Re: "It's time to deliver the profile", AKA "We need to deliver the profile", etc., which has been mentioned in a great many other threads.

To me, it doesn't matter who says it.  Even when it's Hotch, I haven't been able to figure out why NOW is the time, and not an hour ago, or an hour hence, after they discuss whatever they just discovered. Have they just found something that solidifies a profile that they've already discussed? Or have they found something that makes the delivery more urgent?  Is there new information, that is so obvious they don't need to discuss it (since they don't), that makes them reach some conclusion?

Has anyone watched with a better eye for this than I have, or listened with a better ear?  Do any of these things apply?  Or is the line just a throwaway that the writers use to transition to a new scene, destined never to make sense?

JMO, they usually say ITTDTP just after they've batted around a salient point about the Unsub. Whoever is on scene and honing in on the "ding-ding-ding" is the one to say it to the other. The presumption is that once they codify the profile, they must immediately deliver it to the police and public, before someone "scoops" them, i guess.

My take, at least in the last, say, 7-8 years is: spitball, spitball, spitball.... profile!!!!

In Revelations, we saw Reid restrained in a chair, not strung from the ceiling nor put into crucifixion position.  His drugging was a perverse attempt by the mentally ill unsub to help him with his pain. His beatings took place largely off screen, and his torture was mental.  He was able to use his MIND to try to get inside that of the unsub, and thereby save himself.

In (the awful) 200, we  have JJ strung up by the arms, waterboarded, burned (can't remember if it was a taser).  No attempt was made to indicate that it was necessary or desirable to get into the minds of her captors, and we didn't see her make any such effort.  But she did manage to hang prettily off the side of a building.

Now we see Morgan drugged, kicked, abducted by a group of men who look to be carrying out some sort of revenge mission.  They don't appear to be serial killers, and it's doubtful we'll be getting inside their minds. We also see Morgan in full crucifixion position, electrodes attached, torture-ready.

Even when Elle was left for dead, and later Hotch was attacked by Foyet, that was related to the psychology of an UnSub. Randall Garner was angry because his "rules" were broken, and Foyet had made it his mission, no matter how nonsensically, to wreck Aaron's life because Aaron refused to feed his ego by caving in to his demands. And we only saw the surface of what happened, then the emotional impact.

The discussion about the upcoming 'Derek', and the promo for that episode brought me back to our prior two agent kidnappings.  It seems like this current set of writers has become progressively more violent and graphic in their product, having long since abdicated the responsibility to write about criminal MINDS.

To me, the prolonged and repeated depiction of graphic violence and torture in place of  exploring the various psyches involved is a regression in the quality of the writing.  It's simpleton writing.  Claims by some to the contrary, it really doesn't require a whole lot of thought.

We are repeatedly shown what the unsub does, but not why he or she does it.  We're quickly thrown some possible precipitating cause based on the unsub's past history.  But, unlike with Tobias Hankel, we're not brought through the process that led the unsub from there to here.  It's usually some childhood trauma that has caused them to kill a phenotype/personality type/ victim type that seems completely unrelated to the trauma.  Neither our on screen profilers, nor we, get into the mind of the unsub enough to understand how A becomes B. We're left to guess that on our own. Begging the question of why one would need the BAU to be involved.

I would much rather tune in to a battle of wits that engages me thoughtfully, than to be presented with cringe-worthy depictions of graphic violence.  Please come back, Criminal MINDS.

"Happy Wednesday, my nerds!"*

For a brief moment, Spencer, Hold My Earrings, thought Turds of Misery would make a great opening act but then thought better of it....

...especially after Turds of Misery played a cover of this song.

*Yes, I know today is my birthday, and I wasn't going to post a "Happy Wednesday, My Nerds" meme, but these were too good to wait.

I would love it if Prentice came back ... she was the best!!!  And obviously none of the others compared as they've never stuck around for more than an episode.  Do you guys know if it's even a possibility she will resume her role?  They make it seem not in the show but what else is Paget doing nowadays?  Is she in any other shows?

I enjoy Grandfathered. It's light and cute and funny and plays to her comedic strengths.

While I was sad Paget chose to leave at the end of season seven, I understand why she did it. She felt disrespected by CBS and was pissed they exercised her contract option to force her back to work in season seven by threatening to sue her if she didn't return. If CBS hadn't made that dumbass move in 2010 to fire her, she likely would still be with the show.

That was my take on why they did it. And he was great. I also don't credit these writers with being able to come up with a better character for Danny to play if they were to use him in another episode.

I didn't know that, I thought AJ Cook was the one who was fired and PB wanted to leave the show.

No, AJ and Paget were fired at the same time, but the manner was a bit different. AJ was immediately fired, though Ed was able to negotiate two episodes at the start of season six to give her an exit. Paget was given an amended contract that amounted to 18 out of 24 episodes in season six. CBS apparently offered Paget a return to her original contract in December 2010 (likely because they saw the continuing fan anger over her impending departure), but Paget refused and kept her amended contract. Her amended contract gave her a pilot option that allowed her to act in a pilot. However, there was an option in Paget's amended contract that said that if her pilot was not picked up, CBS had the right to force her back to Criminal Minds to serve out the rest of her contract, which was one season. By that point Paget was fed up with CBS, so when it came time to renegotiate her contract during season seven, she declined and elected to walk away from the show.

And an emotional impact is far more effective than gratuitous torture porn. Spencer being tormented and beaten in "Relevations" certainly got to me emotionally, and not just because it featured my favorite CM character.

On a lighter note: Lovely ReidFan, please be a lamb and share those screencaptures from "Mr. Scratch," if you can. ION actually had the balls to re-run it yesterday and it continues to amaze me.

oh Bookish, I completely agree. I've seen Revelations probably 30 times now. I KNOW he's 'okay' eventually. But I still bawl my eyes out every time.

about the Mr Scratch screencaps....I'd share them if you *really* want, but I warn, they're all just of Reid. I run a Facebook group for Reid/MGG and one of the things I do is way too many screencaptures and photo edits of our dear boy. Reidfan is kind of an understatement, ReidObsessed is probably more accurate. Let me know and I will share if you're really *that* interested.

lastly, I asked about the hat in another thread. Could you explain why you hate it?

Darling, ReidFan. There is a very personal reason why "Relevations" gets to me so much. Around 10 years ago I was mugged and severely assaulted while walking home from the grocery store. I was beaten so severely I thought my nose had been broken and my teeth had fallen out of my mouth. I suffered a bloody head injury and needed several X-rays and MRIs to find out if I had any brain damage. Fortunately, my brain wasn't harmed too much. The entire time my assailant was beating me, I thought he was going to drag me into an alleyway and rape me. To this day, I suffer from PTSD, but fortunately I do have a great support system to help me through the bad memories. And in an "interesting" related note-CM's episode "Rabid," which takes place in my home base of Milwaukee, names the street I was mugged on-Lyon. My friend Nora once asked me why I watch CM when I am a crime victim. I told her, "Because ultimately good wins over evil, and it's very cathartic."

Yes, please share your Reid pics. Thanks!

As for the hat. On Spencer's b-day (I think he was turning 24) someone put a stupid cake with candle hat on his head. It was so condescending, and to me, totally infantilized Spencer. Spencer may be the "baby" of the BAU, but he was and still is a grown man!

"Happy Wednesday, my nerds!"

earth-without-art-is-just-eh.jpg

On this day 36 years ago, a multi-talented tall, lanky gentleman with rumpled brown hair and caramel colored eyes with a soft spot for mismatched socks was born. Matthew Gray Gubler. And on this day, Mr. Gubler, keep in mind the wise words Emily Prentiss told a certain Dr. Spencer Reid, "Keep being you."

Matthew, you are now closer to forty than thirty. You are entering, "Kids, get off my lawn!" stage. But don't fret. Rumor has it that it's a pretty cool place. You'll do fine. They even have snacks! Try the sugar mint cookies. I hear they are delicious!

And to all my fellow Reid Lovers!

And all of you had me at, "I love Reid(ing)!"

What's the story behind Mr. Scratch? Why were there complaints and why do they need balls to air it? I didn't think it was any more horrifying than a lot of other episodes.

I would have to agree with you all about Trump. But I also feel the same way about Hillary Clinton. Whom I personally feel is a liar and deceitful. And nothing angers me more than knowing that Trump and his so called shenanigans may very will help propel this woman into the White House. Than again that may be his plan since Trump is supposedly good friends with Hillary and Bill Clinton. If she and Trump do end up with the nominations I will probably just do a write in. I just have to decide whether or not I should write in Matthew Gray Gubler or Dr. Spencer Reid.

People respond to Trump because he isn't a career politician and is beholden to exactly no one. When the election ends, if he doesn't win, he will just go back to being a multi-billionaire and maybe have another season of "Celebrity Apprentice."

I for one appreciate his lack of filter. Is he my ideal candidate? Heavens, no. But is he my pick of this ridiculous litter? Truthfully, yes.

I for one hope I wake up in a few weeks and find that this has all been a terrible dream, and that we all have real, viable candidates from which to choose. But, barring that, let's try and respect each other's choices.

To my mind, the most important thing is turning out the vote. No matter whether you are for big or small government, no matter whether you think people should look out for one another, or just for themselves, no matter whether you think we're all in it together or are meant to go it alone, it's important to have a say in the process.

I work with a population that struggles to put food on the table, and to keep a roof over their heads.  There is a tendency to feel disengaged from the political process, or maybe they just don't have enough energy left at the end of the day.  For whatever reason, there is poor turnout, as they tend  to sit out one election after another.

I don't talk politics with them (mostly).  But I do promote participation.  I've already gotten that stack of voter registration forms ready, and I am already wearing my 'Vote as if you life depends on it' button.  Because it does.
