I used to go to Europe a lot from the east coast. It was so close. I was young, made good money as a banquet server and always had seasonal chunks of time off. I've missed it so much. Now my Auntie in Iceland is in her 90s and slowing way down and I really want to see her so I couldn't put it off any longer. Hubs got some comp rooms in Paris and we've got some good friends in London who will put us up so other than the flights, it's ideal.

Red eye Maui to LAX- then 3.5 hour layover

LAX to JFK- another 3.5 hour layover

Red eye JFK to Keflavik, arriving at 7am.

Been speaking to my cousin who lives in Reykjavik, who told me there's a bus from the airport to the edge of town (then a 10 minute walk to their place). A BUS!! Good lord, I don't think I can take it. I've just discovered there is no Uber or Lyft in Iceland, taxi is about $140 and a private car service is $350 round trip. We may just rent a car or bite the bullet for a door to door car service, especially since we fly out at 7 in the morning. I am going to be in debt forever.

And the kitties, they are so spoiled, I hate leaving them. And I worry and miss them terribly any time I travel. I haven't figured out the sitter situation yet. More than likely my landlords will come in and feed them. We are friends and I have taken care of their sweet old lab and kitty when they've traveled.

I'm debating Xanax. I like to drink before a flight and it's probably not a great idea to mix the two. Maybe Benadryl? I might actually get my blue card and go to the pakalolo store. Ugh, it's just going to suck. I've got to stop worrying about it. I didn't sleep again last night.

I will bombard you with pictures!💓💓

I'm not sure how you feel about herbal remedies (being extremely wary of Big Pharma, I'm all about them), but ashwagandha has really helped me with anxiety, and it's also helped me sleep pretty deeply.  And there shouldn't be any issues with having a drink.  Of course, disclaimer...if you take any prescription meds, please check with your doctor for possible interactions!

Thanks for sending me back to my misspent youth, Cupid!  My college bf loved The Stone Roses, and I still have the cassette tape he gave me of The Complete Stone Roses.  Now if only I could find my Walkman!

I use OLLY Sleep Melatonin Gummies or Valium, and try to get as much exercise and sleep as possible during the flight. With jpagan's flight schedule, there are opportunities for both. I use a noise cancelling program (set for 40 minutes) on my phone, with an eye mask, and I'm out like a light.

EDpY7MdWsAMDQmi.jpg

Other travel products that are helpful: AMMAX Silicone Cream Jars, ANREONER Silicone Travel Bottles (leak-proof), ShowerPill Body Wipes, LifeStraw Personal Water Filter, Physix Gear Sport compression socks, , PURELL Hand Sanitizing Wipes (planes are filthy, clean your seat, seat belt, buttons and table, top and underside -- In a pinch, cheap mini-bottles of vodka work to sterilize surfaces), portable power pack, polar fleece shawl as a neck pillow or blanket (Travel Smith), packing cubes, Ziplock bags, Sleepy Ride Airplane Footrest (Mr.Stunt won't get on a plane without it), empty BPA-free water bottle (to be filled with water at a bar or restaurant after going through Homeland Security Theater).

I might have a cocktail a few hours before going to the airport, but I don't drink alcohol on the plane -- bottled water or canned beverages only. Considering how dirty US planes are (you'll see the grunge on your cleaning wipes), the FAA only requires airlines to clean their water tanks 4X a year (that's where your ice, coffee, hot water and decanted water come from), and I can't speak to the regulations or efficacy of foreign airlines beverage cleaning processes. It's better to be cautious with what you eat and drink on a plane.

Follow the FAA carry-on regulations and you'll be fine.

Since some have asked, I got Steve's labs in today. From what I understood on the phone, they are still growing the cultures and will know more in a couple of weeks, but Steve has tested positive for three different bacteria in his nose. One, the vet is not concerned about, one is caused by fecal matter contamination and can cause heart disease in birds, and one I'm not too certain of, and seems to affect lovebirds more, but the vet still wants to treat it.

The antibiotic will be taken for 3 full weeks rather than 10 days, and I have to increase the nasal flushing from one day to twice a day.

Once the antibiotic is stopped the plan is to wait three weeks and then schedule another vet visit and if my budget allows, to re-do the cultures.

In the mean time, as I mentioned, another report on the cultures being tested will come back.

My only real concern right now if that Steve had a little face feather stuck in his nose and it crusted and I didn't realize and had yanked it out. I'm worried there might be a little piece still stuck up there. I don't know if I should being him back for another nasal flush (they can do it better) but it's so costly. Or if it can sit up there until the treatment is done and he goes in for his re-evaluation after the meds are finished.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me and your concern for my expensive little lemon of a bird.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone.

Where America's Climate Migrants Will Go As Sea Level Rises -- Climate migrations are already happening across the world, although not always talked about in those words and often having more to do with droughts and famine. With sea level rise and worsening weather, those migrations are bound to multiply and accelerate, including intra country, especially in a large country with a lot of coasts.

Bistra Dilkina, a computer scientist at the University of Southern California, led a study to try and predict how sea level rise might drive U.S. migration patterns in the future. They based their estimates on the movements of displaced residents following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, used analysis from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on the effects of sea level rise, and then “trained a machine-learning model to predict where coastal populations will move when forced to leave their homes—and how that, in turn, affects the migration of non-coastal residents.”

Dilkina is careful to describe the study as only an “approximation” of how sea level change might drive migration patterns, not a precise picture of where people will actually move. “There’s still a lot of need for understanding different drivers and externalities.” Other factors will have an impact, which means a lot more work and more data will have to go into these models so they can be used to plan appropriate measures in the coming years.

I read that article! Both of those people suck. So does the flight attendant for rolling her eyes and rewarding bad behavior with free booze. Punching someone's seat is unacceptable but her saying she was filing a claim with the FBI was ridiculous. We need a little more Golden Rule in this world. The person behind me who's traveling for business from LAX to NYC will have no idea, nor care that I'm on my second of three legs with no sleep and another red-eye ahead. Delta wanted an extra $150 per seat for that leg for 3 more inches of legroom. You can't win. For the record, I am pro-recline (unless it's a child). I'm 5'9" and will probably recline my seat. Maybe I'll bake some banana bread payola.

@Snaporaz I just emailed my acupuncturist about ashwagandha and he sells it in his office and thinks it would be good for me. Since I pay out of pocket for it and he makes me an herbal formula for various complaints, I wanted to make sure it didn't negate anything. Thank you so much for putting that on my radar. I hope it works❤️

So once again, unfortunately, I lost one of my fur babies yesterday. I inherited Sophie from my brother who wasn’t allowed to take her within into his group home  situation. At that time, she was 14. She was born with mangled front paws and very short legs but was a force. Sophie knew what she wanted and when. Her coat as lovely and thick and she had these huge yellow, marbled eyes. Every day at Y&R time , she would come to get into my lap where she slept. We called her the “little tank “ because of the way she would walk so determinedly across the room. However at the age of 19+, she developed kidney issues which eventually wore her down. She didn’t eat for the last two days and I could tell yesterday was the day so I took her onto my lap for cuddles. I knew Sophie would rather pass at home rather than on a table at the vets’. I have had to do that too under different circumstances so it’s entirely unique each time.

Anyway,I have a major sad and will miss my old girl deeply. Sigh 😔

Last weekend, it was an elderly aunt who was my mother’s remaining sister. She has been living in California for decades but will be returned to Canada for burial. I guess that’s why it doesn’t feel real yet.

You won't get past the gate with your banana bread. Homeland Security Theater is fairly implacable when it comes to carry-on items.

Bribery won't work in Coach. Coach is an automatic ticket to Hell, and that's why I recommend exercising and rest between legs of flights; your body and mind will more easily adjust to confinement.

Luke O'Neil, writing for The Guardian, points to capitalism as the enemy in this situation. Airlines that continue to chip away at the space and comfort in their planes create the atmosphere for abusive behavior. Seats are getting smaller, amenities more scarce, nerves and anxieties dialed to 11, flights overbooked and late -- All of this so that airlines can make more money off of travelers stacked into their planes like cord wood (they wish).

As I mention earlier, It's easier to be polite and try to be accommodating with your neighbors, but too often the Golden Rule is tossed out at the gate with your banana bread. The situation shouldn’t have happened, and if the world were more just and not built on profit, maybe it wouldn’t have.

Not to defend two jerks fighting over 3-5 inches of seating space (this is coming from being stuck in the aisle seat with the back of a reclined passenger seat 8 inches from my nose on a red eye NYC to LA flight -- the Evil Chancellor Of All The Assholes in the reclined seat), what hasn't been addressed is the gender dynamic of the encounter. The man felt he was fully entitled to harass the woman when she used her seat as intended, because his space was encroached upon. If it had been two men, I doubt the fight would have escalated to an online debate on who's the biggest asshole who can't/won't negotiate or the airlines treating Coach as a cattle car.

Will novel (2019-nCoV) virus go pandemic or be contained? -- There’s a lot being written about 2019-nCoV, the new coronavirus, maybe too much hype, in my opinion. There’s a lot that can be said about China’s political reaction to the virus, although even at the beginning, and there’s a lot we don’t know. I read a short and well-written article last night in Science magazine. It got me thinking about what I’m looking for in news about the virus. The mathematics of disease transmission are similar to the mathematics of chemical kinetics, which was part of my studies in engineering school. That’s where my questions originate.

There is no evidence that the virus was generated as part of a biological warfare program. Its DNA has been sequenced, and there would be clues there if that were the case. It most likely originated in bats, as has been true for other coronaviruses, and was transmitted through another animal in a live-animal market. We know very little of the parameters that are necessary to predict how widely the virus will spread or how dangerous it will be. Epidemiologists are collecting data, but the parameters depend on statistics that we need more of or time-consuming laboratory work that may be hard to carry out while treating sick people is the first priority.

How many cases are there? Some cases have been carefully diagnosed with appropriate laboratory tests. The reported number shot up during the past week when China loosened the criteria for reporting. Some people may be infected without symptoms or may have minimal sniffles and may not be counted. This website from Johns Hopkins gives confirmed cases, deaths, and recoveries.

How contagious is the virus? This is represented by R0, the measure of how many people one person with the virus infects. We don’t know whether the virus is contagious before people show symptoms. We don’t know how long the incubation period is. R0 is derived from observations, so it is likely to change as more information comes in. I have seen a wide range of estimates for R0.

What happens to the virus as the seasons change? Some common cold viruses, including coronaviruses, become less infective as the weather warms in spring. But not all coronaviruses, and we just don’t know about this one.

Every day, there is more information available. Each case can provide a bit of data – I particularly hope that good records are being kept on that cruise ship from Japan.

I am so sorry for your losses @PatsyandEddie ❤️

I just learned something and wanted to share with you all, especially @jewel21 and all bird lovers.  Avocados are toxic for birds and can lead to all sorts of problems and even death.  The toxin can be found in the fruit, skin, seed, bark, and leaves and can change depending on the variety of avocado and the species of bird.  Symptoms can be subtle and death can occur 24-48 hours after ingestion.  Sorry if you already knew...it surprised me, so I thought I'd put it out there just in case.  (Yeah, avocado seems like a strange thing to feed birds and it wouldn't even occur to me, but you never know!)

Yes, avocados are very toxic to birds. In addition, so are scented candles, perfumes, air fresheners, fumes from non-stick pans (never keep your bird in a kitchen,) fumes from self-cleaning ovens, and cat saliva. Birds are seriously delicate creatures.

Thanks for sharing the info @Snaporaz!

I had a male cockatiel Peepers growing up and he was always keep in his own space away from that stuff like a foyer or den and occasionally his one nostril would get aggravated. Birds are so smart it’s crazy. When my mom had parrots they’d talk to George and even make comments about his hair, when he was small and would run or bounce past on the floor, thought his fluff was feathers Im guessing they’d call him “hi Baby Bird!” they talked a lot actually and would react to what was going on or comment on their treats (one time I sat them and they told me “that’s enough” or something when I was putting food and water in LOL) or people visiting. On Instagram yesterday I saw someone playing cards with a bird Go Fish and it was plucking the cards w it’s beak and winning.

I spent all day with George on errands and hanging out it was so nice. Best helper and friend EVER!

Oh mes amis, je suis une peu triste.

Last Wednesday after work, I went to sign up for that dental secretary course. They're holding smaller classes, 2-3 students per teacher and instead of six weeks, it's only four weeks. The school seems a bit sketchy (it's not recognized by the ministry of education, but it is recognized by the government in the sense I can get money back on my income taxes next year and it's recognized by dental clinics across Quebec.) That being said, it's been around a long time and they teach you about billing and insurance, which I need, and it's taught by actual dentists. It looks like i'll be starting on Saturday, March 7th. The woman I spoke with is also the recruitment agent and said she has a lot of demands now for dental practices looking for secretaries and showed me some of the inquiries. She said because I have experience working in the health care field, she thinks she can place me pretty quickly. That means in about a month and a half I might have a new job. And I'm not sure if I'll have a lot of notice to give the physio place. I should be happy but I'm a bit sad. With the exception of my manager, I like the place and I'm going to miss the clients like crazy. And of course there's the added fear of quitting the physio place only to have the dental job not work out and then having no job. Gah. I really hate change.

Try not to worry about a month and a half from now.  Take it day by day. And don't feel bad about leaving the physio place.  It isn't full-time, right?  And you need FT.  If one dental job doesn't work out, you'll eventually find one that will.  And you'll probably be as fond of the clients in a new office as you are of the clients in the physio place, because you're a warm and friendly person.

I understand your misgivings.  I'm a worryer, too, and I like stability and familiarity, and sometimes I freak myself out over change.  But I've learned it does no good to worry about things that may not come to pass.  So take it as it comes, and try to view the change as a positive one.  Learning new skills is never bad, and even if you find you don't like where you end up, it may lead you to the place you're supposed to be.  I guess what I'm trying to say is...Perk up, little teapot!

Thanks @peacheslatour and @Snaporaz, you've made me feel better.

The physio place is only 21 hrs a week now, it was 25 hrs, and with grandpa getting on in years, I do need to find something full-time and the sooner the better. And yes, new skills are never a bad thing. It's been 20 years since I graduated college and adding a new course to my resume can only make it better.  Thanks again for perking me up 😉

Dear jewel, I can only reiterate what Peaches and Snap have said; these classes are for your benefit. They will broaden and strengthen your skills and make you more marketable. Taking this step also draws you out of your comfort zone. approaching your concerns through study and working with new people. You can still remain in contact with the patients at the physio office.

This is a new opportunity to look forward to and work toward, not the end of everything. Take heart.
