  1. I assumed they had Giuseppe in a suit (albeit one with no shirt!) since he and Ollie were directly "competing." I guess if there had been skimpy swimwear involved, poor John would have needed to don a Speedo as well. Much as I love the man I don't think anybody wants to see that. I do love that LWT continues to provide some eye candy for the ladies (following the Diet Coke model from a few weeks ago). I like to think that somebody at LWT has a male-model casting agency on speed-dial. (BTW, that truly horrifying penis close-up from one of their early shows was the opposite of eye candy -- eye poison maybe!)
  2. Holy cow, it is NOT a good day for the Miss America Organization. From Jezebel.com: "Miss America Was Kicked Out of Her Sorority for Abusive Hazing"
  3. I was wondering if the Miss America Organization would try to refute LWT's claims -- I couldn't find anything, but do note with some amount of glee that they have 36.6K Twitter followers vs. LWT's 169K. My guess is that they'll just keep quiet & hope nobody notices. How cool that they actually did some investigative journalism regarding this accepted-at-face-value "claim." Not sure how many John Oliver fans are also Kathy Griffin fans, but I SQUEE'd out loud when Kathy showed up! Love her!!
  4. I paused the DVR when Kate was showing Riki the story on her iPad about the kid selling the puppets, and it said he was dying of "teeth cancer." I can't believe next week is the season finale already! I have really been enjoying the show and hope it gets renewed for a 2nd season. Eight episodes is a pretty short run.
  5. Not a super-famous TBD this week... 9/25: Steven Johnson (author – promoting book “How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World”)
  6. Next week's guests include Todd Barry, Jesse Joyce and Marina Franklin (Monday, September 22); Steve Rannazzisi, Jessimae Peluso and Brent Morin (Tuesday, September 23); Mary Lynn Rajskub, Steve Agee and a guest TBD (Wednesday, September 24); and Nikki Glaser, Julian McCullough and Michael Kosta (Thursday, September 25).
  7. 9/22: Jenny Nordberg (author – promoting book “The Underground Girls of Kabul: In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan”) 9/23: General Tony Zinni (former Commander in Chief of the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) & author – promoting book “Before the First Shots Are Fired: How America Can Win Or Lose Off The Battlefield”) 9/24: Tia Torres (pit bull advocate – promoting show “Pit Bulls & Parolees”) 9/25: TBD Since Bill Clinton was last week's TBD, who will next week's be?!
  8. 9/22/14 TWEEDY - Album, “Sukierae” 9/23/14 NAOMI KLEIN - Author, “This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. The Climate” 9/24/14 BILL COSBY 9/25/14 WALTER MISCHEL - Co-author, “The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control” I like the fact that the press release doesn't give an ID for Bill Cosby. It could just say, "BILL COSBY - it's f@#%ing Bill Cosby."
  9. Hey guys, remember that TBA? FORMER PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON TO APPEAR ON "THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART" THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 AT 11:00 P.M. ET/PT
  10. Jessica Chastain is no longer scheduled for this week, for some reason... 9/15: Ken Burns (filmmaker – promoting PBS documentary “The Roosevelts”) 9/16: Bill Hader (actor – promoting movie “The Skeleton Twins”) 9/17: Zephyr Teachout (Associate Professor of Law at Fordham University & author – promoting book “Corruption in America”) 9/18: TBA
  11. Next week's guests include Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll and Jon Lajoie, of the TV series "The League" (Monday, September 15); Kevin Smith, Justin Long and Jen Kirkman (Tuesday, September 16); Adam Cayton-Holland, Nate Bargatze and Beth Stelling (Wednesday, September 17); and Neal Brennan, Ali Wong and Tom Rhodes (Thursday, September 18).
  12. I'm really bummed by the news, I have to admit. I thought Che was doing a fantastic job in his short time as a correspondent. I guess SNL is a higher profile gig, but it's no TDS!
  13. I think they use TBD when they don't have the guest locked down. Several times, a TBD slot has been filled with a very high profile guest (i.e. Hillary Clinton) or someone discussing a newsworthy topic.
  14. 9/15: Ken Burns (filmmaker – promoting PBS documentary “The Roosevelts”) 9/16: Bill Hader (actor – promoting movie “The Skeleton Twins”) 9/17: TBD 9/18: Jessica Chastain (actress – promoting movie “The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby”)
  15. 9/15 MINDY KALING - “The Mindy Project,” FOX 9/16 UNLOCKING THE TRUTH - Teenage Brooklyn band 9/17 VIGGO MORTENSEN - Film, “The Two Faces Of January” 9/18 TERRY GILLIAM - Director, “The Zero Theorem”
  16. Sen. Gillibrand seemed so energetic and enthusiastic -- I can't imagine how you would not feel beaten down by the dysfunction, gridlock and need for constant fund-raising.
  17. Tonight's rerun is very, very recent -- the Thursday show with Adam Levine. I don't think there was any discussion of the Levine interview in the 9/1/14 thread, so I assume everyone else FF'd through it like I did.
  18. It's very, very rare that TDS will air without a new TCR, and vice versa. There were new TDS episodes and TCR reruns when Stephen's mother was sick and later, when she passed away. As maculae correctly pointed out, there was a new TCR (guest: Sen. Barbara Boxer) and a rerun of TDS on Feb. 6, 2006, when Jon's daughter Maggie was born. Stephen Colbert sat in when Jon's son Nathan was born a couple years earlier (July 6, 2004 episode).
  19. Well, thank goodness for this (from LWT's Twitter feed): Last Week Tonight ‏@LastWeekTonight In response to overwhelming public concern: Sunday's show WILL include a tribute to the Russian space sex geckos. #GoodbyeGeckos
  20. I haven't watched last night's ep yet -- I usually TiVo it and watch it the next day -- but I noticed that there's an extended version available. Maybe this is becoming a Thursday tradition?
  21. I have one word for you: FUNCHES. (I'm also super excited that John Hodgman will be on -- is this his first appearance?) MONDAY 9/8 • Randy Sklar @SklarBrothers • Jason Sklar @SklarBrothers • Brandon Johnson @BrandonJohnsn TUESDAY 9/9 • Jack Black @RealTenaciousD • Kyle Gass @GassLeak • Margaret Cho @margaretcho WEDNESDAY 9/10 • Rory Scovel @roryscovel • Arden Myrin @ArdenMyrin • Ron Funches @RonFunches THURSDAY 9/11 • John Hodgman @hodgman • Greg Proops @GregProops • Paul F. Tompkins @PFTompkins
  22. It's pretty rare, I think, for Jon to SAY something about a departed celebrity, but I love the MoZ tributes. They usually manage to hit just the right note of being respectful without being maudlin.
