  1. When I see the young blonde Fox newsbabes on TDS I always wonder what will happen to them in 10-15 years -- I'm reminded of the title of Christine Craft's memoir about age discrimination in the news biz, "Too Old, Too Ugly, and Not Deferential to Men." Eventually Megyn and Elizabeth Hasselback will be swept aside for newer, hotter models, while the likes of Bill O'Reilly and Sean Hannity will be allowed to continue on indefinitely. I mean, Charles Krauthammer turns up reliably on TDS in those Fox segments and he looks positively troll-like (I was surprised to note that he was only 65 -- I would've guessed closer to 80). I realize there is the occasional older woman on Fox (Greta Van Susteren springs to mind) but the attractive young blondes seem so prevalent in their coverage that I can't imagine Fox won't want to restock their supply every so often. Gretchen Carlson seems to have a much lower profile on the network now that she's close to 50.
  2. lordonia, they usually post the top 10 Hashtag Wars responses on their Tumblr page. It's funny, when the #PointsMe thing was announced, I mentioned to my husband that I sort of hoped they would pick a stand-up comedian who needed a break to put on the show because I felt that would guarantee they got someone who already had some stage presence. Even though Cubas has been on DLM, he's probably someone who was not on the @M guest bookers' radar (particularly since he lives in Austin) and I suspect he was unfamiliar to the vast majority of the viewing audience. He did a great job and hopefully they'll have him back on @M someday.
  3. It's coming back to NBC in July. WtS will start airing its 2nd season in Sweden on April 1.
  4. 4/6: Gene Baur (author – promoting book “Living the Farm Sanctuary Life: The Ultimate Guide to Eating Mindfully, Living Longer, and Feeling Better Every Day”) 4/7: Peter Dinklage (actor – promoting “Game of Thrones”) 4/8: Tavis Smiley (host of PBS’s “Tavis Smiley” & author – promoting book “My Journey with Maya”) 4/9: Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA & author – promoting paperback of “A Fighting Chance”)
  5. Maybe it's a California thing? We have that too, up here in Northern CA. I've worked with lots of people doing community service at a couple local organizations, and some of them have enjoyed it so much that they've become regular volunteers. It's not always easy -- for a while, I did a Meals on Wheels route with a nurse who came directly from her night shift -- but for people who are living paycheck to paycheck, I'm sure it's far preferable to paying an onerous fine or going into a never-ending cycle of debt. Of course, there's no profit for private companies (or municipalities dependent on the money they get from fines) when people are working off their penalties by stocking shelves at a food bank, so I can see why this isn't an option everywhere.
  6. I was hoping Jon would mention that the Liberty students would have faced a $10 fine for not showing up to Ted's campaign kick-off (along with "four reprimands").
  7. THANK YOU, Ted Cruz. Thank you for announcing your run for the presidency today and not next Monday, when TDS will be dark. Truly you have given us all (the fans, as well as the writers, of TDS) a gift... of comedy.
  8. I love Trevor Noah but he has such a successful international stand-up career, I wonder if he'd want to "settle down" on TDS. Then again, he seems to be a much bigger star in other countries (he's currently playing Dubai, according to his Twitter feed) -- maybe he'd like to raise his American profile.
  9. Just a quick heads up, "Girls" and "Looking" are both running long tonight, so LWT will air from 11:15-11:45. Edited to add: According to their Twitter feed, LWT will be off next week (March 29). Everyone should still watch HBO that night so they can see "Going Clear"!
  10. No, but Robin Ince turned up on the L.A.-based quiz-show podcast International Waters right around that time... and I'd venture that International Waters, as much as I personally enjoy it, is a much more obscure venue than @M, so the TV appearance must have fallen through for some reason. Ince announced that he was on his way to Australia, so I would imagine their @M gig is not gonna happen, sadly.
  11. On Wednesday the #PointsMe winner (still unnamed) will be going up against Steve Agee and Tom Lennon. I hope the winner brings his or her A-game! Mo 3/23: Kyle Kinane, Rhys Darby, Vanessa Ramos Tu 3/24: Fortune Feimster, Ben Gleib, Moshe Kasher We 3/25: Steve Agee, Tom Lennon, #PointsMe winner Th 3/26: Natasha Leggero, Jeff Ross, Sarah Tiana The show will be in reruns the following week.
  12. This Gawker article is chock full of speculation, anonymous sources, etc.
  13. 3/23: Ayaan Hirsi Ali (author – promoting book “Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now”) 3/24: Jon Ronson (author – promoting book “So You've Been Publicly Shamed”) 3/25: Kirby Dick & Amy Ziering (filmmakers – promoting documentary “The Hunting Ground”) 3/26: John Hargrove (author – promoting book “Beneath the Surface: Killer Whales, SeaWorld, and the Truth Beyond Blackfish”) Week of 3/30: DARK! A note about John Hargrove: I hadn't heard of his book, but based on the blurbs, it sounds interesting. Here's one: "The thin veneer of SeaWorld's fantasy that the orca are happy in their tanks is peeled back in this mesmerizing and compelling book about Hargrove's work as a trainer and his journey to become one of the few speaking out against the cruelty being conducted even to this day." (Ingrid N. Visser, researcher and founder of the Orca Research Trust) "Hargrove takes us inside his life as a former SeaWorld devotee, his 14 years as an orca trainer, and especially his deep respect and affection for the orcas he has worked with. No short phrases can adequately summarize the personalities and idiosyncrasies of the 20 orcas he performed with and cared for, but this book gives us great insight into their piercing intelligence and keen awareness. Perhaps most interestingly, Hargrove reveals the complex emotional lives of the orcas he came to know, and how they brought out his own feelings toward them." (Howard Garrett, Director, The Orca Network)
  14. My husband, who is a huge basketball fan, related a few Nick Young facts: 1) He's dating Iggy Azalea 2) He dubbed himself "Swaggy P" 3) He is injured and hasn't been playing lately, which might explain why he had time to go on "The Soup." Following his appearance, we both agreed that Nick won't be asked to host SNL anytime soon.
  15. I remember Larry mentioning a couple of weeks ago that he was going through a divorce, and now every time he says something "jokingly" critical of women, I wonder if it's related to that. I'm not saying it's right or justified, but a lot of men seem to develop some hostility toward women when they're getting divorced. (Off-topic, but since "Totally Biased" occasionally comes up in this forum: I was really glad to see that W. Kamau Bell got a new show. It sounds nothing like "Totally Biased" but I'm sure it will be worth watching.)
  16. Mo 3/16: Alice Wetterlund, Jesse Joyce, Ricky Velez Tu 3/17: Paul Scheer, April Richardson, Sean Patton We 3/18: Ron Funches, Rick Glassman, Bianca Kajlich Th 3/19: Rob Huebel, Erinn Hayes, David Wain Mo 3/23: Kyle Kinane, Rhys Darby Tu 3/24: Fortune Feimster, Ben Gleib, Moshe Kasher We 3/25: Steve Agee Th 3/26: Natasha Leggero, Jeff Ross
  17. 3/16: Andrew Cockburn (author – promoting book “Kill Chain: The Rise of the High-Tech Assassins”) 3/17: Amanda Seyfried (actress – promoting movie “While We’re Young”) 3/18: Kevin Hart (actor – promoting movie “Get Hard”) 3/19: Will Ferrell (actor – promoting movie “Get Hard”)
  18. I realize this topic is dormant, but I just wanted to pop in and say that I still miss Stephen so much -- I've been watching "The Nightly Show," and sometimes it strikes me that it's being filmed in the old Colbert studio, and it makes me sad ("TNS" is OK, but it's no "TCR"). I'm really looking forward to the new "Late Show"...
  19. The first two segments of the Ferguson show were great. I laughed a lot (some of it was uncomfortable laughter, granted). The panel WAS more rushed than usual... if he had just had a couple people, I think it would have worked better in that short period of time. I realized after watching the marijuana episode that one of the reasons I thought the panel worked was because there was no anti-drug zealot on there!! I don't think everybody was necessarily PRO-marijuana, but to me, it showed that you can have a good, informative panel without necessarily having to present "on the one hand, on the other hand." The "stoned, drunk or sober" bit was also funny.
  20. I forgot that Conan is already on TBS. I don't watch it all that often since it's on opposite TDS. I'd be very curious to know the behind-the-scenes scoop on this... like, did Sam put out feelers whether or not she'd get the TDS gig after Jon leaves, or did she just want to start over with something new. Perhaps she assumed that following Jon will be a truly fraught job and it was better to just go into a different situation. It sounds like TBS is all in with the Jones/Bee duo.
  21. A show featuring Sam's take on "current and relevant issues"? I wonder if TBS will be airing it at 11 PM to compete with a Jon-less TDS?
  22. 3/9: Rep. John Lewis (Congressman, Georgia's Fifth Congressional District & co-author of “March”) 3/10: Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer (promoting “Broad City”) 3/11: Common (hip hop artist & actor – promoting movie “Run All Night”) 3/12: Rob Corddry (promoting “Children’s Hospital”)
  23. OMG a show with no panel!!! When DiBlasio was announced, I was afraid it was going to be him, two comedians and a conservative who is nostalgic for the Giuliani administration. I had no problem watching this ep all the way through, and thought Larry did quite a good job as an interviewer.
  24. A few of next week's slots are still TBA, but I'm particularly excited about 3/11/15's all-British show (with Eric Idle!!!). Mo 3/2: Doug Benson, Jen Kirkman, Baratunde Thurston Tu 3/3: Kevin Smith We 3/4: Neal Brennan, Bryan Callen Th 3/5: Trevor Moore, Nick Thune, Heather Anne Campbell Mo 3/9: Rhys Darby, Mamrie Hart Tu 3/10: Mark Normand, Seth Herzog, Nikki Glaser We 3/11: Eric Idle, Brian Cox, Robin Ince Th 3/12: TBA Mo 3/16: TBA Tu 3/17: Paul Scheer, April Richardson, Sean Patton We 3/18: Ron Funches, Rick Glassman Th 3/19: Rob Huebel, Malin Akerman, Erinn Hayes
  25. I wonder if they tried to get Neil DeGrasse Tyson (who was mentioned in Larry's intro)? I would have preferred a longer one-on-one with the panelist who has applied to go to Mars. Though I guess I should stop complaining about the four-person panel format since it's obvious they're planning to stick with it come hell or high water.
