But that is the whole point of the "one week you're in and one week you're out" tagline of the show.... and the reason they make this big deal about the fake "blind judging" of not knowing whose looks belong to who, even though they totally do. I do find it frustrating for someone good to get sent home for a bad week, but that's how the game works... and I would be fine if the Tim Gunn save didn't exist. While the judges may have praised a lot of Sandhya's work.. it wasn't always unilateral, there always seemed to be at least one judge who disliked her look, even the weeks she won. And I don't think everything she did was terrible, her dress from the first week was interesting even if it's not to my taste... but some of the things she earned praise for where hideous and a fail on the judges part. This week she made an outfit that didn't fit the challenge, like Fade didn't make an Avante Garde look last week... that means it's time to be out.
-
I do think it's reasonable for Fade to be eliminated since he missed the mark on the Avante garde aspect if this challenge... Though there are other outfits that I personally though were way worse. But I think some of the lament is that many who like Fade and the things he's done in other challenges feel like this is the perfect situation for the Tim Gunn save- a designer with potential and a point of view who has a bad week. Obviously agreement with that varies on individual opinions of the designers.... Personally I would have rather seen more from Fade than from Char... But it's not up to me.

I actually mostly agreed with the judges this week... it must be bizarre week on project runway or something... I thought the top looks were the right ones for the most part, though I didn't dislike Emily's look as much as the judges. I think they chose the right winner. Kini's dress was perfect and the jacket was beautiful, and overall it fit the challenge and the Samantha character perfectly. This was a win that Kini really deserved. Korina's dress was also pretty good conceptually, and she was close with the execution, but you could really tell in the close up shots how rushed she was and how unfinished the blocks really were. But I definitely agree with her being in the top. I'm not all that thrilled with fringe, but Char's dress was really cute, and I think the look with fringed ended up okay, so I'm fine with her being in the top. Amanda's look was okay, but I definitely was thinking "safe" when it walked down the runway. Alexander's outfit on the other hand... ugh.. I hate the exposed zipper thing, which I know is in part a time thing... but it just looks so bad from the back. I didn't mind the fabrics he chose, but something about his look just hurt my eyes. I would have put that in the bottom over Emily. Sean's was boring to me, so I agreed fully with the judges critique on his outfit. Sanhya's outfit.... circus and onsie definitely come to mind. The little pelplum/tutu thing wasn't good in any way, the color just seemed like the wrong shade of pink and I didn't get sailor at all from that outfit, despite the buttons. She's not been a designer I've liked all that much, but more because all of the praise she'd been receiving for outfits that I found terrible... and I often FFwd a lot of the drama, since I don't care... but her responses on the runway sort of bugged. I'm glad she was eliminated, I think it was the right choice given the outfit she sent down the runway.

Add me to this chorus, I definitely was bummed before the elimination that they once again telegraphed from the beginning who was going home via the repeat clips of her on the phone with her daughter, like they did last week with Fade. So color me very surprised when they auf'd Sandhya instead. I can see the judges point, but I didn't think Emily's look was that bad. I liked the iridescent skirt and the craftsmanship of the sweater. It doesn't bother me at all when designers don't take Tim's advice, since we've seen before that the judges don't always agree, or the contestants take his advice but in a wrong direction. But... there is something about the attitude with which the critiques are received. Char isn't my favorite by a long shot, but she listened to what Tim had to say and took it into consideration. Sandhya, like on the runway, seemed dismissive of Tim's critique.... and Tim could tell- he pretty much told her that he didn't have much guidance to offer her because he doesn't get what the judges keep loving about her work. As to Sean, who someone else mentioned above... I don't think he was in the bottom because of not having fringe... I don't see that as something that would have saved the look.
-
While Tim is part of the production team, I still think that he doesn't have much choice about the "Tim Gunn Save" My personal feeling is that they wanted him to use it earlier in the season- before it could really matter and before he could use it on someone who actually deserved it. Fade hasn't made a ton of completely amazing stuff, but a lot of his work has been interesting or at least finished. Char hasn't done anything all that interesting for the whole season... but this reeks of manipulation to me. They like the idea of the Tim Gunn Save, but they've turned it into a joke because they don't want the judges to ever be "wrong".

The Knockout, Last Chance Kitchen with a new name
roctavia replied to GaT's topic in Top Chef Duels [V]
Why, then do they call in the knockout if you aren't necessarily out when you lose? It's just silly! But I've never been a fan of the last chance kitchen/ you can come back idea. Especially if you go out early (like in regular top chef) and then get to compete in the final round without having to go through the more difficult challenges that the rest of the group faced. It's unfair and annoying to me. Which is probably why I don't have enough interest to watch these extras! -
Since they were having custody hearings etc. i'd assume that they are actually divorced. And also, given the fact that mom had a new live in boyfriend, i'm not to bothered by Eph getting it on with Nora. Though the timing and location of this particular liason didn't make much sense to me... i mean, i know they're going through some intense stuff... but it definitely wasn't giving off some sexy, we just started a fire outside and now i've got a fire in my pants kind of vibe. Like they needed to just throw in some sex to put it in...or they wanted a reason for Eph to be caught in a compromising position by the friend lady? I could have done without that whole subplot.

I think it was a picture of the infected rockstar guy.
-
I think the Tim Gunn save is fake... it's something to make us think that there is this chance that Tim could correct a wrong aufing, (which could have been helpful in some of the older seasons) but really, the production just uses it as a way to manipulate everyone. He probably is told when to use it or who to use it on.... and despite his 'if it were later in the show' comment, they probably require him to use it before there are only X number of designers left. I think it's a sham.

Every time those ads come on in our house, especially now that they have the two hearts one... one of us will yell out "Double butt!!" Or make some sort of joke about "and here's a butt for you!" Maybe Amanda's design would have been better if it had butts all over it...
-
They complained about the goth dress, but that team was still in the top.... so they must have scored higher than A/K, but it just showed that Kini and Sean were miles ahead of everyone else. They liked Fade's dress and several of the judges liked the goth dress, but of course some of them had to be critical...
-
Oh, Kini! What happened??? It was definitely a huge change for his dress to turn out so unpolished. I was very surprised to see him struggle so much, but I am glad that he was pretty much safe, they didn't even contemplate him going home. And was it just me, or did they sort of do the same thing with Amanda's look... like they didn't even consider it for the win? Just sort of skipped over it? Or did I blank on some of it? But if that's the case, it's interesting when Heidi hates a look and the others like it, it can still win, but for Zac to hate something, it no longer has a chance of winning. I definitely agree with Zac, though... Amanda's jumpsuit thingy was horrible!! I just knew they were going to like it they way they edited Amanda freaking out about it. It didn't look polished, it didn't look glam... it didn't look like it belonged with super expensive jewelry... it just sort of looked stupid to me.... definitely something for the worst dressed list... ick. She should go home, I'm sick of her stuff.... even taking the personality stuff out of the equation. I didn't have much problem with the other two top looks or who they gave the win to. Korina's dress was better than the coat for me, but I did think it an odd combo with the necklace. The judges praised the black on black, but it made it harder to see the details for me. Seans dress was also really elegant and showcased the jewelry very nicely. I don't have too much problem with the bottom looks either, since the 'safe' designers all had pretty decent dresses even if they weren't the most exciting. I did notice a lot of them seemed to have the same sort of tail shape on the backs, which was strange... but most of the looks were okay, even if nothing really wowed me this week.

Agree... didn't he call it "my love" or something like that when he fed it some of his blood in the first episode?

S01.E05: David Burke vs. Takashi Yagihashi
roctavia replied to FormerMod-a1's topic in Top Chef Duels [V]
This episode was so nice to watch- it was about the food and had chefs who aren't so obsessed with being a TV star that they have to throw insults and be jerks just for the attention. They actually have respect for each other as chefs and cooked some amazing food without all of the stupid drama. This is the type of reality competition show I like to watch :) I don't do seafood, so I don't have much to say about the sea squirt... but they both seemed to come up with really creative ways to use such odd ingredients. Armadillo sort of freaks me out, since all I can think is leprosy! They carry leprosy!! but that fruit sounds really interesting... either one of those desserts sounded delicious!! -
Rewatching the other night, I was wondering if they decided the Castithans needed to be extremely white before they decided that bathing was going to be sort of a large part of their culture, or if they got to one of the first days of tub scenes and were like, well shit... this was a dumb idea :P Can't be easy to keep all of that white non- toxic yet intact when they're sitting around in a tub all the time.

I agree that it was mostly plot and a chance to be funny.... but also, the gas station lost power, so it's possible that the pumps themselves were on a separate grid/network- like how after the gas station is closed for the night the pumps are still lit up and you can get gas as long as you pay with a card... but with the power out inside, he may not have been able to authorize anything to the pumps. And though he couldn't get Jim's card to work (which at one point I thought was going to be a 'the CDC froze your accounts' or something) but he was saying that the system was slow, so I was thinking more of an intermittent interruption and they got really lucky that the card went through at the gas pump.

Season 13 Spoilers and Spoiled Speculation
roctavia replied to Rhondinella's topic in Project Runway
I think Tim used his save properly with Justin. Not only did he like him as a person and did Justin have some interesting ideas... but Tim was very encouraging of the hot glue lace stuff that got him aufed.... not that it's Tim's fault, since his guidance isn't always perfect, since he can't predict what stupid ideas the judges are going to have... but that was definitely a situation where he saw more in the technique even if the final execution failed. I don't think Char has really done anything all that interesting, nor was she steered wrong by Tim during their critiques, so I think it'd be a waste for him to save her. But I suppose we'll see. -
Season 13 Spoilers and Spoiled Speculation
roctavia replied to Rhondinella's topic in Project Runway
Somehow I missed the promo for next week... and really, I don't know if I care... that's how inspiring this season has been for me. That said... I suppose it could be one of those things where another designer Samantha?? maybe, since I'm betting the middle person in the picture is Sandhya and not her... has to leave the competition for some reason- like a family emergency or something... so they bring back Char to take her spot... isn't that how Chris March got brought back? Someone left due to illness? I've always thought the Tim Gunn save should be used when he disagrees with the judges on that particular challenge. Not just "oh you made crap, but I think you have potential" but more of "I really liked what you did and i'm not sure why the judges hated it so much or I guided you in this direction and think it could have worked... " -
I agree with many of the posters in saying that Kini was robbed, especially knowing that he sewed Sean's top. I know this isn't top seamstress, but construction ability is important... otherwise the designers should just be bringing out their sketch books and saying " I know my outfit is a mess and falling apart, but this is what it was supposed to look like!!" Why even sew at all... I think even without Kini having done the top, his outfit fit the challenge better and should have been the winner, so add in that he did a lot of the work for his partner, it does really sting. I wonder if Tim wasn't aware that Kini did most of the sewing on the shirt? that's the exact sort of thing that he should be bringing to the attention of the judges. I think this was all just drama driven though, it's more 'surprising' if they give the win to Sean, which is sort of what they've been doing all season.... and why in 6 episodes, we've only had 3 winners. I'm okay with Char going home... but any of the 4 bottom looks would have been fine with me. they all sucked. Amanda and korina's stuff was boring as well. Amanda's dress was that same A-line/trapeze sort of thing without much shape. and that suit was boring. I did like Fade's dress.... and though the gothic wedding dress was a little OTT I didn't hate it.

S01.E04: CJ Jacobson vs. Stefan Richter
roctavia replied to Tara Ariano's topic in Top Chef Duels [V]
I must not have paid enough attention in the past because I always sort of liked CJ and found the dislike for him strange... but watching last night and actually paying attention, I totally get it now. Stefan likes to be snarky and he had a 'superior' attitude in his season, but he was still relatively likeable. Last night Stefan was right on point when he said he wasn't going to say anything in return to CJ dissing him/ his food because it just makes you look like a douche. Because of that, I was disappointed that Stefan lost. And also the whole foraging thing seemed odd, and also sort of unfair when this is like CJ's niche and not so much for Stefan- though Stefan did seem to know a lot, so that's good. But I didn't ever get the impression that it was something Stefan was really into. So it makes the challenge seem skewed. Like if it had been Richard and one of the more 'down home' type cooks in a battle that was all molecular gastronomy blah blah whatever they call it now. But frankly, if you served me food on a bed of leaves/grass/crap from the forest floor and some rocks... can't say I'd be too interested in eating it. -
All of this, so much!! The choices they made in these final episodes just didn't make sense. They didn't fit with the journey these characters have been on for 7 fricken seasons... They swept everything under the rug for the sake of a happy thanksgiving at the end without ever actually dealing with all of great issues that this show brought to the forefront from the beginning. I will never be happy with the idea that Bill had to die... but they most definitely could have done it in a way that made more sense. He needed a better reason to be so set on dying, especially when nothing changed for Sookie- she was still fae, yet ended up with a human (or close enough) just like all of her issues from the beginning of the show were no big deal. Which sort of loses the whole point of her being an outcast and why she and Bill connected because he was an outcast amongst vampires. Him taking the cure and not having it work would have been much more believable... though with a show where we have a million supernatural creatures and flippin fairies- fairies who's powers have been nebulous and never really defined left a ton of open doors for the writers to exploit to make a better story. A show that has talked about miracles from day one and about how 'everything has a purpose, even a vampire' etc. from the beginning...yet they didn't pick up any of those threads to make this finale worth while. Bill's purpose could have been to show Sookie about love and come to terms with who she is blah blah blah so she can lead a life with out him, but that point didn't come across... it's almost as if Bill never existed in Bon Temps aside from Jessica's presence. As someone who loves the Bill Compton character, that was the most disappointing. Kill him, but at least make him matter. There was just so much of this finale that left me disappointed...they had so much potential and such a great cast... and they wasted it to shock us with some final gore and a random happy (but boring/disappointing/lame) ending.
-
That is a very good question!!! Unless she overheard something in Fangtasia??? We know she read Bill's book and got info from that, but Tara's death hadn't happened yet... and it's not like she was loitering around Bon Temps. Maybe we can assume Pam was raging at her after she was caught about how the infected killed Tara? But that doesn't seem like a very pam thing to do... or it's just one more thing that shows us how not well the writers know their own show.
-
More interviews from BB, which have not helped, IMO... talked about how he wanted to satisfy all of the different writers or something like that, in not ending the Bill/Eric/Sookie triangle by putting Sookie with one of those guys... Which, sorry, that's just stupid, and left us with a stupid ending. I get that the books got a lot of backlash, and I get that Eric is a fan favorite (and really, I like Eric a lot too... but him settling into life in Bon Temps with Sookie? Just doesn't work for me, he needs to be off being badass somewhere.) but all of the seasons came back to Bill/Sookie in some way, every single one, even when Bill was Billith or going crazy, someone mentioned how much they had meant to each other or how special their love was etc. They made it look like part of this story was supposed to be about 'true love' and how you overcome obstacles... Sookie never really moved on to anybody else like she did in the books, her feelings for Bill always lingered. Bucky even said in an interview before the show started "At the end of the day, this is a love story" But now he's saying (parrotphrasing) "It's been clear through all 7 seasons that Bill and Sookie weren't going to be some sort of forever true love" Those two comments don't make sense to me... Especially in a show about miracles and magic and all kinds of supernatural creatures. Sookie did still love Bill at the end of the day, and Bill still loved her... but they contrived some dumb reasons why they couldn't be together, since this has to be all tragic. It wouldn't have made it less tragic, but I think it would have made it better if they had a better reason for Bill's death... they tried to make it a good reason, but using actual logic, it's a bonehead "Sookie can't have babies with Bill" even though there is a lot more to happiness than just having babies...
-
It made more sense back in S3 when they broke up in the hospital- that he wanted her to have a life in the sunlight, with children... that she could grow old with someone.... this is like a rehash of that, but more final, since there's no coming back from the true death... But that sort of thing makes me then wonder what the point of the seasons after that really was- nobody has changed- or they did change, but now have almost reverted back to who they were in the beginning of the series... Except now, Sookie must have found that beard dude doesn't have as many nasty thoughts as the men she used to meet before Bill and Eric.
-
I get the point that they were trying to make, but I think they failed miserably at it. The plan from the beginning of the season was for Bill to meet the true death and have Sookie end up with a rando... okay, fine... but they could have had it make more sense. Bill's story this season, even with all of his human flashbacks, wasn't showing us that he was tired of his vampire existance, that he was ready for his life to end... that would have helped. It was just about how he had kids and a family (even though he never got to actually raises those kids or enjoy being part of a family- since his kids were like 4 and an infant when he left) and he thought that Sookie wanted kids and a family and he couldn't give her that. (ever heard of adoption? Sperm donors?), and also how Hep V makes people suicidal... take the cure, man...if you still want to die after you're healed, then go for a nice early morning walk! It was a huge cop out to the whole Bill/Sookie true love thing that they've played up for all 7 seasons (love it or hate it, it's always been a main part of the show) And then they talk about miracles and all that bullshit just for him to die? ugh... it's making me angry all over again. I could have handled Bill dying if they were able to execute what they were after properly, but it just didn't have the right set up for this viewer... up until the flash forward, Sookie seemed pretty certain that the life she wanted to lead involved Bill... which is why she kept trying to convince him again not to die. I don't mind the faceless beard for her husband in the future (though i'd much rather they had gone the Bill turns human route) but I wish Bill's death had served a better purpose.
