True Blood Discussion: Best and Worst

Recommended Posts

With the show going into it's last season it's too late to have have fresh episode discussions. Thought it would be nice to discuss the show as a whole.  I have been watching the show on On Demand for the last month (for the first time)  and just finished Season 5 episode 8.

I love the show and I hate the show. Usually just when I think I can't watch another second, something awesome will happen.

Let me start with Sookie since she is the central character.  I don't hate the character but I do hate her fairy vagina and the fact that everyone is in love with her.  I don't see it.  So I just reconcile it in my brain with her blood being the draw, not her particularly. The Sookie/Bill relationship I don't care for at all. And while I enjoyed the amnesiac Eric I thought it was a bit of a cop out because honestly the potential of a Sookie/Eric hook up was an interesting proposition.  Real Eric.  I like Sookie best when she is with Jason, Lafayette and Tara.

I do love all the vamps: Bill, Jessica, Eric and Pam.  Season 1 Tara was one of my favorite characters and I just hate that she became victim Tara. But I loved it as she took back her power. Unfortunately she had to die saving Sookie but vampire Tara is the best she's been since season 1. Bill as King and maker are my favorite Bill. And I always tend to love the Eric stuff, no matter what he's doing.

My favorite character on this show is Lafayette and the most believable love story on the show was lafayette and Jesus. Sorry they killed Jesus off.  But even his dead scenes seemed more meaningful than most of the other so-called couples. Maybe I'm influenced by my love for Southland.  I liked that Lafayette became a medium and everything that has been involved in that so far.  And hopefully he'll have something to do in the last 2 1/2 seasons that I have left to watch.  Alfre Woodard, as his mom - well that woman can do no wrong in my book.

While on the one hand Jason seemed to have little care taken with his storylines - his character has shown the most growth.  And I have to say it. I think he is one of the best actors on this show if not the best and he could sell it all. I think the underlying sweetness in Jason is what saved that character from being some sort of caricature.. He seems to have chemistry with everyone from Sookie to Andy to Jessica to the Reverend.  Glad he was not a werepanther and so far (please don't let me down) is just human.  Does anyone think him having sex with that teacher again in season 5 (I think) made him realize he had been molested by her as a child.  To me that seem to hit him like a ton of bricks.

There are stories and characters I haven't touched on but hope this can be a thread to discuss all of it.

I just started watching this series a few months ago and I thought I was hooked after watching season 1. But oh no, season two started slipping down the slope and there was no climbing back up after that. I've watched all episodes through the end of Season 5 and good lord...what happened?

I have ended up disliking most of the main characters: SNOOKIE (I too, do not understand what it is the men are so captivated by) BILL (because he likes Sookie so much). TARA- started out great but it appears they just didn't know what to do with her character so they came up with some stupid idea to make her a lesbian vamp.

I do still love my LaFayette.I will watch til the bitter end only for him. I love Sam Merlotte but I'm sick of him not being in a solid relationship.I do hope that Pam and Eric stay together.

What is wrong with these people who get paid tons of money to write the scripts but just can't seem to be creative? It kind of feels like I just bought a new expensive car with leather interior, a sunroof, Bose stereo etc and now it's breaking down on me every 4 months or so.

PS Did I mention I can't stand SOOKIE?

Angelita100, I agree with you about Jason.  I like him a lot, which is surprising because I did not like book Jason at all.  The actor is amazing in that role and I think he should take all the credit since his storylines tend to suck.  That scene where Jason pulls over Hoyt as he's leaving town, then goes back to his car and breaks down with Sookie - I'm tearing up again just thinking about it.  And I definitely think Jason had a realization that he was molested.  I think the best of Jason was when he came back to town after it was taken over, and he was in Sam's bar preparing for battle.

The worst for me is the were pack politics, and the fairy business.  I stopped reading the books after the one with the were tiger.  I like Alcide and I can tolerate small moments with his father, but otherwise I don't like any of the were species.

I think any scenes made up of Sookie, Jason, Lafayette, and Tara are made of gold.

I hope every character's storyline ends happily.  I'm not crazy about Sam's pregnant girlfriend or Jessica's guy.  If Jessica can't be with Hoyt, I'd like her with Jason.  It's time to get over their guilt - Hoyt doesn't even remember it.  I actually liked the five minutes that Sam and Tara were together.

Everyone may love Sookie, but she's been with what? 3 people? Bill, Eric, and Alcide. Oh, I forgot Warlow. (I'm on season 4 of my re-watch, and really, who can be blamed for forgetting Warlow? In fact, I think I'll go forget him again.) Sure, Sam had a thing for Sookie, but that was really season 1, where they followed the books, and not so much later on.

Tara on the other hand was with Sam, Eggs, Sam again, Franklin, that other girl fighter whom I forget the name of when she was pretending to be Toni, and Pam. But by Season 4 and more than halfway through Tara had been with more people.

Sam liked Sookie, but nothing happened, had Tara, Daphne, then Tara again, Luna, pregnant girlfriend.

Jason had Maudette, Dawn, Amy, Crystal, Jessica.

Don't get me wrong, I hate the magical fairy vagina specialness as much as the next person, but in the books it was actually much worse. (Especially if you add in the short stories as well.) Either way there were lots of people fucking all over the place and in an ensemble there really isn't a main person. She is the main person in the books, and of course the main person will be a special snowflake and some of that translated over to the show.

But the people who complain about how every loves Sookie in the show's universe aren't exactly hurting for attention either. And I can't really blame Pam either, I mean she was pretty much with Eric since she was made vampire. And Debbie Pelt isn't exactly a model of stability. Of course the fairies like her, she's family.

I guess my point is, it's not much worse than any other soap opera, in fact aside from the nudity the pairings are quite tame and low. As ridiculous as the stories have gotten, it's one thing I've always liked about the show over the books is that the show isn't nearly as much all about Sookie. Even with a magical fairy vagina involved.

I hate the werewolves.  All of them.  They were at least relevant to the rest of the show in the third season when they were muscle for Russell Edgington, but since then they've seemingly existed only as a reason to keep Alcide on the show and get him naked on a regular basis.  Since Alcide is Sookie's current boyfriend, I'm sure we'll be subjected to more of their boring politics and general trashiness though.

I've never understood the appeal of Sookie either, magical fairy vagina aside.  Every character who's been in a relationship with her has been made worse by it and got more interesting when they uncoupled from her.

I'm with you on the weres (Add the W-panthers to my hate as well) but... I'm hopeful that Alcide will just vanish at some point in the next couple of episodes when Sookie dumps his ass. We'll have plenty going on with Bon Temps that we can skip revisiting the pack ever again...

Totally hated the werewolves and were-panthers (especially)

Really loved Godric and wish his arc hadn't ended how it did. Well, I mean, it was beautiful, but he was so cool I wish he had had a bigger role in the show, with maybe still the same ending ultimately.

Most of what I liked was in the first 3 seasons, since then it's mostly just been annoying. EVerything with the faries = can't stand it. Warlow = ugh, not at all what I thought it was going to be an terrible.

As I've mentioned, I'm doing the whole re-watch thing, and I think I've figured out why I  disliked season 6 so much; it really feels to me like one of those writing things I used to do with my friends where we would each start a story, write in the time provided, and then fold the paper over leaving only a sentence showing. Then we passed the paper along and the next person had to continue the story based on that sentence they could read. And then it just kept getting passed around.

It's just so disjointed with Lost proportions of making shit up from episode to episode. I always felt like the Andy's daughters thing only happened because Anna Paquin got pregnant with twins in the middle of the shooting, so they probably had to toss whatever plans they had and then just run with it. But just watching this season, I think that was a little optimistic to think they had any sort of plan at all.

And oh my god, the merkin. I can see it under the dress. I think that NSFW - merkin - NSFW tops the worst list. (That link is absolutely NOT safe for work. Or sanity.) I need to drink now.

Sookie reminds me of Claire Bennett from Heroes and Skye from Agents of SHIELD.  She's special because her blood and abilities make her so, not because she's a fascinating person.  These characters are supposedly so wonderful, so important that people will literally kill to save them (although Skye has improved).  And for some reason, the writers make these special snowflakes the focal point of the show, and then wonder why viewers don't want to watch them.  Pretty sure there's a trope for this.

Long time ago (season two, I think) Sookie and Bill were talking about what their life could be like if they left the town to start somewhere fresh.  Bill wanted to be an elementary school teacher, and Sookie wanted to go to college.  I was thinking "And do what?"  Even now, she has zero interest of the outside world beyond Bon Temps and she's shown no inclination in leaving, even as she whines that she's sick of vampires.

Really loved Godric and wish his arc hadn't ended how it did. Well, I mean, it was beautiful, but he was so cool I wish he had had a bigger role in the show, with maybe still the same ending ultimately.

Considering that Godric has made several appearances since he met the true death, I'm thinking the writers were kicking themselves for killing him off so soon.

Sam and Tara were the best pairing that never happened.  It makes no sense why the writers decided to end it.  Such great chemistry and they actually made sense.

However, Sam hooking up with Nicole (Jurnee Smollett) has to be one of the worst pairings in the history of the show.  We knew it was going to happen, but Luna hadn't been dead a full day before they shacked up.  And Nicole got pregnant, to boot.  Even for True Blood standards, this hookup was tasteless and tacky.  Much as I like Jurnee, I was hoping Nicole would get killed off in the premiere.

Not only did she get pregnant, but they could smell it on her. I mean, that far along and Alcide asked if it was Sam's and he said it smelled like him. Keeping in mind sperm can hang around a couple of days and do have some travel time did she go out to the machine and get something to eat and come back pregnant, or is more like a fart where she smelled normal one second, and the next second she was pregnant.

Shifters and weres could make a lot of money off talent like that. Find out even before the drugstore and you don't even have to pee!

Also, I've not been pregnant before but she seemed really BIG for 6 months. Is she having twins?

Oh my god this still infuriates me so fucking much and this is coming from someone who didn't even really like Luna and thinks Jurnee is made of awesome. Sam who for all intents and purposes, is totally in love with Luna. Not only that, he loves her daughter as well and wants them all to be a happy family blah blah blah. He willingly risks his life in order so save them both on numerous occasions. Again, I wasn't that into them, but still. Sam loved her the most and all that jazz. She dies because she skinwalked one to many damn times and Sam takes Emma and the stupid do-gooder college student (right?) as they run from the dumb werewolves. Then, Sam has his "Oh, I'm so grief stricken and I just want the pain to go away for a minute." attitude and this show being tacky and gross decided he should find said solace in a new vagina in what I'm pretty sure was, like less than 12 hours since Luna died.

And to make it all worse was that he fucked the new girl in the room next to Emma. You remember Emma right, Sam? She's the little girl who you were going to help raise with the woman who just died. In your arms. Who you allegedly loved so much. That little girl probably need someone to talk to right now because her MOTHER JUST DIED, but no. YOu go on ahead a sex up the new hot girl. Asshole.

Just........RAGE!

How funny would it have been if Emma walked into the room while Sam and Nicole were getting busy?  "Hey Sam, maybe we can pick up my mom's body later...hey, why are you on top of that lady?"

In all seriousness, I wasn't a fan of Luna either, but this is flat out gross and disrespectful.  Plus, Sam playing happy family with a woman he literally just met makes his whole plot for the last two years to be a complete waste of time.  I've seen soap opera characters with a slower turnaround.  They can spin Sam/Nicole into some "true love" pairing all they want, but it's crap and they know it.  Just call it what it is: some grief sex/one night stand that ended up in a pregnancy.

I'm thinking that the writers knew TBs days were numbered and scrambled to give Sam a happy ending.

You know who he could have been happy with?  Tara.

I'm just sayin'.

LOL!

Maybe shifter babies have quicker gestation periods?  Six months could be like nine months to them.

But this is True Blood, where logic is nonexistent, so the baby just might be big.  I didn't really see Nicole's stomach.  Maybe she's carrying high.  That can make a baby look bigger.

I wasn't terribly invested in the Same/Luna romance either although I did enjoy some of their adventures trying to get Emma back from Steve Newlin at the Vampire Authority.  But then Luna died and a day later before the body was even cold Sam took up with a college student half his age.  Out of sight out of mind, I suppose, which explains why Sam seems to have forgotten all about Emma too.  I was completely DONE with the werewolves by that point and fastforwarding through most of this, but my impression was that the whole Luna/Emma story he'd wasted a couple seasons on was completely forgotten once he got his own happy family.

I thought the implications of this were pretty gross, particularly if you take them to their logical conclusion.   Can they smell it when you've had sex with someone?  Maybe that's what's made both Sam and Alcide so pissy and territorial around Sookie at various points.  Although vampires wouldn't have sperm, right?  It makes my head hurt to contemplate that.

Rewatching some of the marathon recently because it's summer and hey, I was bored, I thought the same thing.  It might have been a much different and better show had they kept Godric around as sort of an elder voice of vampire wisdom and conscience.  It certainly might have saved us from most of a season of all hail the vampire god Lilith/kill all the humans and bring retribution on ourselves nonsense.

Ugh.. while I do agree with ya'll and not to defend Sam's sudden love... but I do think Luna was dead more than 12 hours before he got busy with Nicole... a lot happened in those couple of days (not that 2 days is any better than 12 hours) But I wish they would have just let Luna live... but they needed a dumb reason for the dumb werewolves to continue being dumb jerks.

I still don't get why Alcide and the werebitches had to beat up Lafayette and Sam... how about let Emma have a night to like calm down before you steal her away from Sam- who she wanted to stay with. A reasonable discussion would have probably led to the same conclusion of Emma with her grandmother and away from the pack was the best idea for everyone, and it would have kept Sam away from Nicole and her stupid friends.

I also think they needed a reason for Sam to be absolutely unavailable when Sookie came looking for a lifeline. Everybody seems to fall prey to crappy plot points that need to happen.

All that said and despite how ridiculously they had the relationship start, I hope they let Nicole and her baby survive. Sam has now been with her for 6 months, which like most of the people in BT, it's the longest relationship we've ever seen him have. Everyone he has sex with dies (including Tara, twice!) so it'd be nice for once if that doesn't happen.

Now I sort of wish Sam and Tara only had sex twice. That would have been awesomely prophetic.

Thinking more about it, it would make Sam's dick sort of the Anti Sookie's magical fairy vagina.

I wonder if they would cancel each other out, or explode or something if they ever had sex.

They could've done that without shitting over Luna's memory anyway.

But like others have said, I want Sam to have some sort of happy ending when all's said and done. I didn't realize how all his exes end up dead until now. Lol!

The one good thing S6 had going for it was recircling the focus to one kind of magical creature (the vamps) instead of spreading focus so thin on Were-Everythings, fairies, witches, mediums, shifters, whatever the fuck Maryanne was...this show was going into season 5 Glee territory in focus, and I did like having just one main focus.

I hated the werepanthers and their using Jason for stud story so much I completely blocked it from my memory until now. Mercifully, we at least haven't revisited that one.

Yeah, the show did gloss over what was pretty much a gangbang. I'm not sure to be glad for that because nothing good story wise would come of it, or disturbed at the trend on tv about male rape being downplayed at best, played as a joke or in the case of "the Young and the Restless" a few years ago, the victim being treated as a deadbeat for not supporting a baby conceived while drugged and thinking the rapist was his wife.

I'm rewatching now and at the end of season 4.  God, I can't stand Tara.  I liked her okay during the first season but after that, she does nothing but cause trouble for Sookie and the vamps, all while acting self-righteous and condescending.

Maybe the worst character ever - - that stupid were-panther Crystal that Jason fell in love with after about 10 seconds.  Hated that entire storyline.

Best parts are Sookie, Godric, Jessica, Eric and Pam.  I liked Bill in the early seasons but once he became Vampire King of Louisiana he was a real dick.
