S03.E03: The Way Back

Drew returns from deployment in Afghanistan and can't seem to shake off the stress of being back from overseas. Things get crazy right away as he, Jordan and Kenny treat a bride (Lindsey Morgan, "The 100") and her wedding party who have been injured during the festivities, as well as her father, whose presence is not making things easier. Meanwhile, TC helps Topher entertain his demanding mother, whose extended visit is putting stress on the family.

I thought this was a really good episode.

I really felt for Drew - it has to be so hard to be rejected by your parents just because of who you love - the people in your life who brought you in to the world and are supposed to be there for you. I love his character.

I enjoyed the bride/father plot - live for today; let your loved ones know what they mean to you; no one's promised tomorrow. I liked seeing Lindsey Morgan and Emilio Rivera.

Loved seeing Topher and his mom get to the heart of their issues and begin to heal old wounds. I wonder how he'll handle her staying permanently?

I would have enjoyed the Bride/Father plot more if Chicago Med hadn't JUST done the "weird illness with genetic component threatens daughter's life and turned dad into an addict" plot, like, a month ago.

Lance Henriksen is a pro.

Mama Zia can stay -- I like the actress a lot, and I think Leung plays off her well.

Is it okay if I think I might sort of almost like Tragic Consequences and Jordan, as long as they remain friends, and don't revert to angsty, doom-laden lovers?

The show needs to stop telling me that Paul is the awesomest genius doctor ever. There was a little more showing in this episode, but, good grief! Please stop propping him with Dr. Bailey Salin -- I mean, er, Scott.

[sigh...] As an avid casinophile and resident of central TX, I had to shake my head at the casino storyline.  The only casino within reasonable driving distance from San Antonio is 2.5 - 3 hours away in good traffic.  (Yes, we measure distance in hours in TX.)  Towns are pretty sparse out in that part of the state, but ya gotta think there was some hospital closer than San Antonio.  And Topher's mom looked pretty well put together when she got back to San Antonio considering she'd spent a minimum of 5 hours riding in a car.

Yes.  Or if it's wrong, we can be wrong together.  Turns out I actually do like them individually, even though I still think Jill Flint isn't much of an actress.  They also seem to have turned down TC's manpain, which is definitely to the show's benefit.  However, I think Lance Henrikson's talking about how he never had a family because he was too busy skirt-chasing probably doesn't augur well.

Tales of the City taught us that everyone has both a biological family and a logical family.  Lucky for Drew, his logical family thinks he's pretty terrific.  For all of the show's many faults, they have always dealt with Drew really well.  And yeah, my heart broke a little.

I kind of thought Topher's mom kind of leaned into the stereotype too far.  The scene where she talked about having to give up her own dreams to put food on the table mitigated it, but then they went for broke.  I did really like the actress, so perhaps we'll her again.

Brugada Syndrome actually does cause nightmares.  Huh.

While I like the story lines and characters (except for snot-nosed intern) something is just missing from this show now.  I think it's Ragosa.

I'll still watch but it just doesn't grab me like it used to.

Funny I noticed Krista was gone but not him.

Took me a second to place Lindsay Morgan as the bride, but it was pretty awesome seeing here here.  Emilio Rivera was also pretty cool, even though I knew it was destined to end with him dying after she refused to see him for one last time, her regretting it, and Drew realizing this means he should tell his father the truth and not have that regret, even if it ends up not working out for him.  Too bad that it sounds like his dad is basically the same dad Will has over on Nashville.  I did surprisingly enjoy the scenes between him and Jordan.

Topher and his mom were both hilarious and heartbreaking at the same time.  Admittedly, they have treading common ground, but the actress is likable enough, and Ken Leung is more then delivering it.  His mom staying was so obvious, but I still cracked up.

I do hope they eventually move past this "Paul needs to prove himself" phase.  Especially since it's making Scott just be his propping up, "You can do it!" guy, and you shouldn't waste Scott Wolf with that stuff!

T.C. and Jordan didn't bug.  I'm sure they'll end up back together some day, but I actually don't mind them when they are civl with one another.

Lance Henriksen was pretty cool, but he is looking pretty frail.

I did laugh at Jordan's "The family is back together!" bit at the end, because I was picturing somewhere, Ragosa and Krista being all "Gee, thanks, Jordan!"

I just don't have any idea why TC and Jordan broke up?  She lost the baby....and then...?  Don't get it, especially when they both seem okey dokey with it.

I can't believe they nixed Rigosa and brought in the intern.  She is so beyond grating for me and I don't think she's a good actress., like, at ALL.  She also makes me miss Krista.

I'm also not feelin' the ambulance dude - I think it's his voice.  It's very odd to me.

I find myself wondering if the interactions between Jordan and Drew were a last minute rewrite of something that was supposed to be between Krista and Drew.  To the point that they had the script, realized that Jeananne Goossen wasn't returning, not just that without her there, they needed a replacement.

Jordan was a surprisingly acceptable substitute (also, I may be a pod person, but I even think TC might have been one too), but Drew needed his little sister.  Maybe I'll just imagine him calling her before he pulled himself together for Rick.

No, you should not.

And then Ragosa would be all, "See? What did I tell you -- manpain!" Krista just rolls her eyes and mutters "Whatever, Onion."
