  1. But.... I doubt Craig Kilborn had any devoted following. He had nowhere near the viewer loyalty of Ferguson.
  2. Congrats, Craig!! http://variety.com/2014/tv/news/craig-ferguson-in-final-negotiations-with-tribune-for-7-p-m-syndicated-talkshow-exclusive-1201283991/
  3. Dang. I feel terrible for bringing it up. Actually, Bill Carter mentioned it in a tweet last night, and I also thought it was interesting that Fallon didn't show that visit. (Also, I couldn't find it on IMDb, but obviously I wasn't looking closely enough.
  4. I was reading somewhere that Robin Williams considered Dana Carvey to have the best impression of him. Which got me thinking: Hey, doesn't Jimmy Fallon do a killer Robin Williams impression? Which also got me thinking: Hey, Jimmy Fallon is in 6th year doing a late-night talk show, why has Robin Williams never been a guest? And it's not like Williams wasn't doing talk shows: Last year, he was promoting his CBS sitcom on Jay Leno, Letterman, Kimmel, Ferguson, Ellen, Kelly and Michael, Jon Stewart, and he was even on Graham Norton in 2011. In fact, Williams has been a guest on Letterman 7 times during Fallon's late-night tenure. He was also a guest twice on Conan's short-lived Tonight Show. But never on Fallon. I wonder why....
  5. I remember seeing Cecly sit on Jimmy Fallon's couch during her 1st season, and thinking, "Wow, she's really made it." You never see 1st year SNL players do that. She seemed like she was going places in her first season. But then she went places in her 2nd season, and she didn't deliver. EDITED TO ADD: I was thinking of going to this, then I saw the pricetage (I'm 3.5 miles away). When Wheelan was fired, Judd Apatow predicted he would have a Roberet Downey Jr-type post-SNL career. But now Apatow, who's been studying comedians for more than 30 years, is going on stage with him. I wonder if he sees something special.
  6. Yes. Also annoying: Recapping every previous FredEx segment (at least he did this a few weeks ago) and having his intern come out to pick up the envelope. Do they really have to do that on-air? Edited to add: Meyers (re-)explained Fred's hiring with Buzzfeed in an interview on Monday. http://www.buzzfeed.com/lyapalater/seth-meyers-explains-how-fred-armisen-became-his-band-leader#ok9s4h
  7. Frequent TMZ interview subject Les Moonves confirmed last night that Corden is a finalist, but that's all he would say. http://www.tmz.com/2014/08/06/les-moonves-late-late-show-host-james-corden-craig-ferguson-video/
  8. I don't know. British pop-culture is awash in American influence. It's unavoidable. If you watch The Graham Norton Show, there's an American (or Americans) on the show each week. I've watched a lot of British reality TV, and it's clear that British people know what's up.
  9. At first I didn't mind Seth talking about his family and home life. I didn't even mind that he had his brother on. But I think it's reached a point where Seth talking about his family has become overkill. I don't think Conan has talked this much about his family in 21 years.
  10. After all the chatter that this job should go to a non-white male, it *looks* like CBS went out of its way to find a white male. Anyways, I wonder if he can get Seth Meyers to up his game (now, I will head to that thread to rant about Seth.)
  11. Yeay white males!!! (I've known about Corden for 7 years...before he won his Tony...because I'm a fan of the British version of Big Brother, and he used to co-host one of its talk shows.)
  12. Rick Ludwin was the NBC executive who developed and championed Seinfeld and fought against its cancelation. (If there was no Rick Ludwin, Seinfeld wouldn't exist. Warren Littlefield called Ludwin NBC's "patron saint.") The Letterman/Leno trainwreck resulted in nearly 2 decades of NBC dominance in late-night. Same for the Conan/Leno trainwreck. That trainwreck paved the way for Fallon to be where he is now -- No. 1 and dominating, with Seth Meyers also dominating. So Ludwin must've been extremely valuable to the Peacock.
  13. I don't recall any outrage over this from 2 months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bYJB0WuLZw
  14. On a somewhat related note, Julia Roberts was booked to make her Kimmel debut early this year. But she had to cancel after her half-sister committed suicide. So she was booked three months laer, but the odd thing was she was the No. 2 guest. The No. 1 guest was Sally Field, which I sort of get but don't get. I mean, they're both movie icons, and Roberts is more relevant than Sally. But why book them on the same show?...perhaps to do this: Okay, back on topic.... I read a ton of websites every day...and I've noticed that while Fallon's "viral" bits still get picked up, they don't get picked up as frequently as they used to. Maybe they're getting too repetitive. Oh, and going back to Julia, I think some of these Dave-loyal celebrities are having to branch out, perhaps realizing that they have to find a new late-night person. I think Fallon will probably do some Pretty Woman skit. Or something... Kimmel, who was born the same month as Roberts, also had to get through the typical Pretty Woman questions, especially since his shown is located on Holllywood Blvd. Oh, another thing: I was surprised to see Jon Hamm was on last night's show. I haven't watched it. I read about the viral video. The episode is on my DVR. Hamm's last appearance was just 4 months ago, March 10. Back then, he was promoting Mad Men and, I think, his new movie. What's he doing now? We're sort of in the Jon Hamm hiatus zone...
  15. I know this is a weird thing to say, but, man, SNL alums are getting old. David Spade turned 50 this week. And here are Sandler and Norm, looking old.
  16. I don't get the love for Fred here. Okay, I get the love for Fred. I think he's an awesome talent. I'm one of the few people who liked his Obama impression. He was terrrific on SNL. Yet I found that bit that Seth did with him stupid and a misuse of his talents. He wasn't a big enough part of the show. He should be bigger than Guillermo on Kimmel or Richter on Conan. But, except for 1 or 2 taped pieces, Armisen hasn't been really interesting on Late Night. Also, I hated last night how they had to spend many minutes explaining and recapping FredEx, and then sending Seth's assistant out. It's getting repetitive.
  17. Tony Dungy said he made his comments to the Tampa newspaper around the time of the Oprah deal, which was mid-May. The Tampa reporter, one of the best and longest-serving NFL reporters, said he interviewed Dungy 2 weeks ago. So it had nothing to do with the reality show.
  18. Yeah, I can't imagine somebody who's been around 9 years who ascended all the way to head writer be demoted from his Weekend Update job after only 8 episodes, or 38% of the season, on the job.
  19. Kenan is currently tied for 4th with Fred Armisen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturday_Night_Live_cast_members#Notable_tenures He'll need 1 1/2 more seasons to tie Seth and 3 seasons to tie Hammond. I've written about this before, but the reason Kenan is still around is: 1) he realizes he has nowhere else to go... no sitcom, no film career, no nothing. This is the best it's going to ever get. He's not going to front a "What Up With That" variety show. That's why Seth stayed so long. And perhaps that's why Fred was around a long time, too -- until he discovered his Portlandia mojo. Yet he's still close to the Lorne fold with Late Night and Portlandia. 2) Lorne loves him...a few years back, Howard Stern had a 20-hour "SNL on Stern" radio documentary featuring fresh interviews with Lorne (not conducted by Howard), and he repeatly gushed over Kenan. He absolutely adores the guy. I've also read other cast members say that Kenan is the only one who regularly makes Lorne laugh. So, I'm guessing, Kenan doesn't want to go. And Lorne doesn't want him to go.
  20. I keep reading in various outlets that recommend Mike O'Brien replace Colin Jost on the Update desk. Is that a good idea? Also, check this out. Pretty cool: http://instagram.com/p/qjshRJr8M-/
  21. Couldn't agree more. And it's like he works really hard to come up with stories to tell.
  22. Speaking of social media, I find it cute to see something like this:
  23. No, they were just a bunch of indistinguishable white guys that took a while to figure out who was who. And because they hid behind characters, it was hard to distinguish them...But Seth Meyers would repeatedly tweet out their Twitter handles, which is how I figured out who Brooks Wheelan was. Beck Bennett is on Twitter (https://twitter.com/becbenit), but I counted only 14 tweets this year, and that's basically like not tweeting. Kyle Mooney tweets just as often, but he is of course the most distinguishable of the white guy newbies.
