both.
  14. I think 'All Eyes On Me' could be very interesting. .. however I'm really distracted by the fact that the actor they got to play Tupac in 'Straight Outta Compton ' was a better likeness. ETA: and speaking of Straight Outta Compton, while I watched the whole trailer for 'Detroit ' I'm not sure I can go to a theatre and watch Eazy E die again.
  15. Saroo's adopted parents in Lion were pretty amazing people. His biological mom was pretty good too, refusing the milk do the kids could have it.
  16. I almost feel silly posting this after the thoughtful post above by DisneyBoy, but I just saw the nominations for MTV awards and Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome were nominated for Best Kiss. I just thought that was cute. It's only other nom is the moment Paula tells Black she loves him for Best Tearjerker. ETA; at second glance I was wrong. It was also nominated for Best American Story, which sounds like a weird category.
  17. Well, I thought she was great in Lion. However, even if Viola Davis had been counted as a lead, imo, that Oscar would have gone to Naomi Harris. It was such a good year in film.
  18. It's a messed up premise but unfortunately it's not an impossible one because it happened. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2015/11/12/jack-yufe-a-jew-separated-for-years-from-his-ex-nazi-twin-brother-dies-at-82/?utm_term=.6a2a3e09825b Knowing that it's real does make it an interesting story to explore but I'm kind of curiousabout the minds that heard about this story and decided it was to be told as a family oriented Disney story. Because this is some dark stuff.
  19. Kristen Stewart said that her and Jesse Eisenberg had this discussion about working with Woody Allen. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/kristen-stewart-admits-concern-about-working-with-woody-allen-over-sex-abuse-allegations-a7024406.html
  20. Yeah, a blooper reel wasn't really fitting for this film.
  21. I would keep an eye on the Moonlight cast. If there's any justice in this world they'd all become huge stars IMO.
  22. There's a lot of speculation about that moment on youtube where it was posted and that scene stuck with me as well after seeing the movie. Some people think it was a warning and other people think he was getting back at the kid because in the previous scene they shared in the car Travis, (unintentionally, I think,) made Chiron feel foolish and vulnerable because he asked about women in his life.
  23. Agreed. I was ready to say this film went "To hell with continuity!" when I saw Black. But then Trevante Rhodes really sold that this was the same guy in that diner scene. He played tongue tied teenager really well, and I absolutely did not expect to see that from this man or to identify with that situation so much.
