24 and I'm helping vote 9 out.  Both moments were IMO Emily reacting/lashing out from a place of hurt, not so much a "parenting" moment.

Let's just vote out one at a time now.

Worst Parenting Moments

2.  Straub and Francine act as though Christopher has no responsibilities toward a pregnant Lorelai.  "They are in this together." "I don’t see why. Why should Christopher sacrifice everything we’ve planned for him just because --" "Choose your words extremely carefully, Straub."

3.  Chris and Lorelai escape to the balcony for sex and leave Rory to face the aftermath of the horrid FND with the Haydens and Gilmores alone.  "That was a memorable evening."

10.  Emily yells at Lorelai when Rory accidentally stays out all night after her dance.  "She's doing the same thing you did." "No she's not." "She's going to get pregnant." "No she's not." "She's gonna ruin everything just like you did." "No she's not, no she's not, no she's not!"

17.  Chris promises Rory that he's committed to being there for the girls this time.  Moments later, he finds out Sherry is pregnant and leaves Sookie's wedding after only talking to Lorelai.  "You'll tell Rory?" "I will."

21.  After agreeing to help Lorelai get Rory back to Yale, Richard and Emily go behind her back and let Rory drop out and move in with them.  "Rory will be taking some time off from Yale. She will be moving into the pool house here with us. We will find her some sort of suitable job through one of our friends, and then after a suitable amount of time has passed, we will revisit the subject of her returning to school."

22.  Lorelai refuses to listen to Rory at all when she wants to take some time off from Yale and completely shuts her down.  "So what’s the great master plan, then, huh? You’re going to move back home, live in your room, work part-time at the bookstore? Forget it. Not an option."

3 and only because Rory was in a safe place at her grandparents’ house.

Chris and Lorelai jumped into rebellious teenager mode when they were together. That made it easier for Lorelai to slip up on the mothering job for an hour. Or less, given that it was Chris. (Heehee! Dirty!)

Not to mention alcohol. Was Lorelai ever not misbehaving when she was drunk? One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor.

I agree.  In fact, I never even considered that both of Rory's parents were essentially leaving her "alone" after all that until it was brought up here.  She was in a good enough relationship with her grandparents at that point that I just assumed she would be taken care of.  And she was.

Wow, and I was going 3 for a win (lose?).  They didn't know that either Emily or Richard would step up to help.  Heck, her parents often said how Lorelai had ruined her life with the pregnancy.  For all they know Rory was sitting sobbing in the car.  But Christopher and Lorelai completely ignored the trauma their kid was experiencing to head for the balcony for a quickie.  Appalling, in my opinion.

So, honestly, I got nothin'.  Carry on!

I had this to win too, or at least top 2-3 for the same reasons...I actually love the Emily/Rory moment that happens as a result, but Emily shouldn't have been the only one thinking about Rory here.

I gotta go with 10. I can't with 17 or 21. I agree that Richard meant well when it came to Rory, and I also kind of love the scene where Rory runs into Richard's arms and he immediately goes into soothing/protector mode. For me, though, this is just such a monumental betrayal of Lorelai, especially considering that she came to them for help with this in the first place, and what that said about where her relationship was with them at the time. She made herself vulnerable and placed her trust in them, which is not something she has an easy time with. 17..well I think that speaks for itself.

I also expected 3 to be the “winner.” She wasn’t in physical danger but emotionally, she was very vulnerable. Lorelai knew that Rory was nervous about seeing them and then it went so poorly? And alcohol is no excuse for poor parenting.

#2 should go because the worst things Christopher or Lorelai did are de facto worse than the worst thing Straub did because they are key players in the GG universe.

Also influenced by the sheer depth of the things that the elder Gilmores did over time.

21 for the win because Emily and Richard had the most refined structure of controlling the girls’ lives. They worked often in sync and were committed to having these adult, intelligent women become what the elder Gilmores had tried to thrust on them for decades.

Christopher is a ghost in comparison. 17 definitely deserves second place, though, because, well Christopher.

17 to win. He couldn't even tell his own daughter. Scumbag.

I still don't super hate 21. I think Richard, especially, meant well. His granddaughter, who he adores, came sobbing to him for help. I was also really annoyed at Lorelai during that entire situation for being so reactive toward Rory saying she wanted to drop out. I think if she'd been more understand and supportive, Rory may have gone back a lot sooner.

OMG ya'll left me with a tie, for real?  >.<  And I don't even super hate either one of these moments, either.  17 because I agree with deaja that Rory would rather have heard it from Lorelai and had time to process it away from Chris anyway, and 21 because I feel Lorelai was just as wrong for the way she handled that whole situation as E/R were for going back on what they said they would do (and Richard didn't even say he would go along with anything in the first place, as I recently discovered when I was reading over the script again).

Ugh.

But if I have to --

Worst Parenting Moment is

Chris promises Rory that he's committed to being there for the girls this time.  Moments later, he finds out Sherry is pregnant and leaves Sookie's wedding after only talking to Lorelai.  "You'll tell Rory?" "I will."
