S02.E14: Darkest Before Dawn

T.C. and Topher return to find Jordan in critical condition and San Antonio terrorized by snipers.

Season finale time!

So, as expected, Jordan didn't die, but she did end up losing the baby, despite T.C. and Scott's efforts. T.C. still proposes though, but we don't get an answer.  But I have to think she will say yes.  I'm sure they'll find plenty of ways to create drama during their engagement.

Also, during all of that stuff, we got flashbacks of both T.C./Jordan meeting for the first time and then breaking up, and randomly, when Jordan and Scott first met.  I hope this doesn't mean they are bringing back a love triangle.  Speaking of which, had they mention before that Jordan and Scott met by the cliched "She accidentally back into his car, but he was so damn charmed, that he asked her out" story?  Because that had me rolling my eyes.

Mainly though, I was just disappointed by the lack of crazy flashback hair.  One of my favorite guilty pleasures about flashbacks, is seeing the regulars in goofy wigs and whatnot.  Here, T.C. was just clean shaven, and Jordan pretty much look the same. Boo!  I wanted the others too!  I wanted Topher with a mullet, Kenny with an afro, and Drew rocking a pornstache, dammit!

Speaking of getting married, not only is Rick sticking around, it sounds like he and Drew are just going to go ahead and elope.  That's cool, I guess.  Just hope Drew doesn't mess it up.

Topher saves his friend, but now his wife is pissed at him, for always thinking about the patients before his family.  Kind of wish we had more build-up to this, because it kind of came out of nowhere.

The whole sniper thing didn't seem to amount to much.  Only thing that really came out of it was it somehow led to Paul decided to task the risky surgery, as opposed to just playing it safe.  I did like that Ragosa was willing to help him with the decision.

Chavez is back!  Well, briefly, at least.  I know they keep saying he has a three year commitment to the Doctors Without Borders program, but I hope they find some way to just move him onto the show permanently.

Can't wait to see what craziness will arise next season!

It may just be that I am incredibly emotionally labile right now (that's a USMLE word for you), but that made my entire night.  And if we're lucky, by the time the show comes back, it'll be official in Texas for them as well.

I swore the sniper groupie was one of the Olsen twins.  Was she supposed to be the second sniper?

I was clutching my pearls when Drew was at the sniper site and was in the sniper's scope.

And they kissed on the lips!  Progress.

Would have been nice if they'd invited Krista for their impromptu matrimonial road trip to New Mexico.

Yes.  They were playing off the Beltway Snipers who willed a bunch of people in the Washington DC area in the fall of 2002.

Was there literally any other hospital in the world where they could have taken Ali?

Thanks for the recap, thug. I was watching The Bachelorette (I know, heh) while I worked and forgot entirely about Night Shift so didn't even get to watch it during commercial breaks on TB.

So what happened to Jordan that she passed out and ... went into a comma? And please, if it were that easy to lose a baby, abortion clinics would go out of business.

Yeah, it would have been a hoot to see flashback hairstyles, like when Jerry and George did the back-in-high-school scenes. But they haven't been back from the war long enough to really change styles, though, have they? Unless they all met before tour of duty.

I understand Chavez's pilot was canceled so yeah, I'm hoping for a return next season. But is NS coming back next season?

I didn't quite catch everything, but based on something Scott said, I think Jordan had a condition called eclampsia, It happens when a pregnant woman's blood pressure goes very, very high and can lead to seizures and coma.  He mentioned giving her a drug called magnesium sulfate, which is used to treat it.  It usually happens later in pregnancy, and considering they never seemed to be quite clear on how far along she was, the timing seemed a little off, but when doesn't it on this show?  The only way to absolutely treat it is to get rid of the placenta, and in women who are far enough along, they can induce labor.  Jordan wasn't.  It actually is more common in first time pregnancies, so that wasn't completely outside the realm of possibility.

Wow, I studied something, I applied it.  Maybe this is working.

Hey, thanks starri. I do know about eclampsia, having birthed many farm-animal babies over the decades. Okay, so now it makes sense, or as much sense as anything does on this show. Just be sure when you take your boards that you apply BOOK learning and not NIGHT SHIFT learning to those medical questions, starri!

I thought the same! Maybe the Olsens have a clone factory somewhere? Anhyway, she was veeery creepy with her angel face and weird behavior. I knew there was something off with her, but I mostly thought of trying to hide abuse or something. Acting-wise, she was a stand-out imo and had presence.

And I was clutching my pearls when my Doctor Ragosa was in the elevator with her and she had the knife. For a moment I was certain he'd be Lucy-Knighted.

Chavez! It was His Hotness Chavez! Boo, he's gone and broke-up with Krista. Do not like.

The show had gotten boring those past weeks for me. Too much Kenny and his girlfriend that I still can't get to care about, there was an episode about them I didn't even watch until the end. And I didn't like the competition between Paul and Krista, I preferred them as supportive toward each other.

I'm not against the military storylines but stay in San Antonio, thank you. Otherwise it feels like JAG and no thanks.

Still love Ragosa and Topher above everyone else, I'm glad that Drew and Rick are back and good together (but L.Macfarlane is starring on another new show, so will he stay?) and Scott is now definitely one of my favorite. He works great with Topher, I think.

The first half of the season, for me, was stronger than the last. My wish list, then:

Keep Chavez.

Get Landry back. Now. Then, get Landry and Ragosa together and have her own the beyotch he used to be married with (for talking him down to their kids).

Keep Topher happily married even though marriage is a lot of work.

DNR Scott/Jordan/TC, thank you. If there is some desperate need for a love triangle, try a Chavez/Krista/Scott.

More friendships: Drew/Krista/Paul/Ragosa, Ragosa/Topher/Scott, Scott/Topher/Chavez, Chavez/Topher/TC. And develop friendships for Jordan, she's imo the most isolated character and works well with Paul, Ragosa and Scott (platonic).

Stay OTT for the plots, keep the sense for character development.

The Rick/ Drew scene made the whole night for me.

Ooh, I hadn't head that. Good for Luke. Depending on the show, I would think he could still manage an episode or two of The Night Shift, which is about all non-hospital working significant others tend to get around here, right? We saw Janet once all season. Though I'd certainly like to see more of Rick.

Mainly though, I was just disappointed by the lack of crazy flashback hair.

My biggest disappointment was not finding out TC's name! I thought Jordan might ask in the first flashback, and then I thought she might use it in the proposal scene after he called her by her full name, but no dice. Maybe if we get a wedding next year. Otherwise, I'm giving up.

Keep Chavez.

This! I'm not sure whether to be hopeful or not. I know the finale was filmed before they knew if Rodriguez's pilot was picked up or not, but it felt weird to bring him back just to have Krista break up with him. Why not keep it as a casual long-distance thing and leave the door open for next year? Not that he possibly can't come back again... fingers crossed!

Am I wrong in thinking that Scott is a general surgeon? Is it normal for them to do heart transplants? And the Ali-fever storyline felt like a re-tread of the Deacon story on Nashville.

It was also a retread of a story on ER.

Not only is Scott not a transplant surgeon, in an episode last season, they made a big deal out of that fact when Topher and TC's buddy who had received TC's brother's heart needed surgery, they essentially strong-armed Ragosa into giving the surgeon, who was not on staff at SAMH, surgical privileges, so she could operate.

It's funny, there have been more than a few questions that I've gotten right (meaning that I can identify the actual disease, not necessarily answer the specific question immediately) because the patient presentation is something similar to what I've seen on TV.  And from what my classmate have told me, that's not uncommon.

I was so afraid that when Ragosa and the crazy sniper girl go on the elevator that she was going to stab him! So glad they didnt go there. As much as I hated Ragosa last season, they really redeemed him and I kind of love him now.

Also, Love Drew and Rick! I so want to be their neighbor!

Agree, bring Chavez back. Keep Topher with his family, and give Scott a girlfriend.

I like Kenny but I want him to have another girlfriend, someone who doesn't work at the hospital.  I don't like the EMT whatshername.  She just seems like such a downer and maybe it's just her personality but she just seems "older."

But due to the nature of the show, if you want any kind of character/ relationship development, she has to work in or around the hospital (unless she's a patient... but please don't go there, show), or we'll never see her.

Oh, this whole show is a retread of ER! I'm just glad they didn't go all stabby with the knife girl.

Me too. I would be out in the yard "cutting grass, pulling weeds" whenever one or both of them were outside. Or else sitting in my window (peeking through blinds) to watch their handsomeness whenever they were in their yard. Stalker!

Oh I know but I don't need to see her that often; just have her come to the hospital once and Kenny introduces her.  He can talk about her afterwards, kind of like Topher talks about Janet (bedore she showed up).  Or just have her show up once in a blue moon, that's all.  I'm just tired of the worn out hospital romances trope.

So, does this mean Jordan's future pregnancies will always be dangerous? Or can she have a normal pregnancy after this?

If the rules of TNS follow medical science (big if), she will be at an increased risk of having the condition again, but knowing that ahead of time, it can be managed before it gets to the stage where she HAD to deliver/terminate.

I'm not embarrassed to say that I watched the part with Rick & Drew 5 times in a row. I love them so much.

This was a wholly satisfying season finale. Except for the part about Scott performing the heart transplant. HE WOULD NOT BE DOING THIS SURGERY. Anyway, I'm interested to see where TC and Jordan go from here.

We can not be embarrassed together.  I think it says good things both about Drew's growth as a character as well as Brendan Fehr's increased comfort in the role.

I watched that part at least 10 times in like 10 minutes!.I also rewatched all the parts with TC and Jordan! I just wished they would have put in more flashbacks. I mean we're going into the 3rd season, we might as well get to know our charaters!! Not just Jordan's past, but everyone else's as well.

I was honestly shocked that they looked so similar! I mean they we're years younger, they should have looked at least a little different! And as much as I hope she says yes, the look on her face didn't look too promising, although it could be because she was really upset!

Ok everyone PLEASE listen to this. Scott HAS a girlfriend. Or at least he did. If you go earlier in the season, you SEE him with her. I think episode 3 of season two, not sure but if you go back you WILL

see him with her.
