SWLinPHX March 7, 2018 Share March 7, 2018 Do you think it was right or wrong for Mrs. Baskets to volunteer Martha for the stage lap dance to get her to loosen up? I kinda feel like Vegas isn't Martha's thing. 4 Link to comment
Ms Lark March 7, 2018 Share March 7, 2018 It's hard to say. Christine's heart was in the right place (it usually is), but Martha is one sad sack doormat with no sense of humor nor ability to play along. A raging wet blanket. Does she have any interests whatsoever? Should have never gone to Vegas in the first place and should have just gone back to the room and let Christine go to the club with the girls. She did finally stand up for herself and it's true, Christine doesn't always listen. I hated that she stuck up for Dale, though. Dale is one rotten piece of crap. 5 Link to comment
peeayebee March 7, 2018 Share March 7, 2018 I think it was wrong for Christine to put Martha's name in. You don't have to be as extreme as Martha to not want barely clothed men grinding on you. Plus, as Martha said, Christine wasn't listening to her. If she had, she would have heard that Martha didn't want to go to Vegas and didn't want to go to a strip club. Christine's enthusiasm about the trip just blinded, and deafened, her to Martha's desires. I felt bad for Martha, but they seemed to make up by the end. Plus, Martha got an innuendo hat! I loved that at the Women's Conference there was a group of men, whose final line was, "And that's what it's like to be a woman in today's business world." Ken's a nice man. I thought he would actually do better convincing Dale that he had "won." It was Christine who did that, and did it with sincerity. I'm glad she was able to do some self-reflecting and realize how she had erred. I kind of liked Dale's line "Then you are sorely mistaken, much like my back." 3 Link to comment

Martha didn't want to be there, let alone be the center of attention onstage with a stripper. She had already told Christine earlier when asked if she liked massages, "I don't like to be touched by strangers." If that's the case for a massage, surely it would be the case for some stripper rubbing his junk all over her lap. I don't think Christine had any ill intentions towards Martha, it's just that her over-enthusiasm got the best of her -- much like it did when she was over-spending on Opera Night. 1 hour ago, Ms Lark said: I hated that she stuck up for Dale, though. peeayebee March 7, 2018 Share March 7, 2018 Maybe it's not fondness. Maybe it's that she agreed with him about expenses. 1 Link to comment

If I were Dale I would have been pissed off too. Christine blew through Dale's money without a second thought only to impress her "friends". As far as I remember, she never apologized for it and Dale is a twit, so the reaction to sue her and get his money back was probably pretty accurate twit like response. It sure looks like Dale is nearly impoverished and out of any financial options. Loved the episode. I think it was appropriate for Christine to get snapped up a little bit. I am glad that Martha stood up about her passive-aggressive bullying. Martha does seem comfortable in her own skin and knows what she does/does not like. Some people aren't touchy-feely types and shouldn't have to be. The show never fails to impress. Edited March 7, 2018 by ChipBach 3 Link to comment
possibilities March 7, 2018 Share March 7, 2018 I had started to say this in the Thanksgiving thread, but I think it belongs here more. I think Christine's self-esteem is very low, so she lets her family walk all over her, but also she's somewhat oblivious and I can see how that would annoy people over time. A lifetime of her steamrolling everyone and not allowing anything into her consciousness that displeases her fantasy would wear anyone out and become aversive eventually. I think she does that because it's too painful for her to face reality, but still-- it can wear you down to be with someone like that, and after a while you really do start to get angry about it. I was impressed that she did hear it when Martha called her out, though. So I think there's a lot of hope. I had forgotten about Martha's boyfriend the shepherd. Martha's arm must be a shriveled rotting mess by now. How long has it been in that cast? 6 Link to comment

Oh, god, I don't know, but broken bones take 6 weeks to heal no matter your age. I'm sure it's been much longer than that! Complete atrophy, which should be disgusting by now. Time for some serious PT on that wrist. I wish they'd remove it since it was never explained and never commented on. It's obviously a prop, that thing can slide right off and on. 1 Link to comment
atlantaloves March 8, 2018 Share March 8, 2018 Best episode this year, any time it is about Christine and Martha I am all IN, even if it is bad, it's is good. I want to meet the Shepherd! I bet he has a neck brace. 4 Link to comment

I want to meet the Shepherd! I bet he has a neck brace. Totally agree with ya!!! However I did think that Ken came to town to beat the crap out of Dale, especially walking up as he was stripping Christine's house. I was getting kind of depressed this season because all the episodes left me feeling sad/bad. It was a downer and I was about to remove it from my scheduled DVR recording, but wanted to give it one more try because I like the characters soooooo much! It was good to see Christine and Dale make up. I just hope something good can happen for Chip. He's always down in the dumps, especially since he burned his Renoir (or whatever the name was). I guess he has to continue wanting to be a clown b/c that's what the show was built on. I just don't know how they can take that premise much further. I want the Baskets to be happy. Is that asking too much?!!!! BTW, who is Martha's boyfriend that she mentioned - Chip? 1 Link to comment
atlantaloves March 9, 2018 Share March 9, 2018 Well look at it this way Evagirl, at least Christine is always happy, no matter what, so there is that! She is what makes the show for me. Louie is a genius. 3 Link to comment

Mrs. Stone explained to me that "my boyfriend is a shepherd" is code for Jesus. As for whether Christine was wrong to strong-arm Martha into the Vegas experience...yes, but it's complicated. (IMO.) Why I say that is, I've had the experience of being the one who resisted doing something because it wasn't in my comfort zone, and a friend cajoled and prodded me into doing it, and I ended up loving it. So sometimes a friend "not listening" is exactly the thing you want a friend to do. 2 Link to comment

possibilities March 14, 2018 Share March 14, 2018 I didn't think of the Jesus connection til I read it here. I took the scene in the field at face value. But seriously, how many shepherds are there in or just outside of Bakersfield, really? I think there may be something to this theory! 2 Link to comment
Milburn Stone March 15, 2018 Share March 15, 2018 My guess is Martha knew exactly what "code" she was using. This doesn't mean, however, that she was speaking genuinely! It could be that saying "I'm sorry, I have a personal relationship with Jesus" is her way of discouraging contact from some men or getting out of certain uncomfortable situations with them. Or it could be that she really does feel that way. (Despite her sleeping with Dale. Ew.) We don't know enough about her to know. 2 Link to comment
Guest March 15, 2018 Share March 15, 2018 Maybe I'm misremembering but in a past episode, wasn't she driving with Chip and asked him to pull over because they were near the area where her shepherd "boyfriend" worked? Then she got out of the car and walked down a hill? ETA: It was the second episode, "Finding Eddie." Martha was driving, not Chip. She wanted to go see the shepherd but said he probably wouldn't remember her. Chip said of course the shepherd would remember as she had a sweetness to her. I like the idea that "the shepherd" could be Jesus but it seems like he is an actual, living person. Link to comment
cpcathy March 16, 2018 Share March 16, 2018 The shepherd is real (as far as we know). She and Chip were indeed discussing him in the car. I remember because they filmed that scene along the roads in the city where I live, and my husband recognized exactly what streets they were on! 1 Link to comment
