Thanks Cupid, for keeping us up on the latest news.

Glad to pass on the news. My keyboard died this morning, and I wasn't able to complete the list of the stories I had compiled for today.

@ Petunia, jpagan or anyone financially pressed because of cut hours or business closings, the U.S. Census is looking for census workers all over the country. It will be temporary employment, but might cover as a stopgap during the coronavirus crisis. Several friends hit by recent work closings have applied in L.A.

Numbers of infected have increased here.  Today the Province has closed all schools.  The City has closed all facilities (including my pool 😢) which I suspected would happen.

Interestingly, in spite of all of the safeguards we had in place, the curve is the same (with smaller numbers) as everywhere else.

And we now know that we have community spread (7 people from one event all infected).

Well, my tiny plan to shop only on my nearby street... Not looking so good after all.

Restaurants, bars, libraries, and pretty much everything retail that's classed as "non-essential" is now being ordered closed here. And the stores on the street have window signs posted about either closing or restricting purchase of items, stopping use of cash for purchases, and lack of supplies. Apparently my local pet store, essential to me and the cats, will be classified as non-essential, and their suppliers are starting to short out as well.

All this as federal and provincial governments reassure us of our robust [their word] supply chains for essential retail.

And yes, Trudeau is on about closing airports except for freight and diplomats...

I never thought I'd experience anything like this, and I feel for all of us.

I got a message just now that’s Jen the restaurants ban ends my restaurant won’t reopen. 😭

I'm so sorry. Restaurants have razor thin profit margins, They're closing for good all over Seattle too. My DH just called and his store is going on to online sales only. The repair dept. will still be working because for once they can get some uninterrupted work done and maybe get caught up. The future is uncertain.

Sorry for the typos above I was in shock. That restaurant wasn’t even doing that bad but couldn’t afford the closure even if for a couple weeks. It really sucks because the manager was cool as hell, calm and kind and very committed to customers satisfaction, and I really liked the other servers and customers! It also had the potential for making a lot of money. Saturday I only had 2 tables and made $20 tip on one and $177 tip on the other.

I had an interesting experience with Canada Post today. Was due to receive a parcel which required signature (prescription meds for my kidney cat).
They just put the parcel through my mail slot. Tracking info - Parcel Delivered. Recipient refused to sign. LOL - they didn't even try. But happy to have the cat meds. Also I am thinking they have delivered them enough times they know sig is maybe not necessary?

To be honest I was dreading opening the door and touching the filthy pen to sign 😉

What a great guy. I have been repeatedly amazed by the way people have been pulling together. Neighbors helping their elderly neighbors, stores having special "senior hours" so older folks can go shopping in nearly empty stores, even my son, offering to take two buses (four, actually there and back) just to leave supplies and meds at his immune compromised fiancee's door.  You just never know how much kindness there is in the world until something like this happens.

So true.

Yesterday, we had put Hazel (the dog) in the car to take her for a ride, as we pretty much do every day since she's too lame to go for walks anymore and she LOVES car rides.  Our neighbor across the street, who had already told us that she and her husband would be doing any grocery shopping we needed from here on out, came running out of her house wanting to know just "where do you think you're going?"  We explained that it was just our usual "take the dog for a ride" and she said, "Good.  I don't want you going to the store, I told you I'd do it for you".

It felt so good to know that someone is paying that much attention, it really did.

He's very nice and this isn't the first time he's done something like this and I really appreciate it. I am still a tad peeved his wife only wanted to pay me half and said she hoped I found that fair. Like no. I have expenses. And half is only like two hundred and something dollars for two weeks.

Hopefully I can finish that dental course and find something that pays way better.

Hi all - hope you managed to have a decent day today with our "new normal".

Mr. Lovemesome's car is going to be out of warranty at the end of April, so we took it in to the dealer to make sure everything that can be done under warranty is done.....the appointment was made two weeks ago and since we don't know if we'll be in some sort of forced shelter in place situation at the end of April, he kept the appointment.  Instead of a loaner car, which they always give us, I drove my car so that I could get him home.  We broke our rule of keeping Mr. Lovemesome in the house (he's 62 with diabetes).  Originally, I was going to take his car in and get the loaner car to come home in and I stressed last night about how I was going to manage the loaner, when I don't know who has been in that car, who has been hacking and wheezing in it!  This seemed an easy fix, for both of us to go.  The dealership is typically JAM PACKED but today, there were just three of us at 8:00 a.m. It will be ready tomorrow at noon.

I made the decision to try and not watch any news today, until the 6:30 evening news.  It gives me all I need, just the facts, just the news I need to know.  It's not that I am sticking my head in the sand, it's that the news feels so dire and then when they start showing press conferences, I feel such anger and I am tired of feeling that way.

I'm focusing on what I have.  I'm focusing on how I may be able to serve others in a difficult time.  I reached out to a few of my neighbors to see how they were and offered to do a grocery run if they needed it (taking a cue from @boes kind and caring neighbors).  In ten years, when I'm 67 and if this ever happens again, I want to be the kind of person I hope someone else will be for me!  It felt great to be out in the unusually warm air, listening to birds, enjoying the daffodils, which are blooming super early and - I can't deny it, it felt great  seeing someone's face light up, to help lighten someone's load.

I saw this on Facebook tonight - my hope for us all!  It's going to be a very long couple of weeks here......

My DH is at Costco calling me every five seconds, asking if he should get this or that. Of course they're out of both tp and Kleenex. Just a minute ago I was talking to him and all of a sudden he goes "Charmin! Hey, buddy where did you get that?" Turns out they had some in the mythical back but when my hubs asked an employee they went and looked and said it was all gone.

I ordered tp from Amazon but it won't come till the end of April. I think my husband will be laid off any day now. My anxiety disorder is in full force. Not being born and raised here, I have always had this low-level "what if" fear. We are tiny and in literally in the middle of the ocean. We've had some scares over the years with tsunamis and hurricanes during which there is a lot of panic-buying. We had to evacuate our old apartment three different times, wrangling cats and taking what valuables would fit in the car. The vacationers who were renting in our complex would sometimes be weeping as they left their condos, not knowing what to expect. But when it's over, it's like it never happened. It's all put dents into my psyche. I feel completely vulnerable. We are so ill equipped to deal with anything here. Our government sucks because of nepotism and the same shitty people getting elected over and over again. It's embarrassing. Yesterday my husband checked the website for unemployment and it was down, which is so fucking typical. We live in a beautiful place but we will go down fast and hard when things get worse. My husband is definitely the Yin to my Yang and sometimes I feel bad that he has to deal with me.

jpagan05, I feel so bad for what you're going through.  I'm not going to minimize your fears because, going by what I see and what I read, they're all justified.

All I can say is to ride this fear out as best you can and know that you've got your husband by your side and I bet like anything you have friends in the Islands who are like what family is supposed to be for you.  This is tough, and in a way, worse because it's also unknown.  We don't have a road map to the future through all of this, not yet.

But we will.

Bea and my in-laws are alarmed too. Their latest plan is to return to the mainland end of March, but are becoming more reticent about leaving Oahu. The locals are healthy and following safety protocols for coronavirus. The in-laws are redirecting food not sold commercial from the truck farm to the local food shelves, and checking on neighbors. Bea's been fixing screens, painted the kitchen and shutters, when she's not working on her surfing.

Thing2 and I stopped by a corner vendor and picked up 10 sacks of oranges, then delivered breakfast/lunch to students in our school district this morning. The grade schoolers were so happy to have a fresh orange.

Corporate canceled our Intern Program today; 900+ letters went out to apologize and ask them to apply again next year. Meetings on Skype get completed very quickly or very slowly; there's no in-between.

Thing1 helped me plant vegetable and herb seedings, and clean the patio furniture.

@jpagan05 yeah it fucking sucks so many people are out of work, wondering how they’ll make their mortgage or rent, pay for meds, and of course the fear they or someone they care about will get ill.  I think there gonna be a huge economy hit and social and psychological hit.

They say a lot of abused partners and children are going to be adversely affected as well.

I know I’m worried about money. My mom if I’m honest hasn’t been well a long time and she’s in a manic phase right now and lashing out at me. I have my nursing home job but she’s been trying to get me fired from it by driving up to it and starting fights w me outside or screaming. I told her today during my lunch this is our only income, but it fell on deaf ears. I also don’t want to get ANYONE sick or exposed or myself sick since I have heart defects.

Ive never seen anything like this in my life.

Petunia, you're in a terrible bind.

The only thing you can control is your response to the situation. Do your best at the job, and try to maintain your composure. Your being stressed won't help your health or effectiveness at work.

If your mother has a regular physician, contact their office notifying them she is in a manic phase. Perhaps they can step in to help her and you.

I’m really grateful all of us have not caught the virus and thanking the Lord daily for that. One of the people I knew who was in quarantine was released yesterday as negative and was in pretty high spirits chatting up a storm w me.

George and I went to the local mall today and it was an absolute ghost town. Only a handful of stores remain open and it’s only w v limited hours. The luxury stores are closed and cleared out all of their goods like Tiffany’s, Burberry, LV (smart). George and I are social distancing. I must admit he enjoyed trotting around the mall and looking at windows (it was always a dog friendly mall) and he felt “normal”

so weird even the drive thru restaurants in our area like McD were closed even for that, I’m vegan and don’t eat there (only their apple pie and drinks are vegan) but did want an orange juice. For some reason I find their OJ very good. So many clothing stores are now closed and only online. I need new shoes soon and will have to order them now. I am still a person who needs to try shoes or clothes ON to know if they fit okay or don’t look stupid or tacky in RL.

I think retail brick and mortar. Which was already doing very shitty and the online based social culture will only escalate from this when it all passes. Of course this will eliminate a lot of the middle class and make virtual identities, friendships or activities even more the norm.

@Cupid Stunt posted a link about shortages. I’ve read a lot of articles about it the past 36 hrs as well. I just see so many stores here out of canned and perishable goods and the articles cite the fact there won’t be workers for agriculture or menial jobs and high demand vs supply. I totally believe that.

I am so grateful for all of you. It makes me feel better to come here and check in with you preverts. Thank you for the kind words.

@Petunia13 That is awful about your mom. I'm so sorry. That is the absolute last thing you need right now. I hope she can get the help she needs.

An artist I follow on instagram posted this and it made me laugh. Hope you are all hanging in there and safe and sound.

I actually think she did a good job.
