  1. Sigh. They rescheduled Papa Bear. 10/13: Matt Bai (author – promoting book “All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid”) 10/14: Zach Galifianakis (actor – promoting movie “Birdman”) 10/15: Bill O’Reilly (host of “The O’Reilly Factor” & author – promoting book “Killing Patton”) 10/16: Bryan Stevenson (author – promoting book “Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption”)
  2. 10/13 WALTER ISAACSON - Author, “The Innovators: How a Group of Hackers, Geniuses, and Geeks Created the Digital Revolution” 10/14 NEIL YOUNG - Author, “Special Deluxe: A Memoir of Life & Cars” 10/15 JUSTIN SIMIEN - Director, “Dear White People” 10/16 BILL DERESIEWICZ - Author, “Excellent Sheep; The Miseducation of The American Elite & The way to a Meaningful Life”
  3. I think it's also been proven pretty conclusively that they don't just "riff answers"; some of the material is pre-written by the show's writers and the participating comedians. Which is OK with me, since it would be tough for most folks, even quick-witted comics, to come up with a steady stream of hilarious off-the-cuff responses.
  4. Pretty sure Wyatt left the show voluntarily. And he's got a busy stand-up career -- he's got a few dates in San Francisco coming up later this month -- so I think he's keeping active. I have to admit I'd rather watch Jason & Sam interview Wyatt Cenac than Jon interviewing smarmy ol' O'Reilly any time. Tomorrow's scheduled guest is Leon Panetta -- I don't think any of the four current correspondents have the gravitas to do a good job interviewing him. If Jon's still ill, perhaps John Oliver could swing by and substitute for Panetta (hey, LWT is dark this week!).
  5. You're in luck!! I just got an email from TDS and BillO has been replaced on tonight's show by -- hallelujah! -- Wyatt Cenac. I have no idea why we have been so blessed, but I'm delighted. I'm sure many of you will be as well.
  6. The extended version of Thursday's show on the web site was almost 40 minutes long. Definitely worth watching.
  7. Next week's guests include Dan Levy, Alice Wetterlund and Baron Vaughn (Monday, October 6); Maria Bamford, Eddie Pepitone and James Adomian (Tuesday, October 7); Grace Helbig, Henry Zebrowski and Matt Mira (Wednesday, October 8); and T.J. Miller, Cash Levy and Sara Schaefer (Thursday, October 9).
  8. Oh Jon, why do you have to keep giving airtime to BillO and allowing him to promote yet another one of the books in his "Killing" franchise? Sigh. 10/6: Atul Gawande (author – promoting book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End”) 10/7: Bill O’Reilly (host of “The O’Reilly Factor” & author – promoting book “Killing Patton”) 10/8: Leon Panetta (former Secretary of Defense & author – promoting book “Worthy Fights: A Memoir of Leadership in War and Peace”) 10/9: Jeremy Renner (actor – promoting movie “Kill The Messenger”)
  9. 10/6/14 JAMES MCPHERSON - Author, “Embattled Rebel: Jefferson Davis as Commander in Chief” 10/7/14 LEON WIESELTIER - 100th Anniversary of The New Republic & book, “Insurrections of the Mind: 100 Years of Politics and Culture in America” 10/8/14 CAROL BURNETT - Broadway show, “Love Letters” 10/9/14 ROBERT PLANT - Album, “Lullaby And The Ceaseless Roar”
  10. I think this was posted here the last time Hans appeared on the show, but I just love this photo of the guy who plays Hans looking so un-Hans-like. (He's a guitarist/folk musician in real life!) Maybe he could be the Larry "Bud" Melman of Stephen's "Late Show." (A little reference for any of you old school Letterman fans.)
  11. 20 Things You Learn Hanging Out With John Oliver From his teenage girl troubles to a near-fight with an Ali G impersonator, here's what didn't fit into his first Rolling Stone cover story
  12. You need to borrow a friend's HBO Go password and watch all 30 minutes sometime, Fremde Frau, just to see what the experience is like vs. watching the clips! Personally, I'm very glad my husband became addicted to "Game of Thrones" and made us splash out for the HBO subscription so we can watch the full show (though it's nice that they put so much up on YouTube). I think the tone of LWT often veers closer to "righteous indignation" than ha-ha comedy. But some topics are definitely more serious than others -- I mean, Miss America was much sillier. If they covered stuff like drones every week, it might be a bit too heavy.
  13. Thursday's 3rd guest will be Emily Heller -- delighted to see her again on @M, as she's one of my favorite comedians.
  14. John Oliver will be the lead guest on "Late Show with David Letterman" tomorrow (Tuesday the 30th), replacing Rosie O'Donnell. Not sure why she won't be appearing, but hey, John Oliver should be way more entertaining!
  15. You and me both, dusang! I wondered if that was coincidence or a way of paying tribute to his old gig. Che also turned up in a sketch later in the show (an NFL bit that was a pretty blatant rip-off of Key & Peele's "East West Bowl") so he may get to move beyond the WU desk from time to time.
  16. I think LWT mentioned Modi's being barred from entering the U.S. during its coverage of the Indian election, but I couldn't remember exactly what had happened either. Here's a story from Time.com which talks about that as well as the Madison Square Garden rally. My boyfriend in college was super into Ayn Rand. I think it's excusable to go through an Ayn Rand phase when you're 19. And yet, Americans who read "The Hunger Games" or "Twilight" are shamed in some quarters, while grown-ass men in positions of power like Ted Cruz and Paul Ryan can go around praising Rand and still be considered Serious Republicans (and, in Ryan's case, "the intellectual leader of the Republican Party"). The LWT clip needs to rack up about a million more views.
  17. The "kazoo parade" bit made me laugh louder than I have in a while. This was really a great episode all around -- sweet, funny, dirty, poignant.
  18. New 9/29 guest: Hadi al Bahra (President of the Syrian National Coalition)
  19. MONDAY 9/29 • Doug Benson @DougBenson • Hari Kondabolu @harikondabolu • Kyle Kinane @kylekinane TUESDAY 9/30 • Adam Newman @Adam_Newman • Mike Lawrence @TheMikeLawrence • Heather Anne Campbell @heathercampbell WEDNESDAY 10/1 • Tom Lennon @thomaslennon • Cameron Esposito @cameronesposito • Daniel Sloss @Daniel_Sloss THURSDAY 10/2 • Tim Minchin @timminchin • Rhys Darby @rhysiedarby
  20. This is the season finale. No word yet on whether there will be a Season 2.
  21. This warms my heart: John Oliver’s takedown of Miss America boosts donations to women’s scholarships
  22. 9/29 JAMIE OLIVER - Author, “Comfort Food” 9/30 JEFFREY TAMBOR - “Transparent” Amazon Prime 10/1 ADMIRAL MIKE MULLEN - Retired US Navy Admiral, served as the 17th chairman of The Joint Chiefs of Staff and the 28th Chief of Naval Operations 10/2 LYNN SHERR - Author, “SALLY RIDE: America’s First Woman in Space”
  23. 9/29: Matt Bai (author – promoting book “All the Truth Is Out: The Week Politics Went Tabloid”) 9/30: Ben Affleck (actor & director – promoting movie “Gone Girl”) 10/1: Lena Dunham (actress & author – promoting book “Not That Kind of Girl”) 10/2: Ben Steele (filmmaker – promoting documentary “Hunted: The War Against Gays in Russia”)
  24. The whole right wing meme that scientists are only writing about global warming to make big $$$ is so tiresome. I'm glad Jon took that on, pointing out that there would be WAY more cash to be made by getting in bed with the Koch Brothers and Big Oil.
  25. I would amend the Miss America Pageant statement to, "We are the largest provider of scholarships to thin, conventionally attractive women." When I was in high school it would never have occurred to me to apply for a scholarship from them because it would have meant losing 20 pounds, getting veneers, and mastering the art of butt glue. Plus the whole "I swear I've never been pregnant" seems code for "we would greatly prefer virgins, but we realize we can't come right out and say that."
