1. Did they actually establish that Wynn went to Fiji? I thought Raylan said "they figured" he did, which would be based on the prior dialogue about him being a surf champ.
2. Christian music runs the gamut from pop-ish to R&B influence to classic gospel, as well as rock, country, and rap. It's so broad that "the Christian vote" is a fairly ridiculous concept.
3. He sang "America." ("Kathy, I said as we boarded a Greyhound in Pittsburgh. . .")
4. This was the first dance of Noah' s that I liked. The parts that he could do were nice, and my imagination filled in the rest. Like, he had nice extension, so I didn't notice that there was no touching of hands. Or his left leg was so loose and flexible, that it made the right leg seem to sway like a foxtrot should. He does the actual content well, and my mind fills in the rest. I missed Miss Patti, and I'm kind of glad. Allison and Riker' s Paso was so frantic. It was fierce, but I feel like every dance they've done has been this same intensity. Love Willow and Mark. I love that he's willing to be absolutely BSC for her. I wish Bruno would drop the scripted OTT comments and stick to great advice like, Go to a ballet class and learn to finish your arm movements. He's insightful when he's not being ridiculous.
5. I've heard many versions of Oceans, and Deanna did not do it justice. It's not a perform to the audience song; it's an intimate conversation . Her performance lacked focus. Joshua looked and sounded exactly like Paul Simon, doing a Simon and Garfunkle song.
6. Raylan gave Arlo' s house away because he hates Arlo. That house not some great homestead; it represents abuse and hatred. He literally sees Arlo' s ghost there. Once he realized that Harlan had no more hold on him, he just gave that house away. He's like, F it, it has zero value to me. Boyd will now kill anyone standing between him and that ten million. He has always been a bad man, a stone hearted killer. Now between the smell of that money and the utter betrayal of the woman he loved (sort of loved), he has no reason not to be exactly who he is and has always been underneath the charming, surprising vocabulary and blinding smile.
7. I am firmly on the Willow/Mark train. She is so graceful and strong for a fourteen year old (which is still a gangly awkward stage), and Mark is so good at choreographing for his partner's personality now. Derek may be a better overall choreographer, but anyone could be slotted into his routines. Mark uses creativity to design a dance for his star. He did it with Sadie last season and he's on it again with Willow. He's come such a long way. I'm glad Michael went out on that dance; it was terrific. I don't remember if his dance last week was better or worse than Chris'.
8. From reading the book, I thought Jamie was doing everything he could to make sure everyone knew he wasn't placing himself in the line of succession, such as modifying the Oath at the ceremony. But Colin seemed pissed that he'd married a Sassenach and therefore would not be accepted as heir. I didn't understand that. I thought the spanking scene was handled well, but it suffered for not having the conversation afterward about his ass cashing checks that his mouth had written when he was a child, and the insight into his troubles with Randall. It really contextualizes how he saw that duty. It's just what happens when you adapt a book, especially one as detailed as this one - you lose some of the grace notes.
9. I love my Kindle for many reasons. I love the privacy of it: I could be reading LITERATURE! or re-reading an old Star Trek novel. Nobody knows. But, if I'm going to read a thick book -- like I'm reading Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin -- I want the paper book. It should be the other way around, 'cuz that book is heavy, but for some reason, I need to feel the heft of it, and gauge how much further I have to go (the percentage counter in the bottom corner doesn't do it fo me).
10. If Bruno had said, "You'll never win a Nobel Prize for quantum physics, but those shapes you're making defy gravity," then it would not have been so offensive. But her intellect had nothing to do with his point. It was unnecessary, and only served the stereotype of big boobs, must be dumb. I love me some LaBelle, but I cannot watch her dance. Noah's dancing makes me tense, and I can only watch it after the fact. Please keep constructive-criticism-Julianne. Her comments, like the one about placing your foot so you can move your hips, made so much sense, even to me.
11. I watch with my 10 year old (actually, I watch, she talks. A lot.) Neither of us knows much about dancing. But we rewound Rumer, Riker, and Willow.
12. I'm so glad that I ignored the PTV review of this show. I really liked it. I know nothing about the professional orchestra world, but I really dug the characters. Gael Garcia Bernal was terrific, crazy, gifted, kind and I love his smile. Him calling Hailey "jai-alai" never failed to make me laugh. I didn't mind the kiss at the end. I think it was more exhilaration than validation of Betty' s assumption. I'm down for a second season.
13. I had a professor who once said, "Life's too short to read bad fiction." Never forgot that.
14. Flashy, boastful, and kind of useless. Peacocks can barely fly. He was calling Ty "all hat, no cowboy." I'm catching up on this season. I laughed so hard at Whiz's demise that the kids came running upstairs to check on me. I'm a bad mother, so I rewound it (again) and showed them. It's Wynn's total lack of reaction that makes it art.
15. Okay, fair enough.
16. I did not understand why the Shark Tank guy's scores were a full point higher than the Hunger Games girl's. Was his dance that much better? I really couldn't tell that. I'm on the fence about watching this season. At least with the male pros, it's jarring to see that certain pros get partners that have no chance to make the finals at all, and probably will be first out (Keo, Tony), and some get gymnasts. Mark, who has grown on me over the years as he's matured, is kind of a wild card. I don't think his success with Sadie last season was luck; he was very restrained and thoughtful with her choreography, and it tamed the worst of his annoying tics -- and made her look good. But I would have loved to see Derek (who is a great choreographer and teacher but maybe not as much as hyped) get La Belle and see what he could do.
17. Since you asked, neither his tone nor his context raised my "this guy is racist" antenna. He wasn't complaining that the guy was black, or using it in a derogatory way, just describing the man. To me it has more to do with the fact that if you said "a person walked down the street," the default would be "white man," and everyone else gets a descriptor. That is my perspective as a person of colour, and you really don't have to agree with me.
18. They used both terms in the episode. It confused me, but I could not bring myself to Google why.
19. The Detour has some nice pros and cons. The water ride was quick and relaxing and fun, but then you had to choke down that egg. The tuk tuk was slow and frustrating and time consuming, but the snooker task was actually fairly easy if you weren't freaking out. The temple and cat cafe were even.

I wanted to reach through the tv and grab hold of Jenni, just to say, TAKE A BREATH, GIRL. I hate it when teams are so frantic and panicky they just make things worse. I want them to calm down and think things through. That said, Jenni was right to Insist that they jump in a tuk tuk and leave the other team behind. The other dude didn't hesitate to leave Jelani behind at the Roadblock, trying to figure out how to take apart the transmission. She made me laugh when Jelani was still trying to coordinate with the other team, and she's like, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
20. Respectfully, I've been a black person for more than 47 years, and I'm pretty comfortable with my ability to place comments on the racism spectrum. I just didn't think that Stan' s inclusion of Aderholt' s race was hostile, condescending, or coming from a place of power. It just was a fact, which we nowadays do notice but don't verbalize. Based on its tone I would not, personally, label it racist. I wonder, if Martha doesn't suspect Clark of being KGB - and I'm not sure there have been any clues in that direction except for the basic fact that she works in the counterintelligence unit- then what does she suspect him of? Clearly she suspects something, as she lied to him and basically challenged him to come up with an apartment. We know his life is a lie, but what on earth does she think?
21. Walter Tappett is from the Office of Professional Responsibility, or OPR, which is the Justice Department's version of Internal Affairs. OPR investigates specific instances of alleged misconduct. Clark claims to work for a secret oversight team, connected in some way with security and classified information. I think Stan referred to Aderholt as a black guy because Aderholt is a black guy. Not every mention of race is racism.
22. Great pickup, but the cop said 40 MILES, not minutes, which is worse. I can drive 40 minutes in my city and never get to the next town.Every review I've read has compared this episode to Ferguson. I think it's both hilarious and sad that people think white office shoots unarmed black man = Ferguson. There's, like, ten to choose from from just last year.

Musical Pet Peeves

I'm not a fan of LOOKATMELOOKATME runs in the Star Spangled Banner. But I love a person who pours himself or herself into that song. Marvin Gaye, Jose Feliciano - singing that song and saying, see, I'm an American, too.
24. More than A Game, the LeBron James documentary. I find it astonishing that someone happened to recognize this guy's talent at such a young age, film him, and have him live up to that potential and more. I was not a fan, really, still am not, but I was really floored by that film.
25. Mary Called Magdelene, by Margaret George. Yes, the same author who wrote some of my all-time favorites, The Autobiography of Henry VIII, Mary Queen of Scotland, etc. So when I picked up Magdelene, I was expecting so much. How can such a great author take a slice of "the greatest story ever told," tell it from the totally new point of view of one of the most interesting figures of the New Testament, and have it be so utterly boring?? I would rather read the actual King James Version of the Bible, even the books that do nothing but count people, than finish this book.
