  1. If you’re curious about the Wow Airlines story that John skipped over, Rachel Maddow last Monday delved into that aspect of the crazy Italygate lady. Grifter extraordinaire. Bless that CSPAN anchor for his unflappability. I knew immediately that these religious HCSMs would be terrible about things like birth control and abortion but, damn, they’re so much worse than I imagined.
  2. They both also did the same bit when the Russian photographer blocked the view of the cameras behind him during the Biden-Putin meeting. Both shows had a crew member get in the camera frame, blocking the view of them. Sometimes the joke is just obvious—I’m impressed by how often they don’t go for the same joke.
  3. And I 100% saw it this way. They are colleagues with shared experiences, and show biz creates even closer relationships than most colleagues. I think Christine put a tiny bit of emphasis on how “naughty” it would be for him to go to a show with someone else as a joke, with the understanding that everybody on planet Earth knows how devoted Stephen is to Evie.
  4. And this is why they won the Peabody…
  5. So is Stephen Colbert spying on Seth’s Cicada, Cicada rehearsals? He’s already had Nathan Lane and Christine Baranski on his show since he went back to the theater. If he books Harvey Fierstein, Seth needs to get a cease and desist letter against him!
  6. I do really love For All Mankind, too. (Different feel than TL, though.) But those have been the only standouts for me.
  7. Yes! Last night’s show was the first place I heard that a big voting rights vote was coming the next day. And then her guest did SUCH a helpful breakdown on how it wouldn’t go anywhere yet, so what’s really needed is for everyone to spend 4th of July weekend contacting Senators. If he hadn’t been on with that info in advance, I would have just felt dispirited and flail-y about Congress.
  8. I was not. The story was that a sex tape leaked of a political candidate doing something consensual but outside conventional norms. This is the kind of thing Katie Hill got hounded out of Congress for when her ex revenge porned her. Amplifying this kind of story (even for “good-natured lulz”) just encourages more people to do it. If it were a married, Conservative candidate who was being hypocritical about legislating sexuality, I would get the value, for both news and satire. But that wasn’t the story Stephen told. A day later, there’s speculation the candidate himself was involved in the leak in order to get more attention for his campaign. In that case, although not known at the time, there wouldn’t be the spreading revenge porn angle but there’d be the “duped into amplifying this guy’s self promotion” angle.
  9. Note that the people he lambastes are generally people who have shown callousness and cruelty to others. In other words, punching up, only at people who punch down.
  10. Thanks! Looks like I’ll be shelling out for ATV+ for a month…
  11. I found the Putin-Olympics-condom bits here (scroll to bottom for the video): https://www.rawstory.com/john-oliver-reschedule-the-olympics-for-safety/
  12. I haven’t been able to find how many episodes the season is (not listed in IMDb beyond 2.01 and nothing in Variety). If it’s 10 episodes again, I’ll see y’all on September 24, when I can binge it. (Right before the AppleTV+ complimentary subscription expires!)
  13. Really? That just seems to shine through to me in all his interactions with people. He seems to genuinely like talking with his guests and really care for his crew. He puts on an act to joke about how terrible some of his writers’ jokes are, but can barely get through it without cracking up.
  14. Well I guess Seth is truly committing to Operation You Can Touch This, if he paid Wally for multiple lines!
  15. I miss the intimacy, too. But I did realize that in addition to the hand in the pocket, I’ve missed the way he truly commits to handling all his invisible props. He has master level mime skills when he’s moving freely on a stage versus not being able to do nearly as much sitting behind a desk.
  16. Yeah, Stephen’s analogy to an STD study in Daytona Beach at spring break was an apt and excellent pushback, but Jon’s rant dominated the segment. It was a sad time for me in what should have been a joyful show. 😕
  17. Kenyan was a last-minute fill-in, but this was honestly so sweet.
  18. The toilet paper tiff was the funniest thing the whole show, and probably the whole mayoral race! Saaaaame! “I don’t know … if I’ll still be married when I get home.” Even worse, Texas has still done jack squat to improve their electrical grid and they’re expecting some power outages this summer, too. So it won’t just be prisoners dying of heat.
  19. I laughed out loud at Rachel’s reaction to the Putin interview. “I don’t go in for that macho thing. My shirt just happens to fall off. A lot.” That’s exactly what I was thinking!
  20. ❤️Bootsie!❤️ Honestly, she held out WAY longer than I would have with those bugs on her hand. Her son had better have paid up double!
  21. If Seth really had a musical “Cicada, Cicada” with Christine Baranksi, Harvey Fierstein, and Nathan Lane—take my money, I’m flying to New York! 😍😍😍
  22. At least back the, when he listened, he realized they were right and he could work to fix it. Now when he listens, the screamers are just wrong. So there’s nothing he can take personally, but there’s also nothing he can do to fix it.
  23. I had to Google and it was apparently last October. I heard about them someplace like Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me, but they’re real. (I remember hearing some time before that, that Millennials/Gen-Z don’t eat cereal because getting a bowl, spoon, and milk is too much of a bother, so I assume this was the corporate response. And/or capitalizing on marijuana legalization! 😄) Oh, we used to get that granola when I was a kid! It was so good!
  24. May 30, 2021 I usually love these web exclusives and there’s plenty of fun stuff here, like the Shaq/Tony love fest. But it feels a little off. 1) John loves spending HBO’s money on charity, but usually it’s for something playfully absurd that could happen (finding a rat erotica painting, or renaming a sewage plant). In what world could Cheerios actually tweet out “F. U.” and what would be the point and/or humor in it? 2) I know my brain has been quarantine mush, but I remember it being a trending story sometime in the last 2-14 months that cereals were being sold in jumbo sizes so you could eat them with your hands as a snack. That counts as big news in cereal, yes?
  25. I was already with them at Poison 😂
