Mommy Dearest had many delightful and painful moments. Delightful: Get out of my ass! Jefferson Starships. Eat Me! Painful: Lenore. Little Ryan. I felt bad for Cas (Baby in a trenchcoat - Dean, you ass).

Frontierland was fun for the cosplay but it just didn't win me over like Time After Time (next season).

French Mistake was high concept and the best part was the death of Kripke.  But it wasn't my favorite episode of the year.

Farewell "Mommy Dearest." Such a fun episode. The beginning montage was appropriately horrible in its juxtaposition. The Jefferson Starship thing was fun. Dean's plan was brilliant, and the end with Cas and Crowley... I didn't see that coming. But then so many things made sense - like Cas being squirrelly about Sam's soul. Well, done show, well done.

Don't think I could add more to the praise for "Frontierland" except that I loved the whole Clint Eastwood exchange.

Frontierland was fun for the cosplay but it just didn't win me over like Time After Time (next season).

I loved "Time After Time..." Season 7s gonna be another one where it'll be tough for me to choose amongst my favorites, 'cuz I have so many, but since most of my favs are gone here now, the choice is easy...

Great final two! S6 has definite clunkers, but it's been fun to recall that it has a few genuinely awesome episodes as well :)

And thus Season 6 is in the books for now.

Appointment at Samarra is one of those "can't lose" episodes because Death shows up.  And, as usual, when he's on the screen it's just riveting.  The dialog, the actor, the interplay with Dean. I think I stop breathing a bit when they are interacting. I loved the use of Robert Englund in this role, along with creepy goth nurse-ish. Tessa/Dean have excellent interaction and although the test and outcome are reasonably predictable, it's still a good watch. Watching Bobby and Soulless Sam? Only accomplished hiding behind my fingers partially over my eyes. I was so proud of Bobby building that trap door. And then the idjit had to go on the prowl looking for Sam.  Arrrrgggg.  In the end, it worked out but it raised my blood pressure. And it made perfect sense that Death could crack the cage.  And excellent resolution IMO to Soulless Sam.

Weekend At Bobby's turns out on top in this little game.  But it's just brilliant from start to finish so there's a reason WHY it's at the top.  The Rufus and Bobby team up ('you gotta help me bury a body', 'don't swallow it'/'alright I swallowed it', etc..). I was ready for a spin-off right there. Woodchipper beats everything. Bobby beating the King of Hell.  That's pretty damn hard to do and so I was proud of him for doing it. The little snippets of Sam and Dean were great (Bobby's roast recipe). Jodi Mills exasperation when finding out he had a body outside AND another in the basement. And then the phone bank (no, Garth, the REAL FBI; how are you even alive?). This was such a wonderful world-building episode. Mostly just full of fun and laughter but enough drama that it never crossed over to farce. Like many series who attempt a "Lower Decks"* story, this episode is a memorable one that fleshes out the SPN universe while telling a good tale.

**Star Trek: The Next Generation "Lower Decks" episode was the first to really pull focus from the main actors for an episode.

Well, I'm one of those people with exactly two S7 episodes I remember actually liking (although I do also remember appreciating various components of at least five other episodes), so this should be interesting. I'm actually very open to be reminded/convinced of the value of certain other episodes, so I'm game for this round too.

As someone pointed out to me earlier, S7 has a lot of even, but middle ground episodes, some I like a little more than others, but very little I am overly attached to (not like 90 percent of S2 anyway) and nothing rage inducing.  So, it may be less of people not liking the episode so much as just not liking it as much as others. But, I actually like The Girl Next Door other than the arguing and yelling the episode produces over the Amy angst anyway. I think it's a good solid episode and Jensen did a great job directing it. And yes, I'd probably say it's better than Defending Your Life, but mostly because I find what Dean's on trial for to be a bit nonsensical. It was really nice to see Jo again though.

Well, like I said, never cared for the Amy angst and don't know why it needed to be drug out past this episode. And, if I had my druthers, Dean wouldn't have killed Amy, but I'm not too bothered by it either. I'm not saying it's at the top of the season for me; it's just not at the bottom is all.

I didn't like the choice of having all the flashbacks in that sepia tone. It took me right out of the story which I blame Jensen for. I do think he did a great job with getting a wonderful performance from Colin Ford. And I shouldnt blame him for the script.

Link to comment

I blame the sepia tone on flashbacks. Every show feels the need to do something overtly obvious when dealing with flashbacks because, apparently, us viewers are too stupid to know it's not a flashback otherwise. One of the myriad of reasons why I generally loathe flashbacks. All the flashback episodes on this show have a golden tone to them, it's the show's visual style for these things. I'm just thankful they didn't also do the icky out of focus thing some shows do. Those make me totally nauseous when watching.

I liked the opener and the bit in the cabin. Hated the kill Amy story line which ended up as a major season arc that I just never liked.

I disagree with it being a major season arc. It was a little manipulative in some ways and melodramatic, but it was over in 4 episodes and in my opinion was wrapped up very well in "The Mentalists" where the brothers actually listened to each other and came to a mutual agreement with a minimum of yelling. All of those things - the 4 episode wrap up, the actual communication, the mutual agreement with the equivalent of apologies on both sides, and the minimum of yelling - making this for me one of the better conflict resolutions the brothers ever had on this show.

In addition to that, I'm generally surprised on rewatches that the non-Amy killing parts of that episode are often better than I remembered them. I liked the insight into Sam's life here, and that it showed that Sam was not all blowing off his family responsibilities when it came to hunting, but actually helped even in his teens. And in general yes, I find it better than "Defending Your Life" which not only making Sam look like an idiot, in my opinion, didn't make a whole lot of sense either. I'm also sometimes rather burned out when it comes to Dean guilt stories and a whole episode of Dean guilt just isn't my favorite. Miles of course always vary.

amensisterfriend, Slash Fiction is one of my favourite eps as well. The scene in the diner where Leviathan Sam and Leviathan Dean essentially deconstruct the Winchesters in a few sentences (It's like eating self righteousness) is one of the funniest and best scenes in the whole series.

I loved the idea of Defending Your Life.  I loved how they used Jo in this one but the whole Amy issue just turns my stomach.  NO WAY was it the issue that Dean felt the most guilty about and for that I can't save it.  I won't kill it, but I won't save it either.  If it had better writers and gone for what the real issues, it could have been awesome instead it divided the fan base over really nothing.

I just didn't understand the point of Defending Your Life.  I mean guilt is such a weird thing in this show, so for me it was just to push forward the Amy secret. Now what would have been really compelling is to have the secret come out in the trial and then Sam would have been faced with whether he could continue to defend Dean. Now that would have been far more interesting.

But I guess they wanted to wait to have Sam learn the secret from Leviathan!Dean to make it seem like regular!Dean was just an absolute monster for killing a monster. And gods that horrible breakup scene is just laughably bad.  "I can't even look at you right now".  Really? I can't imagine how bad it was if Jared and Jensen felt strongly enough to rewrite it and it still was terrible.

Unpopular opinion about the wedding episode.  I kind of loved the demon and it did have some funny moments especially Dean's freaking out about Sam getting married. But aside from that? YIKES

Season Seven: Time for a Wedding!

Bibbed is Awesome (as Dean might say). I definitely laughed when I first read it.

I also kind of liked the wedding episode--mainly cause of Dean's reactions. First to Sam and Becky and then to Garth. I think Garth's introduction is also well done here (I really like how Garth is goofy, and the polar opposite to Dean, but also competent). All the Becky stuff is awful though, of course.

Catrox, bibbed is perfect.

And with the swift and sure death of season seven time for a wedding my limited faith in humanity remains shakily in place. I thank you all. I loathed this episode witn the white hot intensity of a galactic cluster. Whatever the slight positives that some of you have raised, for me, becky's ongoing sexual assault/sex slaving Sam creates a black hole that pulls the ep down into the deepest darkest depths of suck.

I kind of agree with catrox about liking the demon in "Season 7, Time For A Wedding." There was just a whole lot of yikes there though. It probably says a lot that my favorite line in the episode is Sam's only somewhat muffled "Fuck you!" (I'm still not sure how that one got by the censors.) And Becky's totally oblivious retort "I love you, too." That obliviousness kinda sums it up right there.

Now I'm picturing you having a bunch of little monsters you keep in your back pocket for just such occasions. ;)

ETA; would a Leviathan find a sock puppet filling even if they were small enough to fit in catrox's back pocket?
