  1. Wasn't there some sort of prize also? Like a washing machine, or something that was part of the winner's story. My aunt used to watch that regularly.
  2. I get what you are saying. My mother was very difficult and very rude to the caregivers. My brother and I met with the owner of the agency and explained the situation, and we had the same people 4-5 days a week, and another pair who covered the other days (we had to have 24 hour coverage). I understand, it is very hard to find caregivers who will do the job and who my mother, mainly, would tolerate. My dad was easy and liked everyone. I wish you luck. I understand what you are going through.
  3. My $0.02 worth. The care givers who my brother and I used for my parents when they were still at home were employed by an agency. They were expected to fix meals and do light housekeeping. They would do the laundry, mop the kitchen floor (after I pointed out it was needed), clean up the bathroom, shower my parents, change bed linen, and go to the grocery store when necessary. We left some money in a lock box, and the caregiver would use that for what they needed and leave the receipt in the box. The caregiver would take them to appointments if we were not available. I had the lady take my mom, and my dad, to the salon to get their nails cut, for example. When my dad was in a nursing home, the caregiver would take my mom to visit. They did laundry and made sure my parents were dressed in clean clothes every day. The agency made sure the caregivers were bonded, had a car and insurance, and were checked on by the owner of the agency. The agency had insurance, and if one caregiver called in or was unable to work, they sent a replacement. I think that services and expectations may be different for independent caregivers who are working on their own. Kind of like apples and oranges--it is hard to compare.
  4. I had posted a question on my local Nextdoor app, asking if anyone had switched their mobile phone service from Verizon to Spectrum/Charter, and if so, how is the service and reception. I did a double take when I received a response from a guy named James Duggar. I feel sorry for any non-related Duggar who follows this family. Has anyone here made this switch, and, if so, are you happy. It is so much more cost-friendly.
  5. Well, I was wrong. The Blue Angels are back. They must have been doing a night practice flight. Actually I was sort of surprised that they would leave after doing an air show. They probably had some different maneuvers to practice. I expect to hear them leaving tomorrow. I hope not too early.
  6. I had an MRI for wrist pain a couple of years ago, and it did not show Carpal Tunnel. My doctor put me in a wrist brace for about 3 months, and it was much better. I was doing assembly on a table this week, and my wrist hurts again. I will put the brace back on for the rest of the week and see if it calms down. My brace is made by Bregg and is available on Amazon. It has the metal strip in it. It really does help. Pain in the wrist is not always Carpal Tunnel, and it can go away with rest. If it becomes constant the doctor can give you a cortisone shot in the wrist (THAT HURTS!!!!!). If it continues you should see an orthopedic doctor so they can do tests.
  7. The Blue Angels have been in town all week and have been flying over my house doing practice runs. I am about 10 mile from the airport they are using, but it is amazing how loud they are--especially when flying low overhead. They have been practicing all week and are doing their last air show right now. I have been watching from my front porch. They are amazing.
  8. Apparently Plexus became available in Canada this past March. It is not FDA approved in the US, nor is it approved by the equivalent agency in Canada. I found this info on a Google search. It is supposed to contain "natural" stimulants to increase weight loss. I wish people would understand that just become something is sold as "natural" it is not necessarily good for you. It reminds me of the Phen Phen (sp?) that was popular several years ago. It was supposed to help weight loss. A few nurses I worked with used it. One ended up with very serious cardiac issues, and the fad died out very quickly. I really worry about Nurie taking Plexus while pregnant. I wonder who decided this was safe. With no FDA studies, it must just be someones best guess. This company must have some very effective sales people. The money they spend on Plexus would be much better spent on healthy, real food. But then there wouldn't be any free trips to Hawaii. Or no one to give Jill "real" earrings. Edited--Plexus has been available in Canada since March, 2018 according to a different article.
  9. They unblocked the street, so I was able to drive by today. The scorched house will need new paint and windows, but at least it did not burn down. They really did an excellent job with the cleanup. They smoothed out the street, but they did not finish the job, and they still have one more street to go. My guess is that it will be a while before they finish. No word on the condition of any of the workers. It was a horrible accident, but it really could have been so much worse.
  10. I understand what they are saying, but for the benefit of those who are not fluent in DuggarSpeak it would be very helpful if they would proofread before hitting "send".
  11. Wait. Why is there a gender reveal for Philip? I know what she means, but people not versed in JillSpeak might be confused by that post. Unless Philip became a father and she failed to mention it. Nurie doesn't get a mention?
  12. We had some excitement here this morning. We have been having the streets resurfaced and sealed. I was "in lockdown" all day yesterday and this morning while the tar cured in front of my house. They were working on the street around the corner this morning, and around noon the tar truck exploded. My house really shook, and my cats were terrified. By the time I got out there, the street was lined with fire trucks and ambulances. The four men that worked for the tar company were injured. One was life flighted out to a burn unit in Davis, CA. He was very badly burned, and may not make it. The others were taken by ambulance to, I think, Reno. Two houses were scorched, one was not too bad, and one was worse. Their front yard and the front of their house was pretty burned, or so I have been told. I haven't been able to get down there to see it yet. The street is still blocked. Also one garage door across the street was hit with truck parts that blew off the truck in the explosion. Luckily, one neighbor who is a retired fire fighter got a garden hose and hosed down the propane tanks on the truck, and another neighbor hosed the flames in the one yard until the fire trucks arrived. OSHA and the fire department have the street blocked off for the foreseeable future so they can investigate how this happened. This all happened about 10 minutes after the emergency workers were called to a car crash a few miles away. The fire department and EMTs were very busy this morning.
  13. My guess is prayer meetings. I doubt she is having dinner parties, and certainly not fun game nights or a bridge --or poker club.
  14. Maybe a district request? I have no idea but I could see that happening. I just really, really hope that at least Iz is in school. I'm wondering if they would opt for a private Christian school, who really would not like the publicity. (Nothing at all against private schools. We have some great ones around here.). I have thought in the past that Jill posted way, way too much private business about her kids. J and D actually do not owe the public any information about them or their kids. (I know---Happy Mail. But I live in hope for the privacy of the kids.)
  15. But at least if the door was moved it wouldn't be slamming into the fireplace. I agree with you, removal would have been better. That is just a very strange house, and I don't think I would have been willing to put any money into it. I'm very curious about the original configuration of that building. Was it originally a parsonage? I'm trying to think of any reason that any one or any business would have placed the fireplace there in the first place. It just doesn't make any sense.
  16. True. But before she also posted pictures of the school and the name of the school. Maybe it was easier just not to post. But maybe I am giving Jill too much credit for thinking things out. (I am grasping at straws here. I just really, really hope at least Izzy is back at school this year. Deciding to wait a year for Kindergarten--I get that. But I sure hope Izzy is getting the school experience that he appeared to like so much.)
  17. Just a thought--maybe the school asked them not to post. School officials would know of Jill's family history and how she has a social media following. Especially if it is private school.
  18. It appears that there are 3 windows in the front room. It would not have been hard to convert the front door to a window, and more the door to where the windows are. I'm still stumped on the fireplace behind the door.
  19. I always had the feeling that Ben is willing to work--he had a job before he married--but Jessa expected him to follow the Gothard model; don't work for strangers and be home most of the time. I think maybe JB discouraged him from working outside of the family. They are a closed group.
  20. I think that picture of the stuffies on the ladder was taken during the building/renovation of the barndo. The ladder was sitting around, and the child decided to play with it. That's why all the stuff was all over the floor. Probably not the safest place to be playing as I am sure there were tools and nails all over.
  21. I would have found some way to move the front door, but maybe that wouldn't work, either. I don't know the exact floor plan. But there must be some option. That really is an odd house.
