Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Vet Side-Eyes Disney CEO’s Slighting of Past Marvel Series

Clark Gregg, the onetime front man for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — sorry, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. — had to raise an eyebrow at a perceived slighting of the first contemporary live-action Marvel series.
*  *  *
“Marvel’s a great example of that,” Iger continued. “They had not been in the TV business at any significant level.” (Emphasis ours.) “Not only did they increase their movie output, but they ended up making a number of television series, and frankly, it diluted focus and attention.”

Gregg, a veteran of ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. (and currently a recurring player on Hulu’s How I Met Your Father), quote-tweeted a summary of Iger’s drive-by diss, adding a simple but felt, “Bro…”

Jemma Simmons, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2013-2020)
...
From a young and eager biochemist recruited out of a S.H.I.E.L.D. lab to join Phil Coulson on their “journey into mystery” to a seasoned agent who survived harrowing ordeals, Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) did a lot of growing up on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. She had already earned two PhDs by the time S.H.I.E.L.D. recruited her to its academy, and would become one of its youngest graduates ever, along with her partner, best friend, and future husband Leo Fitz. During her time on Coulson’s team she made multiple scientific breakthroughs, including the development of a paralyzing dendrotoxin for the I.C.E.R. weapons and the discovery of a cure for a Chitauri virus while she herself was infected with it. She also became an expert in Inhuman biology after her teammate Skye (a.k.a. Daisy Johnson) was exposed to the mutagenic Terrigen mist. Throughout her adventures in time and space, she never wavered in her commitment to the ideals that drew her to S.H.I.E.L.D. in the first place.

While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't the traditional time travel show, it absolutely counts. Time travel was a theme in the first couple of seasons, but became the sole transport method in the last three seasons. The show didn't start with time travel in its plot line, but it has the perfect platform to make that shift since superhero content leaves little for impossibility. The series adapted well to time travel. It integrated its characters seamlessly into every era they were in with costumes, sets, and individual development. The final season had the team in a different time each episode, which returned the series to its episodic case pattern from season 1.

30 MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D.
...
Capping a rather unexpectedly stellar season, and across an at-times thrilling two hours, the series-ender served up great fights (including Daisy versus a Quake-ified younger Malick), timey-wimey exposition dumps (Fitz has been where/when all season long?!), incredibly heartwarming reveals (Hey, Alya!), a parade of perfect, individual epilogues in the closing act… and one bit of Marvel-ous, out-of-this-world fan service (S.W.O.R.D., anyone?). — M.W.M.

From Fan Expo Chicago on Aug. 17...

Not a chance on Quake/Daisy Johnson , the Whedon's get paid if they use any character that first appeared on ABC TV.  Few franchises are like Star Trek in that they are willing to pay that price. And in this case more is in play since  Joss Whedon has been cancelled due to his Buffy years behavior. .

If so that's a shame...to punish Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen (the actual showrunners) because of Joss Whedon's actions. My understanding is Joss was barely involved after season 1...

Also wondering if it helps that Daisy Johnson is a character from the comics... would the Whedons still get paid when she's technically not their own original character?

If my Star Trek writer friend is correct it makes no difference. Taking an on TV first character, even those from other media or public domain like Thor, to the movies or another TV show still the rights go to that first TV creator.

He figures that's part of the reason MCU Thor wasn't a human doctor and converted Shazam like into the Thunder God like the original Marvel TV Thor did.

The 10 Best Superhero Origin Story Shows, Ranked

'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' (2013-2020)
Created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen

...
While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is a show about numerous heroes, one in particular has an incredible origin story – Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet). She starts out as nothing more than an orphan hacker working with an anti-establishment organization known as The Rising Tide before being apprehended by Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) and S.H.I.E.L.D. Viewers watch as she slowly but surely becomes an agent herself, but also as some of her heritage comes to light in the form of an 805 (object of unknown origin). This 805 happens to be an ancient obelisk, something Kree that only Inhumans can touch.

Well, Daisy touches it and gets earthquake powers. It is amazing to watch her character go from living in a van to becoming one of the most powerful people on the planet, helping her team take out HYDRA and other criminals trying to take over the world. The series is one of the better origin stories, as each season shows Daisy growing stronger, more comfortable with her powers, and becoming a leader of the team, even if she does pass over the role of Director. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. weaves together events taking place throughout the MCU into its plot, giving viewers new information on what is going on in the background while the Avengers are fighting in the foreground.

Agents Of SHIELD Star Addresses Her MCU Return After Phase 4 Rumors That Wouldn't Go Away - "I Don't Think I'm Done"
By Andy Behbakht   Nov 19, 2024

In a new interview with Eric Goldman's Cultured Pop, Chloe Bennet addressed the prospect of returning to the MCU as her iconic Agents of SHIELD character, Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake, after she was heavily rumored to be back for Phase 4 initially. While not knowing if anything is on the table for the time being, Bennet stressed the "power of the fanbase", and the fresh story opportunities that bringing the character back would create, as she stated the following:

Cultured Pop: So there were all of these false rumors last year about you coming back. But is it cool just to see that obviously there's a passionate group who still want this to happen so much that a rumor like that can spread in that way?

Chloe Bennet: It really is. Obviously, I've always known the power of the fanbase for S.H.I.E.L.D. We're small but mighty, or whatever it was called on the show. But I honestly have been surprised by the continuous fervor this far out from the end of the show. People really thought I... Clark [Gregg] at one point called me and was like, "Dude, you're doing this and you didn't tell me?!" I'm like, "Dude, I'm not! I'm not doing it!" I had to ask my team “Am I in this and I don't know?" They're like "You're not."

We're really just not included in the new Marvel - whatever universe they're in now. Which is, I'll say it here, a shame for Marvel. I think they're undermining a fanbase and all these characters that I think have much bigger of an impact than people maybe realize. And I would love to do something again. I don't think I'm done playing Daisy. That's not saying I know anything. I've never been approached to do anything. It just doesn't... I just didn't feel like I'm done. Right now, with Interior Chinatown, I'm working on the thing that I've been most proud of and it's a really really fun project. But I carry Skye, or Daisy, within me. She's there!

Cultured Pop: Knowing nothing myself, I also agree that one day, it feels like they’re gonna say “Yeah, it’s time we do this.”

Chloe Bennet: I do think they can't deny it. If people still are re-watching it... And I would love to do it again now, now having had space away from the project. I was 20 to 27 doing the show. I was a child! I'd be interested in playing Daisy as a real adult.
