I had Lasik surgery in the hopes that afterwards, glasses would be able to correct my vision to 20/20. No such luck, though with glasses I'm now at about 20/40, and can walk around without glasses with no fear of bumping into things, falling off ledges, or walking into traffic. So I can fully understand why someone would have trouble with any task that required being able to see detail at a distance. (Though I still don't understand why none of the racers seemed to try to improve their angle by standing at the edges of the stone rectangle.) I also think it was unfair that only one door required that the doorknob be painted. (Even though that has nothing to do with glasses, and had nothing to do with the final outcome.)

Well now I'm going to have nightmares about the Weavers. Which is not a suitable replacement for the nightmares about flipping rocks for hours.

I spent some time in a small town (that thought it was a big town) and will never forget a story in the local newspaper. It was a "man on the street" interview, and the topic was "What does A*** City need more than anything?" Five of the six people said "A really nice restaurant." Four of the five specified "...like a Red Lobster." EDIT: Come to think of it, they actually specified "...like a Captain D's!"

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers - General Discussion
Lakebum replied to jewel21's topic in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers
His dad and his uncle both played in the NHL. His uncle was the more accomplished player (almost 700 games) and his dad has had a long coaching career that is still going on. Dylan (Coach T) also plays a hockey player in the cult comedy series Letterkenny... but you probably shouldn't let your kids watch! :-) -
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers - General Discussion

I have friends who started dating in junior high, and got married right after college; that was 1984, and they're still together. (The funny thing was, I knew HER in elementary school. I met HIM in college, when he transferred in after spending his first year at another school. One day the girlfriend he left there came down to visit; she walked in, we both let out a yell, and hugged. He said "You know each other?" and she said "Baby, I've known him for longer than I've known you!" Back to the show: very enjoyable, when I accept it for what it is. BUT sometimes, the hockey is BAD. Not just "actors pretending to be hockey players" bad, but "have the writers ever actually seen a hockey game?" bad. (That's not a new thing with The Mighty Ducks; the "triple deke" thing from D2 still makes me cringe.) I liked all of the kids, though, and I would watch a second season. -
All in all a good show, BUT... couldn't they have done at least a smidge of research on what it takes to go to Antarctica? Some of the terms they used in conjunction with Sam's Antarctic dreams don't go together: "study abroad" and "find a place to stay" brought actual guffaws. The program Sam was going to use to travel to Antarctica is loosely based on the NSF's Artists and Writers Program. But it's not "study abroad;" professional artists/writers/musicians come up with detailed proposals, and have to "make the cut" several times before a very few are chosen. My wife was one of those artists, and she WAS chosen; she was one of TWO that year. And later (three times) she served on the committee to choose participants. And you don't "find a place to stay" in Antarctica. There are no hotels, no hostels, no bed-and-breakfasts... there are research stations. That's it. You don't book a room, you are assigned one of the stations (in the USA, that would be Palmer Station and the much larger McMurdo Station.) These are government facilities with very strict rules and regulations; it's very much like being on the International Space Station. (Especially Palmer, which has room for about 47 people, and no more.) I liked the show. I liked most of the characters, and generally liked the actors portraying them. I thought it was a nice look into a life that most of us never experience, and I got the feeling that it was very realistic. And then they started the Sam Wants to Go to Antarctica storyline, and the realism dissolved. And it didn't have to; there are other places where penguins can more easily be observed and studied...

The name on the mailbox was "Smith." I guess they could have lived in that house and never painted over the previous owner's name, but I took it to mean that his last name is Smith.

I really wonder why some of the people who can't wait to comment on the show even watch it anymore.... This episode? I didn't hate it. It might not have done much to drive the story forward (many episodes don't) but it fit in nicely with the real premise of the show, which is NOT "How do people avoid getting eaten by zombies?" but "How do people survive and adapt in the zombie apocalypse?"

I expected the final scene to be Ambrose wearing a straight-jacket while locked in the padded cell he's been living in ever since he lost his mind dealing with the rock-worshipping cult from Season 2. THAT would have been believable, which is more than I can say about most of Season 3...

The song is "Illegal Smile" by the legendary and inimitable John Prine. It was first recorded and released in the early 1970s, when writing about marijuana use was decidedly "edgier" than it is now.

I thought it was just me. After every episode I feel like I must have missed the two immediately before it.

S10.E16: A Certain Doom
Lakebum replied to nodorothyparker's topic in The Walking Dead Franchise Shows
Not all walkers have been walkers for 10 years. Some have been walkers for 10 minutes. -
I made it thru episode 4 of Season 3, but just didn't care enough to keep going. It's not just that the plot was confusing and it was hard the keep the various iterations of characters straight (as well as know which year/universe they were in); I just stopped caring about any of the characters. BUT, the music in the show was consistently awesome.

I swear somebody forgot to print half of the pages of the script for many of the episodes. And in the final episode, some of those pages were at the very beginning. If a TV show is going make you say "Where are we? Who is that? What happened?" in the opening moments, then it had better answer those questions. I can't say that this one did.

My Brilliant Friend - General Discussion
Lakebum replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in My Brilliant Friend
I think Lila is lying, possibly for no other reason than: she's mean. If I ever get bored with this show, I'll still keep watching, at least until I get an answer to the question "Why does Lenu continue to put up with Lila? Why does she think they are friends?" -
So I never would have guessed that in a show about zombies eating people, the grossest thing I would ever see would involve nothing but two healthy people. But THAT was gross. (And I'm not sure if the walker mask made things better, or worse...)
-
I'm also surprised there are no comments; I hope people are watching. I don't know if there will be a Season 4 (there certainly is no more source material) but if this is it, I have enjoyed the ride.

"Hates the Reillys" is a bit strong. "Hates ONE of the Reillys and hopes to never see her or --especially -- hear her ever again" is more like it... if a bit simplistic and lacking in detail.

Ding dong, the witch is dead! Wait, not witch, but WITCH!! WITCH!!! Damn auto-correct... 😉

Agreed. But that was back when they cast actual PEOPLE who were most interested in the RACE. (And, also, back when every challenge was new and different, as were most locations.)

Or as she became know, "KKKendra."

I'm not a fan of stunt-casting, especially in Amazing Race, a show that so does not need it. And I have yet to experience anything likable about anything Big Brother. And, I haven't watched Survivor in a long, long time (though I was still watching for at least one of Rupert's appearances.) So I'm pretty sure that this won't go down as one of my favorite seasons of TAR. But when the theme song started to play? I actually teared up a little bit. Because I really do love this show, and have missed it. Who am I pulling for? Definitely a former TAR team ("team," so not BBRachel) but I'm just not sure which one yet.

Elk? They found a heard of... elk?? On the east coast?

I'm seeing a lot of love for Peach, which is a bit surprising; to me she was easily the most detestable person in the show, and that's taking into consideration that her main competition was a creepy stalker-serial killer. (Benjamin was no winner himself, but he didn't live long enough to rate consideration. i never have liked those super-elites who were born on third base and act like they hit a triple to get there. Her complete and utter disdain for everyone who wasn't in her economic or social class was despicable, and she actually had the gall to use the term "proletariat" while trash-talking someone.

Joe mentions that he augmented Beck's "Dr. Nicky" story with everything other readable thing that she had ever written. (And when she gave him the pages to read, there weren't very many of them.)
