  1. I'm sure Jon & co. would be giving heavy coverage to Ferguson this week... it will probably be a long-lasting story that they will be able to cover on Monday without seeming too dated. For a second, I thought, "Well, John Oliver will have the first take on Sunday!" and then I remembered he's on hiatus 'til February! Sigh.
  2. The annual turkey pardon has always struck me as an exceptionally stupid tradition, so I'm glad to see John agrees with me:
  3. I checked the point totals carefully, and Aimee was responding (and getting points), but they weren't showing her answers. She got up to 400 points, I think, before they showed a response from her. And that was on the extended version -- I thought it was going to be "uncut," but I guess they still edit it, just not as much (I think it was about 33 minutes long, compared with 21-22 for the televised version). I have seen Aimee live in concert many times, most recently on The Both tour with Ted Leo, and she is hilarious onstage, but her sense of humor is very dry and understated. I agree that @M is not the best setting for her talents. I highly recommend seeing her live if you get the chance.
  4. A bunch of TBAs, but here are some of the upcoming guests. I'm glad to see Paul F. has been rescheduled. 11/24/14 Tom Lennon, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Ben Garant (R 11/13/14) 11/25/14 Jim Gaffigan, Michael Ian Black, Kyle Kinane (R 11/4/14) 11/26/14 Pete Holmes, Ron Funches, Steve Rannazzisi (R 11/19/14) 11/27/14 Pre-empted 12/1/14 Dave Hill, Morgan Murphy 12/2/14 Tom Rhodes, Greg Proops, W. Kamau Bell 12/3/14 Jon Daly, Arden Myrin, Matt Besser 12/4/14 Chris D'Elia, Brent Morin 12/8/14 Paul F. Tompkins, Brandon Johnson 12/9/14 Jim Jefferies, Rhys Darby 12/10/14 Judah Friedlander 12/11/14 Doug Benson 12/15/14 TBA 12/16/14 Kevin Pereira, Wil Wheaton 12/17/14 Alice Wetterlund, Mike Lawrence
  5. Interestingly, Jon's old pal Sen. John McCain will be appearing on "Colbert" the same night Napolitano is on TDS.
  6. It does make kind of a nice symmetry, though... "The Daily Show" / "The Nightly Show." Ties the two even closer together. It'll be interesting to see how it does in the ratings after Colbert takes over "Late Show" -- I don't think it's been announced when exactly that will be. Perhaps not until Fall 2015. Despite Jon's love for Stephen, I'm sure he'll do everything he can to make "TDS" + "TNS" into a package deal for viewers so they don't switch over to CBS at 11:30.
  7. 12/1/14 SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN - Co-author, “Thirteen Soldiers: A Personal History of Americans at War” 12/2/14 TONY BENNETT & LADY GAGA - Album, “Cheek to Cheek” 12/3/14 CHRISTOPHER NOLAN - Director, “Interstellar” 12/4/14 DR. PAUL FARMER - Physician, humanitarian, & co-founder of Partners In Health
  8. Here's why 'The Daily Show' got it wrong on Detroit water shutoffs
  9. 12/1: Judge Andrew Napolitano (Senior Judicial Analyst for Fox News Channel & author – promoting book “Suicide Pact”) 12/2: Dave Grohl (musician & director – promoting new Foo Fighters album & HBO series “Foo Fighters: Sonic Highways”) 12/3: Sophie Delaunay (executive director of Doctors Without Borders) 12/4: Angelina Jolie (actress & director – promoting movie “Unbroken”)
  10. This is slightly off topic but I thought some folks here would be interested in reading the latest scoop on "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore" (formerly known as "The Minority Report"). Latest plan is for the show to debut on Jan. 19. My guess is that the "TDS" holiday break will be the last 2 weeks of December (last show of 2014 Dec. 18, first show of 2015 Jan. 5). No idea what will air in the post-TDS slot before TNSwLW debuts. Also: the latest TDS podcast is out, and while I haven't listened to it yet, it sounds good: I hope they mention Jon's loathing of the practice of eating pizza with a fork!
  11. I was wondering if Jon doesn't like Pelosi personally and that was the catalyst for that segment. He certainly seems to have been frustrated by her non-answers during her guest appearances on the show.
  12. Our moderator will need to change the title of this forum, 'cause it's no longer titled "The Minority Report" (apparently the producers of the Tom Cruise movie are doing a TV pilot based on the film). It's now "The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore" and is set to debut Jan. 19. Lots more info in this NY Times article.
  13. Here's a really good piece about LWT from the New York Times. I like that the writer admits right up front that he was wrong:
  14. Don't think it's gonna happen that soon, Victor the Crab. Remember, Jon owns a piece of "The Minority Report," and has an interest in wanting it to succeed. (Not to imply that he's solely motivated by money, but the fact that it's a Busboy Production gives him more of a stake -- financial and emotional -- than if it were just another Comedy Central show.) He's going to make sure that baby has left the nest and flown like Stephen Jr. (there's a reference for you long-time Colbert fans) before making any announcements.
  15. Here's a preview of a field piece scheduled to run sometime during this week. No word on which correspondent reported the story.
  16. I'm pretty sure all three DO advance in case of a tie. If they want to get rid of the elimination/red light and always have all three advance, fine; change the rules. But "breaking the rules," as long as it IS a rule, should be an occasional thing, not a 3-times-a-week thing. (And yes, I realize I'm overthinking this. I'd be perfectly happy if they officially changed it to eliminate the elimination, so to speak.)
  17. No way would Jon leave TDS until "The Minority Report" is well established. As with "Colbert," it will take some time for it to succeed on its own terms (I trust that it will indeed succeed, because Larry Wilmore is a ridiculously talented guy). It wouldn't surprise me to see the return of the toss, this time with Larry, to persuade folks to stay tuned in. The big question is, will he stick around for the 2016 elections. It would be the fifth presidential election cycle he's covered and that must be a particularly tough gig. Though considering the high ratings TDS usually scores in election years, CC might back up the money truck and persuade him to stick around for one more.
  18. I never watched "Reno 911" but I enjoyed the episode. I watched the extended, uncensored version -- all 50 minutes of it! -- and laughed a lot. I figured Chris wouldn't let Kerry Kenney-Silver, uh, Deputy Wiegel, go, but I agree that letting all 3 contestants stay should be a very rare thing, otherwise it's not special/surprising. It was sort of funny on Wed. night when the guy from Birthday Boys pleaded with Chris to let him stay and Chris refused. He was the only "loser" all week who didn't get to stick around for FTW.
  19. Loved Bahari's response, though: "You're one to talk!" (to John Oliver).
  20. A few updates to the upcoming-guest list. Unfortunately, no more Paul F. Tompkins -- maybe he had a conflict and had to drop out. Hopefully he'll be rescheduled soon. Mo 11/17: Moshe Kasher, Natasha Leggero, Jerry Minor Tu 11/18: Keegan-Michael Key, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel We 11/19: Pete Holmes, Ron Funches, Steve Rannazzisi Th 11/20: Nick Offerman, Aimee Mann, Dana Gould 11/24-27: Reruns Mo 12/1: Dave Hill, Morgan Murphy Tu 12/2: Tom Rhodes, Greg Proops, W. Kamau Bell We 12/3: TBA Th 12/4: Chris D'Elia, Brent Morin
  21. In case anyone cares: "The Soup" is moving back to Friday nights.
  22. John Oliver Is Outdoing The Daily Show and Colbert By Matt Zoller Seitz (Vulture.com) Not that I agree with everything in this piece... but it's an interesting read.
  23. Jon will be a guest on "Fresh Air" today - it'll be available to listen to here sometime Thursday evening. Even if you have Jon Stewart Interview Fatigue, this should be a good one, since Terry Gross is a huge TDS/TCR fan and will no doubt ask some questions that haven't already been asked a bazillion times.
  24. The elephant segment seemed like the sort of thing "Last Week Tonight" would do. Good on TDS for bringing it to light, though it was hella depressing. Personally, I wish Comedy Central would stop bleeping "shit" on the initial airings of TDS. They're allowed to say it on "South Park," which airs an hour earlier. They could bleep it for TDS reruns earlier in the day.
