Small Talk: Chili's

I have to say, our new t.v. is NICE. Smart t.v. with a little Netflix button. Web browsing. A USB drive where I can just plug in my thumb drive and watch all my "acquired" videos.

How good are they? I have a Samsung LED smart tv which has the USB ports as well as a network cable input.. our whole house is cabled so we have the TV hooked up to our router and all our movies/tv are on our NAS (essentially a big storage device.. it has 4harddrives in it) so we can play off it!

It's so awesome!

I got lamp!  Watching Royals vs O's.

ps - funny thing though. My cousin who I share Walking Dead thoughts/info with, she emailed me this morning that this most recent ep was put online already. I shall watch that on the BigAss TV tonight, nonetheless.

ps2- something was bugging me about the new U2 song that I hear on the radio- "Miracle of Joey Ramone." (not that it was a free download, I'm ok with that) This morning the song came on after Coldplay. Now I think U2 was trying to make a Coldplay type song with Miracle...  Any of you heard the song, am I right or what? ( I didn't see an appropriate thread in the music section for my deduction.)

Well look who celebrates another year of a spin around the sun. JK, the Treeclimbee himself.

I know on Bob's Burgers there was a storyline of the kids keeping track of neighbor's treat-giving tendencies. But for myself, I never would think to keep in mind what the neighbor might be wearing while dispensing treats. Recycle, possibilities!

Glory I hit the link to see what cracked you up. Glad you found Guts because ... no clue over here that those shirts have any meaning.

It dawned on me that I don't think ANY Hateball player posts here. So you should know. I'm in first place in both leagues. Undefeated. Yah, that's it, that's the ticket. Uncontested. Too Awesome. My wife, the wonderful ... uh, Morgan Fairchild, that's it - no, that's not it. Um, I'm not married, but having an affair with -- Angie Harmon! Yes, that's it.  She and I wish you all the best this halloween.

Oh wait. MichelleAK, she posts. Dammit.

Did we talk about Halloween costumes yet? I think Guts and I are going as contestants from Legends of the Hidden Temple. I saw this on Pinterest and just lost it, I was laughing so hard. Going to order our shirts today.

These are amazing!  I'm not sure I'm going out for Halloween this year, otherwise I might order one too!  Which team(s) are you all going as, Glory?

Last year I went as a homecoming queen runner up (or prom queen runner up, or Miss America runner up, your pick!).  Wore an old bridesmaid dress, a tiara, made a "First Runner Up" sash and then fixed my makeup with mascara tear streaks down my face.  It was quite a hit!

I'm changing the subject because I feel like it. Last week I managed to hit the gym three times.

Over the winter last year I gained 10 pounds and haven't managed to lose it. I absolutely cannot gain another 10 pounds this winter so I'm making appointments in my calendar to get to the gym and blocking them out on my outlook just like a regular appointment. Last week, it worked nicely. I'm hoping to keep this up.

Fall and winter is always hard for me because I like to bake and cook. I really need to buckle down!

I know. I think it was fall/winter when on twop I brought up the whole thing when I attempted my oatmeal raisin cookie-making. I haven't made any cookies in a long time. Like you, I'm still trying to lose the LBs. I picked up a fitbit in May, and with the treadmill and dog walks I get 12k- 14k steps/ day. But the days I can't hit the treadmill all depend on how busy work is. The dog still gets her walk 2x a day.  Good luck and keep going at it Glory!

I keep having "This is Halloween! This is Halloween!" running through my brain and those are the only lyrics I know to that, and I'm not sure what it's even from (maybe Nightmare before Christmas?) I know, I could Google it. Too lazy. The other thing running through my brain is, "Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate..." and some of the other rhyming lyrics from Shake it Off. So my brain is not a quiet place.

Yup, Nightmare Before Christmas.. I've watched it once, never really understood what the big deal was.

Apparently Marilyn Manson also does a version..

It's actually not too bad :D

I'm with SS. Christmas is my jam. The day after Thanksgiving man. That's when life has meaning again. The rest of the year? Pssh! Nothing! I'm sad we're having such a short "season" again with Thanksgiving being so late in the month. That's less time to enjoy my trees.

Kob, the nice thing about having Lexi in the house is that she can walk much farther than Dozer can. I try to take her a mile or so every other day to keep us both active. Plus, I swear to you she's part bunny - always hopping about!

ETA: I'm just not super active during the work week. For instance, yesterday I took Lexi for a walk and I still only hit about 6100 steps. That's just sad.

Glory- You have a much smaller, rounder dog. Small legs. I've got a DOG. 80-90 lbs, our morning walk is a mile and a half. (3372 right now)

Make it more of a lifestyle than a bother.

That's what I do. I mean, I check my daily steps because I'm intrigued with the 10k/ day idea, but I haven't weighed myself in 5 months. I just know that I am more active, but it's far harder for me to lose weight than 10 yrs ago.

By the way- Jetpack Joyride is an example of irresponsible jetpacking. Up, down, shooting things at people. That's not what I'm about.

I am not dressed up today, for Halloween. And I'm certainly not putting clothes on my dog.  I imagine Glory is...

Hey! Seems dead here, but hope you're still lurking. We're all fans of TV shows. This new documentary is in some theaters today, and also here on iTunes. I thought I'd plug it because someone I knew in college is a showrunner, and in this movie. I plan on watching over the weekend.

I put a Bavarian hat on and a German-type cardigan and grabbed a walking stick that I've never actually used for walking, so I can answer the door in a costume, albeit a not very interesting one.

As usual, we will be counting the trick-or-treaters. Our low is 26 (just last year) and our high is 67 (in a year when the town decided to hold Halloween on a different night because of a power outage, but some people came on 10/31 anyway, and some people probably came twice). The highest non-doubled year was 58.

My office is pretty conservative, but it goes waaaaaay overboard for Halloween. It's one of the big bosses favorite holidays so every floor picks a theme, keeps it a big secret. People decorate on the day and very little work gets done.

Some of this year's themes were: Transylvanian Open (a horror themed mini-golf tournament)  one floor was Harry Potter themed, HR did an insane asylum, Legal did "Twilight Zone"

One floor did all TV shows, with cubicles done up as House of Cards, Scandal and West Wing (we're DC based).

It was pretty crazy.

Our office had our Halloween party on Tuesday.  Since I just got back to the office on Monday after being gone for two weeks, I didn't know about it until I went through my million emails Monday morning, so didn't have time to pull together a costume (We did a Clue-themed party, with additional games).  Still had fun, though.

Tonight I'm just going to hand out candy to trick or treaters.

I had 80 kids for Trick or Treat. It was fun. I think there were more little kids and fewer older ones this time. I don't think I saw a single princess costume, either, which was surprising.

I was tired and busy so I didn't get as elaborate as usual with decorations or costumes. I hung orange lights on the front stoop, plus a couple of glow in the dark skeletons and a skull on the door. Inside, I had purple lights and a ghoul. I just wore black with some battery operated orange lights around my neck and skull jewelry.

The weirdest thing that happened was some teens came to my door, stood in front of it for a while talking about some people in New Jersey who gave "lame loser candy" they didn't like, but never knocked. I'm pretty sure I have great candy (I get like 10 choices and I've never had anyone seem anything but excited to have the options to choose from). So I don't know why they chose to walk up my steps to have that conversation, if they didn't plan to trick or treat here. But I was kind of glad not to have to look them in the eye because I thought they were very rude.

Other than that, there were mostly a lot of cuties.

Edited by possibilities

Halloween is really big here. Just up the street, the town sponsors a party, and everyone has to go past my house to get there. Trick or Treat hours are from 6 to 8, so actually we had a fair amount of downtime between trick or treaters. I actually get more kids some years, but for some reason traffic was slow tonight. A friend comes over and we sit with the candy and chat between answering the door.

We had 41 - 43 people. One group had 8, but then it seemed a couple more came; it's very confusing when there's that many at once! Mr. Kev set up an alarm on the driveway so we'd know when someone passed it, and it just went off at 1 AM. I expect it's the wind or some wildlife, but it's a little disconcerting.

I wasn't really all that excited or prepared for Halloween this year; I just ran out for the candy last night and my non-nut choice ended up being Smarties, which is kind of awkward because you have to tell them it's okay to take 4 or 5.

Well, 9:30 here, and I had a grand total of 6 trick or treaters.  Last year, I had about 3 dozen, so of course I bought plenty of candy this year (almost ran out last year, since I just bought a couple of small bags), since I figured there would be more kids on what is basically a weekend night.  Now I have a ton of candy left over. The local soup kitchen has requested donations of any leftover Halloween candy, so I'll probably drop it off there this weekend.

I never get a lot of trick-or-treaters but for the second year in a row I was out on Halloween. It makes me feel a bit like a bad neighbor that I'm not there to see the neighbor kids' costumes, but I don't like to pass up other plans when I know not many people come to my house anyway. So I put out a bowl of candy. Most of it was gone when I got home but there was some left. And there were several pieces of candy in the bowl that I didn't put there. So I guess since kid traded some of their other candy for mine?

The weather here was horrid. Freezing rain/snow and gale force winds. I had maybe 30 trick or treaters, and we usually get around 200 minimum. I gave extra to those who came out and I still have way too much left over.

Yup. We had about 15 "groups" of kids. Sometimes it was one kid, sometimes a few. I have SO MUCH CANDY though because I thought the weather would be better and we'd be swarmed.

It rained here in LA. Only for a little bit, and started around 1130pm. But it RAINED. Sure it's 65* and sunny now but it RAINED. I walked the dog and my sneakers are sopping wet and it had nothing to do with the dog running through any sprinklers. WATERY SUBSTANCE FELL FROM THE SKY.

There were some mudslides in some areas (due to fires and the drought). Earthquakes and locusts must be just over the horizon now. We had joy, we had fun, we had seasons in the sun...

ETA: This "halloween" stuff you're all writing about when MY GOD IT RAINED there are signs of the apocalypse upon us.

And there were several pieces of candy in the bowl that I didn't put there. So I guess since kid traded some of their other candy for mine?

That is AWESOME. We never paid attention to the candy we got til we got home and traded. The fact that some kid stopped, deliberated and did the exchange with no prompting is hilarious.

Do like MichelleAK and give it to a food shelter/ Goodwill type of place. Boy, am I glad you can't down-vote posts or this one would get a ton, huh?

I give you this:  Perhaps the second craziest state in the Union (Florida is forever #1) is Arizona.

Arizona does not abide to the Daylight Saving Time rule. It's not like there's a bunch of geniuses evolving from that craziness.

Food question - first time ever today, I attempted black bean soup in the slow cooker. 7 hours in the cooker (and after soaking all night) and them beans are still tough. I'm thinking of throwing it all on the stove and boil it up. Thoughts? Was 7 hours not enough?

I say try it on the stove!  Get it boiling and then turn it down and let it simmer, check on it every 15-30 minutes to see what kind of progress its making.  I'll make black bean soup on occasion, I've learned that I longer soak time will help them to cook faster, but not significantly so, and it always seems to take longer than I expect it to.

Let us know how it turns out!

King of Winged Creatures, were you following a recipe? I don't think I'd attempt bean soup w/o a recipe, and for a crock-pot, a specific crock-pot recipe. I've thought at times about getting a crock-pot, but what stops me is counter space (or lack thereof). And isn't that a bummer when food is so bad you have to throw it out? :/

The best part of that comic was "but...jetpack."

I never have much trouble with the clock change in the fall. It's always a matter of, "Hey, I stayed up too late again! Ooh...but it's an hour less late than usual, so that's good." In the spring it's worse, of course. But I'm always really glad it happens on a Saturday night (Friday would work okay for me, too) because messing around with my clock on a school night would be a bad thing.
