jewel21 June 10, 2020 Share June 10, 2020 It's only been two days but I'm already exhausted and praying for Friday. The new job is super stressful and busy. They're short a secretary and sometimes stuff is so crazy they don't have time to explain it to me. Or they start to explain/show me something but shit happens and then they forget. I answer the phones but I don't really know how to schedule yet, or they're asking for stuff I can't do, so I just keep putting the calls on hold so the other secretary or manager can deal with it. I get home at like 7:30 PM most days. Monday I was home at 8:30 PM. I barely have time to do anything, like feed the bird, the mouse, eat, do dishes, try to watch an hour of TV. The manager expects me to study and memorize the codes for different dental procedures but so far I haven't had time. And the thing that bothers me most is that while the dentists, hygienists, and assistants are well protected with the patients, we're not wearing any protective gear around each other. The secretary and I are sitting side by side with no masks or gloves on. The lunch room is filled with like 6 employees practically in each other's laps breathing the same air for an hour straight. There's a lot of communal sharing of food and stuff. My throat is already feeling funny and I'm not sure if it's the air conditioning or something else. The secretary I worked with on Monday called the manager today and said she was sick and had a runny nose. The manager asked if she had a fever or chills and the secretary said no. So the manager is like oh it's just a cold. Which like thanks, because that probably means I will get it since we were glued together for 9 hours straight. Gah. It just doesn't seem safe, And when I've brought stuff like this up, the manager is like, well you can wear a mask if you want, but you won't be able to speak with the clients on the phone because they won't be able to understand you. We're supposed to have a meeting either Friday or next Monday to see how I like the job, if I'm happy, and if I want to continue. As well they will see on their end if I'm learning and seem like I can pick things up and succeed in the position. At this point, I'm not sure what I want to do... 1 3 Link to comment
Snaporaz June 10, 2020 Share June 10, 2020 That sucks, jewel. Could some of the stress just be normal "new person" stress that will lessen once you're more familiar with things? My guess is that you will know what you want to do by the time that meeting happens. If you are still unhappy and don't feel safe, let them know. If they are willing to address your issues with good solutions, then stay. Otherwise, thank them for the opportunity and be on your way. (But will that screw up your unemployment benefits? I'm not sure how that works in Canada.) Maybe your other jobs will open up soon, which would help you make your decision. 3 5 Link to comment

Keep track of questions you have and incomplete instructions you are not clear on; you can discuss these at your meeting. Don't discuss who dropped what ball while training you, simply make a point of getting the correct information to do your job. Make complete notes and repeat it back to confirm what they are telling you. If you don't feel it's a safe work environment, your instincts might be correct. I'm surprised you aren't required to wear a mask in the office, if only to protect you from the patients and visa versa; that seems to contravene National Health coronavirus protocols (look it up or contact your provincial health department for your type of medical office). My receptionists and personnel answer phones with a mask, and have no problems enunciating clearly. What your new bosses may want is to see your face to gauge your reaction to the new situation. Either way, protect yourself. Definitely wear a mask, and gloves, if you so choose. Try to maintain a safe distance from employees and patients. Keep your area clean with window/surface cleaner. Wash your hands regularly. A new work situation can be very stressful and confusing. Try not to be so hard on yourself. 12 Link to comment

I was finally able to wear a mask but she again said if I couldn't speak clearly on the phone I'd have to remove it. Patients seemed to understand me just fine so I don't know what she keeps going on about. Throat is still bothering me and she admitted hers was too but said it was just fatigue. Um, not necessarily. She keeps mentioning how my course really taught me nothing, etc, which just makes me feel stupid. And she keeps saying I need to study at home. I mentioned I have and she seemed dubious. Then she was like fine, if I say a PT has to go see an endodontist what does that mean. I said it means they have to see a root canal specialist and she was like "oh, you do know that." Then she asked me about tooth 47 and what it means and I correctly listed what quadrant and position it was in and what tooth it was. Lower right, second molar. . Then she asked me what an MOD was. It's a cavity on the mesial-occlusal-distal surfaces of the teeth, and I got that one right too. FYI, there are 5 surfaces on the teeth. She seemed surprised that I actually know shit. I know they're short staffed and stressed but if you don't want to spend time training someone, then hire someone with experience, not someone just out of school and with no work experience. Honestly, I'm beyond frustrated and on the verge of years. Blah. Jewel, I am sorry for your frustration. I suggest you look up the mandate by the professional association for dentists in Quebec. If it is anything like Ontario, all dental staff and patients (until they are in the treatment chair) are required to wear masks. Staff are required to maintain social distancing during breaks and wear PPE. Plexiglass in the reception area is recommended. I would be surprised if the protocol is different for Quebec. Then she asked me about tooth 47 and what it means and I correctly listed what quadrant and position it was in and what tooth it was. Lower right, second molar. . Then she asked me what an MOD was. It's a cavity on the mesial-occlusal-distal surfaces of the teeth, and I got that one right too. FYI, there are 5 surfaces on the teeth. She seemed surprised that I actually know shit. I know they're short staffed and stressed but if you don't want to spend time training someone, then hire someone with experience, not someone just out of school and with no work experience. Honestly, I'm beyond frustrated and on the verge of years. Blah. Berating a new employee for uncomplete training is on her. You're well out of this situation. Cupid Stunt June 12, 2020 Share June 12, 2020 (edited) MIL Stunt has stabilized: she spiked another fever. It subsided, but she still suffers with a low-grade fever. Her joint pain is about the same. Her congestion is minimal; medical researchers from Cedars-Sinai came to test MIL on the nebulizer treatment. They said she's doing surprisingly well for a woman her age; she was in excellent health before The Corona, played tennis and golf regularly, slightly under-weight for her height, low-fat/carb diet, no chronic illnesses, moderate drinker, etc. They took samples, left secret sauce for her rash and some other test prescriptions. They were very positive about her progress. Thank you God. Because of the continuing wave of coronavirus in Los Angeles, there are 6 confirmed/5 suspected cases at 4 stations in my district; there are similar issues corporate-wide. The confirmed/suspected have been visited by Department of Health and are at home. The facilities were fumigated and tested. The remaining personnel were fumigated and tested. Crap on a Cracker! Her long-term memory is fine, it's retaining what she's just been told has to be repeated. During one of he deliriums, she gave me her George Jones majolica collection. Rather than argue, I thanked her, said it looked beautiful on my dining room table -- And it remains tucked away in her butler's pantry. The next day she didn't remember a thing. It's unsettling. Spent yesterday evening driving to 7 closing JC Penney locations to pick up clearance towels and bed linens for my mother; she ordered some online, but needed more. The Suburban was bulging. I'm leaving Thursday night to visit Mom and Dad for a Father's Day barbecue. Mr. Stunt is staying in town for expected post-production work. Thing 1's printing group is busy with orders from the local VA; they can't get replacement supplies in a timely manner; go figure. Thing 2's busy writing code. In their free time they've been canvassing for online voter's registration. Tomorrow evening the alley neighbors are organizing a New Jack Swing Dance Party in the courtyard of the Corona neighbors; they're still in quarantine. Line dancing lessons will commence. jewel21 June 17, 2020 Share June 17, 2020 @Cupid Stunt thanks for asking. I went in on Friday and the office manager wasn't there. I spilled coffee, spilled food on myself, and was just generally continuing the trend of having a bad week. I spoke with the dentist and told him it would be my last day. He asked why but I couldn't express myself, just got teary. I told him I wasn't comfortable. He asked if we could speak later and I said yes. I went about the day, and told about 3 people in the office it would be my last day. They seemed sad to see me go which was nice. At the end of my shift I went to speak with the dentist but again just couldn't express myself and got emotional. I told him I didn't like the job. He asked if there was anything he could say to change my mind, if I had made up my mind already, and I told him I had made up my mind and no, nothing would change it. I thanked him for the opportunity and left. One of the hygienists asked why I was teary and I told her I was fine. She wished me luck and I left. I had another interview yesterday at a clinic a block away from the other one. It was again a large setting but more English which I appreciated. They have more protocols set for seeing patients and screening for Covid-19. But I just didn't feel comfortable and overwhelmed. I also took the bus with an older woman who was coughing the entire ride and not wearing a mask and covering her face. A gentleman on the metro sat across from me and was sneezing and coughing into the air without a mask while playing on his phone and I got up and moved. Then a crazy person got off at the same stop as me and was yelling to himself and kicking and punching the air. It was concerning. I don't feel comfortable or ready to work and take public transit. The new place also has a start time of 7:30 AM and I know I will be late. The good thing was they finished at 5 PM. My dentist wants me back full time. He's the creepy guy that was touchy feely and the clientele was shit, but maybe if I set some boundaries and try it again it might be better? It's a 15 minute walk from my house so I don't have to take public transit... and it's just him and it's wife so it's a much quieter environment. Maybe it'll allow me to train more with less stress and then I can try a larger clinic setting with multiple dentists when I feel more confident and self-assured... 6 Link to comment

Either he moved, or my angle was off cuz he started to bleed. A lot. And I got faint. Luckily my cousin was there to help stem the bleeding and I had some Kwik Stop styptic power on hand. But OMG.
