Spartan Girl January 16, 2018 Share January 16, 2018 Please tell me I'm not the only one that remembers this show. Aladdin was my favorite Disney movie, and so I adored this series as a child. There was great stories, great character development, and some cool villains -- although a lot of them had lame name puns (Ayam Aghoul, Abis Mal, etc). Still, tt was so much fun. Also, I was too little to realize that Genie's voice was different, though now it's kind of obvious, LOL. 3 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-3968918

Spartan Girl January 17, 2018 Share January 17, 2018 I love the original movie as a kid, and you know what? I love the sequels too! They were one of the few sequels that didn't involve the Disney characters having children that get mad at their parents for so-and-so... I liked the King of Thieves better than Return of Jafar because they story was better. And of course Robin Williams came back. I'm so glad we got to have him play Genie one last time. God I miss him so much. *sniff* It will be interesting to see how Will Smith will compare in the live action movie. Man, I'm really nervous about that one, even though the cast looks great. Especially Mena Massoud (Aladdin). Me-yow! 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-3971367
Thrifty January 17, 2018 Share January 17, 2018 There's a live action movie coming out? Is that why this board was suddenly created? It seemed weird for a board to pop up for a 24 year old cartoon series. I also loved the show and the movies. Watched the show every day after school. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-3971769
Thrifty January 17, 2018 Share January 17, 2018 Ok I did just check IMDB. So there is a movie. I hope they don't try to make it darker and edgier or something, like they are always doing to childrens' stories lately. Thrifty January 17, 2018 Share January 17, 2018 I totally didn't get the punny nature of Ayam Aghoul's name until just now, 25 years later.... Aghoul was always my favorite villain for some reason. I guess the spooky supernatural nature of him. I love a good lich. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-3972021
Spartan Girl January 17, 2018 Share January 17, 2018 (edited) My favorite villain was a toss up between Mirage and Mozenwrath. I saw it three times in the theatre and would absolutely go see it tomorrow if I could. It’s my second favorite Disney movie after “The Fox and the Hound”. I still have the set of Aladdin Burger King toys and McDonald’s glasses, back when they did awesome movie tie-ins. When we would drive back to campus (my school was within driving distance from home) we would stop at the Burger King on the way every time because they would only release one toy at a time and I didn’t want to miss anything. I didn’t know they were doing a live action of this too (seriously, can they just stop) and I have to give it a hard pass. TheGreenKnight October 31, 2018 Share October 31, 2018 I wish they'd release this series on DVD or at least digitally. It's still the best TV series, imo, although the Tangled series has been better than I ever expected for that movie. I haven't seen the show in quite a while. I wonder why it isn't aired on one of the 4-6 channels Disney has, even if it's around 1am. Such a shame they have good shows like this one that they keep hidden away in a vault somewhere. 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-4796237

Spartan Girl Tuesday at 09:20 PM Share Tuesday at 09:20 PM So to cope with…things I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole and rewatched some episodes on YouTube/Dailymotion since stupid Disney+ STILL won’t unlock their vault and let it be on quality streaming. I don’t care that some things haven’t aged well, I still love this show. And I really do appreciate that the main villains like Mirage, Abis Mal, and Mozenrath** were allowed to be unabashedly nasty without any stupid redemption stories. Granted, there were villains that were sympathetic and/or turned good, but the writers pulled it off in ways that didn’t feel cheap or lazy. **Thank Christ almighty they didn’t go through with making him Aladdin’s brother, I would have HATED that. 2 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-8535209

This, this, and THIS! I mean, it would have been juicy as hell if Mozenrath had turned out to be Aladdin's brother... but then visions of Kylo Ren, Regina, Catra, and the like dance in my head, so maybe the good folks at Disney made the right call. Jonathan Brandis (RIP) was magnificent as Mozenrath: smug, prissy, but still intimidating, you can tell he was having the time of his life. God, I remember how truly creepy Mirage could be, and some of her schemes would have been at home in a show for a more mature audience! I mean, she lured children in a monster cult, FFS! Abis Mal was fun, but I have a soft spot for Haroud (RIP, James Avery). I love deadpan, exasperated sidekicks who are the true brains of the outfit. I confess Sadira was my least favorite part of the show. She did some messed up things, and it always felt like she was forgiven too easily. Sorry, but I don't like characters who try to steal someone from their significant other. It didn't help that she was voiced by Kellie Martin, who has always gotten on my last nerve. It's easy to roll our eyes at newly added love interests, but I actually loved Eden. She was just as funny and wacky as the Genie (female characters don't usually get to be this way), and they were pretty darned cute together. Bonus points for her meaningful name! 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-8535670

I hate that the show tried to make Aladdin look like the asshole for not immediately trusting her after turning a new leaf...I mean, she basically mind-raped him in that Dune Quixote episode. It would have worked so much better if she just learned her lesson from her first appearance that she couldn't steal Aladdin from Jasmine and just ended it at that. Then again, "Sandswitch" was a great episode that gave us StreetRat!Jasmine taking names and kicking ass... What I really loved about the series is how Aladdin and Jasmine's relationship panned out. They were engaged for a loooooooong time, but considering how petty and stupid the two of them could be at times, it was clear that they weren't ready yet, and that time period only their relationship stronger. Those two were my original OTP. We already knew they were soulmates, and this series just confirmed it with episodes like "Eye of the Beholder" and "Sandswitch." Spartan Girl Wednesday at 07:57 PM Share Wednesday at 07:57 PM (edited) If they wanted to give Jasmine a female friend, why couldn’t they pair her up with Eden for an episode instead of Sadira? They were both smart, awesome and violently protective girlfriends who would kick your ass if you so much as messed with their guys. Such a waste that Eden only got two episodes. I also got to give props to Eden for always finding loopholes in wishes to help little Dhondi and outsmart Abis Mal. And she wasn’t against freebies! 44 minutes ago, Wiendish Fitch said: Jasmine had lots of badass moments: being a street rat in the alternate universe*, becoming "The Scourge" after she lost her memory, defeating Mozenrath (albeit temporarily) when he pushed her too far, good times! And she kept the Scourge outfit and whip for a later episode when she and Aladdin went on that secret mission to beat Mozenrath. I love that Aladdin really went from the snide “It’s not like you beat me or anything” crack in the Scourge/Amnesia episode to “My girlfriend is awesome and will kick your ass” to Mozenrath in “Secret of Dagger Rock.” Aside from all those episodes, my personal favorite is “The Prophet Motive”. Quick refresher: Abis Mal kidnaps Carpet to steal the jeweled eye of Fashoom while Aladdin gets a prophecy that he’s supposedly going to die there. Maybe I’m just a sucker for the Disney Death trope, but the scene with Jasmine cradling Aladdin’s seemingly lifeless body and crying has always stayed with me. Linda Larkin really sold that voicework moment—even Iago was tearing up! 😭😭😭 Except now that moment was kind of ruined by the fact that Abis Mal fell from the almost exact same height earlier and it didn’t even knock him out. Maybe he just landed a different way. Possibly one of the most disturbing moments ever for a freaking Disney Afternoon show!!! Lately I’ve been remembering “Bad Mood Rising.” The gang is enlisted to entertain King Mahmood, the bratty child-ruler whose emotions literally control the weather of the land. Jasmine is the only one that he manages to warm up to by getting in touch with her maternal side and telling him stories. That turns out to be a mistake when the kingdom wants to make her stay there forever, and after an escape attempt, Jasmine is guilted into turning herself in by the subjects. Both she and Aladdin are heartbroken by this…but when Genie points out that Mahmood is just a kid and doesn’t get that he’s hurting people, he and Genie conjure all of their grieving “loved ones” to say goodbye to Jasmine — Iago pretending to be her mother was PRICELESS. Mahmood is moved into letting her go…and is surprised to realize doing good things makes him feel good. All his advisors were too busy coddling him to actually teach him right from wrong. Elated by the epiphany, he immediately wants to start helping his people and vows to be a better king. *sigh*In hindsight, that episode makes me depressed that a child immediately learns a lesson that certain adult leaders and politicians still don’t get (and probably never will). 1 Link to comment https://forums.primetimer.com/topic/65470-aladdin-1994-general-discussion/#findComment-8536752
