S02E02: The City's Not for Burning

Recommended Posts

So, it certainly looks like Mary has a split personality and one of them might be just a wee bit of a stalker for Danny!  Colleen better watch herself, but thankfully she already seems to be noticing that she's "odd."

Danny and Colleen preventing an all out Triad war ends up having consequences, as it causes Davos to murder Yang, which is probably going to cause a whole bunch of problems for everyone in Chinatown.

More Ward/Joy, please.  Those two together are so twisted, but so entertaining.

I guess once Davos is done taking out Danny, he's going to go after the sun itself next since that was the bastard that helped Danny win the match!

I love Ward. He is still the best character on this show. I hope they give him more to do. He got a little sidelined at the end of season 1, but he was the most nuanced character, with the best arc.

I find it kind of sad that Marvel comics doesn't seem to have any Asian gangs other than the Hand, but I'm really hard pressed to think of one. So instead we get the Triads, which just seems a bit of a letdown. In spite of that, the story seems solid enough.

Joy's motivations still seem sketchy to me. I get Davos' anger and search for revenge, but Joy's turn to the dark side came so abruptly at the end of S1 that it caused some whiplash. Jessica Stroup is doing a great job of portraying Joy's inner turmoil, but sadly the writers don't seem to be able (yet?) to really give her a convincing motivation, so there is a disconnect to me. Plus, I frankly miss Joy and Ward playing on the same team.

Mary (I almost spoiled things there for a second by mistyping something) is currently a very odd duck in this picture, almost glaringly so. Her "Single White Female" storyline just doesn't seem to fit into the overall arc of this season. I know part of it, to me, is that she is a character that should be in another Netflix show- and one for whom I have an incredible fondness (for the creator of Mary and her work on that other character's title). I'm interested to see how/if the storyline comes together, but so far it is falling pretty flat to me. I will say that the writers are doing a pretty good job with playing up the creepiness without giving away the whole kitten caboodle (based on some other comments I've seen from viewers), so that is at least a feather in their cap with the story.

Liked this one too. Danny on the street working with Colleen is way better than rich guy problems Danny. The flashback fight was good too, and the repeated punches to the head explains why Danny is a bit of a dummy.

The only thing stupid was Davos and Joy's blackmail plan. Because with that lady, cheating on her husband is probably no surprise to anyone and hardly something anyone could blackmail her over. Unless Davos is secretly 12 years old.

I was thinking this too. She seemed like she didn't even think twice about doing it. So I bet she had before. I love the Colleen and Danny working together.

Mary definitely has multi- personalities. She seemed normal when he saw her at the store and abruptly changed right before they went into his place.

Mary definitely seems to have a multiple personality situation going on, and if she is the comic character that I think she is, that is going to be very interesting. I have always liked Alice Eve, so its fun seeing her here getting what looks like some juicy material. Although, one of her personas seems a bit stalker-y, so Colleen better watch her man!

I love Joy and Ward. Their both twisted, but super interesting, and throwing Danny in is actually working well so far this year. I also like Davos showing up at all of Joys rich people events just standing around looking pissed off.

Danny and Colleen are a really good team, and I love how stable they are right now. She actually manages to get him to think about stuff before running off to do whatever!

Loved the banter between Colleen and BB--stupidest name ever, and Ward and his assistant. And going by how these shows go, BB and/or the assistant, and Ward's sponsor from the previous episode, will all probably be dead by season's end. It's sad, and I'll cherish the time this season BB.

So, Mary and Davos keep getting and creepier and scarier. I'm still not feeling Joy's place in all this. Mary just seems so disconnected from the story at the moment. I don't want to see her intertwined into the main narrative by chance. I want to spoil the character but I won't.

As awesome as Danny and Colleen are, still doesn't hold a candle to Misty and Colleen.

Does anyone else kind of love how Ward seems to regard Joy like an ex-girlfriend he's still possessive of? LOL. Tom Pelphrey is really good at playing twisted people.

Alice Eve is one of those former ingenues that just couldn't quite get the right project to leap her into the big leagues, so it's nice to see her getting to play an interesting character. Danny does look way more attractive this year, so I can't blame her. LOL.

Davos is twisted as hell and I'm into this. Good.
