  1. For the record: I don't believe Joan Rivers ever appeared on TDS. She was a guest on TCR in 2012.
  2. I just found out that next Thursday's guest description: 9/11: Tavis Smiley (host of PBS’s “Tavis Smiley” & author – promoting book “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Final Year”) could be amended. Not only is Tavis a host and author, but he's been cast on the new season of "Dancing with the Stars." I really, really hope Jon asks him about that!
  3. Another all-dude lineup. BTW, if you also watch "The Daily Show," be aware that Monday's TDS will be a rerun (Jon is going to be promoting his film in Toronto) but TCR is brand-new. 9/8/14 JOHN LITHGOW - Film, “Love is Strange” 9/9/14 JASON SEGEL - Author, “Nightmares!” 9/10/14 HENRY KISSINGER - Author, “World Order” 9/11/14 LONN TAYLOR - Co-author, “The Star-Spangled Banner: The Making of an American Icon”
  4. I had assumed that TCR would also be off, since it's extremely rare that they operate on different schedules, but thankfully I was wrong. TDS will be a rerun on Monday, but TCR will be brand-new. So at least there's that to look forward to. I kinda wish that Jon would have put one of the correspondents in the host chair, but maybe he's afraid they'll do so well that they'd be snapped up by some other outlet!
  5. It's another arduous three day work week at TDS (anyone know why they're taking ANOTHER Monday off?): 9/8: DARK! 9/9: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY & author – promoting book “Off the Sidelines: Raise Your Voice, Change the World” 9/10: Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon (Secretary-General of the United Nations) 9/11: Tavis Smiley (host of PBS’s “Tavis Smiley” & author – promoting book “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Final Year”)
  6. Jason also hosts the new episode of the Daily Show Podcast Without Jon Stewart, which features writer Zhubin Parang, field producer Brennan Shroff and senior researcher Adam Chodikoff.
  7. Another web exclusive; new shows return next week.
  8. David Letterman has for YEARS featured comics like Jeff Altman and J.J. Walker on his show, long after their careers cooled. I think it's a pretty nice gesture when you can give a bit of a boost to someone who needs it. I'm sure Todd Glass's book got a significant sales bump after his appearance on TDS.
  9. Chris is scheduled to be a guest on "Conan" this coming Thursday, Sept. 4.
  10. The ep with Drew Carey was one of the funniest I've ever seen. There's an extended version up on the @Midnight web site with about 10 minutes of extra material -- I highly recommend it.
  11. He was on the show to promote his book, and that's what it's about: "A hilarious, poignant memoir from comedian Todd Glass about his decision at age forty-eight to finally live openly as a gay man—and the reactions and support from his comedy pals... a deeply personal story about one man’s search for acceptance." I first heard of Glass when he appeared on "Last Comic Standing" a few years back. He finished in the Top 10 on Seasons 2 & 3.
  12. Azaelia, the show got very good ratings in Sweden, though they did decline toward the end of the run. It originally aired on Fridays, which believe it or not is the prime viewing night for Swedes; almost all Swedes traditionally stay home and have family time on Friday nights. It was shifted to a different night because of the network's previous commitment to air soccer matches on Friday nights. As in the U.S., moving a show around is usually a guarantee of losing audience. The reviews were mostly negative. It got way, way better reviews in the U.S. (Metacritic link). As I mentioned in the "on the media" topic, Greg feuded with a prominent critic and wound up totally embarrassing himself when it was found that he was the one who had posted "anonymous" comments on a negative review. I was just saying to my husband this morning that Amy probably went into P&R with 20 years' experience in comedy and improv (Upright Citizens Brigade, SNL, etc.) whereas Greg is a total rookie. He's so outclassed by the other actors. I really enjoyed the scenes that took place in Sweden in the last two eps when he wasn't around!
  13. I just checked next week's listings, and there's a primetime NFL game (Packers at Seahawks) airing on NBC next Thursday. It's the first regular season game of the year and will no doubt get blockbuster ratings (unlike "Sweden"). No wonder they wanted to clear their Thursday calendar.
  14. The reason I found the lack of a Robin Williams tribute particularly odd is because Robin co-starred with Jon in "Death to Smoochy." And he's appeared on the show several times since then, so it's not like there was any animosity there. (I actually think "Smoochy" is a highly underrated film.) I was never a huge Williams fan--he was always a little too over-the-top for me in his talk show appearances, though I do think he did superb work in some of his more understated roles ("Good Will Hunting," for example)--but I agree with LADreamr, it would have been nice to have acknowledge him somehow. Jon didn't need to eulogize him; a MoZ with a clip from one of his TDS appearances, as they have done for David Rakoff and other guests who passed away, would have been appropriate and sufficient.
  15. Well, NBC supposedly renewed the show, but they're burning off the last two episodes tonight and didn't even broadcast the rather pivotal episode #8 -- just threw it up on the webby-web, to quote Jon Stewart. Here is a link. I suggest everyone watch it if for no other reason that you will stand up and cheer when you hear what Birger says to Bruce near the end of the episode. Though the fact that Bruce defends "Tootsie" so vigorously does win him points in my book; that is an awesome movie.
  16. maculae, my guess is that Jon's presentations at Telluride & TIFF were scheduled around his TDS duties. Thanks to Labor Day, he has an extra day to spend in Colorado, but Toronto is only a little over an hour's flight from NY, so my guess is that he'll fly home after his Mavericks talk and be back in the host chair on the 8th. Plus, the guy makes $25 million a year (according to the Hollywood Reporter article), I'm sure he doesn't have to fly commercial!
  17. fastiller, every week when I see the listings, the first thing I do is scan for Funches! I hope they have him back on soon.
  18. Check out the listings for the Sept. 2 episode of "Late Night with Seth Meyers"! Tuesday, September 2: Guests Stephen Colbert, Amy Sedaris and Matthew Berry. Show 0089.
  19. Next week's guests include Jon Daly, Nicole Byer and David Koechner (Tuesday, September 2); Brett Gelman, Rich Fulcher and Horatio Sanz (Wednesday, September 3); and Jim Jefferies, Chris D'Elia and Whitney Cummings (Thursday, September 4). "@midnight" is dark Monday, September 1. I'm sure Chris is bummed that he has to take another day off, since he seems to hate them, or at least he pretends to...
  20. Speaking of female guests... it's always nice to see DKG on the Report! 9/1 DARK 9/2 MANDY PATINKIN - “Homeland” Showtime 9/3 RANDALL MUNROE - Author, “What If?: Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions” 9/4 DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN - Author, “The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism” paperback edition
  21. Agreed - next week's guests are 2/3 female (Ramita Navai & Rory Kennedy). And I think the correspondent thing is irrelevant today, because to say they "only" have two female correspondents, well, as maculae pointed out, there are only five "active" correspondents at this point. I wouldn't really count the folks like Hodgman, Lewis Black, etc. since they only show up occasionally. The guest situation is much more dire on "Colbert." That would be my theory -- kind of like Bill Maher frequently has guests on to talk about environmental issues, 'cause he's interested in that personally. It's one of the pluses of having your own TV show. And it's hard to argue that the Middle East is not newsworthy.
  22. I've been waiting for somebody to write this piece for YEARS. I, and other viewers, have been complaining about this very thing for a long, long time in the TWoP forum and now here. Of course, the comments on the Reuters piece are a textbook example of why one shouldn't read the comments. "Or maybe more women could actually do something worthwhile to warrant an invitation instead of crying and begging for reservations?" Obviously a lot of people are going to reflexively jump in and defend Colbert, but I am the biggest Colbert fan around, I have watched almost every single episode of TCR since it began, but this is truly a case where I wish they'd something about it a long time ago.
  23. There was some question in another thread about whether TDS would take Labor Day off so soon after their long break. Well, guess what -- they're taking Labor Day off. 9/1: DARK! 9/2: Ramita Navai (author – promoting book “City of Lies: Love, Sex, Death, and the Search for Truth in Tehran”) 9/3: Rory Kennedy (filmmaker – promoting documentary “Last Days in Vietnam”) 9/4: Adam Levine (lead singer of Maroon 5 – promoting new album “V”) Adam Levine?!
  24. I think Rep. Fudge was a textbook example of how to behave on BKAD. She took everything in stride and responded to Stephen's insanity with good humor. The fencing bit was fun, as well. At first I was bummed to see that the show had been in the can for a couple of weeks, but I wound up being happy that she got two segments! It made me hope that somehow Stephen can continue his 434-part series on "Late Show"... though congressional representatives will probably be replaced by the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Howie Mandel. Sigh.
  25. Yeah, it was an uncharacteristically lame bit from Stephen. At least we'll probably get a good "Who's Honoring Me Now" bit on tonight's show.
