Well I need to spend a little time eulogizing Defending Your Life. I thought it was really good. I liked the villain Osiris. He was fun and yet ruthless. I liked that Bobby immediately knew that they needed to get out of town. I liked that Dean found a sweet girl for a potential hookup. And of course the BEST SCENE EVER was Dean getting to talk to Jo.  It was such a heartfelt scene. Even though he's completely depressed all of S7, I still felt like it did him some good to see her. And of course, it was great to see them interact.  So...I'll be grossly sobbing in a corner for my Dean/Jo ship and torturing you all with a picture to boot:

Iguana, "Hello Cruel World" was the episode where Sam started having his really bad Lucifer visions and freaked out. It had the "stone one" speech including one my favorite Dean quotes "This discussion does not require a weapons discharge." It also included the destruction of Bobby's and Dean's heartfelt plea that he not be dead. "Time After Time..." was the episode whereDean ended up back in time with Elliot Ness and he and Sam (and Jodi Mills) worked to get Dean back, and they still were able to work together even though they were decades apart.

I was wondering why Time After Time was so popular and then I remembered how good Dean looked in his period clothes (and he looked really, really good) but I don't really remember anything else in that episode being that noteworthy? Besides Krycek playing Ness, of course.

It was a great episode with Dean being gobsmacked at working with Eliot Ness who he adored. They used phrases like 'bindlestiff" and Eliot could not understand why Dean kept saying everything was awesome because back then it meant being filled with awe.  They had a great original score.  And it's fucking Krycek! and Logan from Veronica Mars.   What more do you need! :)  I may or may not love that episode beyond Dean's awesome clothing.

...And we had Sam and Dean both working together to save Dean even though they were decades apart in time. But Dean was able to figure Sam out enough - and trust him enough - to know the exact place to plant him a note that he'd find in the future. (Though Dean made the crappiest friendly neighborhood exterminator ever. I'm pretty sure that's not remotely how you inspect for termites - hee.) And Jodi was helpful and adorable and tried to get Sam to rest since he was working himself to exhaustion to get Dean back - and we got to see Sam's "case board." Oh and Elliot Ness' assistant was also pretty awesome in my book. She made sure Dean looked the part. Like catrox14, I may or may not love that episode a bit too much.

I'll have to watch Time After Time again--I completely forgot that Jason Dohring was in it and I watched it like a month ago! (My life has been pretty crazy lately.)  Watching that episode isn't a hardship, though, because I do think it's one of Dean's top looks in the whole series.  That was one nice suit.

I'll take out Adventures In Babysitting, but not because I thought it was bad, I just know there are others that are better. I actually rather like this episode as I always enjoyed Frank along with Krissy and her dad. I liked how both Sam and Dean were grieving in their own ways--Dean still not accepting the loss and choosing to go hang with Frank--the new Bobby--in order to dole out some revenge for Bobby's death; and Sam wanting to help Krissy thinking its what Bobby would want. Plus, I like how Dean easily finds Sam and I also enjoy the scenes with Dean and Krissy. And, I'm a bit of a sucker for a good musical interlude and Traffic, most definitely, isn't a bad one. Do I think Dean dressed up in a telephone worker's garb and playing around with a lift truck was pointless? Of course I do sillies, but I can also easily pretend it's not there too.

Okay, I should, but I just can't kill either of the bottom two episodes. I actually like them both. I've already mentioned what I liked about "Survival..." so now I'll do "Out With the Old" as a sort of early eulogy...

 

I should dislike "Out With the Old" because much of it is really only plot tangential, and it's leviathans, but I can't help it. Some of the cursed objects are fun in a macabre way and/or appeal to 12 year old me in the same vein as dick jokes, and that head leviathan lady was so awful in a fun way - you know one of those annoying people who you would hate to know in real life, but can't help but snicker when the other bad guy underling has to deal with her and snicker even more when said underling hates working for her so much he'd rather help Sam and Dean.  For me she was just so awesomely precise with her special coffee and her one pump and one pump only. (And coffee guy was so banally great too - "you're holding up the line, so just enjoy your free pump. Next!") And how she was just so sure that everyone around her was so incompetent and would never have the gumption to question her. While I myself was wondering how a previous minion hadn't already strangled her - hee. I wonder if the lady whose place she took was a little like her. I've lately been considering that leviathans - like shapeshifters - are affected by their "hosts" more than I originally thought, and so part of their downfall was that they were somewhat restricted by the personalities they took on - thus that worked against them in their takeover plot.

I don't agree at all that Slash Fiction is just some fun diversion with no importance to the season. IMO not only was it fun with the LeviaChesters, it shifted the entire course of the season with game changing developments and introduced Dick Roman.

 

--It showed just how deadly and dangerous the Leviathan were and how hard it is to kill them.

--We got hints about a possible budding romance between Bobby and Jody.

--It made the boys serial killers and 10 most wanted criminals in the country and then had them declared dead

--We met Frank who helps the boys go underground because of being dead now ...

--Dean had to give up Baby....I REPEAT...Dean had to GIVE UP BABY. That is probably what sent Dean into his downward spiral.

--Sam learns Dean's secret about killing Amy because of a taunt by Levia!Dean.

--Dean says "That felt good" when he lopped off his doppelgangers head...which wow...that says something about Dean's state of mind IMO

--We meet Dick Roman who scares frakking Crowley!

--The boys broke up and went their separate ways because of the Amy issue.

I didn't say it didn't have any importance to the season; being diversionary fun doesn't automatically mean its not important to the whole narrative too. I was just explaining my reason for down voting it in less than 20 words. Didn't mean to cause any offense.

 

So I guess I need more than 20 words here...I just feel there's others that are better in terms of overall quality and to me Slash Fiction was conceived and done mostly because they thought it was a funny idea rather than them finding a way to make it seamless and organic to the universe and the season at large. Yes, there are things that tie in, but it's also entirely ridiculous to me their doppelgangers go on this big nationally televised killing spree only to be forgotten about after.  However, I adore Frank's introduction and its always nice to see Jodi and will never not find that moment Dean's singing to All Out Of Love not funny, the rest of it just doesn't hold up as well, FOR ME, over time. I realize by the count, it's not how others feel about it and I'm cool with it.

 

Personally, I find Hello, Cruel World to be probably the best overall episode of the season, in terms overall quality with the writing, directing and acting all on their best footing. As a concept, I'd say At Death's Door is probably the best of the season, but some of the execution doesn't hold up as well for me. In terms of plot movement and big reveals, Reading Is Fundamental would be my pick. The ones I enjoy watching most though, are Time After Time After Time, Plucky Pennywhistle's Magical Menagerie and The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo. I enjoy Slash Fiction fine enough and wouldn't ever skip it, just find I enjoy others more.

Fixed an error with count, so it should be correct now.  Although I do like Slash Fiction, I hate the Amy breakup scene with a passion.  So no it can't be the best for me.

 

SueB I'll join you in mourning Defending Your Life for all the reasons you stated.  I will also add I wish the secret had come out during the trail and forcing Sam to decide if he would still defend Dean.   There are places where the fumbled the ball on this one but I thought the concept was such a talented idea and I think that is my problem with Gamble.  She had such a talent but I don't think she can do it all alone, she needs a strong partner.  But I believe that about all of them. 

 

Plus I do get bored with the dick jokes, they are funny once then move on.  The big bad this season looked interesting but turned into a big nothing.  JMV

I LIKED The Girl with The Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo, so someone else will have to kill it.

Survival of the Fittest didn't get much love but I did like the return of Baby. The #1 mistake Sera Gamble made was putting Baby in a corner.  How did she not get this???  *sigh* I liked Dick Roman's doppleganger tactic and Cas being the ONLY one to see the real him. I disliked how much STUFF they jammed into that final episode. But I did like sending Dean and Cas to purgatory (does that make me mean??).

I'll kill The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragons Tattoo.  I often tend to like the concept of Charlie better than the reality.  This is definitely one of Charlie's episodes where I appreciated what the writers were trying to do with her character (a female character who's not a demon or ambiguously evil, who's smart, who's cute interacting with Dean, etc.) but I didn't really like her in actuality (I liked Charlie later, though, in season 8)

I like the little caper and I liked Charlie here (actually, it'd be the only time I liked Charlie) and Dick Roman was seriously creepy, the introduction of the tablet and Bobby all worked well for me. There Will Be Blood had the awesome Rick Worthy in it.  And that made it a worthy episode.  Sorry. I had to. You KNOW I had to.

 

Repo Man is actually one I enjoy quite a bit.  The actor who played Jeffery was perfect in that role.  And I loved how the halfway house encouraged him in his goals (to become a serial killer...but hey, the process worked!).  But he killed the dog. So, evil. Jeffery needed bibbing.
