  1. Also, lets say Jo did tell Alex. Then he breaks up with her, she goes out gets drunk, DeLuca still takes her home, falls on her and Alex walks in. Is it still Jo's fault, since she DID tell Alex her big secret? There are two different scenarios here, but the outcome could have been the same whether or not Jo told Alex her big secret. And that's on Alex.
  2. As much as I really don't want to get into the role of Jo Defender, here I go I guess: She did. She told both Webber and Stephanie the truth about DeLuca trying to help her. She should have said something earlier to Meredith or Alex or someone, but the whole episode took place in the span of a couple of hours and I don't fault people in a "crisis" situation for not handling things as maturely or calmly as they could. We didn't see the aftermath of exactly what happened in the loft when Alex was done with DeLuca, but we heard Jo screaming for Alex to stop last season in the finale. Maybe they actually took care of DeLuca and called an ambulance rather than rehash their relationship while he was bleeding out on the floor. We saw what happened when Jo did try to set the record straight with Alex, he didn't listen and insulted her. I guess she should have screamed at him to shut up right outside of DeLuca's door before anyone really knew that Alex was the culprit, but she didn't. I guess I'm not seeing how she kept what happened a big secret or how Alex's predicament is her fault. I get not liking her, but that isn't what played out onscreen. As far as why the beating was so severe, besides the fact that Grey's always goes to 11 when it would be fine at 5, I think it will come out that Alex being THAT violent shook Jo, hence why she won't be sending Alex cards in prison confessing to her secret husband. She has seen him act out before, quite a few times in fact. But this time is was severe enough to given even her pause and I think that will play out in the remainder of the storyline.
  3. The situations aren't really the same though (and Alex's first instinct was to lie and then to run.) He would have been running away from a crime that he just committed. Besides feeling guilty for a situation that wasn't her fault (and whatever you think of Jo, the DeLuca mess is ALL on Alex), she has one semi-friend at the hospital, just lost her (sometimes) professional mentor, has absolutely no familial support and basically just got called a slut who is incapable of love or commitment by her boyfriend. I mean, I would probably peace out of that hellhole myself. I'm not defending Jo about keeping her secret about her husband (although I don't think she is playing games or being malicious about it either), but I don't think its fair to lay all of this at her feet. Alex, being a grown man, should know better than to beat the shit out of someone without bothering to get all the facts.
  4. Seriously. I want Alex to face consequences, and it looks like he definitely will. But since this is a show where Izzie basically killed someone and half of the hospital BEGGED her to come back, where Bailey went against the wishes of parents and was heralded, and where Maggie punched a patient's mother in the face and got high-fived (just to name a few off the top of my head), I don't need this show to suddenly become Law & Order: Sexy Hospital Unit or HBO's next gritty crime drama. Of course, something unrealistic will happen to get Alex back to the hospital. But, it looks like he is going to suffer professional consequence even if he doesn't end up in jail. If nothing else he will be ostracized throughout the hospital. At least until the next natural catastrophe comes sweeping through.
  5. I agree. I have learned not to take this show all that seriously, and therefore I loved this episode. I don't blame Alex and Meredith for not rushing to tell Bailey and the cops everything the second that they got to the hospital. Was it right? No, but it was understandable. In the end, they both got there, maybe not for the best reasons or as soon as they should have but they got there. And along the lines of not taking it seriously, Alex gave the hottest perp walk ever and if he finds love with a fellow hot, lost soul in prison, so be it. I never thought that Alex beating someone so severely was completely out of character, but it does make more sense to me that he though DeLuca was taking advantage than because he was jealous. Not that there wasn't some of that too...his little speech to Jo was BRUTAL. Goddamn. Takes one to know one, huh Alex? I don't care, I love them and their horrible, Garbage Pail upbringings and their anguish is like sunshine to me! Also I find ragey, emotionally damaged Alex to be soooo much more interesting than mature, kindly old Doc Karev any day. I thought that Camilla Luddington did great and I loved Jo's scenes with Webber. I really, really hope that they continue this relationship, she could use a friend. I don't blame DeLuca for getting on her case about why she came to visit him, but damn, Jo is having a rough day LOL. Not as rough as DeLuca's of course, he just wanted to enjoy a cheesburger for god's sake. As always, just shut the fuck up, Maggie.
  6. Wow, I actually turned this off before it was over and I was kind of embarrassed for the cast for having to do this long-ass commercial. I'm glad that some of you liked it, but it all just seemed so, so forced to me. And Dre, when your method of being a better dad is to show them that what really matters is material things and VIP experiences, you end up with spoiled brats who don't say thank you. I get that he wants to be better than his parents, but he could actually do that by spending quality time with them, he doesn't need to do all of this. Honestly, he and Bow probably got where they are in part because of the way they were raised, I don't understand why that never occurs to them. I"m surprised that Bow was okay with all of that. I hope this is just an anomaly, because I love this show, but this was just ugh. I couldn't even enjoy the works scenes that much (did love the Pokemon Go stuff though).
  7. I loved Jimmy in all of his British-ness tonight (Rum Christopher's all around!), but I hope that this isn't the end of his dramatic arc. Its probably a good thing that the baby store didn't serve wine or Lindsey wouldn't have been quite so Mother of the Year. I did love that the guy she tried to kiss was horrified by her. Biggest laugh from me was when Paul was talking in a baby voice about suckling from her bosoms. It was an uncomfortable, squicked out laugh, but a laugh none the less. Ew.
  8. I'm actually not that old either (46), but I agree about the day job, and he was given a potential opportunity by Van, and as he did get in to Princeton, he must have had some options along the way somewhere. And I understood what he was saying about being poor, that you need money NOW not an investment that is going to pay off 3 months from now. But I guess I don't completely put him in that category of "poor" when he could do something to make money, he just chooses not to, when some people would give anything to get a chance at a paying security job or something along those lines. I also understand that when you are younger, you may not want to "sell-out" and maybe that's what he thinks a boring job would be, and he has bigger aspirations for himself. But once you have a kid, all of that needs to be set aside because it isn't just about you anymore, and that's where my frustration comes from. If it was just him, then couch surfing and pawn shops wouldn't be all that big of a deal to me. I do hope that we find out what happened with Princeton and get a bit more of his motivations. Though, I have a feeling this isn't going to be that kind of show.
  9. Well, nearly every other time that Alex has gone after someone, there have been a few people there to pull him off. This time there was just a drunk Jo. Not saying that he would have whaled on someone those other times, but it isn't out of the realm of possibility, at least for me. And I agree with Chas, Jo has never, ever gotten a pass for anything on this show, so I can guaranty that it won't start now. The fact that Alex reacted the way that he did will most likely reinforce to Jo that she was right not to tell him. I've said before that as long as they can make it clear that JO felt afraid enough not to tell Alex about her husband, that is enough for me, regardless of whether I or the other characters think she could have trusted Alex. I blame some of this on the writing as well, because clearly the direction that they are now taking Jo and Alex was decided at the last minute. It makes sense in regards to stuff from seasons 9 and 10, but is both supported and contradicted from episodes earlier in this past season. She has been written all over the place with unclear motivations, at least recently, so I am going to try to get on board with what is happening now, since they appear to have actually given it a tiny bit of thought at this point. Hopefully, it will be consistent going forward.
  10. Same here. Its the first episode where I really couldn't relate to anything that was going on. At first I thought it might be because I"m white and have absolutely no knowledge about the current rap scene, but really I just think its because I'm old LOL. I just don't get the social media stuff, the beef because someone put a picture on Instagram, etc. All of that just seems unreal to me, though I know it isn't. Zan was kind of funny, but if I were 20 years younger, I probably would have found him funnier. I still love Darius though. And I found myself getting impatient with Earn again. His speech about being poor, and the sad strummy music following that scene didn't ring true to me because he COULD have a job if he really wanted to and he wouldn't need to rely on samarai swords and sketchy dog breeding to earn money. He dropped out of of Princeton, so he did, at one time at least, have prospects and choices. Again, I think that this is where my age comes in and I'm just not relating. As much as this is a show about a specific person in a specific city, I think it is also about being part of a specific generation. *Shakes fist at Milennials* I"m just joking about that last part, but this episode made me feel old! Its okay, though. Not every episode has to cater to me. I'll always have the Golden Girls.
  11. I'm bringing stuff over from the Promo thread and the episode thread because I will be speculating and also I know that people get irritated when the episode thread is 3 pages long before the episode even airs. The beating was a bit much, but I don't really think that it is completely out of character. Alex has always had this in him and one of the reasons that I enjoy him as a character so much is because the writers haven't shied away from his darker side. It makes sense to me that someone from his background would do this, and also that the person he is now is horrified by it. He has come a long way and done his best to be better than his father was, and he succeeded. But I think that its realistic that he would lash out and now he is in panic mode and maybe trying to cover his tracks or at least see how bad things are before he makes any decisions. That makes sense to me as well. As for Jo, I think that the lack of information about her is deliberate right now, and I do think that she may have gotten injured. Which, of course will be worse for everyone involved and is definitely for the drama!thrills! factor. But I also think that it muddies the waters a bit about the whole "Evil Jo lied to poor Cupcake Alex" rewriting of history that I have seen here and there. It just adds another facet to the storyline and I hope will add a bit more depth to their relationship because they both have firsthand knowledge of abuse and its effects. The writers have proven that the don't much care about Jo, but I don't think that they are so tone-deaf as to not care about the criticism that they will get if this whole storyline is told primarily from Alex's perspective. My guess is that Meredith does cover for Alex initially, but then has a change of heart. Not about turning him in but about feeling uneasy that Alex was capable of something like this, especially if Jo shows up sporting a black eye. EP hinted as much in one of her interviews. She said something about "how well do you really know someone, etc., etc." I think it would be interesting if Jo was actually sympathetic to Jo for once and didn't immediately dismiss her out of blind loyalty to Alex. I don't really want Meredith all that involved in the Jo/Alex story, but my hope is that it will be a season long story and this is only the first stage of it, with Jo and Alex having more interaction once the initial shock of the beating and the reveal of the secret has passed. If nothing else, THIS will make the whole storyline worthwhile!
  12. I seriously doubt that you are the only one not looking forward to the Alex/Jo stuff, I'm sure that plenty of people will have stuff to say about it. But I AM looking forward to it, though not as much as I would have been had it happened a season or two ago. The amount of time that has passed and the lack of development for Jo and for their relationship has taken a toll on their storyline. But, it is what it is and I am anxious to see Jo get some real development and am thrilled to see Justin Chambers do something other than wander into a scene to give someone advice or smile at a kid and wander out again. The character of Alex will likely be assassinated to some degree, but after a drought of two seasons, I don't even care.
  13. I think that TV Line is just pulling stuff out of their ass, per usual, but if it ends up being someone that we have already seen, my guess is the investor guy that the Plane Crash Crew went to visit to help buy the hospital. I'm picturing someone not too much older than Jo, attractive and rich and/or powerful. But if he shows up he will probably be someone new.
  14. I completely agree and I also hope that they don't lay it on way, way too thick. In the promo pictures of the dinner party, it looks like Jo may have gotten a black eye, which may be from trying to pull Alex off of DeLuca. I am all for angst and emotional storylines, but I agree there needs to be some sensitivity to the issue and some restraint as well. As it is, I"m sure that the mustache-twirling husband will show up at some point, so I hope that they keep the soapiness to that part of the story and not in the first part of it. I much prefer to see what Jo has overcome than to get hit over the head with yet another "Somebody did Alex wrong" story. It seems like Alex is going to get raked over the coals quite a bit (and rightly so), and I am fine in not sympathizing with him, but I don't want his heartbreak and/or downward spiral to eclipse Jo's side of the story either.
  15. I am currently reading the latest Elizabeth George Inspector Lynley novel, A Banquet of Consequence. It has been out for awhile, and though I am usually chomping at the bit to get to the next one, the last few novels have turned me off her a little bit, as they aren't really mysteries, but more like social lectures. I"m happy to say that this one is back to form and I read nearly half of it in one sitting! I do have to laugh at her language sometimes, though. She is an American, but her stories take place in England and sometimes her vocabulary is like something out of an SNL skit. Its all biscuits this and cuppa that, and she actually refers to the police as rozzers. I mean, it is very possible that people really do talk this way, but I read a LOT of British mysteries, most written by British authors, and no one talks like that in those books. Blimey, Guv'na!
  16. My recommendation is The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All by Alan Gurganus. It tells the story of the war and its aftermath through Lucy, the 99 year old "narrator" and her life starting as a child bride during slavery through the war and into the 20th century. I love Civil War novels (though I could NOT get through Cold Mountain hard as I tried), and this is one of the best I've read. Its funny and also very moving. Warning: it is very long, like Gone With the Wind long, but I had not problem as the book was just so good and Lucy was just such a remarkable character.
  17. Didn't she also bang a delivery guy in his truck while she was married? I don't think Lindsey is a villain, but I also don't think she is sheltered so much as spoiled and willfully ignorant to other people's feelings for the most part.
  18. Yeah, it does seem to have gotten quite a bit broader and my (hopefully unfounded) fear is that the writers are making the common mistake of taking what makes a character funny and/or endearing and then magnifying it to 1000. I know that these people are awful, but there was always a glimpse of humanity in there among all of the narcissism and sociopathy. Quite a few characters have been lacking that so far this season, at least for me. I may have to go back and watch the first season again, because maybe I am just misremembering the characters. For example, I thought that a pregnant Becca having 1-2 glasses of wine to be totally in character and funny, but chugging bottles of it not so much. Gretchen panicking about Jimmy's dad's death was completely in character. But to throw a party and wait for him to find out in a public way by other people seems low even for her. Also, Lindsey stabbing Paul was funny in all of its shocking glory but her lack of real empathy toward him since then gets less and less funny. Jimmy is my favorite, and I nearly always find his self-involvement and pretension to be very funny and that hasn't changed. I look forward to seeing his semi-dramatic arc this season, so if nothing else, I am looking forward to that.
  19. Ok, this is kind of embarrassing but I had no idea that this was a real hip-hop group and I thought that the song at the end about champagne was to show how awful they were. I guess they are a real group and that is a real song that gets played on real radio stations and real people like it. Clearly I don't watch this show for the soundtrack. Full disclosure: the last hip-hop album I bought may have been by A Tribe Called Quest or Beastie Boys, so clearly I need to update my cassette collection. As far as Van and the dinner, it may have been a little passive-aggressive, but she DID just bail him out of jail.
  20. My favorite part was the guy in the car telling Earn about the Happy Hour prices and how he takes all his bitches there...right in front of his current. And his reaction "I KNOW you weren't listening in on my conversation. Girl, you a mess up!" HA! Things got dark pretty quick at that drug deal. Did they just leave the guy out in the woods? I couldn't tell if he was in with everyone at the end or not (like it was a fake-out?) Shows these days are lit so darkly that I can never tell what the hell is going on. I really like Earn so far, but I have a feeling that he is going to frustrate me after awhile if he doesn't progress at all. No shame in a security guard gig if thats all you can get temporarily. At least until his rap mogul career takes off. I am in the mood for some seafood gumbo and a tropical drink now though, that waitress was good!
  21. I just binged the whole thing over the weekend and that's kind of where I am with it. I kept anticipating the next episode, but after it was all said and done, I was like, "Wait...what?" I think my biggest WTF was why Henry killed Grace. I mean I guess we are just supposed to think that he is some kind of psycho but they never delved into at all. I believed that the first serial killer just hated women, but I didn't get Henry's motivations at all. I wasn't familiar with Anna Friel before but she reminded me so much of Debra Winger at times that it was distracting.
  22. I don't know if it is established. I remember Camilla saying in the post season interviews that the writers told her that he was very charismatic, but I feel like it was implied that he was powerful, if not rich. So he could have been a professor, a lawyer or someone high up either in politics or the medical field. But if he was that public of a figure, you would think that at least some of the doctors at the ever so prestigious Seattle Grace Mercy West Shepard Gray O'Malley hospital would have recognized his one time wife. So maybe he isn't that powerful or famous, just rich enough to track her down if he wanted to. I don't think that there is any indication that he paid for her schooling, it sounded like she got scholarships. My guess is she married him after college but before med school and changed her name legally along the way. I'm sure that she would get some kind of form so that her records would still be valid. None of it will completely make sense, of course, I just hope that the writers have thought about it at least half as much as I have.
  23. I just finished Summerscale's latest "The wicked Boy." Victorian mystery and crime is totally up my alley and I liked Whicher, but the latest just was not that interesting. She had to make a lot of inferences and you never quite got the motivations of the boy in the title. It took me a long while to read.
  24. I forgot about the guy on the bus. At first I thought he was some kind of Malcolm X hallucination, but the nutella was still on the seat so apparently was real and just got off the bus really quickly. Interesting about the strange dog and then walking into the woods. I wonder if he will be a recurring character? As for the big guy in jail, he reminded me of my late brother in law, who was white, a redneck from TN, and no stranger to jail cells himself! I can imagine a very similar explanation coming from him about why he needed to be balied out yet again! ETA - I just heard on a podcast that Donald Glover referred to this show as "Twin Peaks with rappers" and that brought to mind the guy on the bus. He may show up every episode and we may never learn a thing about him.
  25. I liked it too! From the reviews it seemed like it would be kind of slow with no real plot to it, which is not really my thing, but I thought this had enough movement to really introduce its world and its characters without giving it all away. Glover's voice is specific, but I think that the mood and emotion behind it was pretty universal. I don't have any connections to Atlanta either and I"m probably just as close to the parents' age as I am to the guys, but I understood their motivations and sensibilities for the most part. Except maybe Darius LOL! Right now, Earn seems to be a bit of a cypher and we view the world through his eyes without necessarily getting a real sense of who he is, but I think that will change over time. I am really interested in finding out what happened with his parents and what happened with Princeton. The jailhouse scenes were both hilarious and a bit horrifying. "Sexuality is a spectrum" or whatever he said had me cracking up, as did the guy's speech about having a beer with his friend he hadn't seen in 11 years. I agree, I thought that one of the more interesting points was when Dave the white guy used one language with Earn and a totally different one with the janitor and with Paper Boi and Darius. And what that says not only about Dave, but also Earn.
