Artists and Songs You've Managed to Avoid Hearing

This is the topic where you can confess to actively avoiding listening to artists and songs that are seemingly everywhere but which you've managed to completely escape.

How long were you able to avoid listening, if you couldn't manage to do it forever?

I managed to completely avoid hearing "My Heart Will Go On" for two and a half years.

I have only heard about 5 seconds of "Let It Go."  (Partially explained by the fact that I don't have kids)

"Angel" -- Sarah Mclachlan -- For quite some time. Can't listen to it due to hearing it right after I heard a friend was killed by a drunk driver.

"Love Shack" -- the B-52's -- Haven't heard this one in a while. Don't like this song.

Somehow, I have never heard Meghan Traynor's version of All About That Bass.  I love the Kate Davis version posted on the "Covers That Are Better" thread, though. I attribute this feat to diligently avoiding the Top Ten stations on the radio.

The only Taylor Swift song I know is "Love Story".  I have successfully managed to avoid her since.  I wouldn't know any of her others if I hear them.  Same with Drake.

I have never heard an entire song by Justin Bieber or Taylor Swift. My ears are grateful.

I've managed to completely avoid Justin Bieber and One Direction. One Direction has been particularly difficult because when they were on SiriusXM all the time I'd see "Story of My Life" labelled and get excited thinking it was Social Distortion.

It never was.

Taylor Swift was one I managed to avoid until I went to a freaking hockey game last year and they played her stuff between periods. These two girls sitting behind me were singing along and I asked who it was. "Taylor Swift!" Said with some 'are you serious' inflection that I ignored. Hey, I'll never be ashamed of not being able to recognize her music.

The thing is, I probably have heard all of them because I shop in stores and all that and they seem to infiltrate everywhere but I don't recognize them and none of them have ever gotten stuck in my head so I can continue to claim ignorance.

I'm sure that's the case with me as well, but I blissfully live in ignorance of not knowing which crappy artist is being put upon me. I absolutely avoid most pop radio if I can. Not because I hate pop, but because the state of pop these days is horribly stale and repetitive.

So many. I feel so out of touch. It's my own doing though. I choose to listen to 'retro' stations. When I was in middle/high school, I was up on most of the popular stuff because of TRL (Carson Daly forevah!), but not anymore. I've turned into one of those 'music was better back in my day' types and I'm only 29, lol.

When I'm driving anywhere, I listen to the classic rock stations.

When I'm at home, I listen to the Sirius channels. My fave is Hair Nation, but I also like Love, 90s on 9 and 80s on 8. Now if they'd just make a boyband channel, I'd be all set.

How does that work? When I bought my car, it came with a year of Sirius. I got hooked on 70s on 7, 80s on 8, Classic Vinyl and Classic Rewind. I can't justify paying for radio since I'm self employed and not in my car for a daily commute, but I love the free previews, and one is coming up next week! Anyway, I've tried logging in to listen online, but I guess it doesn't work since I'm not a paid subscriber.

Well for me, it's part of my Dish Network package.

The only radio station I listen to is alt rock/pop, so I have manged to avoid almost all rap.  Even when there is rap inserted in a pop song, like Justin Timberlake and Katy Perry songs, the station cuts out the rap parts (the station's motto is "All the hits minus the rap"), so I don't even hear the most popular rap music and I don't even know the rappers.

I tend to avoid the current pop stations in the car as well. I tend to have a rotation on SiriusXM: 60s, 70s, 80s (sometimes 90s and Pop2K.) First Wave, The Bridge, Lithium. Classic Vinyl, Classic Rewind and Alt Nation. Those are my heavy hitters. Pop2K I tend to land on when the Killers or Franz Ferdinand is on. And then I'll wander elsewhere when the mood strikes me: Opera, Symphony, Real Jazz, Simply Sinatra. Good stuff all of it.

But because of that, I do manage to successfully avoid a lot of the current pop so it's quite nice.

I listen primarily to a progressive broadcast station, and they play stuff all over the map, from Lucinda Williams to Trombone Shorty to Frank Sinatra when the morning guy gets pissy; they play a lot of upcoming artists, which I like.  It's a safe bet they won't play Katy Perry, One Direction, etc.  When they let me down - like when they overplayed the Kongos for a little while, I switch to the iPod or classical music on the local NPR.

The radio in my husband's truck gets iffy reception, but it seems he can always get WALK from Long Island.  When they play Taylor Dane or JLo (usually Let's Get Loud), he's all like "WALK does not disappoint!"  Because after a while if that's the one station you get, you just learn to roll with it.

Reference to it in another thread made me realize I've managed to avoid Blurred Lines.  I've heard about it many times, due to the offensive lyrics, but I've never heard it; Word Crimes was a brand new song to my ears.

Better for my blood pressure that way.

I could not identify a One Direction or Jonas Brothers song if my life depended on it, but I'm sure I've been exposed to at least one.

I have not heard Taylor Swift's latest song, and that is just fine by me.

I've also been able to avoid "Blurred Lines," so "Word Crimes" is the best thing ever as far as I'm concerned.

I've never heard a Bieber song, or "Call Me Maybe," or "Shake It Off," or any of the "bro country" that's out there, and I feel better for it.
