I was so caught up in my rage spiral over Abbie, I completely forgot to mention how horrified I was with what they did to Headless. I hated what they did to him in S2 and that they made him nothing but Emo Abraham and muted all the of menacing dread he'd displayed in S1. I didn't particularly miss him in S3, since they had ruined him in S2. But I would have loved for him to come back. When it seemed like he did I was thrilled. Until... WTF? He was reduced to a walk on that did Ichabod's bidding? "Come along Headless kill the mean Goddess! Good job. Now you can go away now." And he does. Sigh.

Unpopular Opinions: All Alone in Purgatory
DearEvette replied to FormerMod-a1's topic in Sleepy Hollow [V]
I do blame the writers. Nicole may have wanted off but they all knew this. it wasn't a surprise to them. Ok, so. Write toward that then. Lay the foundation so we could see the clues. They were going for maximum shock and awe. But we would have still been shocked even if we had gotten the breadcrumbs to follow the trail because as viewers we find it inconceivable that they would kill off such an important character. But in retrospect, written well, we could have looked back and said " Ah, ha!" I think half of the anger is how they killed her. There is a serious tone deafness in how they killed her. How many times does Abbie have to sacrifice herself? This'll make the third time. Did they have to imply that her presence was simply there as "a guide" for Ichabod? Do they not know how "Magical Negro" that sounds? Why not just kill her in an epic battle, let her go out swinging and fierce? I think the other half the anger, esp among the hard core Nikki fans is because of the ship teasing. They went at that really hard in the back half of the season promising a pay off that never came and now never will. Why not throw the Ichabbie shippers a bone and pay off all the UST they've been playing with for the whole damn season? It would have cost them nothing because they knew she wasn't coming back and just might have softened the blow to some fans because at least they got that? It is rather academic anyway, if the show had been well written engaging all along Nicole's leaving would have been sad and horrible but people would still be excited for the show. For most people the ONLY thing keeping them on the show was Nicole and Tom together, so yeah, the writing is the problem.- 388 replies

I feel like I just got my divorce papers from a sad three year marriage. The first year was so giddy and happy and wonderful. But he cheated on me the second year, barely noticed I was alive. We tried to reconcile in the third year, we really worked at it, we had some great moments, things were starting to look up. But then nothing seemed to feel right. We just couldn't recapture the magic no matter how hard we tried. And then he betrayed me one last time. One time too many. So that's it. it is over. I need to watch a finale that ends on a hopeful, happy note. Maybe I'll go re-watch the Eureka finale.

- My theory is that they will try to capture lightning in the bottle again and maybe attempt to cast someone new. Since the show's most rabid fanbase at the end seemed to be WOC and the show was being hailed for its diversity, i would imagine they are going to try to cast another black actress. I Of course, if Tom negotiated for a lighter schedule and Nicole is gone is this really a show anyone is going to want to watch? Already Nicole's fan-base & Ichabbie shippers are fleeing like the building is on fire. Tom's fan-base may stay but if he isn't going to be on, then they won't be as invested either.

Ok I just saw the funniest tweet: The Walking Dead: We've just has the worst season finale ever. Sleepy Hollow: Challenge Accepted! BWAH. And now I can't find it to attribute it....

Nope. Nope. Nopity, nope. I am done. What kills me, is they knew she was leaving and still couldn't throw Ichabbie a bone. They could have given the shippers half a season.

I think Stephanie is arrogant, yes. And super confident in her abilities. But I don't agree that I am seeing entitlement. I remember when Meredith got the job of Chief of General Surgery(?) and Bailey low-balled her salary, almost to an insulting degree. Finally Mer went in to negotiate it and Bailey told her, nobody is going to give you anything you are going to have to fight for it. And also words along the line of "know your worth." It was obviously a meta-message in there from feminist writers in a feminist leaning show about women being more assertive and commanding the right salary for their skills etc. etc. But also in the back of my mind is the meta-message about how they seem to be finally crafting Stephanie's character this season. This is a show created and written by a black woman in an industry that largely finds black women invisible. I can't help thinking that in the season where issues of race, visibility and credibility have already come out through Stephanie, if this isn't yet another iteration of that in another form as well. Is she being given these characteristics of hyper confidence, arrogance and this extra hustle because it is what she knows she has to do it because no one will be doing it for her?

Ha! IKR? Even Mary Sue is like "Does she know who I am?" LOL.

i was willing to cut Penny some slack. But this episode really makes me wonder what kinda crack is in the pipe those writers are smoking with this character. Maybe if Samantha Sloyan was a more approachable actress then I could hand wave away some of the problems with her storyline. But she isn't really a sympathetic actress in this case. Her 'mic drop' speech was just bad, terrible, terribad. And who are all these people who are so impressed with her than she has them all recommending her? I don't think Stephanie & Jo are necessarily upset that she won the grant, after all it is available for anyone to apply and at the start of the show they seemed to assume she was going to apply. I think they were upset because in the end it looks like she was being shady about it. Like she was purposely lying to them only to stealth apply. Again, not a horrible thing on a professional level but I could see how they could feel skirty about it on a friendship level. I am not sure I am 100% certain that Owen knwos the truth about Riggs' marriage. But even if it is true, it doesn't matter if Riggs was fucking the every Doctor without a border. That is not the reason his wife died. It is also not Riggs' fault that Amelia, a grown ass-woman, didn't tell him she was an addict. I am so tired of Owen's anger at Riggs. I do like the actor who plays Rigg's a lot. His face when he realizes Amelia was an alcoholic was a great bit of non-verbal acting.

Brain Bleed: The Shows We Hate & The Reasons We Hate Them
DearEvette replied to SPLAIN's topic in Everything Else TV
I irrationally hate Scorpion, a show I have never watched, because it co-stars Kat McPhee who is on my "celebrity I irrationally hate" list. But I like your reasoning better. Leverage is like the tv version of comfort food for me. When I am flipping around and can't settle on something, I'll find an episode of Leverage and watch it. Always makes me happy. -
I think they've evolved with Zoey and I like where they're going with her. I remember the episode last year where Bow takes Diane to work with her and Diane becomes fascinated with the guy with a hatchet in his head. Bow characterizes Zoe as the one who would not work outside the home but marry well "probably several times." Junior is characterized as the typical nerd who would probably live at home for awhile. Jack is the only one who is considered not quite bright. while Diane is smart, with her only age and lack of life experience limiting her. This episode seems to have continued with those characterizations with the exception of Zoe. Before, the show seems to have taken pains to paint her as a smart but rather shallow person. But starting with the car episode and now this one, it seems the show has decided to give Zoey some depth and I like it a lot. I don't think Junior is being painted as dumb, really. But rather naive and credulous in the ways that people who tend to live inside books and video games can be. He's book smart, not street smart. Now Jack, they really are making him rather dim, bless his heart. Diane is a baby shark. I think they had to give her some vulnerabilities and still make her believe silly things otherwise her character is at risk of becoming unlikable. Thankfully Marsai Martin is so charming that she helps keep Diane from stepping over the line into too pre-cocious territory. I loved the the whole Tilapia as trash fish. That scene was great. Also, I liked the sly little line from Stevens to his "female diversity hire." It is a great little acknowledgement that "diversity hires" (i.e. affirmative action) in the workplace actually benefits white females more than POC. Poor Josh, not even considered a possible option for being a guardian. I LOVED the Different Strokes credit sequence. I was humming the song all night.

I finally got to watch untucked and I liked how awkward Chi Chi and Kim Chi were together at first then they bonded on Turkey Necks and Oxtails. I love how they were both pleased with the idea of sucking out the marrow! Kim Chi is a down-low Southerner! Nobody doubted at all that Betty and Naomi would be the B2. It feels weird but Betty's outro on Untucked seemed much longer and, I dunno, more ominous than anyone else's. Almost like that slo-mo scene you get in those Dateline episodes before somebody gets killed. I loved Robbie giving Naomi very accurate and very welcome runway advice. Yes, she is resting on body and all her runway looks are the same. Take the advice, Naomi! My reading from the things Bob and Thorgy have said about Betty is that yes she is a bitch and prickly and difficult, but I get the sense that even with all that they both like Betty. They hold her in affection despite all that. So in that sense she can't be all bad. I can imagine that she's the type who can be off putting until or unless you get to know her and then she may be a good friend. I have friends like that, people that I have to explain to other people. After the vidoe message from her sister she was talking about their division of labor in their business. She is the people person, Betty isn't. And frankly for all her bitchiness I like Betty's brand way more than, say, Derrick's. [1] - I don't know if that was a mind game, though. It feels like Bob had come with a bunch of complete ideas for Snatch Game and just so happens Whoopi was one of them. She actually talked more about Carol Channing than Whoopi. So I didn't get the sense she just pulled Whoopi out to psych out Naomi since she doesn't strike me as that vindictive. What I got from scene that is that Bob was super excited and wanted to show all her new friends all her great toys. I mean, she was talking so fast her words were spilling over themselves. [2] - Now the Madonna thing is a case where I suspect the Queens did psych themselves out. When I think of Madonna iconic looks, I immediately think of: 1) Madonna during the 80s 'Desperately Seeking Susan' time period with the crop tops, the messy hair, the 10,000 rubber bracelets 2) Like a Virgin Madonna with the bustier wedding dress, the big wonkin's cross necklace and the Boy-Toy belt. 3) The Vogue tour look that Chi Chi Channeled - The John Paul Gaultier stuff 4) That black and white polka-dot circus top and the white hip hugger pants, and curly hair from the Blonde Ambition tour So I wonder if maybe they thought, "oh everybody is gonna do those... let me think of the most obscure Madonna look I can" and weirdly they all settled on the Kimono. LOL. And finally, I have to mention the LSFYL. While I don't think either Betty or Naomi killed it, I love that it wasn't one of those desperate lip syncs with all sorts of crazy flourishes. Neither one was trying to get in the others' way and upstage her. They were basically doing their own thing, and in some cases it looks like they were politely giving each other their own space.

These days, this is me in a nutshell. I love TV, not gonna lie but I've watched damn near 40 years of tv with very little diversity. So now, I figure I can balance the scales a bit. Right now, any whiff of diversity, esp. a show featuring a black female will get me to give the show a try. A bad show won't keep me, but at least I'll give it a couple three looks. And it will get me to watch channels/shows I may not have normally given a second look -- Killjoys (love), The Expanse (took me a while but loved it by the end of first season), The Outsiders (fascinated despite myself), Stitchers (gave up, not even my love for Salli Richardson will get me to like this), Archer (sure, Lana is animated but that still counts). I'll still watch a show that has little or no diversity, but it is generally shows whose storytelling is irresistible like Breaking Bad or Mad Men. But if it is standard procedural fare or a doctor or lawyer show then, yeah I'll most likely pass.

Hence the "let's pretend" and "theoretically" qualifiers in the post. It was meant to be an illustrative example of the ways in which influence and control can manifest rather than an implicit example of something that we all know isn't actually true.

I think Michelle's show-boating comment was the only criticism she could make with Bob for that episode, and it was a reach, imo. Really Bob had a great night. Her runway was excellent. She embraced the spirit of Snatch Game perfectly by choosing characters that are recognizable, exploiting the one thing they are recognizable for and yanking it up to 100. I kinda did wince a little when she told that Madonna anecdote because it seemed so try hard. But it also came off like nervous talking. So I could see where Michelle might have wanted her to pull back there. But she pretty much saved Snatch Game from being an utter bore. Thorgy & ChiChi were good, but Bob actually made me laugh. I wish Naomi had stuck with Whoopi. Even if Bob had settled on Whoopi they weren't actually doing the same Whoopi. Naomi seemed like she was going to do Whoopi as Celie. The only issue I might have had with that, was, could you even make Celie funny? Whereas Bob looked like he was gonna do 'Sister Act' Whoopi. Case in point, Bob didn't actually do Uzo Aduba, but rather she did Suzanne (Crazy Eyes), a character Uzo herself plays. I bet Acid Betty could have done a fab Jessica Walter. All you need is a champagne glass, a great eye-roll and some really snarky zingers. I still thin AB tanked on purpose. AB has shown herself to be a shrewd performance artist. A person as smart as she should not have been capable of being that bad for a caricature like Nancy Grace.

So...they kept Derrick around to do Britney for Snatch Game and this is what she gives us? She wasn't funny or quick or punny. She was just giving face. That is it. So very underwhelmed. At least we got saved from that horrible "white girl who thinks acting out black stereotypes is funny" character. ChiChi's side eye was great. I also can shenanigans that she placed higher than ChiChi. ChiChi's Eartha Kitt was so much wittier and her runway was better. Ugh. Now that she's actually done Britney maybe they'll start judging her and stop coddlingher. Bob was Hilarious! Her Uzo and her Carol Channing were great. My god, what the heck Acid Betty? Did she throw it? You can't tell me she couldn't do better than that. She could have done better make-up than that. Poor Naomi. I like how she just straight up said she was embarrassed.

Not really. For one thing we don;t know what the terms of the post-nup were. How are children provisioned? What is April entitled to? Obviously Catherine would have made sure the post-nup was not going to hurt them, but bitterness + money + resentment + hurt feelings can make a lot of people do things they wouldn't normally do. Look at the earlier episode that starred Rita Morena. She didn't care about her husband's money when they got married but when he fell in love with someone else she refused a divorce to get the 30 million dollars she was entitled to if she was still married to him when he died. Also, the ability to mold the mind and ideals of of a person while they are young is a major deal, especially when you are talking the type of influence such as a foundation like Harper-Avery is supposed to have. I mean they had enough money to buy a hospital and not feel the pinch. For instance, how are they going to decide on the religious guidance of the child? Who gets to decide there? Let's pretend April's faith was the sort that didn't believe in rights for gay people. In a case like that, then this child, influenced by said religion at an early age, could theoretically use the might of that power to throw money behind things that are opposed to LGBT interests. It is just an example, but those are the sorts of things that come into play when you are talking about who gets to control and influence a small child who will later come into a lot of money. Gloria Vanderbilt is a famous case of a child heiress whose various family members fought control over her.

S06.E16: Last Day on Earth - Pre-Air Speculation and Live Chat
DearEvette replied to HalcyonDays's topic in S06
You guys are so funny. I have been debating all day. Will I watch live or let myself be spoiled to prepare myself? My husband is looking at me like "Dude, get a grip!" LOL. I plan to watch live. As of now. That might change in 25 minutes. It's just a tv show, right? No need to stress. It'll be ok. -
Yeah, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is great for diversity and a fab show. One of my faves. But I was trying to look at show where there were true leads, not necessarily ensembles. I also considered Chicago Med, because it has three black female main characters, but none of them, imo, could be considered leads, esp. since none of them so far has gotten any storylines of their own really. Or rather nothing that drives narrative or speaks to their inner lives.
-
Heh. It looks like Shonda Rhimes and Fox account for pretty much 100% of network dramas with black female leads. - Minority Report is cancelled - Sleepy Hollow's fate is up in the air - Empire will be back ABC is the most diverse across different ethnicites. Including the Shonda shows, we have: Quantico - East Indian female lead Agents of SHIELD - Asian female leads NBC is partial to Latina leads: -Chicago Fire -Shades of Blue CBS surprisingly has a lot more female lead shows that I'd thought, but only one with a WOC: Elementary (Asian female lead) or two if we consider Grace Park (Asian) a lead in Hawaii 5-0 In addition to the ones mentioned above, Fox also has a Latina lead in Rosewood. If we add in comedies: ABC is still pretty diverse: Blackish (black female lead) Fresh Off the Boat (Asian female lead) NBC is till pretty partial to Latinas: -SuperStore -Telenovela CBS: Crickets. Crickets. I am not finding any WOC leads or co-leads in any CBS comedies. Unless we count CW as a subsidiary, which case Jane the Virgin would count.

I also think the issues set up for them have been very interesting, far beyond Grey's standard soapy fare. There are are really good moral, ethical, legal and emotional stuff all roiling round in their story. I am gonna go the unpopular route and say that Catherine's inclusion is also a very good thing for the story. It is myopic to think that she wouldn't be involved. She loves her son, but she is also a sharp businesswoman who has for years been protecting her family's financial and professional interests. People like that don't sit back and just let things happen. And frankly, imo, left to their own devices April and Jackson by themselves do not make the story sing. I find their fighting tedious tbh. But with Catherine in the mix the story can go a lot of different ways. Jackson, rather naively, doesn't think about the Harper-Avery stuff, he is too busy just trying to be a regular guy. But unless there are a bunch of siblings or cousins running around, this kid is the next big heir. So it makes sense Catherine would be invested in the child.

Rose Rollins plays the co-owner of the detective agency and best friend of Mireille Enos' character on The Catch.

Let me get the UGH!!! stuff out of the way first. BUSTY ROSS. Why people why?!?!?! I was so pissed but then I read the article posted almost right after the episode aired (hmm... as if they knew fans would not like the idea of a revived BR). Ok, fine, let her and Ichabod say goodbye. Whatever. She is a terrible actress. Was that supposed to be weariness and despair on her face when she sat down with that blanket? JOE! I loved him as an addition and am super sad that he died. But I remember that conversation between Irving and his Priest about the companions of the Witnesses and some of them falling during the tribulations. It makes sense that some of their people to die. And at least I care about Joe and would not cheer him dying. DANNY. He's was part of the team for all of a nanosecond and started giving orders? Bitch please. Or questioning their decisions. 'Why do they both have to go?' Uh, Pandora's weary expression as she explained was great. If She could have eye-rolled him it would have been even better. I am glad he didn't die. Abbie doesn't need to mourn him like some noble martyr. But I hope she finds out he's been spying on her and reporting back about her and it kills any trust in for him in her. Please. Anything. Ok onto the good stuff. This was actually a good episode. Really good from a mythology standpoint. I especially love the shot of Abbie and Ichabod going across the Delaware, her singing, him looking all gorgeous bathed in the Dawn's Early Light. I loved all the time Abbie and Ichabod spent together. This was a good episode for their together time. I know people are pissed about Betsy, but for me all the good Ichabod/Abbie face time really outweighs that. Papa Mills being in the know! I the show gets renewed I hope he stays around. Jenny doesn't fall far from the tree. So it looks like Washington grabbed Betsy's cutlass when he left and he is actually the one that left it in the well, not her? My biggest disappointment, from a shipper standpoint, is if the show is using all the great Ichabbie stuff as a way to troll the shipper fans. Outside of that I am enjoying the storytelling, but it'll be tainted if that is what is happening. It doesn't help that Mison is really playing Ichabod as a man deeply in love. I mena he practically devours her with his eyes. I don't know if that is a directing note or if that is how he is choosing to do it. But if I don't think about the shippy stuff, this was a really, really good episode. Acts great as a penultimate episode.
-
Catherine was insistent that April sign a post-nuptial agreement. So maybe there was provision in there about children & divorce etc. that is very beneficial to April. That could be the "fraud" Catherine is talking about. I never thought I'd say this in a million years, but I liked the Maggie/Amelia/Meredith/Alex stuff. I was never crazy about it before it felt forced. But this felt natural. And Alex feels like their bro. I enjoyed them sitting around, waiting for pizza feeling comfortable enough with each other to speak unvarnished truth. Maggie wasn't neurotic (even though I kinda like her neurotic personality). She just sounded like a woman who was disappointed. Amelia wasn't annoying and seemed content in her choice. On a shallow note, I liked Steph's twist out. I had to snort at Owen clutching his pearls at the "inappropriate" conversation . Dude, did you wander into the wrong show? Oh, and by the way, why not go punch out your brother in law in the waiting room while you're at it. And we got kids sighting! The little actress that played Sofia was cute and the little girl who played Zola got lines too.

Heh. There is a funny article I read calling out Ron for being relentlessly mediocre even though he had a level of privilege and access that Harry and Hermione never had. Here is a quote:
