They should have cast Liam Neeson for the Jack Reacher movies. One thing I really like about this show is that there are several older, rough-looking actors, men and women both. I'm not saying that they are unattractive, just that they look like they've lived through some shit.

S05.E07: The Committee on Human Rights

Yes, is Philip being paranoid? If he is, it wouldn't matter what Gabriel said. Gabriel doesn't seem to know who is paranoid. He first asks Philip if he's being serious, almost incredulous that Philip would ask that question. Then he acknowledges that they might not tell him in case Philip did ask, which suggests that he wouldn't be surprised to find out that she was one of them. -
S05.E07: The Committee on Human Rights

I am amazed so many people found this episode dull much less the whole season so far. I find the interaction between the characters endlessly fascinating. Gabriel and Elizabeth. Gabriel and Philip. Philip and Elizabeth. Stan and his new flame. Philip and Deirdre. Paige is the weakest link but I think that's mainly because everyone else is acting at such a high level. I even find digging a hole for 10 minutes on this show intriguing. I do agree that plot-wise we are on a slow build but I enjoy that as well. I think they need time to set up the blocks before they can knock them down. It will make for a better pay off later. One of the reasons it was so exciting when Martha was burned was the fact that she had been in the background for a couple of seasons before becoming to the forefront and there were many tense episodes like where they found the pen, etc. before they got to the big exciting finale of that particular story. I definitely do not need every story to be in every episode, either. I think the season and the series will stand as a whole and not every episode has to do that. I thought the twist that Ben was seeing another/other woman/women was interesting. I like how Philip told Elizabeth that it was OK to care and she said not for her it wasn't. I took that to mean that they were acknowledging that Philip had cared about Martha. Also, I think Elizabeth was questioning her spy abilities, since she said "I thought he wasn't like that." As in, I should have known he was not a one woman man. Now that Philip has confronted Gabriel about Stan's girlfriend possibly being one of them, I am really curious to see which way they go with that.- 317 replies

S05.E04: What's the Matter with Kansas?
DoubleUTeeEff replied to ElectricBoogaloo's topic in The Americans [V]
Yep, and Paige who is clued in, protests and tells him she would have eaten it. I liked how they put a couple of instances of food waste in this episode. The toast and also the carob at the health food store. I laughed at loud at the opening when Philip says, "Think they'll fire us?" Such a dry wit. -
Yes! That acknowledgment, not loving her as a husband should love a wife and receiving a thoughtful present based on her as a person rather than a problem to solve must have gone a long way to help Grace. She can really move on from the past now.

I enjoyed Robert's meltdown about the musical and ending it with "Hold me!" I liked that the protest was so absurd-keeping gays out of musicals! But the whole coffee spilling thing on the kid ratcheting up the protest was a little dumb. I think the protest was mainly a way for Sol to become involved with the gay community the way Robert joining the musical was.

I tend to sympathize with Grace over Frankie in most situations but I was with Frankie 100% on the gun. It's completely reasonable not to want a gun in your house and the fact that Grace shot the decoy thinking it was a person was totally glossed over. I mean, it was just sitting on the couch in the dark! It could have been someone they knew or a drunk person in the wrong house, not that a thief deserves to be shot in cold blood but at least they know they are taking a risk. Obviously Frankie handled it childishly with the filibuster. Even so, Grace wasn't that concerned over the shooting even though it could have easily had a terrible outcome.

Oh god, that reminds of when I once was with my coworker in our workplace and her husband happened to be there. I asked her a work-related question and he answered it. I was flabbergasted. I mean speaking for your wife is one thing and speaking for her about something you have no involvement in is a whole new level of I don't know what. Peter describing how Sol danced like a horse that had just been born was hilarious! I loved how he demonstrated it. Also, "you slept with Grace?!!" was funny followed by "you slept with Peter?!?" I was surprised that Grace went ahead with the vibrator pitch and didn't just scrap it when she heard they were a church group. Although I think it was cool they went in that direction and the ladies will be trying it out. I thought the spiky part was just the handle!

I don't think Martha's primary concern was the creature comforts in the Soviet Union vs. those in an American prison. I think it came down to, do I stay loyal to Philip or do I betray him? And for Martha, it's all about love. That's what she believes in. For her, staying loyal to Philip was important enough to give up everything she knows and even her family. Either way, she was never going to be with Philip again but this way she is staying true to her love for him. She even told him not to be alone, that's how important her love for him is. She wants him to be happy above all, even if it can't be with her. I do think she thought about the creature comforts she would lose though, considering how she looked at that jar of peanut butter before she left! It was weird to type Philip instead of Clark, but Martha knows all Philip's names now so... I love all the speculation about Martha and Henry when we only see them for such a short time! If something is going on with Henry, the pay off will be big.

It's weird the way they keep bringing up Seth's background. There was the whole parents are immigrants/father is an engineer last episode and this episode the journalist brings up his last name. Is there some nefarious reason why he changed it or was the journalist just needling him because he changed his name to fit in? And why would that be so terrible? I'm not sure if it's just poor writing or some sort of clue we are supposed to be picking up. And I'm guessing the wife and kids are moving to Camp David so one or all of them ends up kidnapped/in danger somehow.

I thought you were butt emoji-ing me!

Me too, but that was such a tease! Martha was one of my favorites. Yes, I noticed that too! I kept thinking about how Janice stole her leg and put it in a storage locker.

Didn't they leave him in the trunk of his car which they left in the parking lot outside the lab? Or was that their car? Yeah, I don't think Elizabeth is a sociopath either. I think she believes in a cause and she believes the ends justify the means. So if they kill a lab director so they can try to save millions of their countrymen from starving, it's worth it to her. Plus she told him that he "should have asked," which means she thinks he was doing something immoral and closing his eyes to it. Not that I agree with Elizabeth, just trying to see it through her eyes. Tuan was talking about the FBI watching the Russian family next door.

Kevin is the only one who could make me like Toby.

Who were Stan and Aderholt watching at the end of the episode?

Unfortunately, my guess is that it's still the prevailing attitude. Heck, in this thread alone there are many comments about how Randall is unfit to be an adoptive father because he is unemployed. Even though A) His wife is employed B) As an attorney! and C) They have a lot of money. Being a stay at home parent is not valued. If you are a woman, it's supposed to be good enough for you and if it's not you should just get some hobbies. No complaining allowed. If you are a man, you are wasting your time if you stay at home. It's as if you are too good to do that type of unpaid labor.

I thought the supervisor was taking advantage of his position rather than truly "training" her. He might have told her that but I thought different. Man, that scene of Philip having sex with progressively older and less attractive people was wrenching. Not because they were old and unattractive but that he had to do it as part of his job.

I wasn't surprised that Max ratted out Sally although I did feel bad for her. I was fully expecting that either Max, Sally or both were playing each other. I kind of hate Max now since from the flashback, we see his loyalty should be to Sally rather than the Dr. considering they started out together and only joined the Dr. later. Unless, of course Max was playing Sally way back then too. I'm interested to see if everyone here is right about Patrick. I hope so since he is the next mark.

It was definitely decomposing considering how much the people digging him up coughed and choked when they opened his coffin.

I thought it was borscht but maybe I'm making assumptions. Remember when the lady who answered the phones made him borscht when Martha was missing? He told her he hadn't had it in awhile or something similar. Yes! I noticed that and thought well, I guess there is some reason it would be a bad idea to burn a person with the disease William died of. Also, I am so dumb. I figured out they wanted William for a sample but imagined they would take his whole body, like they did with the rat. Then when they cut a chunk out of him, I thought of course they would only take a small portion! Imagine them carting his whole body around.

I thought she had found a second stash of money! I thought the first one was in a closet and it looked like the one from this episode was in the middle of the room. Maybe someone can let me know if I'm wrong.

I like how right after the husband's funeral, James and Zilpha have sex. It's kind of as if it was the marriage that was stopping them and not the fact that they are half-siblings. Which I guess is true since they were lovers before.

I'm thinking Lucy was told about Rittenhouse in the alternate timeline, the one where she had a fiance she didn't know about. I think maybe her mother turned away from Rittenhouse after she met Lucy's sister's father. That would make seem like Rittenhouse were the ones who wanted the timeline altered to make Lucy's mother come back to them, sacrificing Lucy's sister in the process. I enjoyed that Lucy's mother turned out to be Rittenhouse and since I turn off my brain for this show, I didn't see it coming. I thought there was too much of Lucy talking Flynn into being a good guy. I don't really believe that would work on him. I could live without any romantic pairings on this show. Or if they did have them, they were just matter of fact. Like, now this couple is dating instead of the whole will they/won't they thing. I wonder if Jiya's episode was of her seeing an alternate timeline or if she was actually time traveling. And if she did time travel, how long was she there and how did her body stay in the present?

Horse's Ass showed his true colors. He can dish it out but he can't take it. He can tell Kate what he thinks of her and be a dick, in his words, about it but as soon as someone shines some light on his own behavior he runs to mommy and daddy. And if his parents really let him get away with harassing clients and kicking them out just because they defended themselves, we have some understanding into how he got to be an entitled little ass. I'm so glad that he didn't have some special insight into Kate's soul and was 100% wrong about her. I also like that Kate saying no multiple times to Horse's Ass was really a no and there wasn't some secret attraction there. That was very satisfying. Between that and Toby saying they should have a long engagement, I started liking the relationships a little better on this show. And then there's the fight between Rebecca and Jack. I do think Rebecca lied (by omission) and should have disclosed that she and Ben had dated a short while. It's just rude to let Jack find out another way. You are his wife, you owe him that much. I think Jack overreacted to it, but I think that was because what he was really angry about was her going on tour. He probably should have shared his feelings about that from the beginning instead of being a martyr. I'm not sure what the compromise is in that situation but he should have spoken up sooner. I don't think it's horrible of her to want to go away for 4 or 5 weeks. If it were longer than that, I'd say wait until the kids graduate though. OTOH, I can see why Jack wouldn't like it. I'm curious if Jack is an alcoholic. Like, if he orders one Maker's Mark, does it inevitably turn into 6 more? Miguel said something that suggested he was, he invited him out and said "you don't have to drink." But earlier in the season, it seemed like Jack was just over-indulging and could stop if he wanted to. Oh, Sloane. I feel so bad for you. First you date a guy and overhear him say he's dating you even though he doesn't want to and because it's the right thing to do and then he leaves you hanging on opening night! And she's not just the actress, she's also the playwright and the NYT is there! Kevin better do something serious to make up for that.

Yes. At least in that case Kate immediately gave Olivia a dressing down. Now if she can only learn to do that in cases where men think she is sexy.
