  1. Look I have to hand it to Manci - she gave Abigail a certain flavor and even though I found the character deplorable because of it, she was consistently smug. I can see why people might become married to her particular take on the character - I just feel badly for them because there was absolutely no nuance or likability. Heaven Help Us all if she wins an Emmy. We'll never hear the end of it.
  2. Do you know who the villain for the film is? I'm guessing it's probably a build up to a Darkseid reveal but I'm not sure if there's been anything officially stated yet...
  3. Consider the Rachel Dolezal fiasco and all of the interviews Michael gave to magazines pretending to be Dorothy and speaking up about women's rights. They would have definitely had huge ratings and word-of-mouth, but just as much controversy. The network would basically have to say that they knew what he was doing all along and knowingly set women up with a heroine who was a fraud just looking for work and knew nothing about the struggles women face first hand...or admit that they were completely ignorant and had no safeguards in place against people sneaking their way into the studio in disguise. I guess I am overthinking a little bit, but I would have liked this movie so much better if it had given some thought to all of the ways Michael would have had to be fooling everybody constantly. Even going to bed with the Jessica Lange character and having his wig with curlers slip around on his head could have been disastrous.
  4. There was a lot to like about the second half of today's episode, but the first 20 minutes or so were a bit of a slog. I find Eli and Lani unconvincing as actors. I feel like I'm watching some other show like Young and the Restless when I see them. They just don't register as DAYS characters. I respect the actor playing JJ for trying to make his scenes opposite Sal work, but I can't imagine it's easy. Kate was being judgemental all over the place today but I didn't mind it so much. I especially loved that someone finally took issue with Sonny dating Paul after all of the crap Paul inadvertently caused in his marriage. it was weird to suddenly have characters referencing Will when he's been barely mentioned in months...but I won't complain. He should be on people's minds more often. I'm kind of disappointed Carrie and Austin didn't get any lines about him when they returned to Salem for the first time since his passing. I really liked seeing Marlena in her blue dress from Prague again, but I wish they would film it in such a way to show that great slit it has up the side. I think it's very flattering on Deidre but they just haven't shown enough of it. The dialogue with John was nice even though I feel like it backpedals on his promise in 2015 to stop working for the ISA. Hopefully at some point they can explain why this new mission was so important to justify him being away for so long after supposedly retiring.
  5. Is anyone else a big fan of this fantastic 80s film that brilliantly updates the contents of two Oz books to create a completely satisfying if decidedly darker take on the world Judy Garland left behind? I know Princess Mombi and her Hall of Heads inspired quite a few nightmares, but I still somehow always loved the way this film didn't talk down to kids about always trusting adults. Practically all of the adults in this movie are completely wrong or flat-out dangerous and yet young Dorothy is able to survive them. You go girl!
  6. I had no idea that there was underage sex or molestation in Stephen King's books. Weird. After watching the trailer for the new IT I found myself rather pleasantly surprised. It seems like a very faithful update of the nineties TV movie version, which scared the dickens out of me. I rewatched it a couple of years ago and found it to be slightly less creepy and a little bit more silly. Tim Curry is a genius however and manages to make so much out of so little. The big animatronic spider at the end of the original movie was very dumb however. I wonder if they'll keep that. Since we're talking about adaptations of his work, has anybody seen any of the stage versions of Carrie over the years? A video of the original stratford-upon-avon production is viewable on YT and there have been several revivals...
  7. BINGO!! Thank you. Very well said. It's true that she's terrific at suggesting the character's long career in the business. I still can't help but wonder what kind of a nightmare he left her to deal with after that big reveal. If she were to admit that she was fooled, she might very well lose her job. This is exactly the kind of thing that networks panic about and fire people over.
  8. You and me both. Are they still running it? Is that what Lucas "does"? Do we know when Eve is coming back? I seem to recall she was shooting again...
  9. Surely, they can appreciate how much MM has brought back to the role - like dignity?
  10. Marlena will be having a John-relatrd dream next week.
  11. I saw the end of today's show and I don't have too much to add to all of your comments, but I did want to point out that I was surprised by how nice Jennifer looked in her date dress. I still wish she'd stop acting like a guidance counselor while trying to date Eric, though.
  12. Sorry but that girl looks nothing like a Ciara recast. I'm sorry for his fans but seeing A Martinez go is just another step in the right direction. They seem to be cutting out everyone who needs to go and I hope they continue.
  13. Yes, congrats and do proceed with caution. People will open up and you will learn more in time. Photos will help piece things together...if there are albums around. With all the long lost kids popping up in Salem, Tripp should be attending support group meetings with Lani, Eli, and Paul. (Have I mentionned how much I hate this overused twist?)
  14. I wonder if Super Hope will ultimately take down Deimos over the Bo debacle....in spite of the fact he bought her protection in prison.
  15. Christ - Adrienne was raped too? >:( This show. I hear you...
  16. Allie could be great, but it's dependent on the writing. They were doing okay with Claire for a while there...now this.
  17. Again, Theresa had good soapy material all throughout 2016. How is none of it represented?
  18. Wonder if Trip will go the way of Summer and get written out next...I guess it depends on how good the actor is and how long a contract he signed.
  19. I won't miss Joey at all. The actor definitely looked the part of Steve and Kayla's son, but as you've already noted he was just so one-note. The writing for him has been terrible too, but he's emerged practically unscathed compared to what happened to Ciara, Chase and now Claire.
  20. Boy, he sounds fun. I guess he thought he was being sassy and a straight-shooter? Maybe we should talk about people who are part of the family we made for ourselves by choice. Anyone develop a close relationship with a Big Brother/Big Sister? A teacher? A neighbor? A pen pal?
  21. Nothing for Suzanne as Maggie? Wow. All those 2016 tears for nothing. Kate Mansi is....no comment. Yay for Billy Flynn and John Aniston. A bit bummed Jen Lilley isn't nominated. She did have a reel, right?

    Moana (2016)

I am very late to the party. I so wanted to love this film. Even in the days after watching it I kept asking myself why I didn't feel like it was wonderful and great. I think at the end of the day I really appreciate its focus on Polynesian mythology and I love the setting and the song that Moana sings as she sets out with the spirit of her grandmother behind her. All of that is good stuff. It's just that the film is kind of a mess otherwise. I didn't like any of the other songs and I especially felt the whole crab scene went wildly over-the-top to the point where I can't even say that I hated it or liked it as much as I just felt completely thrown by it. I think they just threw too much at the audience with that sequence. I also found Moana ridiculously passive throughout the whole film, but I guess that's to be expected when the freaking ocean is jumping up every two seconds to get you where you need to go and protect you and guide you and give you everything you need to win. All Moana had to do was show up and the day was saved. Didn't like that. The animal sidekicks were so useless I actually felt badly that the studio felt obligated to include them. I liked the rooster and he got a lot of laughs from me but aside from temporarily swallowing the gem what purpose did he serve? The pig was obviously written out of the film before it was released and they just kept him around for marketing purposes. Like Brave, I feel like they had the potential to set up a really epic mythological action story for a female protagonist people could get invested in, but instead they just dropped the ball. I really don't know much about Polynesian mythology and the film didn't bother to tell me very much either. Hercules isn't much better with Greek mythology, but at least you get a sense of what the hierarchy is with those gods and how they interact with the mortals. Maui was entertaining, but I kind of expected that he and Moana would go up against various gods or god-like challenges and instead it only amounted to the crab scene and those ridiculous coconut people, who are basically like plushies that I can already imagine are being sold at the theme parks. Do they have any significance in Polynesian culture? Even if they do, I found them tacky. In short I guess the film didn't use its time very well and seemed to focus on things that didn't matter all that much to me as an audience member. I liked the ending and the reveal of the villain's motivation made a lot of sense and was clearly well planned out from the start, but a lot of the rest of it felt like it was heavily debated in the writers room and they just finally released whatever it was that they had. Do people really love this film? I almost feel like Pocahontas did a better job of explaining First Nations culture then this did with Polynesian myths and history. And even in spite of all of that, I still want to like it. It's not impossible to watch and the character designs are pretty good and the film holds together structurally even if I found myself disappointed in so much of it. I didn't go into it with any specific expectations other than the hope that it would succeed where Brave seemed to fail.
  23. I would say give the person a chance, and remember that they can't hurt you unless you allow them too. You can control the context of your relationship. It can be a coffee once a month, or more or less. See how you feel and remember people aren't always what others say about them. This could be someone decent. Just try to figure out if they have motives in connecting with you. If you feel comfortable answering, why do you feel compelled to reach out to them? Examining your own motivations will help you suss out if this is a good idea or not.
  24. I hope that "ripped jeans/motorcycle girl" isn't really the description of the Ciara still to come. I really wanted Days to go back to little LB's somewhat selfish princess take on the character and just mature her a bit. That's probably who she should have been from the start. Professor Kinky is not welcome here. We don't need yet another obsessive newcharacter after Jade, Lani, Claire and Summer (nope, still not over her).
  25. I just watched Monday's episode and was rather moved by Eric. The man absolutely needs to stop with the crying and the self-loathing, but his scene with Maggie struck a bit of a chord. He did kill the woman's son and Maggie as an alcoholic can relate to what he went through (who did she almost kill?). I kind of wish we had gotten to see more of him and Maggie just processing all of that - them talking could have been the whole episode - considering I don't remember them ever having scenes together after the car accident last January. It was nice to be reminded of the terrific work Suzanne did when Maggie was called upon to make that (admittedly ridiculous) decision at the hospital during the aftermath. Speaking of which, did Eric's infection or heart defect or whatever ever completely clear up? I'm still waiting for the writers to address the fact that Jennifer is trying to sex up the man who killed her beloved Dr. Tan. Will Eric ever bring that up? Jennifer's outfit was totally hideous. What the hell was she thinking with the elephantine red pants and tie...and pink top? Is that her come hither wear? I was also stunned that she didn't eviscerate Chad or push him into the fireplace. Lady wanted to take his son away for no good reason last summer...but now he's straight-up breaking Abigail's heart and Jennifer isn't ready to bust one of his testicles over it? Hun?! Okay then. I also thought the writing for Chad was ridiculous. The character was never shown to be that insensitive. No reason for dropping bombs left and right, man! If the show was never going to bother actually pairing Dario up with Nicole, who he had chemistry with, I don't see what he's even doing around. I am so completely bummed about what the show's doing to Claire for the sake of propping up Ciara, who never had any chemistry with Theo from what I remember. Not to be mean, but from the way she frequently talks and acts, she seems like the one who has the disorder. Marci Miller is definitely a find though. Is she from New York by any chance or did she study there? Her tears when she hugged Mama Jennifer felt so real I actually for a moment began to almost get reeled into this stupid storyline. I'll be very happy to see her in something worthy of her talents later on. If the show is bothering to pretend that Brady and Nicole are hiding out in super exotic way off the grid Canada, I hope they at least plan on doing some location shoots with trees and snow and maple syrup. Maybe a hockey player too.
