As delightful as WandaVision‘s sitcom homages often were, our blood ran cold as we took in this fake commercial from Episode 6, in which a starving boy finally gets his hands on a yogurt snack while stranded on an island, only to wither away and die when he can’t peel the lid off the container. Paired with the colorful, upbeat animation of so many early-aughts snack ads, this Yo-Magic commercial was among WandaVision‘s most unexpectedly chilling sequences. When Wanda’s twin brother came a-knocking at the end of Episode 5, the jaw-dropper was not so much that the quite dead Pietro was standing on her doorstep, but that he arrived in the form of Evan Peters — who of course played Pietro/Quicksilver in the X-Men movies. (Yes, word of Peters’ casting had dribbled out days prior, but for the bulk of America that doesn’t live on Reddit, the “switcheroo” was a real treat that even had eventually Wanda scratching her head.) And while our esteemed panel of judges won’t necessarily be swayed by the Comments section, we’re itching to see if our 20 finalists line up with your favorite performances of the year. * * *ELIZABETH OLSEN, WANDAVISION ... After previously stunning us with Facebook Watch’s Sorry for Your Loss, Olsen proved with WandaVision that her range is even more expansive and formidable than we previously thought. The actress gave a fearlessly committed comedic performance as WandaVision hurtled through the history of sitcoms, channeling funny ladies like Mary Tyler Moore and Julie Bowen with remarkable ease. And later in the show’s run, her dramatic work was equally moving, imploring us all to feel the heavy weight of Wanda’s seemingly bottomless grief. With Agnes impervious to Wanda’s mind control over Westview, her sitcom characters were over-the-top in the best way, giving us — among many other standout moments — the exaggerated Episode 3 wink that became a go-to meme, and the fourth wall-breaking “Agatha All Along” song, which ended with a flawless line reading and all-out cackle from Hahn. Monica Rambeau pushed her way through the treacherous energy barrier surrounding Westview, then came out on the other side with superpowers. That part’s cool enough! Wanda and Vision (Wandavision) ... When you love someone so much you’ll create an entire alternate reality for them, you’ve definitely found the one. Wanda and Vision were an unlikely love story spanning multiple Marvel movies, but managed to grow stronger with time, despite the many life-threatening challenges both of them faced along the way. It wasn’t until Avengers: Endgame that Wanda finally lost Vision, and her grief and love for him forced her to subconsciously manifest an entirely different reality in order to keep them together, and Vision alive. Wandavision is an incredible pioneer series for many reasons, but Wanda and Vision existing in a relationship without having to save the world is one of its most precious aspects. With each episode set to a different TV show time period, Wandavision showcases how the two Avengers would thrive and exist in every decade, and every reality. While Wanda loses Vision in the end, it’s an incredible opportunity to see them marry, have children, and form a loving family. It’s what could have been if circumstances were only different, and hopefully, the two will find each other again. 2021 in Review: The 19 Best Needle Drops of the Year By Team TVLine / December 15 2021https://tvline.com/lists/best-tv-music-2021-soundtracks-songs/ Quote WandaVision, 'Agatha All Along' (Season 1, Episode 7) ... We are bending the rules a bit with this one, as “Agatha All Along” was an original ditty and not a previously beloved song. But of all the perfectly timed musical moments on this list, the reveal of Agatha Harkness’ true power was perhaps the most memorable, with the Emmy-winning tune elevating this Episode 7 twist from “Yeah, we kinda saw that coming” to “And she killed Sparky, too?!” Bonus points to Kathryn Hahn for adding her own singing to the number, along with some wonderfully wicked cackles. The heady ambitions of that series premiere — so different from any of the MCU projects that came before it, in both style and scope — placed Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany's super-couple in a classic TV sitcom of Wanda's magical design, shot in front of a studio audience and filmed in vintage black-and-white. Fans didn't know yet how deeply WandaVision's visions of TV escapism and meditations on grief would resonate during lockdown — or that Kathryn Hahn's Agnes would become her own witchy scene-stealer — but even from those opening moments it was clear the show was taking the Marvel universe into a bigger, bolder new direction. —Jessica Derschowitz Edited December 17, 2021 by tv echo 1 1 Link to comment

(If we never hear the name "Mephisto" ever again, it'll be too soon.) But the moment that really sent fans into a theorizing tizzy was the arrival of Wanda's long-dead brother Pietro Maximoff, a.k.a. Quicksilver, at the end of episode 5. Except he wasn't played by MCU actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson… He was X-Men's Evan Peters, a.k.a. the other Quicksilver, from a different universe entirely. The eventual reveal of Ralph Bohner's true identity split fans: Some were hoping Peters' arrival was proof of a future X-Men crossover, while others found the Ralph reveal to be a masterful bit of trolling. Either way, we can all agree that Wanda opening the door to find her dead brother wearing a different face was a major WTF moment. —D.C. Edited December 18, 2021 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

But it was a line from Vision in the Disney+ series' penultimate episode, "Previously On," that struck a chord with so many of us. As Wanda is forced by fellow witch Agatha (Kathryn Hahn) to revisit past traumatic moments in her life, we see a tender exchange between her and Vision following the death of Wanda's brother, Pietro, in which he offers her these words of comfort: "But what is grief, if not love persevering?" After a year filled with so much isolation and loss, Wanda wasn't the only one who took them to heart. —J.D. Edited December 19, 2021 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

What started as a charming pastiche mixing classic sitcom television and the deepest of Marvel Comics lore became a strikingly effective character study for two of the most shafted Avengers. Wanda Maximoff is living in a world of I Love Lucy bliss with her loving husband Vision, but things in the cutesy, all-American town of Westview are not as they seem. Why are Wanda and Vision trapped in a TV sitcom? Isn't Vision supposed to be dead? Is anyone coming to get them out? WandaVision's sunny exterior hides a darkness within, and turns a sprightly homage-driven series into an examination of grief on a chaotic, interdimentional scale, not to mention an action-packed lead-in to the MCU's Phase Four. It's worth watching for Vision's cozy sweaters alone. —ES The 27 Best Sci-Fi and Fantasy TV Shows of 2021 By Emma Stefansky December 29, 2021https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/best-fantasy-sci-fi-tv-shows-of-2021 Quote WandaVision (Disney+) Miniseries. 9 episodes. The first of Marvel's Disney+ miniseries started Phase 4 off with a bang, trapping Wanda Maximoff and a mysteriously resurrected Vision in a small-town sitcom universe, riffing on classic family comedies like Bewitched, The Brady Bunch, and Malcolm in the Middle. When a grief-stricken Wanda attempts to create her own idyllic family life, her creation goes nuclear in more ways than one, and reveals a new facet to her chaotic superpowers. The show is both fun and emotionally affecting, and will have lasting implications for the next stage of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Link to comment

Matt Shakman, the series’ director, talked about how they thought of “this particular episode as kind of A Christmas Carol:” "We talk about this particular episode as kind of A Christmas Carol… and Agnes is the Ghost of Christmas Past, in a way. She's taking Wanda on this trip through her life, and she wants to learn a crucial piece of information, which is: How does Wanda have this power to create things from whole cloth? She takes her through all of these formative events in her life in order to try to figure out what that secret sauce is." Then, Senior Visual Development Artist Jana Schirmer, who drew the concept art seen below, revealed how the episode once looked a lot different. * * *"In the original concept of this, Agatha would take Wanda on movie sets that represented her past, so that's why the background in this one looks like a movie set... You have the background with the cameras and the lights, so much more like a movie set, where in the show, it became more of a full visualization. It was fun to do this really Eastern European background with the wallpaper and stuff like that. I definitely feel like I've seen that aesthetic before in older homes." WANDAVISION (2021) ...WandaVision takes quite a while to reveal its agenda as yet another post-Avengers: Endgame story about navigating grief and loss. It starts with its central character, Wanda Maximoff, in complete denial, having created her own cheery sitcom reality with a re-creation of her dead love, Vision. The series creators play around with that faux reality, jumping through decades of sitcom styles and generally having more fun with design, direction, and overall style than any MCU show so far. That freedom to creatively explore her character while being outright weird is one of the two biggest things that makes WandaVision a standout. The other is the depth of the series’ emotions, as Wanda navigates her own rage, guilt, and selfishness on top of everything else. The series wraps up messily, with plenty of loose ends that it means to set up future movies, so it never feels like a fully self-contained story, but it certainly is a wild ride while it lasts. —TR 1 Link to comment

Marvel's Disney Plus series have frequently proven to be among the MCU's grandest efforts, and WandaVision is the streaming service's best show to date. Its storyline follows Wanda and Vision as they live a suburban life in Westview with their children, Billy and Tommy. WandaVision expertly captures the unique stylings of various American sitcoms, with Wanda using her extraordinary powers to trap the town's residents inside the U.S. comedy genre. The show boasts a hilarious screenplay, as Wanda and Vision embark on several entertaining scenarios, such as a magic show and Halloween trick-or-treating. shantown July 23, 2023 Share July 23, 2023 Maybe I'm just old and/or unhip, but what on earth is a "steelbook"? Because I can't imagine paying $90 for what seems like is a metal DVD case without any DVDs. 3 Link to comment
AnimeMania July 24, 2023 Share July 24, 2023 5 hours ago, shantown said: Maybe I'm just old and/or unhip, but what on earth is a "steelbook"? Because I can't imagine paying $90 for what seems like is a metal DVD case without any DVDs. Welcome to SteelBook®! What is a SteelBook® case? Simply put, it is the world's most prestigious and highly-sought after collectible packaging for home entertainment media such as Blu-ray and Games. Prized by fans and collectors for its iconic design, luxurious finish and ability to showcase artwork, the SteelBook® case is a premium metal case that represents the ultimate way to store your favorite movies and games. DESIGN AND ART Often produced in limited edition print runs, which makes them especially highly desirable with collectors, SteelBook® cases have a weight, precision and quality that is unlike any other packaging. There is no better canvas on which to showcase artwork, and film fans are thrilled when they discover the wonderful, often specially commissioned, designs that are used on SteelBook® editions. Not only are the artworks created for SteelBook® cases usually the most beautiful of any product released by distributors, but they often incorporate design attributes that only printing on metal can give. A unique aspect of SteelBook® packaging that makes it such an exciting product, is the ability to achieve an almost limitless array of incredible finishes. Three particular techniques that can be used to enhance SteelBook® cases are worth highlighting. DECORATIONS Embossing/Debossing: Embossing or debossing part of the design into the steel can help provide a three-dimensional effect to the artwork. This can make the SteelBook® case even more beautiful and tactile. Use of White: With regular printing of artwork on paper, white is the base colour of the paper. However with SteelBook® case the base colour is the metal layer of the steel itself. A white layer is usually first printed onto the steel before any other colours are applied. One of the most important techniques that can be used with SteelBook® cases is to use the white layer in a creative way to enhance the design. If the SteelBook® edition is intended to look metallic, or have areas where the metal needs to show through, then white is removed from those areas. Where the artwork needs to look bright and very colourful, then a very opaque white layer is used. By carefully varying the opacity of the white layer within the artwork, it is possible to create some truly amazing and unique pieces of art. When colours are printed onto the steel with no white layer underneath, they will take on a metallic sheen to them. The interaction between those three elements: the base steel, the white layer and the final colours printed on top, not only allows for an enormous level of creativity, but can play a vital role is how the final SteelBook® case is perceived by collectors. Scanavo’s creative team is happy advising you or your creative agency on how to best utilize the white layer in your artwork, to ensure the perfect final result. Varnish: Once the SteelBook® edition’s artwork has been printed, a final layer of varnish is applied to seal in the artwork. The choice of varnish applied will have a dramatic effect on colours. A gloss finish brings out brighter colours, and gives blacker blacks. Conversely a matte finish tends to create a subtler, more muted palette. Not only does the varnish dramatically affect the intensity of the colours, but it can have an impact on the tactile feel of the final SteelBook® product. Matt varnished SteelBooks® case for instance can feel wonderfully silky and sensual to the touch. Partial varnish options are also available, meaning, for instance, that a SteelBook® case that is mostly a matt finish could have selected elements given a gloss finish, which will highlight these further. Lastly, varnish techniques can be creatively used to apply a texture to the final design. 1 1 Link to comment
shantown July 24, 2023 Share July 24, 2023 Thanks for sharing. Seems like a lot of buzzwords to say "A metal DVD case without any DVDs in it... but it's FANCY!" LOL. I'm definitely not the intended audience for this. I wouldn't mind owning the show on DVD, but just a regular plastic case works just fine! 4 Link to comment
tv echo July 26, 2023 Share July 26, 2023 (edited) Disc-Less (!) WandaVision Steelbook That Riled Fans Is Not a Marvel Product (Report) BY MATT WEBB MITOVICH JULY 25, 2023 https://tvline.com/news/wandavision-steelbook-dvd-blu-ray-release-not-official-1235018523/ Quote The second rug-pull came when industry insider Bill Hunt, founder of The Digital Bits, reported on Twitter that the Manta Lab product “is NOT an official Marvel Studios home video product,” and that while Manta “apparently” makes legitimate Blu-ray packaging for collectors, the WandaVision steelbook “may or may not be licensed.” (The product shot, shown at right, says in mouse type on the bottom, “PENDING LICENSOR APPROVAL.”) A Disney source then told Hunt, “While Manta Lab is a legit licensee of Disney, and does create custom Steelbooks for Disney Blu-ray titles through Disney Consumer Products, the pre-order for a disc-less WandaVision was a surprise to some and we are looking into it as well as speaking to our partners in market.” Edited July 26, 2023 by tv echo 1 Link to comment

tv echo November 13, 2023 Share November 13, 2023 The 25 best TV miniseries of all time By Jeff Mezydlo Updated 1 day ago https://www.yardbarker.com/entertainment/articles/the_25_best_tv_miniseries_of_all_time_111223/s1__33231407 Quote 'WandaVision' (2021) ... There have been several Marvel miniseries come and gone over the past few years, but WandaVision remains the golf standard for the moment. The consistent homage to those classic sitcoms is a brilliant touch, but the chemistry between Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) is really what makes the show hum. There was a lot of human emotion displayed by two superhuman characters, and for better or worse, it's a strength of the show. Not to mention, Kathryn Hahn, who is simply superb as the nosey neighbor/villain, and perhaps the highlight of the entire show. 1 Link to comment
tv echo November 17, 2023 Share November 17, 2023 No surprise... Will WandaVision Season 2 Happen? Director Gives Update (Exclusive) By Russ Milheim Posted: November 16, 2023 https://thedirect.com/article/wandavision-season-2-happen-exclusive Quote In an exclusive interview with The Direct’s Russ Milheim, WandaVision and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters director Matt Shakman revealed whether or not fans should still hold out hope for a proper Season 2 of his hit Marvel Disney+ series. * * * “I don't think so, you know, we were telling a very specific story, a complete story; a story about grief, about Wanda's journey, having lost Vision, and we completed that story. And Jac Schaeffer is an amazing writer who wrote 'WandaVision', [and she] has created a show called 'Agatha'.” * * * “[‘Agatha is] not a 'WandaVision' Season 2, but it's definitely existing in that universe, of course, and with some of the characters that you met on that show, Agatha, in particular… So, you know, there are elements of 'WandaVision' that are out there still in their own way. But, a proper WandaVision Season 2, with more sitcom styles, and all of that is definitely not in the cards.” 1 Link to comment
