Via Twitter, @LukeFlux 1 asked:

  • Was there ever anything you wished to do in the Arrowverse that you never got to do, whether it be because of restrictions by WB, budget or other?

*  *  *
I know it’s not at the heart of your question, but your question really makes me think of those things that we did end up doing that were either more difficult or more expensive — or whatnot — than anticipated. For example, Nate’s steel effect on Legends of Tomorrow. Very expensive, particularly to do it properly, with all the reflections. (There’s a reason Colossus’ armor in Deadpool 2 has a matte, non-reflecting finish, is all I’ll say.)

  •  Was there ever more of a desire to involve more of Constantine in Legends of Tomorrow? It was amazing when he appeared in Arrow, and then so much content in Legends (using the same Astra flashback as his solo show?) but I was always hoping for some Manny/rising darkness reference/resolution.

For the uninitiated, Legends series regular Matt Ryan portrayed the DC hero John Constantine in a series that ran on NBC from 2014 to 2015. We brought Matt back to reprise his role in Arrow before bringing him on to Legends. Harvey is asking about bringing plot elements from Constantine into that show.

The answer, Harvey, is that how much to reference the NBC show was a source of constant discussion. On the one hand, you never want to make the audience feel like they have to “do homework” by seeking out a canceled show that ran on another network. On the other hand, Constantine left the airwaves far, far too soon and there was always a desire on the part of the Legends writers to honor that show and its storylines as much as possible. As with anything, you just hope to strike the right balance.

KETO SHIMIZU (DC's Legends of Tomorrow) Interview | The Showrunner Whisperer Episode 01
Multiverse Of Color   Mar 20, 2024

-- Keto Shimizu confirmed that they considered having Zach Braff do the voice for Skeets, Booster Gold's floating robot companion, thus setting up a Scrubs reunion. (Donald Faison guest-starred as Booster Gold in LoT's final episode.) Shimizu also said that having Braff do the voice would be easier than finding money to pay for him to actually be on the show.

THIRD TIME'S THE CHARM?

Quote

I was working on clearing out my iCloud drive the other day and came upon an interesting artifact. The second Arrowverse crossover introduced Vandal Savage, Hawkman and Hawkwoman — all of whom would go on to play major roles in the first season of Legends of Tomorrow.

There’s a key sequence in Arrow Ep. 408 (the second part of the crossover) where Savage fights our heroes and, well, it didn’t turn out particularly well. We’d ran out of time on the day we originally shot it and had to make some compromises on the fly. Once we got into the editing room, however, we realized that the sequence, as shot, didn’t make a lick of narrative sense. Accordingly, I did a rewrite on the sequence and returned to Vancouver for a day’s worth of reshoots.

Reshoots are expensive by virtue of the fact that they’re not initially budgeted for and you certainly don’t want to be in a spot where you have to do reshoots on the reshoots, so the stakes are high. You really have to get it right.

To that end, we painstakingly shot-listed and storyboarded exactly what we needed to get in order to make the revised sequence work.

I think what makes these storyboards particularly interesting is that you can see how the footage from the reshoots is designed to work with the scene as originally shot.

I’ve uploaded those storyboards to Google Drive for your enjoyment. You can check them out by clicking here.

FALSE EQUIVALENCY

This is a fun bit of history/synergy. Originally, Legends of Tomorrow Ep. 309, was conceived of as a story involving a young Martin Stein moving heaven and earth to find the latest in vogue toy for Christmas for his daughter Lily (named after my daughter). Elmo would then get displaced in time and, basically, become a god of war

ce9ae518-972a-4efc-a5c6-e13976712a48_510
This was, as I recall, the brainchild of future Legends showrunner Keto Shimizu. Given the time period of the episode — the 1990s — the toy we had in mind was Tickle Me Elmo. Of course, we knew that we’d eventually have to change the toy to something that wouldn’t get us sued. And thus Beebo was born.

(Though if you’ve ever wondered why Beebo always refers to himself in the third person, you now have your answer.)

Obviously, a new toy/character required a new design, something that would evoke Elmo without angering lawyers. At the time, I was also producing Trollhunters, so I reached out to Linda Chen, one of our amazing concept artists, and she was kind enough to whip up the following potential designs:

4784f02d-fb48-46a9-b418-a77f0cc70387_120 *  *  *
But to answer your question, the two roles that first spring to mind are that of Dinah Drake (Arrow) and Zari Tarazi (Legends of Tomorrow), albeit for different reasons.
*  *  *
Zari was challenging in a very different way. I originally thought that the role would be incredibly difficult to cast on account of the fact that we insisted on a Muslim actor to play this important Muslim character. But as I recall, Tala Ashe came in to audition relatively early in the process and won the role in the room. I think I turned to fellow showrunner Phil Klemmer and was like, “That was a lot easier than I expected.”

Thanks for the great question. I hope I answered it to your satisfaction. For fun, here are the costume designs for both characters

Does it seem like both halves of every single couple, on every TV show, are using “Babe” as the chosen term of endearment? And multiple times within a single, brief conversation? Legends of Tomorrow’s Ava and Sara (sigh, remember them?) regularly set per-episode records with this verbal tic, followed closely by This Is Us‘ Kate and Toby. How would you have liked DC’s Legends of Tomorrow to end? Sadly, fans never got closure in the last episode.

Caity: I would have loved to get an end. It felt a little like, “Come on guys! You can’t do a one-episode wrapup or movie or something?” It would have been cool. Especially, with how they ended things. Booster Gold as Donald Faison was so promising and Sara was pregnant. There was foreshadowing there with me now, ha! I would have loved to get closure for us and the fans. We didn’t even say goodbye. It was like, “See you later. I would love a wrap-up whatever that is, movie, episode. As long as it wasn’t, “We’re just going to have you appear on The Flash.” That would not work. They have to do it properly or not at all. They chose not at all.

Is there anything from the set you took from your character and cherish?

Caity: If I knew the show was ending, I probably would have taken a lot more. I would have been like, “Can I take this and this?” But we didn’t know. I may have been like, “I don’t need that stuff cluttering my house.” Now it’s, “I need that stuff!”I have a lot of wardrobe socks though. I would have wanted my mask maybe. Just the Black Canary mask would have been cool. I do have gifts from fans. Some really beautiful artwork. This one fan made a photobook with every single episode Sara had been in. Her whole journey from Arrow on. It was a thick book. That to me is so cool because you can see every single episode. I have that kind of stuff, which has been good for keepsakes.

MARC GUGGENHEIM (Arrow, DC's Legends of Tomorrow) | The Showrunner Whisperer Episode 08
Multiverse Of Color   Jul 3, 2024

-- MG: "In many ways I'm more proud of the environment that we created on Arrow and Legends than I am of the shows themselves, to be honest with you. Um, particularly Legends - you know, Legends - Legends was - it was such a challenging show for completely different reasons than Arrow was. Um, in many ways, Legends was challenging partially from a production standpoint because it was the first team, you know, series we'd done. And it's like, you know, well, how do you - it's one thing like Flash, he runs fast and they - they've got a system in place for how to produce that. But we've got, you know, a character who turns to steel, we've got a character - we've got two characters who have wings on their back, we have, you know, uh, a character who - his head is literally on fire and he can transmute any material into any other material. Like, I mean, an insane - you know, cold guns, heat guns, you name it. And - and like, how do you - how do you produce all that, uh, with basically - how do you produce, you know, five different sets of superpowers at least, uh, on the same budget and the same schedule that you have for shows that have one superpower? I - I have to say, like, you know, and we also went straight from, you know, presentation plot to series, um, so that had its own challenges. Um, and I have to say, it took - you know, it took a little while, but once we sort of locked in the show creatively and - and locked in the show production-wise, that set was the most fun set to come to. Like, the actors just - they all loved each other. Not that that's not true on other shows, but they - they had a special bond, um, and it was a special bond that I think really showed up on screen. It was just like - it was so - just delightful to come visit that set. I can't, you know, put it any other way."

-- MG: "You know, when we were shooting the end of, uh, the season finale of season 2 of Legends, uh, with the big sort of World War 2 battlefield, um, you know, huge climactic moment, it had snowed the night before and it was - it was covered with snow - like covered with snow... I gotta say, Legends producer Val Stefoff, uh, is - is one of the all-time best line producers I've ever worked with. He - this guy works miracles. In this case, he worked a literal miracle. Um, he got hot water hoses, hot water trucks, out to the location and basically sprayed it down. And like between shoveling and melting the snow and everything - you watch that episode. You would never know that like literally an hour before we were - we were scheduled to shoot, um, it was - it looked like - it looked like a blizzard."

Marc Guggenheim confirmed that, although DC said, yes, more often than they said, no, the only time that really bothered him was "Legends being told that we could no longer use Constantine," so they had to "shift gears" with Matt Ryan. He found it especially disappointing when the planned JJ Abrams Constantine series never came to pass...

Caity Lotz Talks Sara Lance's Legends Of Tomorrow Season 8 Story That Would've Been "Something Unexpected"
By Andy Behbakht   August 6, 2024
https://screenrant.com/legends-of-tomorrow-season-8-sara-lance-story-caity-lotz/

Quote

Screen Rant recently chatted with Lotz for her new film, The Lockdown from Tiger Style Media, where she also spoke a little bit about Legends of Tomorrow season 8 if the show hadn't been canceled. While Lotz was sad to see the Arrowverse drama end unexpectedly, the White Canary actor shared the following:

Yeah, it definitely was a cliffhanger. I mean, after 140 or however many episodes, I did definitely get to explore a lot of stuff with her. But the way that they wrote the show, it was so much fun. There was always room for more because it was so bonkers, and you just do crazy stuff.

But I know we were going to be in prison, so the next season would've started off with us in prison. And I know the pregnancy wasn't going to be a normal pregnancy, which is what I was looking forward to. It wasn't going to just be basically what I am now - because now I'm eight and a half months pregnant, waddling around. They were going to make it a unique alien clone hybrid pregnancy, and the baby would've been something unexpected. Maybe one day we'll get that Legends movie!

Arrow and The Flash got more mainstream attention, but The CW’s zany mashup spinoff, which launched with characters from both shows, was the Arrowverse‘s most creatively ambitious effort. With an ever-evolving cast, cheeky humor and rollicking time-travel adventures, Legends was an absolute delight that deserved so much better than to be unceremoniously axed after its Season 7 finale cliffhanger. Like the lovable, misfit crew of the Waverider, the offshoot was a winning underdog. — V.G.

Brandon Davis   posted Oct 8, 2024

-- MG: "Legends was not originally Legends. Originally the desire was, will you create a third Arrowverse show? And we were going to do Hawkman and Hawkgirl. That's why Hawkman and Hawkgirl are in Season 1 of Legends. But we very quickly realized, like, how is this any different from Arrow or Flash, because we - we knew we didn't want to just do a third show. Like, Arrow is very different from Flash, and Flash is very different from Arrow. Whatever the third show was, it had to be very different from both those shows... We were like, okay, we haven't done an ensemble yet. We haven't done a group, a team.... So here that is. And then, of course, it just became even more weird and - and different."
